  1. ok my 84 venture royale is running realy rich. you can smell the raw fuel when its running and mileage is down under 30 MPG. I've been running seafoam through it every other tankfull but it hasn't effected the MPG to much if at all. bike is running great aside from that. I love the bike but currently its costing me more then driveing my car. any idea where i can adjust how much fuel is being dumped into the engine or what ellse I should be doing to improve my MPG issue?
  2. Sorry guys I tried the search first but it didn't come up with anything. Where can I get a wire to go from my Ipod to the bike? besides where, what would I be looking for?
  3. I was getting the trailer wired today to go to Kbrans in the morning. I hot wired it to under the license plate because I have separate turn signals on the trailer. When I checked it with the trailer connected everything worked fine. I disconnected the trailer to get the bike out out the shed that I park in and now I have only a head light, dash lights, radio and the bike will start and run. I have no speedometer, odometer, fuel gauge, turn signals, 4 ways or brake lights........what is up with this? I turned the ignition on and off several times with no change in the condition. Mind you I don't even have the trailer hooked to the bike! I can't believe that it is a fuse problem because it is effecting too many circuits. Nee help quick! Mark
  4. Brought my bike home last night after having the new rear shock installed, a new rear Avon Venom X and the regular 28k mile service, which included Carb Sync and steering bolt tightening. I didn't realize how bad my bike has been handling. :crying:The shock must have been going bad for awhile. Also, recently I had noticed a little shake of the bars and slow speed handling degradation, so I asked them after the service if the steering head bolt was loose and it was by almost a half turn. I feel like I'm riding a new bike again. Haven't checked to see what air is in the shock yet or the tire pressure, but plan to do that tonight. But just how it is right now is a HUGE improvement. I just can't believe it is such a difference:confused24: I can't wait to get out and ride Friday Morning. Its amazing how fabulous these bikes are! when everything is up to par.
  5. Ok, here's how my story goes. I posted a while back about my coiil going bad. I checked the coild, the resistance was bad, bought another coil. After putting it on if croaked after only 50 miles. Got it back home and tested it, resistance off. Book said to check pickup coil. Best I could tell, I tested it and it was with in specs. Went trolling around on the delphi boards and from what I read, if a pickup coil goes bad, it goes all the way bad and the bike won't run anylonger. Same for the ECU, if it goes bad, it goes all the way bad and the bike won't run at all. My bike will run, it's just on 3 cyl. Would it be anyone elses opinion that that seems to rule out the pickup coil and ECU? I'm thinking I got a hold of a 1 in 50 OEM coil that was bad. I can't think of any other reason why only one coil would go bad. Any ideas??????????????
  6. Ok, I know that this is like my 3rd post this week but just bear with me. I have only had my bike for 4 months and have alot to learn. I recently "punched out" the stock mufflers on my RSV. It really gave me the sound I was looking for. The exhaust has been popping on deceleration (which I figured was normal and I needed to get the carbs synched). I did not have time to have the carbs worked on before my last trip to Southern California (about 800 miles round trip). The bike ran great going there but started running a little rough coming home. I set the cruise at 80mph (which according to police radar is only 75mph) almost the whole way. Also, my mpg was about 32 on the trip there and 30 on the way back. I was getting 42-45mpg around town before. So here is my question: Do I need better air cleaners that will let more air in now that my exaust breathes better or could this be a simple maintanence problem such as needing new spark plugs? Also, am I riding too fast and causing my bike to be outside the power-band creating poor gas mileage? Any and all input is welcomed. Confused, Bubba:confused24:
  7. Just wanted to say I am one HAPPY camper...Just installed a new set of Dunlop 404's on my 83, it's like it is a completly different bike. The handling is awsome, it is soooo much fun to ride. The wife gave permission to "upgrade" to a newer bike, we are looking at either a Valkyrie Interstate or a Yamaha Royal Star Venture, price will probably determine what I buy. That being said, I don't want to get rid of my 83 royal.
  8. I have a strange rattle in my engine. When the bike is tilted to the left, while on the side stand, there is a rattle. When I pull the bike up straight, the rattle goes away. Anyone got any suggestions on what you think this may be? It has been doing it for quite a while. When I had the collector off the other day, I could not tell if there were any baffles loose in it. 9. I'm not the greatest with computers but i'm gonna try and put pics of my bike on here but this trunk was on my bike and i know its not original cause its got a different key. there was sitcker on the top that said ABS but unless i've just been missing it i haven't seen pics of other bikes with speakers in the trunk. that's what i really need is a replacment speaker cover for the right side but it's tough to find something when your not really sure what its from. any help would be appreciated
  10. Hi all Got something really weird going on with my '02 RSV. A couple weeks ago the audio cassette/radio stated cutting out at higher volumes, but seemed fine at 9 or below. The whole display would cycle on/off like a circuit breaker was being tripped. Still trying to figure this out when the other day after a short ride I restarted it and the oil and temp warning light come on but dim. Pulled over to check it out and seemed fine so went to restart and here's where it gets wild. Turned the switch to on and the starter kicks in on its own and starts the bike! Shut her off and tryed it again and now stater won't kick in with the switch. Fooled around a while and bike starts on its own again, so rode home a few miles. Repeatedly self started in the garage, audio won't play on acc but does on "on", oil/temp lights get brighter when clutch is let out, no response on the starter switch now. Once while checking out the audio menu on acc, the starter just starts cranking her over and wouldn't stop until switched to "on" and the bike started. No blown fuses, engine warning light not blinking as manual says if an electrical fault. Checked continuity on the main switch, ok. Any ideas whats up here? Demonic possession? Help!
  11. ok so the other day I got my new rear tire put on i got the standard black wall tire I want to get a white wall front tire for the bike but my dealer says no company makes a white wall radial that would fit my bike. has anyone run into this?
  12. ok i know my bike still isn't running great yet but i was kinda curious at what RPMs you all are at when your leaving a stop? my bike seems to want to try and stall if i'm under 3500 rpms. just want to know if this is way off from what everyone ellse has to do with there 1st gen
  13. Looking for some help with a strange noise I heard this afternoon on the way home from work. It sounded like metal grinding or a bearing spinning. At the same time I heard the noise the bike pulled to the left and slowed down. I did not hear the noise with just the bike running so I think it is coming from the wheels or drive train not the engine. Does anyone know what a failed front wheel bearing might sound like? Any thoughs? I checked the front wheel for side to side play and there was none. I put the bike on the center stand and ran the back wheel up to speed but I could not duplicate the problem. Any and all thoughts would be appreaciated.
  14. Hey Folks, I need a little help on a 1999 RSV. I purchased it on Ebay from a dealer in FL and had it shipped to my son-in-laws in Wilton, CT. We're flying to CT next week to ride. Here's the glitch...when the bike was dleivered, Mark inadvertently left the ignition on accessory and ran the battery down. I told him he had to remove the seat in order to gain access to the battery to charge it. The bike has an aftermarket Saddleman Road Sofa seat. Below is what he emailed me whe he tried to get the seat off. " I have been unable to get the seat off of your bike to date. There is a bolt in the front of the seat with a nut which needs to come off but the bolt is spinning freely. The top of the bolt seems to be within the seat with no means of getting to it. I am also barely able to get to the nut so there is no way to secure the bolt while turning the nut. I will keep trying but I am beginning to lose hope. I worked on it for about two hours so far this morning." Now, can the battery be charged from the AuxiliaryDC Jack? If so, where do I tell him to look for it and how would he goa about using it to charge the battery? I haven't even seen the bike yet, so I'm just going from what I can find on the net. Thanks for any help. Jeff
  15. On my 1999 RSV I replaced my 4 year old Yuasa, which died while on vacation, with a new Yuasa. Bike ran fine for a few days then it sat for about a week before I took it out today. Fired right up. We rode about 15 miles then went to eat. When we returned the bike was dead. Luckily I was parked downhill and was able to roll/bump start it. It fired up on the first bump. Rode it home and it was dead when I tried to start it again in the garage. Any suggestions on checking out the charging system? I sure dont want to give the dealer 2-3 hours labor just checking out a charging system. Headlights didnt dim when I was firing up the bike, but they did dim a bit when I couldnt start it. I have the factory manual, just looks a bit confusing. Any special tools/gauges that I need? Procedures? Etc? Thanks.....
  16. I posted this in another thread but decided it would be best served in a thread of its own. As some here have stated before, and I agree 100%, the rear brakes on these bikes are WAY to sensitive. Some have argued that if you truly get to know your bike that it's not a problem but many have reported locking the rear brake in a panic situation. I know that I have done so a couple of times. The rear brakes just lock up way to easily and that is NOT a good thing. I've known Rick for a long time and though I don't profess to be a Venture expert, much of what I've learned about both the first and second gen Venture, I learned from Rick. He has been riding these bikes since they came out in '83 and I do consider him to be an expert on them. Rick has built SS Ventures and come up with a lot of good ideas where the Ventures are concerned. Rick realized early on that the rear brakes left a lot to be desired. I'll let him tell how he came to that conclusion in his own mind but after doing so, he set out to improve the system. He started out trying to link the front and rear as the first gen Ventures were. That turned out to not be the best solution though. He then came up with a system that incorporates a proportioning valve inline to the rear caliper and said that the rear braking is drastically improved. He send me one to test and evaluate on my own bike and it came while I was in Fort Collins. It will be an easy install and I'll get it done next weekend and try it out. I will then report my feelings about it here. If I'm as impressed with it as Rick is, then he plans to put it together as a kit and sell it to anybody who wants it. It is Rick's opinion that the system is good enough that it could actually save somebodies life. I know Rick well enough that if he is that confident with it, then I certainly want it on my bike.
  17. I just got my superbrace today but it wont fit. Its the Venture model 1100 but I have a 1990 bike with brand new boots. It seems the superbrace wont go in there with the boots. Any hints?
  18. Hi Guys I need the Headset cords for the front and passenger helmets that go from the headset to the bike. My bike is a 1990 Yamaha Venture Royale XVZ1300 with the factory radio, headsets are J&M 5pin. Let me know how much $$. James (NomadicBear)
  19. While i am a way from home my boss decided to get my 2nd gen up and running. Today while out riding it it died on him he said he was going along at 55 with the cruise on when it happened. No matter what he did the bike would not start again. While waiting for a ride he decided to check the tank the gauge said it was a 3rd full he opened the cap and says he had a lot of gas pressure escape then all of a sudden the bike caught when he tried it. I know back in the days with cars this happened but i have never heard of it happening to a bike so i wonder is vapor lock what really happened or might it be something else
  20. In a 30 mile (or so) radius from me (Amherst, NY) who wouldn't mind my visiting them for a look-over of my bike. I have about one week left, on my warranty period, and would like someone (knowledgeable with the 1st Gens.) maybe take my bike for a test ride, and afford me their opinion. I hope that I am not asking too much, here, and would be willing to pay you for your time. All in all, it would mean ever so much to me, and (quite possibly) alleviate some concerns. Nothing, outside of what has been posted already, has cropped up. But I feel that another - much more experienced - rider just might be able to share some important & very helpful information with me. Advanced thanks. Evergodloving@aol.com 716-906-1692
  21. Yes...and FINALLY . I received a call today, at 5:50pm, informing me that my bike was ready for pickup. But they were closing at 6pm, so that left me with a wait for tomorrow. I can't wait to get my VR back, and I will touch back here right after I do.
  22. I noticed a few small dark drips under my bike and when I investigated I saw that they are oil drips, and they are comming from one of the tubes that just end under the bike. The other bikes I have had have all had these tubes and none of them have dripped oil before. This is a 2007 Venture and only has a few thousand miles on it and I'm not happy. Hopefully someone here will let me know whats going on and if it's something I should be concerned about and if I should take it back to the dealer for repair.

    Dogs are STUPID !

Probably not a new brilliant revelation for anyone, but here's my story: Yesterday after work I took my 84 Venture Standard out for a short ride on some back roads to unwind a bit. Heading down a road I was exploring I hear a couple of dogs start barking. No big deal, I think. Then out of the corner of my left eye I see this big Weimeraner running towards me. I assumed (bad idea to assume, you know) that he would stop at the edge of the street and keep barking, or maybe even turn and run parallel to the bike until he got tired (I was going maybe 25-30 mph at the time). But no, this big dumb animal has the mindset of a center linebacker on a pursuit angle for an open-field tackle and runs straight into the side of my bike! Now I am no expert in what to do in this kind of situation. I didn't swerve to the right (away from the approaching dog) as there was a ditch and no shoulder, nor did I swerve to the left (towards the dog), nor did I stop suddenly when I saw him approaching (as I had no way of knowing if he would try to use any of my limbs for a chew toy). So I just kept her steady and tried to hold my line and WHAM! 900 pounds of man and machine impact 100 pounds of dog with corresponding momentum. Then I bring the bike to a stop and turn on the hazards, and watch as my left side luggage box goes sliding down the road past me (finished side down of course, just like buttered toast I guess). I don't know if I forgot to lock it when I last put it on (83-85 luggage is detachable, you know) or if the dog hit it so hard that it just popped off. Either way, the impact was sufficient to bend the luggage guard on the left side back a full 2 inches. Fortunately the luggage box was not shattered, just scratched up and the reflector busted (anyone got a spare?) from it's 40 yard sled ride on the asphalt, so I put it back on the bike and turned around to see if anyone was home to inform them that I was able to avoid being tackled by their idiot football player wannabe dog, and to see if the big lug was still alive. The dog was nowhere in sight, but I did talk to the owner who offered to pay for damages to my bike (nice guy really--just needs a fence!) and gave me his cell number. I talked to him later last night and low and behold "Duke" showed up back at the house--bruised up, but amazingly not crippled. I guess the lesson learned here is, never assume that a dumb animal has the good sense NOT to try and tackle your bike! By the way, any suggestions on what I could have done to avoid this Kamikaze Weimeraner? I'd rather not have a similar repeat experience in the future!
  24. Hello, I am trying to track down the lack of turn signal on my 1991 I have checked all fuses and connections-the bike is almost skinless should I consider replacing the signal relay?-its $130.00!! The front "turn signal" lights are fine in a runny light condition-but no turn signal. The back siganl lights give me nothing-all bulbs are new I worked hard all winter to get the bike painted and detailed-just bought it last year BUT I can't ride in Cleveland Ohio without turnsignals Your input would be greatly appreciated
  25. Wish I had done it a long time ago. Ten bucks for a pack of springs from bike bandit. I got a new gasket too, the old one was very hard. The lever doesn't seem stiffer than the old one, but I couldn't get the clutch to slip. Used to slip above 1/2 throttle and 4000rpms. Now I may have to learn how to ride the bike all over again. Swap out only took 30 minutes. I left the bike on the side stand and didn't even lose any oil.
