  1. I am about to change the oil in my 83 VR, wanted to go to a synthetic but heard some have additives that hinder clutch preformance could someone please advise me which one I need to go with.
  2. Hi folks. I have a 'new to me' 1989 Venture and there is still a lot of snow on the ground here. I just got it home recently, and fired it up as I just couldn't wait. My problem is I noticed the fluid level in the clutch reservoir is not visible. The clutch works, as I drove the bike onto the trailer to get it home. More than likely it is just low, and I should top it off. However, this bike has been sitting since last fall and I am thinking perhaps this fluid has leaked out since then. If I refill the reservoir, where would it be likely to leak out again, bottom near the clutch area? I am kinda ahead of myself looking for problems that may not be there, but everything else on the bike is up to snuff so it makes me wonder. Any and all help greatly appreciated. Thanks.
  3. Can I replace the sight glass window in the clutch / brake reservoirs ? I have one that is rotted out and the others are not far behind. Thanks, Brian H. Uxbridge Ont
  4. New at this, if I do this wrong let me know. I have a 84 Venture Royal( not owned long). I would like to know how much travel the push rod, in the clutch diagram item #19 push rod 1 has? Putting on new plates and just wanted to know.
  5. Friend just bought 08 Venture. Has around 1500 miles on it now and every time he rides his clutch hand turns black. It only takes about 10 miles of back road riding for this to happen. Getting worse the more miles he puts on. Dealer said he would check with rep about replacement. Friend thought this was not right for just a clutch lever. We think maybe the lever was not sealed (?) or coated correctly from factory. Any thoughts or suggestions. Thanks Gil
  6. In Gallup, NM. Headed to Grand Canyon tomorrow, then on to Los Angelos. Clutch started acting low on pressure. It is NOT slipping. But clutch lever is barely activating clutch. Catching just as soon as it leaves the grip. Fluid is full. I emptied the master cylinder and refilled with fresh DOT. Where is Slave and how do I get to it. What tools will I need, as I may have enough, but want to know before I open it up? Can I easily rebuild both cylinders myself if it comes down to it? Doubt I can find a dealer in LA who can do a 1 day turnaround. Any suggestions?
  7. Do you put anything on the new gasket when you put the clutch housing cover back on? I am going to put in the new spring kit today, and will need to know. Thanks
  8. I don't know how everyone else's clutch is, but on my Venture, there has always been a fair bit of lever movement to operate the clutch, I have had to top up the cylinder periodically (though it had never become any worse) since buying it eleven years ago and it has been prone to getting bubbles in the line. A couple of months ago I was greasing the pin and checking it for wear when I noticed that the pin (asymmetrical with a shoulder/seal part way down) could be replaced the other way round, thus giving the piston much more movement. Like this the clutch was much better, but it did weep brake fluid. Not drastically, but a couple of months and 4,000 miles later (we did a long Summer trip) the clutch master cylinder was empty. If it gets no worse I'm tempted to keep it as it is, but I'm looking for a rebuild kit. Has anyone else had any reason to play with these ?
  9. Well I found out tonight why Yamaha put a "soft" clutch in the Venture. My son and I went out on a day trip today and as we were getting close to home we stopped at a traffic light. It was late with no traffic around and we were in separate lanes. He gets froggy and starts revving the engine on the Nomad and hollers over at me "what ya got old man"? Wellll, I have never been one to let and insult pass me by, especially from a mere youngster, (he's 24), so I got the Venture rolling, pulled the clutch in and hit the throttle a couple of times, then hammered on it... BIG MISTAKE!!! :bang head: This was my first real hard hole shot since I did the clutch up-grade and let me tell you... IT WORKS. That clutch grabbed hold, the rear tire went to spinning and smoking, the rear end went sideways, my butt puckered up and I just held on til I was WAYYYYY out in front. Talk about a rush... Don't wanna do it again, but oh, what a feeling. Before when I tried this the clutch would slip, not much, but just enough that it wouldn't let the rear tire break traction. I think I am going to like this set-up much better.

    Clutch Noise?

When I let the clutch out from a complete stop I hear a clunk noise that I can't tell if it's coming from the clutch assembly area or the drive shaft area. I don't hear the noise any other time when I'm riding. The clutch isn't slipping and other than the clunk when I start out everything seems fine. The engine has around 39,000 miles on it. Is this a normal noise or do I need to get to the shop?
  11. Ok folks. '99 w/ 42k mile. 1st clutch replaced at just over 16k with Barnett plates and springs due to slippage. Clutch seems strong (no slipping) but does not disengage when clutch lever is pulled in. Bled clutch fluid today and checked engine oil level (even topped it off) since it is after all a wet clutch. Still wants to pull when lever is pulled in. Short of pulling clutch out to look for warped plates, etc., which I don't think is case. Heard one comment that maybe plates got dry (bile has not been sitting) and best way to free them up is to get up to about 15MPH and lock up rear brake with clutch pulled in. Any help / suggestions would be appreciated. pa_don
  12. hi all i am going to help james (jburell) to rebuild his clutch release cylinder. i have a question about the removal of it. looking at the manual i have to remove the shift rod, the stator cover, left floorboard, left exhaust and middle gear case cover. can't i just pull the middle gear case cover only to be able to access the two bolts to remove the clutch release cylinder? looks like there would be enought room to unbolt it and drop the cylinder down and out the bottom. seames to me that this one cover would be the easiest and fastest way to go. any ideas or suggestions. thanks in advance & best reguards don c.
  13. Bob Meyer and his friend just arrived in SLC safely. Bob ('86 Venture) called and he is having difficulty getting his clutch to release. My initial thought is that because of the elevation change from Kentucky to Utah that the system has additional pressure and that if we open the master cylinder cap that will relieve it and his system will function normally again. Any ideas or suggestions before I go home from work would appreciated. Dave
  14. Hello, I've about had it.... Started out with clutch/ slave master cylinder and a stuck shifter problem... Clutch and shifting problem seem to be pretty much resolved, but in trying to finish up the job I'm having a terrible time with the bleeding. I've reverse bled the clutch about 5 times.Tried it the standard way several times, also left the clutch lever tied down overnight... What happens is I bleed the air out, pump the clutch handle about 3-5 times and by then the pressure is so hard I can only move the lever about 1/2 inch. Rebleed and same thing......over and over and over...:bang head: I've taken the master cyl. apart and put it back together twice...Followed the diagram exactly..same thing...Slave is new and work fine..... Push rod from slave works fine, clutch is good.....I've run a very fine wire throught the pinhole in the master cyl.... What the heck is the problem here??? I need some new answers or suggestions... I'm all out of ideas??? Clay
  15. I am having problems with my clutch and hope someone can give me advice on how to address the problem. The clutch starting functioning poorly on a ride a few days ago. I checked the fluid level and it was low. Added some fluid and the clutch started working well. A fews days later, on another ride, I encounterred the same problem. The fluid reservoir was almost empty. I placed a piece of cardboard under the bike when I parked it and my suspicions were confirmed. There is a fluid leak that is causing me to lose brake fluid. Has anyone encountered this problem before and what are some things I should know in resolving this issue? Rick
  16. The gift that keeps on giving. We left WV on Monday riding the 89 towing our trailer. The first fuel stop was 120 miles down the road. I noticed some clutch problems only half a lever of clutch and not completly disengaging when stopping. By the time we got into Tennessee the heat index was 100 and the fan was running continously as the temp guage stayed just below the red. Getting off at the pigeon forge exit I totally lost the clutch lever ( no pressure as I squeezed it). MamaMo enjoyed coming to a stop at the exit using the kill switch. We managed to get into the visitors center and let the bike cool down for 30 minutes until I got some lever back. We made it to our rental in Sevierville and I called Jeff. I told him I had some discoloration in the clutch site glass. He said he had seen a hose problem do that same thing and he would bring one to Asheville. We could change and flush it there. We rode around Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg the next day shopping and I was good for about 5 mile or 10 stoplights before problems. I picked up some brake fluid and decided to flush it myself. Thats when I noticed my smallest wrench a 8mm was to big for the bleeder. I called jeff who was now at Asheville and he offered to ride the 90 miles bring the hose and fix it. He made it by 8:45 pm we change hose and flushed the system. Jeff rode back to Asheville that night. The next morning we pulled MamaMo and the trailer up over the smokeys 6000 ft elevation and down to Cherokee,Maggie Valley, and on in to Asheville. The clutch worked like new. At the campground Jeff was non stop tweaking and fixing first gens. I noticed some second genners waiting for a touch from the venture doctor. Many thanks to a guy that keeps on giving.
  17. I have noticed slippage from what i think is the clutch when i shift from 1st to 2nd under hard acceleration (full throttle). If i back off the throttle it is ok, seems like it grabs then it is good to go. This also will happen going from 2nd to 3rd but only under the same conditions. I usually ride conservatively but sometimes I like to hit it once in awhile for a little stress relief. My bike has 30,000 miles on it and it is an 86 model. Time for a new clutch? If that is needed then I take it that it will need new springs and a pressure plate also. How tough will it be to get to the slave cyl that seems to be buried in the block, since i will rebuild this also?
  18. was taking off my clutch master cylinder loose this morning and busted the clutch switch off where it attaches at cylinder if anyone has an extra off a damaged or parts bike let me know how much will pay to have it shipped to me. Thanks, David
  19. '87 I know it all depends on riding habits but I have 58K miles on the bike with original clutch. Do you all have more miles with original clutch, I'm very easy on it. to give you an idea, I have two cars with 300K miles on their original clutches. I was bogging a bit in 5th gear and accelerated and I thought I heard the engine rev a bit. I didn't reinact it to see what would happen so I'm not sure if I sensed something that wasn't there.
  20. Has anyone replaced their clutch housing ("I" basket)? If so, what did you use to hold the housing whilst loosening the nut??? Mine's an '05, and while it's covered by warranty, the local guy shows no interest in doing the work. I don't want anyone touching my bike who has no interest in it. I'd rather buy the housing and do it myself.
  21. Has anyone experienced a knocking sound that seems to be coming from the water pump? I can't imagine what could be causing the knocking noise that seems to be more noticeable at idle and slightly above idle. Doesn't seem to be the clutch cause the knocking doesn't change with the clutch engaged or not. The clutch does make some noise when not engaged. The knocking sounds it definately coming from the water pump. The bike is an 88 VR and does not overheat even on the hotest Texas days. Any advise from anyone would be most welcome. Thanks Masterguns
  22. HI, NEED TO ORDER A CLUTCH mc REBUILD KIT AND SLAVE CYLINDER REBUILD TO FIX UP 83VR CLUTCH THAT DIED ON MY WAY BACK FROM MY 5000 MILE TRIP OUT WEST. ANY IDEAS / ADVICE ON A PLACE TO ORDER THESE ITEMS FROM? CLAY
  23. Help. Never have had a problem like this on old 83. Just took it 5000 miles west to Glacier, Waterton, Yellowstone, the tetons and the bighorns...300 miles from home the clutch seemed to lose pressure.. the only way to get it to shift was to pump the clutch up.. no fluid was seemingly lost.....Stopped and bled the clutch , but to no avail... the pressure stayed up , but it got to the point where it would no longer shift. Fortunately it stopped working just a few miles from my moms' house on my last day.... However... it will no longer shift into any gear while running.. I can get it into nuetral while it is not running, but the second I try to put it in any gear, it slams to a stop and kills the motor or makes an ungodly sound like someone throwing a bad of wrenches.. Hopefully the tranny did not go.. I love my original 83 (40,000 miles )and would hate to see it die. Never dealt with any clutch issues before so have no idea.. Any thoughts, clues or things to look at????? Hard to repair???? I have to take my trailer and ride back 300 miles to pick up the bike next week...Want to do more serious riding this summer so any advice or help would be greatly appreciated... Met another Venture rider ( Dave 007) at a gas station in Chamberlain,SD on my way back. 5000 miles 0f a great trip. the Road to the Sun and The Beartooth were great rides....Hopefully old 83 is up for more...
  24. Thanks to everyone's encouragement in a recent post I made in the "watering hole" forum I picked up the '89 venture from my dad over the weekend. With the bike on the center stand, in gear with the clutch lever engaged I am not able to spin the rear wheel. Looking at the fluid in the master cylinder, the fluid is very dark. I'll start by replacing the fluid and bleeding the clutch. If that does not fix it what are my next steps? Thanks in advance. ~Eric
  25. OK, now here's the deal. When I was growing up, dad had bought us kids the traditional little Japanese bikes for puttering around on at the local dirt bike riding area. Once we would get the bike under way, we never used the clutch for shifting because they shifted so easily without it just by letting off the gas and hitting the shift lever. That was when I was young and stoopid. Now I'm old, cranky and battle scarred (married:Avatars_Gee_George:). As the owner of a recently purchased Venture, I've got a question concerning proper clutch use. It's been a long time since I had a bike and I caught myself using the clutch for all shifting (force of habit caused by all that truck driving). This got me wondering. I've never had a bike with a hydraulic clutch and I've certainly never had a Venture before. Is it in the bike's best interest to use the clutch for all shifting or do I need to revert the ways of my youth and use the clutch only for starting, stopping and downshifting? Thanks y'all!
