  1. Cruise Pump I have a car cruise on my VTX and I'm looking for a vacuum pump. Is the Yamaha cruise pump an actual pump. In other words can I hot wire it and use it as a pump? I bought a Gold Wing thingy I thought was a pump and it was just a vacuum check valve. Thanks for any help. Jeff
  2. I found a cardboard box full of ammo laying in the back of the closet that I don't even remember buying, it had been so long ago. While poking thru all the different calibers I ran across this Mobile Oil gas receipt dated 11/6/65 where the customer bought 11.4 gallons of fuel for the grand total of $3.40. Works out to around .29/gal. We've come a long way baby!!!
  3. ok time for oil change whats the best stuff everyone uses? dont know whats in it now as i just bought it cpl months ago.
  4. Rode to Houston from Corpus Christi on Satuday to pick up some parts for another bike in the stable. Starter crapped out again, a welcomed push start from a group of amassed Patriot Guard Riders in a Walmart parking lot got me on the road again (Hey, works great if you let the bike sit for an hour, this is # 3 starter by the way). Another cracked armature, I'm sure. I couldn't shut the bike off while fueling, and later while being ticketed for 4 MPH over the posted limit in Port Lavaca (Labor Day weekend, no mercy ya' know). The officer was livid about that, but finally gave in when I asked if he would help me push start the bike. OK, Iv'e reaped cheap long enough, drove to San Antonio today and bought a GL1800. One well used 87 venture for sale, about 3K in it over the last three years, Ignatech igniter (bought it two years ago when it was the hot topic and mine had failed, God bless them Croations), new metering needles and seats, choke plungers, diaphrams, starter rollers, E-3's, updated brakes, Progressive springs, Franks forks, and that wonderful fork brace, along with all the stuff that was supposed to make this thing charming. BYE BYE. Great site we have here, a wealth of information as I have found, by the same token, you can chrome plate a dog turd, but you still have a dog turd all the same, it's just real shiny. Not bitter, just done with supporting a black hole. If I had one positive thing to say about this old beast, it would be that through it all, it smoked every Harley (and one Boss Mustang) that ever tried to pull the trigger on it. It did have that one redeeming value. God Bless, I will keep my membership intact, just that I will be reading the Wing Forum from here on out..
  5. Is it normal for the chrome to go south on these tips? When I was in the bike buying process I looked at two different bikes with less than 10k on them, one had bought spares already to replace the ones on his bike and the second bike had flaky chrome tips. I bought a bike with 20k and the tips looked great until I went to turn the tips the other day and realized the bottom side had flaky chrome. So as I asked is this normal or is there some way to protect them. I was thinking of taking them off and sanding the chrome off and painting them with heat resistant crinkle black paint. I have also found new on ebay for $69. Talk to me boys and girls.
  6. RSTD Looking to buy one, that is a Yamaha Royal Star Tour Deluxe. I drove two over the weekend. The first was an 06 at a dealer with 30k. it had corrosion on it I think it has been ridden up north in the salt. When I drove it I found things like cruise and self canceling turn signals that didn't work. Although it ran OK when I returned with it the dealer asked what I thought about it and I replied "Road hard and put away wet". The second one was a black 06 bought new in 07 with 9k miles on it, WOW what a gorgeous bike I was ready to just put it in the trailer. But, we test rode it as you should and was disappointed with the obnoxious WINE and the slow speed steering was scary, it felt like the front tire was flat. The bike was difficult to turn then would turn like it was going to flop, so you had to push it hard then hold on as to not over steer. Now very frustrated we had to walk away from this bike as well. On our drive of 2-1/2 hours back home I realized I had hot feet ridding both bikes. I currently ride a VTX 1800 C with forward controls and my feet never get hot. Is the hot feet normal on this bike with the floorboards and the chin fairings? I ride in southern FL and most of the time it is 85 degrees plus so I'm wondering if anyone has installed vents in the faring or even cut holes in them to duct air back around the floorboards? Also any suggestions of what was wrong with the steering on that bike? We bought an 07 RSTD w/15 months of remaining warranty. I have added the wind wing air deflectors and hwy pegs which these photos do not show, the rest of the mods were on the bike at time of purchase. I also have bought a Shark stereo and have to get it installed this next week. BTW the deflectors fixed the hot feet issue along with the highway pegs.
  7. Anyone have some experience with this bike? Local Yamaha mechanic bought one and is wild about it. Whats it like? Iowa Guy
  8. Hi All, I bought my '90 VR a couple of weeks ago. The guy I bought it from only had it for a couple of months and said he was out for a ride when it blew a radiator hose. He thought it needed a new head gasket. Anyhow I bought it not going. (I like making things work). I have tested the compression and got 90,100,110 and 165 psi. Added a bit of oil and all four went to 240psi (pretty high isn't it??) I pulled the motor out and have got the heads off. A fair bit of carbon build up on the pistons, top of cylinders and heads. I noticed that the line to the coolant drain was full of sediment and so was the water jacket around Number 1 cylinder. I guess it has been a long time since anyone has given the old girl a good flush out. I've ordered new rings, gaskets and hoses plus anything else needed and now waiting for them to arrive in Australia. I have had a good look around this site and I'm trying to figure out how the oil got into the coolant system. I suspect that the oil seal near the water pump shaft may have let the oil into the waterpump area. there was no water in the oil sump. I've ordered a new seal and mechanical waterpump seal. The bike is faded blue so I hope it'll go fast when I get her back together. It's got 46K on the clock and was imported to Australia from Canada about 6 years ago. Is there any other areas I should check before I start the rebuild??
  9. I guess I’ll begin by introducing myself. I’m Lee Winders and live in the small town of Mansfield, Tn. A few months ago I purchased an ’83 VR. The motorcycle had been setting up for quite some time. The man I bought it from hadn’t ridden it very much. He bought it from someone that I think had let it set up as well. The man I bought it from said the last time he rode it, it quit and he was unable to get it to run again. He said it acted like it was not getting gas. He had shown me the bike about a year ago and I told him if he ever wanted to get rid of it to let me know. He called me a few months ago and asked if I would give $200.00 for it. Well I figured it would be worth it if only for parts. I got it home and the first thing I did was remove the carbs. They were a mess to say the least. I went through and cleaned them as well as I could. I removed the gas tank and drained it. I replaced the fuel lines and filter on the tank side of the fuel pump. I still have the original fuel line on the pressure side. By the way, the bike has 19,000 miles on it. I put fresh gas in it and tried to start it. After about 10 minutes of messing with it, it finally hit. It will only run when fully choked. And then it runs very rough. I’m sure the carbs are way out of adjustment. I also notice the when trying to crank it, one of the carbs didn’t have any suction at all. Possibly a stuck valve. I don’t have the air box on it at this time and I’m sure this would also affect the way it runs. There is a lot of other work that needs to be done on the bike but first I want to know that the engine is ok. I really don’t think there is anything seriously wrong with the bike. It’s going to be a work in progress. I welcome all the help I can get
  10. hello i just got a call from my friend dianne up in north dakota. she said last night she filled up her gas tank then put it in the garage to get ready for a ride today. well she went inside to start up the bike and saw the tank looked like someone caved it in.? she is upset as i would be too she hopes this would be coverd under her warrenty? she bought the bike last year vstar model. i tould her to call the place down here where she bought it then go to a local dealer up there im sure they will replace the tank. the poor woman is in tears. she said she cant even find one on ebay in good condition and close to her silver/black color.
  11. I bought the habor freight 78inch tag along trailer, those that have one ever went from 8 inch to 12 inch tires? Do the 8 inch work well enough?
  12. Hi there i live in the UK . Just Bought a 2001 Venture with 19000miles on the clock and love it. But just got a few questions. Hope someone can help. Firstly the whine which i know alot of these bikes have? Is there an oil of choice or additive that helps ? The whine isnt terrible but its a shame to wear a full face helmet on one of these . Secondly sometimes when starting just on the anitial press of the button, theres a knock just as it ingages ? is this anything to worry about . Thirdly The audio all lights up searchs for radio stations etc . all seems to work apart from theres no sound , ive removed the fairing and checked connections doesnt make any difference . Any ideas ? Many Thanks in advance Edge.
  13. Okay ... I cracked. Having used a home made manometer for some time, generally with a decent amount os success, I cracked and bought a Motion Pro Sync Tool. It wasn't my first choice, but it was available and reasonably priced. I wanted a Morgans Carbtune, but I didn't want the wait. Set up of the tool was a breeze with clear instructions, and calibrating it was equally easy. I went to this trouble because I have had some difficulty getting the bike to idle correctly after a fast run. On the driveway it is fine, but when it's very hot the revs do not want to fall below 3000rpm, 2500 after I tweaked the Idle Mixture a little. There are no vacuum leaks and the carbs are clean. Even with my manometer I was suspicious that the carbs were out of sync. It only takes one of the four to cause a high idle. So ... Tool calibrated, engine hot and tubes fitted to inlet tracts ... Whoah! One carb had vacuum so high it was almost sucking the fluid out of the top of the clear tube. A quick adjusment brought that into line. The right bank only needed a slight tweak and the two banks together weren't too bad, but got the tweak they needed. After a final adjustment of the idle speed, all seemed much smoother. I will run it later and see if the problem has gone, or at least improved, but I have to say that the whole process took less than 10 minutes once the motor was warm, and I would happily recommend the Motion Pro tool. It does seem to work decently well.
  14. Can anyone tell me which wire is the hot that goes to the brake light? I can't find a good wireing diagram. I recently bought a flasher for the brake light. Thanks.
  15. I bought a 2011 RSV over a month ago and have not recieved my Star Branded ipod touch. Has anyone else that bought a 2011 RSV received theirs? If I don't receive any responses from this forum I will call Yamaha in California to see what the hold up is. I now have over 1000 miles on the RSV and can't ride it enough. It is such a joy to ride after riding an FJR and a Concours 14 the last 4 years. The palms of my hands are no longer sore from having to ride with my weight on my palms. The RSV is such a comfortable bike to ride! I should have bought the 1999 model that I first fell in love with so many years ago.
  16. I don't know how many of you cruise Craig's List but have you noticed all the Harleys for sale. No this is not ment to bash Harleys, it is just an observation I made. They are still asking an arm and a leg for them too. Everthing from Ultras to the old Toppers from the 50's. I assume that they all bought them and found out they couldn't afford them or they really don't ride and the fad is over. A 5 year old bike with 5K for miles... whats wrong with that picture? I'll stick with my Midnight thank you!
  17. Bought my old 84 again today.3 ventures are too many so I will probally sell the 84,but for now it is back in the stable.
  18. Hey Goose...I have gone through quite a few threads here on the Avons and even though there has been a problem with cracking, I bought them anyway because of the positive reports on handling and wear. I bought my set online from Jake Wilson...got them today. Looking at the date codes this is what I see... The front tire is: 02411MA and the rear tire is: 02403MA So does this mean the rear tire they sold me is 8 years old? Is this something I should be concerned with? It looks fine, but 8 years old seems a "tad" bit old considering the numbers of tires this company probably sells. One last quick question...I saw conflicting reports on wet weather handling on the Venoms...your actual opinion. Others feel free to leave opinions or comments too. Thanks... Wally
  19. In preparation for our big trip next week I just installed new tires on the Goldwing after 4300 miles. The OEM Dunlops were 50% worn and starting to cup already. Since I have 6200 miles to travel on this trip I wanted to start out on fresh tires (Bridgestone 704/709). Since the bike is so new and I plan to go through many tires while I own it I went ahead an bought a set of Centramatics to put on with the new tires. I read many reveiws how they make the bike super smooth and feel like it was on rails. I bought into the hype. In reality, I really don't see any improvement in balance over using Dynabeads. I have a friend that just put new tires and Dynabeads on his wing and it is just as smooth. For the $229 that the Centramatics I could easily have bought a lifetime supply of beads. Hopefullly, down the road I'll see the benefit of the Centramatics. Dennis
  20. ----in one of my work benches. I was looking for something and re-discovered this thing. I think it is a voltage regulator.?.?. Many, many, many (those are to explain my memory loss) years ago my '84 Venture Royale stopped charging. As I recall, I first changed the voltage regulator (cheap way out if it worked), but that did not fix it. I replaced the stator and it was like brand new. This thing has followed me around from Southern California to Michigan to Indianapolis. I do not know if it is the replacement I bought or if it's the one off of my VR. My guess is that it is the original from the VR. I do know it will not fit anywhere on my GL 1800. Here's the deal--- if you can identify it and have a need for it (or just want it), you can have it for the shipping cost. I would probably try to send it parcel post. No guarentee, but as I can best recall, it was working fine and I would not have kept it if I did not think it was O.K.
  21. I am bikeless for now - but I have something to keep me busy! I went to look at a rusty old 50 Ford F1 and bought this instead! It was restored 10 years ago but is pretty much stock. The guy bought another one to street rod and took the interior and good chrome off this one. So, I'm looking for 53 Mercury parts! Runs great and is going to be fun!!!
  22. Now that the Tour Deluxe is gone - I picked up a new project. A guy had a an in the local shopper selling a 1950 F1 pickup for 500 but it was more of a project than I wanted to tackle. He had bought it to restore but found a better one and it was all done. So I asked him if I could see it and he opened his shed that had several cars he had redone. 64 Galaxy, 50 Ford F1, an old Lincoln, a Ford Street Rod, and two 53 Mercs. The first one was done 10 years ago and the other he had just finished. He used the interior and chrome from his first car to do the second. The he said he wanted to sell the other car that runs great and has all the parts and is solid - it just needs put together. Long story short - I bought the fixer upper at a great price! Now I have something to keep me busy!!! The first pictures are the car I bought and the last few pictures are of his car. If any of you want to come help me put it together - let me know!
  23. Pulled into Racers Bar and Grill and saw this nice Royal Star in the parking lot. Turns out to be owned by a guy I've known for 3 years but have never seen him on anything except for his Valkyrie. It's a 96 he bought new and has hardly rode it since he bought his Valkyrie. He made that custom seat. Says he's now using it for his around town ride.
  24. Newbie here... I just bought an '07 RSTD and LOVE it!!!! In the past i have had a couple of Shadows and, most recently a Vulcan Classic. All were great bikes but vibrated too much for the Mrs to ride with me (arthritis in the hips). I bought the RSTD as i had heard that the vibration was minimal with the V4. Personally, I don't feel much but she still does. I've been reading here about the carb sync and I'm planning to do that but I'm wondering if the pipes have anything to do with it. It came with BUBs. Would stock pipes be smoother (albeit, quieter)? Thanks for any help and, sorry for the rambling!!!
  25. Some guy just came and bought my 06 Tour Deluxe! I wasn't really trying too hard to sell it but now it is gone. Not sure what I am going to do. I have my eye on a 53 Mercury!! Mark
