  1. I'm in need of a new windshield and was wondering if those of you with the Baggershield could tell me ... is there any kind of breeze or ventilation coming through the joint where the two parts meet? I was thinking of going with a wider Clearview with the vent to get that extra bit of a breeze when the temps hit around 32 C. (90 F) - like today for instance. From what I've read here, my wife may get a break from some of the buffeting with the wider shield, but that extra breeze would be nice in the heat. Yeah, I know, I'm getting old and wimpy but hey - we've paid our dues - now we deserve a little comfort. Anyway, with the sale on at Baggershield, that shield looks a bit more interesting to me now. Andy
  2. I'm running VISTA Home 64 bit. I have both 32 bit and 64 bit IE version 9 installed The computer did an automatic upgrade of Flash player even though it says it is not compatable with Vista 64 bit. I've tried (several times) to download a different version but it always seems to default to version 11. Any suggestions? I can't view a lot of YouTube stuff because it needs Flash.
  3. http://www.tomroush.com/inventory-details/title/indianapolis-in-westfield-in-used-1982-chevrolet-corvette/vehicleid/504376135-3004b2 Still a bit high IMO, but much better. If only I had the $$$ http://www.fritzinfishers.com/1978_Chevrolet_Corvette_Fishers_IN_150882095.veh
  4. Will the stock mufflers off an 08 RSTD fit an 09 RSV? When I got my RSV they already had the Harley R/K mufflers on them and they are a bit too loud for me... The OEM part #s are not the same, but I am thinking they are the same...... Thanks
  5. It has been a while since I anounced my intention to replace my Venture's tires with the New Bridgestone Exedra Max tires. So here is the latest on that. I finally got the Exedra Max tires mounted today. I think they are a good looking tire. At least as good as a black-wall tire can be. Their profile seems a bit rounder than the old Exedra. That should improve cornering quite a bit. The tread on the rear is really deep. Tire pressure is 41 and 42. Since it was cool I put them at 40. I will see where that takes them when they warm up. Also Bridgestone rates them highly for rain and the tire groves look like they can move some water. Being in Seattle it won't take long to discover the truth in that. On to the road test. For break in, other than rocking back and forth on the straight aways, I didn't do anything special. The first thing I noticed was the loud noise from my old tires was gone. For now at least these tires are very quiet. Yea. At freeway speed handling seemed normal, good. Lane changing and maneuvering is exactly where I like it to be. Long sweeping turns were quite enjoyable. I didn't pick up on any unpleasant traits. Another yea. Now for the acid test. Off to the parking lot. Lock over u-turns and sharp cornering was exceptional. A much better feel than either the old Bridgestones or the Dunlop 404s. That's three yeas. Summary It is difficult when comparing new tires to old ones. And I would have preferred white walls. But for the initial ride these tires seemed to meet all of my expectations. Only time will tell if these early perceptions will hold up. Or if the multi compound rubber provides the additional tire life I am hoping for. But for now I think the Max is a winner. And it comes in the right sizes. Mike
  6. So, I just bit the Bullet & will join the Hannigan group before too long. I just made a deposit on the Hannigan Trike kit for my RSV with all the extras. Delivery to be in later July. Wife will probably shoot me for sure now! Anyway, I'm excited. Thanks to everyone who had written positive opinions for these kits. I'll let you know how this all works out. Owen.
  7. Been thinking about getting a Bluetooth headset/intercom. Semi decided to get the Sena SMH10 because it is well rated as an intercom and seems to have the best sound. Found the Cardo Scala G9 which is new on the market but haven't found a review yet. A bit pricey but sure looks good as it will connect with up to 9 bikes although don't know how good the speakers are. Thought I would bring it to your attention.
  8. Searching Autotrader I've found a car I'm interested in at International Auto Group in Milwaukee. Anyone know if they are a reputable dealer? I would like to know a bit about them before I drive 500 miles to pick up a car. Thanks, Dennis
  9. I had a custom LED setup for my rear lights, but one of the diodes burned out. I had a friend look at it and because he doesn't know what the diode types are he doesn't think he can fix it. He tried, but it lasted about 30 seconds and burnt out again. Any suggestions for a replacement? The one I had was like this - http://www.customdynamics.com/Yamaha_tail_retro.htm - but $90 plus shipping seems a bit much for a bunch of LEDs on a board. Does anybody know a reasonable replacement for a better cost? I have a regular bulb in there for now, so I don't think there's any kind of short. Bike is a 2001 1300 RSV
  10. Early this morning, took my son Tye to Fort Lewis, WA to deploy with his Army SF team. They are in the air now via Commericial Airline and so in about 2 or 3 days he will arrive in Afgan. Yesterday Tye and I talked about the Ducati he wants to get when he returns. He likes the Green one but probably will get the red one. I suggested that he get one like the yellow one. Any bit of plastic helps the battle against the forces of Mother Nature. Plus a bit easier on the cleaning. Need I mentioned that his old Dad needs some wind protection. I tool him that the power band of the 1000cc one would be such a ride. I may have to toss in some $s to persuade him to get the larger cc. I've add some pictures so to help put a face to. He is to join the other half of his team already there. He said that the team's Taliban body count has already past the 300 mark for 2012 I reinforced to him that there is nothing back home with family for Friends issues that needs his attention for most of it is all 1st World problems compared to what he will be dealing with. The picture of the See No Evil , Speak No Evil and Hear No Evil, well that was in my Hospital recover room from my 4 Way By Pass Operation. He said way to go Dad, Great timing. He got to come home from his 3rd Afgan tour for a week. It cost him a pretty penny for air fare but the break was nice. Gave him a hand shake and a hug and said Good Hunting and God Speed with a Safe and Quick Return.
  11. OK The brakes are blead and now feel fine. I just took the second test ride and it is now back firing just a little bit on the # 3 and 4 cylinders when de- accelerating any hints on this new problem?
  12. So, last fall I changed the carb. diaphragms out in the 86. Found one with a slight crimp on the edge but no holes or problems. It was more of a preventative measure. Did a carb synch and set the idle circuits using the idle rpm drop method. Bike felt smooth and good power. However, my fuel mileage dropped from 40 commuting to 37. i run about 60-70 miles a day from work to home. The measured mpg is cold start with choke and all speeds. I could smell the exhaust as being a bit rich. Tried adjusting the idle screws to no avail. Fast forward to maintenence day. I have a set of needle shim washers and a color tune with me. MikeZ and I changed out the washers and set the synch again. It looked pretty good. I could also tell that there was a difference by the choke lever settings. The colortune needs modification to work on the venture. So, did not touch the idle settings. On the way back to San Antonio I got 37 heading into a wind. I used almost a gallon less fuel than Mike did on his 1989. Now, it had more luggage on board and did have a bit of an afterfire. Next week it was back to commuting to work. Checked several tanks of fuel and found I am up to 41mpg! And the rich smell at idle is gone. So my suspicion is that the replacement diaphragm are not only a bit stiffer than the originals, but possibly a bit thicker. Plug color is good. Next stop is figuring out a good way to use the colortune on the V-4. JB
  13. For those that may be too young to remember. http://www.vvmf.org/groundbreaking
  14. I joined a local gym yesterday, they have a 30 day free trial with unlimited access during business hrs, decided I need to not only lose weight but need to strength train too. I'm a bit overwhelmed looking at workout routines. Other than walking and PE class, never stepped into a gym before.
  15. http://www.automobilemag.com/features/news/1203_ducati_future_in_four_rings/index.html Ducati makes some excellent bikes. The Monster 696 is one for sure. Having 8-9 percent of the market means they are not a 'bit' player. It will be interesting to see how this turns out.
  16. I have recently picked up a Suzuki V-strom, and having a hard time getting back into the swing of things on the Venture. These issues have always been there, but I overlooked them because it was my 1st bike. (It is a 92 with 88,000 miles on it) The venture feels a bit bouncy, like there is enough spring but not enough dampening on the front & rear. There is a sensation that is a bit disconcerting that the rear end of the bike feels disconnected from the front, it is as if it moves independently of the front, like something is looser than it should be. That is really the only way I know how to describe it. I notice it mostly when I go over a bump or a dip. Could the be because it does not have solid motor mounts? Does the frame actually flex? Or maybe I just need a new rear shock? ($$$'s) ouch. The ride reminds me a bit of one of those old 70's cars that weighed 4500lbs after the shocks would wear out a bit. Speed doesn't seem to matter. I don't have experience with a well tuned (in better shape) Venture, so nothing to compare it to. Thanks, Brandon
  17. Howdy all: I'm a whiz at putting 2 and 2 together and getting 22. So please confirm for me what seems obvious and I'm likely getting hysterically wrong. Want to replace the stock exhaust on an '08 RSTD...and after much research had just about concluded to do this with a set of RK muffs. Acquired the necessary brackets and VTwin clamp, and have a set of '03 vintage RK pipes on the way. Still a little confused about half-specific comments about punching out a plug on one of the two pipes (which one? what plug? does 'punch out' mean knock out completely or just radicaly perforate? etc). But that's not actually my main question. Have to admit that the pipes I REALLY would like to mount are a pricey bit of kit...the Vance and Hines Monster Ovals that are made for the HD Touring bikes, including the Road King. Given that these have a street price north of $550 a set, I'm reconciled to waiting a bit to fluff the bank account a bit before pursuing. Help me out here: If the stock RK pipes will fit on the RSTD... And the V&H pipes are a slip-on fitment for the RK... Does this mean that I will be able to mount these muffs on the RSTD, using the same brackets/clamps as for the OEM Harley muffs? Any special considerations (as apparently arise for mounting Screeming Chicken cans)? By the way, yes I've considered just mounting aftermarket slip-ons already configured for the Venture/RSTD, but have to say that I'm just not that jazzed about any of the makes available (Bubs, KW, 4-2-4s, etc)....But the MO's have tickled the lust button. Muchas Gracias, amigos
  18. And I didn't even get bit by a radioactive spider!!! Done all myself by falling down and trying to drive my elbow into the concrete floor. I'd rather dealt with the spider at this point. Last Thurday at work I took a flying backwards leap and did a 4" foot drop onto the concrete and I remember hitting my head but apparently the elbow got there fast and furious. (oop... different movie) When my head quit spinning I tried to get up but the left arm wouldn't bend. At all. Could not support myself but finally got right side up and back on my feet. Checked myself out and I seemed to be fine except for the left elbow bleeding a bit and the stiffness. So....being a guy I cleaned it up and threw a bandage on it an finshed my shift. I did stop and notify the Director before I left that I had taken a spill and just wanted to record it and NO I didn't need emergency treatment. Hey! Like I said...I'm a guy and how many times have I cracked an elbow, knee, heel, wrist, head or other body part in my life. Not enough paper for a score card on that one. Went home and cleaned it up and dropped the old joint in the ice bucket for a while. That helped. A bit. Then the swelling started up! I mean POOF. Man I got a big elbow! But being a guy....... I bandaged it up and went to bed. NOW..... this is where those of you with weak tummies might want to wander back to a nice safe posting. And for those of you with the macho blood lust.... NO I didn't attach any pics. But I woke up during the night and wandered in to scratch my name in the litter box. (cat hates that) But when I flipped on the light I glanced in the mirror and WOW! When was I in a fist fight? Blood all over my face and chest and the arm is drenched. Holy Smoke! Went back an turned on the lights in the bedroom and the bed looked like a scene from a slasher movie. I seemed to have been bleeding a bit. Being a guy..... I changed the bandage and the sheets and went back to bed. So... over the next few days of working I did my usual routine and kept cleaning the elbow and changing bandages. Seems like I'm gonna survive. Swelling is still there but the arm is loosening up a bit. Yeah, I'm fine. Second notice..... be a good time to check out the Disney channel kids. Wait! The kids would love this part. But come Monday.... things got odd. The arm hurt, the bleeding was slow but steady and there was a lot of clear fluid draining. When I got home I asked my daughter to give me a hand and help me take a look at the wound on my elbow and help clean it up. After all how many of you can see the back of your elbow? So she digs out the med kit and sets to work. She's always showed some interest in being a nurse. She cuts off the old bandage and pours Peroxide over the wound. Nice tingle. She mentioned it didn't look like a scrape but more like a puncture at the point of the elbow. Like a star shaped hole. So being a guy .... I want to take a look. Last warning! I raise my arm up, not easy to do, and hold it in front of me in front to the mirror but I can't bend my arm back. So I use my other hand to pull the left hand back towards my shoulder. Yikes! I felt a pulse in my arm and a blast, not a little either, of blood and clear fluid shot out of my elbow and covered the wall, mirror, sink top, and shelves. I heard her scream and I turned around and, well that was a bad idea as I sprayed her, the shower curtains and towels rack as I did. So rather than tend to the mess right away I had to hold her head out of the toilet for about five minutes. I think she has considered her future in nursing is at a low point right now. Ok, Like I said ..... I'm a guy. Now I'm concerned. So the visit to the Doc was informative and productive. When I told him about the bizzarre discharge he looked at me somewhat oddly. I asked him if he's ever seen that before. Nope. I told him to hold up a towel in front of elbow and did the same flex again. About a foot and a half out. Now I got three Doc's interested! So all in all they determined I had damaged the membrane that cushions the joint it the elbow. When it started to swell up and the pressure from moving my arm to that postion it just ruptured and the fluid and blood make a hasty exit though the first available hole. The one in my elbow. And I got a bucket full of pills from the Doc's and I get to visit with them every other day for a while. Yea! My favorite pastime! My bosses only question was how long would it take to heal. I swear, I want to show him my lil trick. Ok, Ok .... so I'm not shooting web stuff but I got to admit I'd never seen nuttin like this in all my years of getting banged up and damaged. Too bad it didn't happen before Halloween! I would have been the coolest guy on the block. Yeah, kids love this stuff. Myself, I think next time I'm going to go the "HULK" kind of thing. I'm not so fond of cleaning up after "Spidey". And I get a lkick out of the "Puny Human" line! So there, it's a nasty, gorey story but has anybody experienced anything like this? And you were warned..... several times. Spidey err.... Mike
  19. Yes folks, were stripping down again.....jump in, the waters a bit chilly but what the hey.....
  20. I mentioned in an earlier thread that my ignition switch has started to go (Have to wiggle it around to get things going). I am now attempting to install a fuse block (ATC style - 6 positions) and some relays (Driving lights, headlight) to avoid a repeat of this problem. I also plan on installing a switched bypass - just in case. In the meantime, I ran across a thread where someone disassembled their ignition switch, cleaned it and reinstalled it. I was wondering if this is worth the trouble? Will it last or die an early death? I read another thread that stated that sanding the contacts might remove all or most of any coating they had leading to an early failure. If this is true, I see no reason to do that much work only to have to replace the switch later. The stores in this area are light on parts so I had to get a 6 fuse block. It's a bit big, and trying to fit it near the battery is tricky. I'm thinking of attaching it by means of a hook and loop fastener to the rear fender just behind the driver's seat. The only other available spot is under the front of the driver's seat over the various vent hoses. As far as I can tell, the seat doesn't press it against the hoses but it is still a tight fit. The fender seems like a better option. I've attached pics of the block and the two potential mounting spots. If I go for the fender, I will have to attach something to the bottom of the block to fit between the existing wires - sort of a smaller pedestal. Squeezing it under those wires would make a fuse change too difficult. Does anyone see a disadvantage to the fender mount? There should be enough weather protection but I could try to fabricate some kind of cover to give it a bit more protection if necessary. Sorry this is so long, but I want to get it right the first time. I hadn't planned on this and had been saving towards the upgraded clutch kit, which I also need. Now this has thrown me a bit of a curve as dollars are a bit tight these days- as most of us know only too well! Andy
  21. Do any of you know of an epoxy or similar glue for plastics that is black? My favorite, JB Weld, mixes up gray, and I want to do a little gluing on the CB dash panel where the glue may be seen a little bit. Thanks, Jeremy
  22. ... for getting a bit "bent out of shape"
  23. Was riding to work this morning, got about 10 minutes from home, and happened to look down at the volt gage - sitting smack in the middle of the "12" - at speed, engine turning a normal RPM, no excessive electrical loads turned on. Hmm...this is not normal... My volt gage is normally very consistent and actually quite accurate. SOOO - thankful that I looked at the gage and caught the problem while the battery was still charged and keeping everything going - I turned the Venture around and exchanged it for my Virago. No time to check anything out yet, but I noticed on the way home that the gage does dip below 12 when the engine is idling and climbs a tiny bit to the 12 when revved, which sounds just like years ago when the Virago had one of its stator coils short out - it kept charging just a tiny little bit, enough to keep the engine ignition working, but not enough to run the headlight. So I need to do the tests to confirm, but I need to know what's out there nowadays for stators. Is there still a company that makes an upgraded stator for the old Ventures? Jeremy
  24. Was cleaning the motorcycle and noticed the gear shift shaft would move in and out a little bit is this normal? It is an 83 Standard. Thanks Kirk
  25. Took off a bit earlier than usual today on my RSV and the temps were a bit low (Around 52 F.). Anyway after about 3 or 4 miles, I passed a cage and decided to distance myself from it quickly. So I cranked on some throttle at about 125 kph (about 78 mph) in 4th (Well, a pretty hard crank!) and the engine revved with little acceleration! Clutch slip!! I eased off then ran it more easily to around 140 kph (About 87mph) and shifted into 5th. I then gave it a good shot of throttle and, sure enough, it slipped again. On the way back, I ran it to 120 kph and when I cranked the throttle in 4th there was either no clutch slip or so little that I couldn't detect it. Now I have read the posts regarding the weak clutch spring and adding a plate, but this slipping when barely warmed up and not slipping when fully warmed up kind of throws me. Am I dealing with just a weak spring or is something else going on here? Any ideas? Andy
