1. I'm looking to put running lights on and i needto know if there is power points other than the fuse box. I realy don't like going to the battery. any help would be thankful ron:cool10:
2. I bought a set of these large pliers from Harbor Freight. I can not believe how many times they have come in handy in such a short time. Today I was trying to tighten a hose clamp that the screw was in a position that I couldn't get a small open end or screw driver to it. The long needle nose work well in loosening the clamp so I could spin it and re-tighten it. They also work really well on the oil breather line under the air box on a 1st Gen. I recommend a set of these for every tool box.
3. I was coming out of Aberdeen SD today at about 1:30 p.m. and I met a black Venture pulling a trailer headed west on U.S. Hwy 12. There isnt many ventures around here, and I thought I knew most all of them. Just wondering if it was anybody from this site. The trailer was a car top box mounted to trailer, and it looked pretty nice. I gave a good wave from my pickup truck but I doubt they saw me (split lane road).
4. So, I get to work today and the boss say's the assistant principal called and said we have a spider in the 200's hallway. Oh yeah, I work facilities maintenance at a girls Catholic High School. The boss and my co-worker Joe go to investigate, they round the corner and there's several girls screaming and pointing , as they get nearer the girls say it's next to the pew! Joe see's the TARANTULA ! screams like a girl and runs the other way so my boss gets a box and a broom and scoops it up. I get to work at 4pm and the boss pulls the box with the spider out expecting me to back off, but I got him, I opened the box picked up the death bug thrusting it towards him as he fell over his chair trying to get away :rotfl: is what I did I had several tarantula's as pet's years ago, they don't bother me So how was your day at work?
5. I have a 2007 venture.I have been wanting to upgrade the handlebars on my bike for sometime and came across a great deal from a member here and bought a set of Tour Deluxe bars to replace my stock ones. This past Saturday, I proceeded to swap everything out. This is when the nightmare began. When changing out the throttle cables, I opened up the junction box where all the cables come together, and the spring that is in there popped out and went in on top of the front of the engine and fell down like a plinko chip.I have removed the lower farings to get better access as well as remove the engine braces to be able to see better and still cannot find this spring.Tried a magnet on a telescoping pole and put it anywhere i could hoping the spring could be located. No luck.Tried using air compressor and blowing up in and around engine to maybe dislodge and fall out.No luck.I went online to order new one. I found part# and ordered one.$5.50 for spring and $9.95 to ship.I received e-mail today that says this spring is on back order until July 25 2012 or later. I called other Yamaha retailers and was told the same thing. One checked and said there was not one in any warehouse or dealership in the States or in Japan.I asked how that was possible, they still make this motorcycle. He said he did not know.He did say the junction box is exclusive to the Venture and Tour Deluxe and the 1st Generation Venture.Does any one have one thy can part with new or old, does not matter?I am desperate
6. /Users/talonsx2/Pictures/iPhoto Library/Masters/2012/05/22/20120522-205256/IMG_1654.JPG ARGH So I wanted to post a pic but I don't think that worked...Anywho I have put the bike completely back together (2nd gear) and even synched the carbs. The day I synced the carbs it ran great (2 weeks ago). Took it out today and it isn't the same as before...It just isn't running right today? (cant assume full power?) I will try a re-synch tomorrow but I have a question for you. There is a tube that connects to the bottom of the air box and goes down to the breather but this tube connects to a T joint before it hits the breather, and another hose comes out and connects to something? Does anyone know what that something is? (FYI, its not the coolant hose coming out of the breather). Thanks in advance for deciphering this more than confusing post.. Keep the rubber on the road.
7. Sorry I forgot to add on my last post about the gear boxes on the Ventures. Reading through the old threads, I can see some people report gear box whines. Do they have a fault with this, do the gear boxes or 4th gear break up? Also can you advise what gear box & engine oil is the best to use. Many, many thanks if you can help.
8. Ever have a starter just get really weak? Like too weak to turn the engine over? Working on my 83 which I personnally have never heard run. Acts like a really weak battery but I charge the battery AND add a fully charged jump box on it and still, the solenoid clicks but the starter does nothing. Occasionally it will drag the motor over really really slow about half a turn then stop. I upgraded to 4 gauge cables when I put it back together after the trans upgrade. I pulled the starter off and laying in the floor it spins great. No indications of an issue at all. Back on the bike and stick the jump box directly on the starter and it still does the same thing. Oh and I did the internal ground mod while I had the starter off, still no difference. The motor turns free by hand, no issue. The starter reduction gears are in there correct and not binding. It just acts like the starter don't have enough power to do the job. I've narrowed down everything I know to do and it seems to me like it's simply a weak starter. I know the newer 4 brush starters are the way to go, but I thought I'd run this by the guru's and see if I may be missing something.
9. Hello everyone! Our bike did not pass the safety test because of an exhaust leak... I took it apart, it was leaking BIG at the rear cylinders which I fixed with new seals and a good cleanup. Then it was leaking at the 6 joints around the collector box... I tried the copper sleeves recommended on VR.org but couldn't get it to fit right so I went to our local Yammy dealer and bought the six OEM seals. It all fit so well together, but still leaks at the two joints at the front and the two heading out to the tail pipes. GRRRRRRRR I can't plate it and ride it if it ain't passed safety. How can I seal these joints if a new seal isn't doing it? I've wire brushed the whole collector box and it looks real good. No leaks, no cracks, no black marks, I even painted it silver with high-heat paint so I could see if and where it's leaking... the box is not leaking. But the joints, with new seals is still leaking. HELP, please, please, please.
10. Okay, I was working on the new 86 and notice the horns not working. Okay simple answer is that the fuse is blown. I open the fuse box but no horn fuse there. I find an auxiliary fuse box with 5 and 10 blade fuses but no horn fuse there either. One of the 10 amp fuses was blown so thats taken care of but................ So i still am not sure where to find it. the schematic shows there is one, I've been on the different tech sections i just can't find any info on this location. i hope its not just out obvious someplace that I'm missing. Does anyone know where it is?????
11. Since I don't use my audio equipment, this afternoon I got busy yanking some of my 93 apart (multiple things are going on at once). I've got the amp equipment removed. No problems there. This is what I'm thinking of doing. The mute switch on the handlebar audio controls (what IS that box called, anyway?) is a 2-position simple on/off switch. When I convert my headlight to HID, that switch would function nicely as my on/off control for the headlight, eh? So I traced the wire routing and got that whole box and connector removed from the bike and now it sits on the bench. Buuuttt.... there doesn't seem to be an easy way of disassembling the thing further than where I've got it now (see photo), and I have no idea which wires go to which switching devices in there. I looked for other threads concerning this, but I can't seem to find anything quite this detailed. I don't suppose any of our long term members have been down this road before and perhaps somebody has a pinout of this whole switch control? Dingy? Dingy? DDDIIINNNGGGYYY???????
12. So I had a leaky stock shock on my '09 RSTD. I did some research and opted for the YSS from EPM Performance. One surprise about the shock is that it is made in Thailand. I don't think that matters much in todays day and age. The machine tooling in Asian countries is as good if not better than in the US. China still has issues with specifications and stuff. Taiwan is a powerhouse in machine tooling that started with their bicycle industry. Not sure of Thailand but this shock is a very well made aluminum piece. Very pretty bike porn. I filled out the information from the website and got an e-mail from Klaus Huenecke the next morning. I called them and placed my order Jan. 16. I was quoted 2-3 weeks for the shock, but I ended up getting it in March. This was not that big of a deal as I have been swamped with other projects in the first couple of months of the year. Here is the photo that Klaus sent me of the shock when I ordered: http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7205/6887486880_efa82f3026_b.jpg Here is the shock as received by me: http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7251/7033581199_0300d3a992_b.jpg If I am not riding, the next best thing is working on the bike in the garage on a nice day. My house faces north so I think it is the perfect place to work: http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7241/7033597743_3514120497_b.jpg I did not want to take the rear wheel off so I figured I would go thru the battery box and change the BikeMaster TruGel with a Deka. I took the battery box out as well as the passenger floor boards on each side and the side covers. I realize now I did not get a good shot of that. That shock sure is tucked down in there pretty good: http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7192/6887488318_a1f4ecb868_b.jpg http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7265/7033586793_c1469fd67a_b.jpg When I first started motorcycling I purchased this bike jack from Kawasaki. Very handy when you want fine control lifting the bike up. You still have to lie on the floor, but it is perfect for unloading the shock: http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7280/7033587875_ab1f8dec3d_b.jpg Some other people have written that you don't have to take off both floorboards to do this, but I am glad I did because you can really get in there and work and see what you are doing. Another set of hands would have been good to hold the back side nut when loosening the bolt on the shock and the dog bone, but it was nothing strategic use of a 2X4 and a box end wrench could not handle. Since I was laying the ground the hardest part was getting the vent hose released, I was on the left side and should of got up to undo it on the right side: http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7070/6887495050_98ac4cb53c_b.jpg Here is the new versus the old. Very nice piece of kit is the new one: http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7103/7033589763_a8f55435e4_b.jpg The YSS came with 2 washers that there are no instructions as to where they go. There was some play in the bottom clevis so I put them on the inside of it. Unfortunately the Billet clevis is wider than the stamped steel original and the bolt does not quite get full engagement. http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7041/6887506104_c6f16530ed_b.jpg bad pic that does not quite show the lack of full engagement of the nut. I'll keep an eye on it and maybe talk to the bolt supply guy at work and get a longer one if it seems to be a problem. When I bought the longer dog bones for the rear, they came with new bolts. For $499.00 I wish it would have been all inclusive of all the parts you need. Also the instructions it comes with are generic and not specific to the bike. http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7255/7033603105_a7dab270ef_b.jpg Here is a pic that shows accessing the nut on the top bolt. The bolt head has a capture device so you only need one socket to remove it: http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7089/7033598581_363648a59e_b.jpg Here is another pic that shows the lack of full engagement on the bottom bolt. Unfortunately there is a dearth of places to get large metric bolts like this. I'll have to measure it and get a longer one from Bolt Depot perhaps. http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7084/6887508424_c64620c0ba_b.jpg by sadicarnot, on Flickr
13. What is the thing with all the blue blade connections just below the fuse box? And while we are at it, what is just to the right of the fuse box? http://db.tt/mzfG4Eyb
14. I went to Fin, Fur and feather yesterday to get a couple new rods and reels to replace our older rods we use for crappie fishing. I guess I should have looked at the prices - 3 reels, 2 rods and tax = $298.00 OUCH ! I had a little cash left so I went upstairs to look at the Kimbers knowing they wouldn't have anything that would fit like my Glock. First I looked at and held the Solo, I know it's not fair but it reminded me of the KelTec I have. Then I asked what other options were available in 9MM. The clerk brought out an Ultra CDP 11, that's when it happened - I was totally smitten I started breathing heavy, broke out in a light sweat and when I could talk again I asked if he had one in a box. No was his response and he just stood there - After a short (very short) awkward moment, I told him to put it in a box before somebody else saw it. :mo money: In line at the cash register a guy looked at me and said - your first Kimber ? I replied yes and he his offered congratulations saying "you'll like it " Bottom line - Don't go to a well stocked sporting goods store without your wife !
15. I am the proud and humbled owner of a brand new F4Customs windshield. This is the largest shield available for the Venture that F4 makes at this time and it does have the integrated vent. Model # F4-YRSV-19_5-W-VENT-C 19.5" Clear Wide After talking with Don, he suggested that I start a thread here so I can add too it as I need to while giving a review of the shield. Once the review is done, we will make it a report and move it to the library. My intentions are to bring both the good and the bad. In doing this, I am basically going to review this in the form of a Diary listing just about every ride, the things noticed about the shield, cleaning, wear, gas mileage changes and any thing else that may pop up related to the windshield. Should you have any questions post them and I will answer to the best of my ability. So, to get started: I received the windshield nicely packed in a box and protected what I consider well enough to protect it under most shipping circumstances. Mine did come in with the box a little crushed. I was a little concerned until I was able to unpack it. As you can see the box was a little crushed Shield out of box and out of packing material Unwrapped face down - unwrapped face up Notice that the shield also had a protective coating of plastic stuck to it. Below are a few measurements. Now for a few comparison pics. I have my OEM in front of the F4. The black is on my original OEM, NOT the F4 and the F4 still has the sticky protective plastic on it. This should be enough to hold you for a few moments at least... I did take my first ride with it this past Tuesday. I will post some more shortly.
16. I've found this forum to be extremely helpful...payment was made last weekend and I'm now a supporting member. Slowly but surely, I'm knocking out the to do list on the 83 Venture. Unfortunately, new things are getting added to the list too. It's also a little inconvenient for me to work on the bike during the week. My garage is chock full, so the bike is at a friend's house. All the pictures here have been resized small for quick loading even on dial up or smartphone users. As of now, including purchase price, I've got about $450.00 invested in the bike. The newest thing that got added to the list is another oil leak. grrrr. Attached is a pic of where it's coming from. It's leaking at the plug just behind the sight glass for the oil level. I've snugged it up a little and the leak has slowed down. According to the microfiche, it's part # 4H7-15189-00-00 (15 on the diagram). What the diagram doesn't show is if there is anything under the plug. If I pull this plug to replace the o-ring, am I going to have parts come flying out at me or am I going to have to re-align something, or am I simply over thinking the issue. http://www.3cyl.com/jeff/venture/oil%20leak3.jpg Next on the original list was electrical. The fuse box was shot, so I replaced it. I just need to get a buss bar for the accessory circuit. Currently I just jumpered the only wire attached to the buss to the accessory fuse (green wire on new fuse box) I need to cut a piece of aluminum to the size of the original fuse box, drill it for the hold down screw and then attach the new fuse box and buss bar to it in order to securely mount it in the stock location. http://www.3cyl.com/jeff/venture/fuse%20before2.jpg http://www.3cyl.com/jeff/venture/fuse%20after2.jpg On the original list was brakes. They were shot and the rear master cylinder was frozen. Got the rear master cylinder cleaned out and working, fortunately without the $70.00 rebuild kit, and now I just need to get the system filled and bled...ran out of brake fluid last Sunday when I was working on the bike and the auto parts store was closed by the time I found out that I needed more brake fluid. Also on the original list, but something that I didn't think was overly important is the computerized monitor. I know that it's somewhat important because of the oil pressure and other indicators, but since everything appeared to be functional, I didn't have it high on the priority list...until I noticed that the headlight wasn't working all the time. I thought it was a dirty dimmer switch or a loose connection. Reading on here that the headlight runs through this monitor, this has moved up on the priority list. I'll pull it apart and resolder everything. Hopefully that will get it working correctly. If not, the bike is getting a mechanical oil pressure gauge and the headlight will be straight wired through a relay. I know the idle speed is low. The bike has developed a miss in the front left cylinder at idle, but it clears up once the RPMs hit about 1500. I have new spark plugs and wires for it now...just have to put them in. http://www.3cyl.com/jeff/venture/dash%20error2.jpg My friend George, whose garage the bike is in, will be doing the bodywork soon and I'll do the painting. I just have to decide on the color. It's currently Harley Davidson Orange. I hate orange. I'm leaning towards a medium/light blue or grey. http://www.3cyl.com/jeff/venture/body%20parts2.jpg It looks pretty rough without it's clothes on http://www.3cyl.com/jeff/venture/naked%20venture2.jpg I want to get this bike done and rideable by the end of March. I have 2 other projects that I want to get done before summer... My 73 Suzuki GT550 needs a top end and a repaint.... http://www.3cyl.com/jeff/venture/gt5502.jpg And George's son has a 72 Kawasaki S2 that I need to go through and get running... http://www.3cyl.com/jeff/venture/s22.jpg
17. I am thinking about buying this rack made by Wompus Racks, I saw one similar to it here but I believe that person fabed their own. Its going on my V Star 1300 and I will be mounting a box on it.
18. I needed a new battery so I priced them everywhere, the only place that could beat them was a Scooter Shop here in Newnan. He does sell motorcycles, but thats another story. I went in to pick up my new battery and starting looking around his shop and saw a rear box on an upper shelf. It looked exactly like what I wanted for my V Star, it sorta matches the lines of my bags and the bike, so I looked at it, it is of fair size made, of abs as are most body parts these days, has a radio antenna built into it, not that I will use it, locking lid. He saw I was interested so he said make him an offer on it, he had two in stock and they had been there for a couple of years, they were rather dusty. He then said they normally retailed for $80.00, If he would have told me that before I looked at it, I wouldnt have looked because at that price it had to be junk, so I offered him $35.00, he countered $40.00. So I now have a new rear box to mount, but nothing to mount it too, I need to get a luggage rack to mount it too, or have one made up. Wish me luck.
19. I am looking for ideas, suggestions or any help in designing my trailer, with conversion wheels kit as base to start with. I picked up this conversion kit while purchasing my 91 VR, with matching colors and mags it looks good. Short cargo box for cars could be a solution, but some are to skimpy for long haul vibrations, is there box manufacturers for my applications. Thanks Mike:lightbulb:
20. Well I finally did it. I took out the cassette deck & gutted the box of the inards. Then cut out some sheet metal to cover the bottom and added a backstop that goes back about 3". Did that since you can only get your hand in just so far and wanted to be able to reach whatever ends up all the way in. Also covered the inside with some nice black vinyl material I had on hand. I thought of saving that cassette assembly & build a box but who would want one. It was just easier altering the exiting box and not having to fabricate something for the door. For sure now I'll get some use of that part of the bike. Larry
21. Looking for one of these, the box, bracket and the bolt. I'd like to make a sw box out of it. If you have one let me know what you would want for it.
22. The thread on burning coal got me to thinking. By now you should all know that is dangerous. My house was built in 1886, it is a small 2 story with a 12 12 pitch roof so there is a good size attic. It is getting real close to time to replace the roof. Right now the only thing still using the chimney is the gas hot water heater in the basement. That water heater is around 25 years old so I am thinking of replacing it with a direct vent type so that nothing is using the chimney. I would like to then take down the chimney so that the new roof can cover the old chimney hole in the peak of the roof. My question is; In these old houses did they use the chimney as a structural member? Or can I just take it down and only have to do some wall and floor patching. It sure would be nice to get that space back in the kitchen and the hall where you have to turn sideways to squeeze past the chimney and it is impossible to get a box spring or anything else with a dimension of more than 20 inches into the bedroom at the end of the hall. That eliminates most dressers and beds. with the chimney gone it will be a 40 inch wide hall and room to swing the corner with even a king size box spring. Anyone ever do a chimneyectomy on an old house?
23. I took the Brown fox for an Autumn ride today Ii got about 12 miles from home when I notice a cloud following me. I pull off the road and the fox is smoking like crazy. i shut her off and climb off to see oil dripping out of the(I think) tranny case rather quickly. Its running down onto the collector box and onto the ground. I shut the engine off and the oil stream slows an stops. I start the engine and it starts to flow again. I call a tow truck and take it home. The questions i have: 1.) is there a drain plug on the bottom of the tranmission and could it have worked loose. If not, outside of a possible cracked engine case what else could have caused this leak. To actually be able to see the underside of the engine i'll have to pull the collector box. before i do i need to know if its worth it and what i might find under there. Special note: For the last few weeks the engine started making an internal rattling noise while idling on the side stand.. If its not fixable then I'll either start piecing it out or sell it outright for parts. but before i do that I hope to know if its salvage able. Please help guys and gals.
24. My sargent just returned from a trip in southern Ohio....Guess what he brought back for me.......a five lb. box of.......................................................wait for it..................................."RIBET"
25. i was thinking about a magnetic tank bag. i was going to mount three plates of metal to the underside of my false tank cover. but then, got to thinking, i remounted the tci to the air box. will the magnets mess with it? any thoughts? has anyone tried this?
