  1. Other than the obvious things, Fuel filter, air filters, plugs... Is there any thing that I should look at for replacement, while I will have the bike down to the frame here in a couple of weeks ( other than more time to spend on it and money, cooler weather ) I only need tips/hints , suggestions for the front from the side covers forward... The rear I have a good grasp on,,, getting rid of it....... Any thing that I really should do before I strip it down. Once I get every thing off for paint it pretty much becomes a door stop for a couple of weeks........
  2. OK, accumulating too much stuff around here. I have two extra motors so I am offering up one almost complete motor off an 86. It is minus the carbs and starter. It is still installed in the frame cradle. So, if anyone would like this motor and is willing to pay shipping, it's yours. When I purchased it a couple years back, according to the fellow down Houston way that sold it to me, it ran when the bike was completely disassembled. It looks awful but it's all there and the covers can be cleaned up and recoated.

    if you build it...

...will she...uhh...come? I finished it up today, 5 months in the making, only had a few welds done professionally, the rest was me hacking away in the school's auto shop during my spare time, what little we civil servants DO have...cutting, drilling, grinding, and finishing up the electrical and painting in my shop at home...right next to the TV and coffee table. I got the idea from this website and eye balled all measurements. http://motorcycletrailer.com/tib/ Some of you may remember in late winter me asking about where the centre of gravity is on the VR...this was the reason...LOL...I enjoyed you guys guessing why I wanted to know such a thing. I changed a couple of features like only having a 2-piece backbone instead of 3 piece like they have. It's designed to be taken apart and all fit into the HHR when we reach our destination. I ended up with a couple of snags like not leaving enough room for where I planned to put the license plate, so will have to solve that, right now the plate is tie wrapped on. It's the biggest transportation related thing I've ever built, and given my pretty boy skills, I'm happy with it. It has received final approval by the Pretty Butt, so after 5 years of being a good boy, begging, pleading, and general a$$ kissing, we are going on a trip down the Blue Ridge together...YAHOO! So here's the multiple choice question for you all... Why ELSE would a guy like me build something like this??? A) because the Browner is really becoming a trailer queen of priceless value worthy of tender care during it's final years. B) because deep down I know that BradT hates being bugged for trailering duties. C) because the Pretty Butt has me ass whupped more than I realize. D) because I need to be ready on a moment's notice to head to the USA to pick up my new Gold Wing...or... E) (insert your opinion here)
  4. Well, unless someone gets off the fence and a settlement is reached on a pending civil law suit, looks like I will be sitting around in court waiting to testify rather than joining you good folks at Potato Creek. While these things usually end up settling on the first day of trial, I still have to block off the complete 3 days just in case. Anyway, I will be sending the sold tickets, plus a couple of hundred ticket blanks to Leadwolf56. So, those of you that have not had a chance to purchase the winning ticket, or would like to purchase a few more, check with Kevin (Leadwolf56) at the park. The tickets will be sent off Friday, so you still have a couple of days to make your donations to me via PayPal if you are so inclined. But after Friday, you will needc to see Kevin at the Park. Checking In

Sorry Girls. Letting some of you down by not being on here helping with the men. Things have been crazy at work. New owners took over March 8. Little General out of Beckley WV bought all 4 stores that our owners had. Been going though alot of changes. We now sell beer. Replaced all shelving. Totally changed the store in the inside. I am currently considered the 1st Asst Manager. They bought the manager up from the BP which they also own to manage both stores. Been seeing if I am going to like it enough to stay. Can say that I am watching Schedules etc. This week I do not like what I am seeing. The first couple weeks was ok. Say some Prayers Please. It is depressing when you sit down and see that you have been cheated out of promotions at least 6 times and you know how much work you have put into it.:bawling:Are the moods that I am feeling. Could use some time with the FAMILY and on the bike.
  6. After a record setting spring for cool weather and rainfall we had a heavy rainfall last night and the rain has nowhere to go because we live on such a wide flat plain. The TransCanada hiway has been closed, forcing people to take a 200 km detour. They are actually evacuating a couple of smaller towns and their hospitals. I would recommend you avoid Southestern Alberta and SouthWestern Saskatchewan for the next couple of days. I will keep you posted when traffic will start flowing normally again. http://www.leaderpost.com/State+emergency+declared+Maple+Creek+after+reports+flood+waters+heading+towards+town/3171973/story.html http://www.cbc.ca/canada/saskatchewan/story/2010/06/18/sk-flooding-1006.html Brian
  7. I don't generally talk up products but I have to say something about the new ME880 Marathons. I've been running the ME880s for a couple years and though I've heard of a couple problems I've never had any. I've been averaging 20k out of the rear and I got 50k out of my first front. I was always pretty pleased with the handling and felt they were great touring tires. Last week I replaced the rear and found out they had changed the tires a little. The shop I use told me the new ME880s changed the way they size them (they were 140/90). Now they use an alphabetical system. I was also told they changed the compound some in an effort to increase both mileage and handling. Over the past week I decided to put that to the test. The max PSI on the old rear was 50psi. The new ones dropped to 40PSI so they're already a little softer in the ride but I have to admit I was surprised at the handling. I've put her through some tight high speed turns where I threw some good sparks and I have never felt so confident on a touring tire. They really felt more like sport tires. Yesterday we had some pretty good rain here and I had a chance to check the wet pavement performance. Same results. Very solid. It will be a couple months before I have any real idea about the mileage but the performance is the best I've ever experienced in a touring tire. If they wear well and the delamination issue has been corrected they have a real winner here.
  8. hey gang... kumho on back, pirelli rear reversed on front. Couple spins around the neighborhood seems fine. Different, but fine. Time will tell!!!
  9. After my 'deer hunting' incident, where the deer's head had wrapped around my forks and put a baseball size dent (about 2" deep) in the right side of the tank, I talked to a couple of body shops and 'paintless' dent repair places. None seemed to want to do the job, so frustrated went on-line and found a couple of ideas. The first item http://www.ehow.com/how_6462615_use-dent-motorcycle-gas-tank.html was using heat and liquid CO2 to pop the dent. Went to Staples and got a 4-pak of dust-off and borrowed the old-lady's hair dryer. After about 3 cans of air the dent had come out at least half way. Then I attacked it with my Dent King kit which I already had. http://www.ehow.com/how_2098332_repair-dent-motorcycle-tank.html Working from the 12 O'clock position and going around a few times (12, 3, 6, etc.) the rest of the dent came out . Saved big $$$'s and got the satisfaction of doing myself .
  10. Just got back from the Ride for Life in Victoria. It was their first ride. Miserable day ,rain, rain and more rain but we still had about 500 bikes out. Had about 1000 for the Ride for Dad. The difference is that all money raised on the Ride for Life goes to the local cancer clinic instead of going to Ottawa to be doled out. FYI the prostate cancer clinic in Victoria is the best in North America with a 95% survival rate as compared to 65% elsewhere. They called for a minute of silence and had a piper play a tune in recognition of "D" day, the allied invasion of Europe. Saw a couple first gens and a couple second gens there. Still had a good ride in the pouring rain. My oldest son was there, my youngest son buys odd ball bikes that are rarely on the road, and a friend who just bought his first bike. I told both of them I did not expect them to hang in as I was the only one who had experienced cancer ( twice now) but they both did. BBQ and band at the end of the ride. I met a couple who were examining my bike. They asked what it was. I told them and they said they had never heard of Yamaha or Venture. Obviously Yamaha has work to do. I think they were new Harley riders. I was surrounded by Hardleys and for the first time I noticed just how much bigger the Venture is than a Harley. It really stood out. Saw a guy trying to catch up to me going over the "hat". He was on a KTM or similar bike. I slowed down. I had been doing about 120 kph. I had to laugh. He had a jacket on but those yellow rain gear work pants with suspenders over the jacket. The pants were flaring out about 8 inches on each side. He was scooping up the rain as he rode. I think next year will be better.
  11. Well GW'ers we've got our own section of the forum. Thanks Don! Now that we can come out of the closet how about posting some pics of your Wings? Here's a couple of mine. It's an '06 Airbag model with 29K mi on the odo.
  12. I need to adjust the slack in my throttle cable and the manual says to loosen the lock nut on the cruise control. I found the throttle cable. Where do they hide the cruise control unit It's an '07 Venture. (I gave up looking after a couple of minutes cause soup was on the table and I haven't got back to it) Thanks, John
  13. Last Friday (5/28) I rode up to Door Cty, WI for family's annual Memorial Day cookout for my wife's B-Day. Just so happend that Curt (fjr rider) and the Venturer's were camping up there in Bailey's Harbor, so I stopped by to say hi. Around 6:30PM the wife called for me to get home for dinner, so bid the group bye and took off. Was running Rte. 57 across peninsula to Sister Bay and decided to avoid traffic, so jumped on Old Stage road. Had just hit 4th gear @ 60MPH when..WHAM, a couple hundred lb. doe hits me from the left. Held the bars straight, listening to the sound of Crunching metal, then the deer fell away and I brought Matilda to a stop. Got my wits about me and walked back about 1/4 mi. to where the first pieces were on the road. Found the doe about 700 ft. from the point of impact, Very dead and too heavy for me to put on the back saddle (damn, wanted to cook that sucker). Back at the bike, loaded the parts in saddle bag and rode 3mi. to the house (don't they say most accidents happen Saturday morning uncovered her and got the tools out. Pried the front fender tip off the tire, cut turn signal wires, and bent left wind-wing support out a bit. A couple of low speed test runs on our road, all seemed fine so headed to Fish Creek to find the group. Stopped at a winery and was showing the damage, when Steve said, "what about your tank?". The head or front hooves had put a softball sized dent at the tank badges. No wonder my right calf was still hurting!! I'm just amazed how well built these bikes are - no fork problems even after wrapping a deer around them. So...anybody got a good used tank .
  14. I have noticed a couple of times the past 2 weeks that my cooling fan will just arbitrarily come on while my bike has been sitting in the garage for a couple days--If I disconnect the battery ground and reconnect everything is fine (the fan shuts off)---Do I have a bad relay or am I missing something??
  15. Our weather over the past couple months has been nothing short of CRAPPY! http://www.theprovince.com/Weather+woes+Grim+news+starved+Lower+Mainland/3105672/story.html I got more riding days in during Feb and early March than I have since. Couple days in April and another day or two in May but for the most part, it's been considerably cooler than normal and almost always cloudy and rainy. Saw the sun for a little bit last evening and again this morning. Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday were almost a constant drizzle. It's really getting depressing! Can you imagine having to wear a winter coat or a warm jacket and a hat for 7 month's straight with maybe 1 or 2 days where it's warm enuf to shed them for a few hours? I think I will feel naked when I can come to work without wearing a jacket! LOL
  16. I just bought a 96 Tour Classic a couple of months ago and noticed the "guts" coming out of one of the 4 into 4 exhaust pipes. I think these are stock pipes. I'm guessing this is the baffle. Long thin cylinder with threads on one end. Tried tapping back in a couple of times but always works its way back out so last time I just pulled it all the way out. Will this have a negative effect on engine performance. Seems to be running fine, but don't want any damage. Has a little more pronounced backfire, popping sound when letting off the throttle, but that sounds pretty cool. Thanks for your help. Bob
  17. I got a PM asking me where the nearest campgrounds are to my house. Many camp here and anybody who wishes to do so is more than welcome. There is also space here for a few travel trailers and we have always had plenty of room so far. There are no hookups though so if you need a place with hookups, here are a couple of suggestions. This one was recommended by another member but I've not been by there yet. http://schaunacrescampground.com/ Also just a few miles down Hwy. 58 from us is Findley State Park. http://www.findleystatepark.org/
  18. Is anybody here going to DC on Memorial Day weekend ? I am going for the first time this year, been wanting to go for years. I've never even seen the wall except for the portable wall that I've had the privilege to escort a couple times.
  19. Every time I list a few things on CL I get spam replies within a few hours inquiring about whether it's still available or what's the condition. If you answer the email...which comes from CL and you're email address is protected... they have your email address and will broadcast it. So I just had an idea. I also have a hotmail address that I hardly ever use, and I copied their email to it and respond. If I get a couple of live responses I just start forwarding them to the other spamer. If enough of us do this we could drive them nutz.... Hey it's tough finding something to do when you're semi-retired and the economy is in the tank..... :rotf:
  20. I am playing with a couple ideas for the 1st Gen. stereo. I am looking for a couple dead cassette players. All I am looking for is an intact casing and top bezel. I don't care about the buttons or the cassette door. JB
  21. Hi Everybody; Just traded my 96 Royal Star for an 01 bagger: Old guy owned 11K mi example...sweet Picking it up tomorrow Couple ??...I've owned most of the touring models: 83 Venture 78-91 GW Voyager Just about everything except an HD and this RSV Couple questions you experts can answer: 1. How topheavy is it? Surely not as bulbous as my 91 Aspencade! (That thing was like trying to mount an elephant and was absolutely scary in a parking lot with rocks...I kept my 85 Aspencade and was glad I did...still have it) 2. I read some threads on here saying there was a difference between the 01-07 models? I thought after 01 they stayed pretty much the same? 3. Were the WW tires original to some of these, or aftermarket... 4. What about the clutch basket recall...was this model affected and should I have dealer fix before taking delivery? We're going to Savannah next month, might as well go in style with the best (if it's anything like my Royal Star...I like Yamaha quality!) Thanks, Guys! Ride Safe!! http://www.timemachinewatch.com/buy/rsv01.jpg
  22. I just spent a couple of hours in the garage doing various things (first time I have been able to do that in a couple of months, boy was it nice); One of which was changing the coolant (and flushing the system, replacing those stupid little rubber plugs). I read over the article in the Tech section and it made changing the coolant a breeze. The coke bottle method worked great except for the front left cylinder which Pheonex had warned it wouldn't work. But an old T-shirt did the trick So, just wanted to say thanks for that great write up. Don: thanks to you for keeping this place up and running. For those of you that haven't done this yet, I think the hardest part was refilling the coolant slow enough so that it didn't come up and out of the filler opening. Me, being impatient, had a few spills. Luckily it was just distilled water that I spilled (I got some practice since I flushed the system twice).
  23. Well the ride is over We had a beautiful day windy but a great day for a ride. There was about 50 bike there we raised $3200.00 for Gracie and her family The donations were great 80 cases of soda, 9 cases of Lance (my employer) chips and a couple of cases of cheese crackers, 600 dogs and buns w/ all the fix'ens, wings, brownies, enough prizes to make a really nice chinese auction and have a nice amount of door prizes I'm posting a couple links to Gaby Vincent Photography on facebook for the pictures http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=16596&id=118020521555956 http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=16595&id=118020521555956 And Here's just a few attached
  24. Hi, Any known endemic issues with the ignition key mechanism on these old gals? I went to ride my red '84 to work this morning but I couldn't get the key to turn in the ignition! I have a Yamaha original key as well as a couple of copies of same, NONE would turn in the ignition this morning. All worked fine as usual in all the other locks on the bike and no precursory events have suggested any issues with the ignition mechanism up to now. The bike has sat for a couple of weeks due to weather and my busy life but was thought to be ready to go till this happened. Perhaps the spirits were telling me that today isn't a day to ride and I am grateful that it happened in my own garage and not out in the wilds somewhere but it is a puzzle. I had to come to work on 4 wheels. What info do we have on this sort of behaviour ? Thanks, Brian H.
  25. This ends in a couple of hours but is a good deal http://www.1saleaday.com/
