  1. Some of you may have read my thread about the hit and run Saturday. Now it appears I'm going to need a new fender. If I could save enough to cover the deductable I might try to make the repairs myself. Does anyone know how big of a job to replace the rear fender, right saddle bag support and trunk bucket? What all has to be disassembled? Here are photos of the parts that need to be replaced. www.traynorphoto.com/rockytop Thanks, Dennis
  2. I read through the leveling links threads that come up when searched here. My interpretation of it is that these bikes typically sit high in the rear?? My bike sits high in the front. Much higher then the rear actually. I was going to check air in shocks tonight but all my gauges start at 10psi. It is something you could pick out in a picture actually. ?? Is is it typical for the "ride height" to be more in the front then rear??? Or should I see a more pronounced level stance?? TIRES ARE FRONT= Dunlop D404F 150/80-16 REAR= Dunlop D404 150/90B15
  3. It looks like this now http://im1.shutterfly.com/media/47a1dc29b3127ccefc0560aa75ce00000030O08AZtmjJo0aOAe3nws/cC/f%3D0/ps%3D50/r%3D0/rx%3D550/ry%3D400/ Tank shot (want to add bib with pockets & chrome cover) ?? NOTE aftermarket tach. **ALSO** Has anyone attempted to change the colors of the backlight on the dash (speedo area). I though if it was blue it would be really nice. http://im1.shutterfly.com/media/47a1dc31b3127ccefc01ae9bb82b00000030O08AZtmjJo0aOAe3nws/cC/f%3D0/ps%3D50/r%3D0/rx%3D550/ry%3D400/ Front end light bar. Can lights be added to this? Does entire bar need replaced to add driving lights??? I do not find adapters of any kind listed anywhere. http://im1.shutterfly.com/media/47a1dc31b3127ccefc015761f83500000030O08AZtmjJo0aOAe3nws/cC/f%3D0/ps%3D50/r%3D0/rx%3D550/ry%3D400/ I am not digging the rear lights. Will probably get rid of the clears front and rear and go with something different. I like to be seen and these lights hide in daylight. http://im1.shutterfly.com/media/47a1dc31b3127ccefc005f7a595600000030O08AZtmjJo0aOAe3nws/cC/f%3D0/ps%3D50/r%3D0/rx%3D550/ry%3D400/ Looking for thoughts and ideas. This bike has 3100 miles on it so my money can be spent on goodies right now. It is in "need" of nothing. Dealer went ahead and brought it up to 4,000 mile service requirements so I am good for a while.
  4. Does anyone know off the top of thier head what the part number is for ECB brakes, front and rear for the RSV?
  5. Is there an advantage in using a rear gear assembly from and FJR vs a Vmax? What about the speedo sensor?
  6. Is the company SPORTMAX that provided VMAX parts still around? I can't seem to get to their website. This is the outfit that Freebird got his VMAX rear end from. Anyone know? Brian
  7. I'm trying to install a brake speedbleeder on the rear of my 89 VR. I've removed the 2 side bolts, the 2 bottom bolts. the 3 reflector nuts and the 3 bottom screws for the lower chrome piece. The Bag is loose but can't seem to wiggle it out. The center reflector screw is giving me some challenges. What is there left for me to do? Also the bottom, front there is a metal bracket revitted to the floor can someone tell me what that is for?
  8. OK, I'm sure this is nothing but......I found the attached fragement of metal in an area where I have been working on my 2nd Gen rear hub. I've done the following:- Remove hub and shaft from bike. Pulled shaft out of hub and regreased both ends, replace checking spring was in place. Remove hub gear wheel from hub after removing circlip and dust cover for regreasing. Now I'm sure this fragement has come from somewhere else as it is so clean, but just thought I'd check in case anyone hase see anything like it before from the rear end of one of these bikes. Its clearly broken at one end and has a tapering V groove on one side. I hope the pics are good enough for identification. All help gratefully recieved. Cheers
  9. After saying last year that im done with mods to the bike, some fools here come up with more parts to sell us and we, like sheep, shell out bucks for them. A simple tail light mod, like adding 2-30 red led strips to the rear as a run/brake light combo turned onto Sky Doc's R1 caliper conversion, which turned into replacing all brake/clutch lines with SS lines which turned into rebuilding the rear caliper and new HH pads, and only the best for me, buying that new 5.1 brake fluid which turned into replacing the rear valve cover gasket which turned into replacing the spark plugs which turned into flushing the cooling system which turned into adding Carbon Ones crash bar bracket, which is turning into 2 more smaller red led lights on the back to replace a burned out one, which will lead to an oil change and rear fluid change. Add a wash and wax and im done for good....... Yea Right!!
  10. Just ordered 2 new tires and 2 new helmets from Motorcycle Superstore. Almost the last thing we "needed" before our 2700 mile ride trip this summer. Got the Dunlop Elite 3 for front and rear...and the HJC IS-33 helmets in Wine to match (as close as we could) the Black Cherry '06 RSV. $495 for the total order ($130 ea/Helmet and $102 front/$130 rear). Not sure if it's a good price but I couldn't really find much better anywhere...free shipping and no tax though...so that helps.
  11. for my 83 rear, plan on E3 and looking for MU90B16.(recommended from dunlop fitment guide) Dennis Kirk has a MU90HB16 listed here http://www.denniskirk.com/jsp/search/search.jsp?searchString=mu90b16&store=&resultType=subCategories&x=13&y=7 Question, what is the H in MU90HB16?, For that matter would be interested to know what all the letter/number positions mean. Best I can tell from dunlop site info below is MU90=140/90 H=speed rating 130mph B=unk? 16=assume rim size? Without getting into tire type discussion, would this work on my scoot? 12. hi all monday i drove the trike up to troup, texas, to have them look it over. wow what a nice place. one of their tech named david meet me and wanted to know how they could help. i explaned that i had just bought this '99 rsv trike with their kit installed. and could they go over the trike and tell me anything about it. he took it into the shop and put it on a lift. came out a little later and said the axel ring & pinon seal was leaking. also said that they did not instrall the kit on the rsv there, that one of their dealers did it. also told me that it was an early kit as 1998 or 1999. that it did not have the air bags installed. as they started doing this in 2000. also stated that they stamp a serial # on each rear end reguard less of which kit it goes to. that my # was a low one. well after a couple of hours david came out and told me he was done. he had fixed the rear end seal, adjusted the suspension / frame. fixed a tail light, some side molding. all this at work and time at NO CHARGE. yep that's right NO CHARGE, wow was i surprised. as we were shaken hands he told me we get you next time. if your ever in the area go by their plant for a tour of the place and say hi. reguards don c.
  13. I had a look at my rear brake pads today and was surprised at how much material was still there after 20,000 miles of hard riding. I use a lot of rear break for low speed stability, and city riding etc. these are the EBC Double H Sintered pads and thus far have already outlasted the previous OEM rear pads. I haven't pulled them out of the bike to measure them against a fresh pair but looks like less than half worn, and even the inside one doesn't appear to be as much worse worn than the outside one, which is typical for our bikes. I was planning on just swapping them out, in for outside to get equal wear on them.. I wasn't expecting so little wear on them. Wow.. I always carry a spare set of pads with me on the bike (doesn't take any space) as I got caught once with metal on metal pads on the wrong side of a long weekend holiday out of country.. ugh. and those had less than 20,000 in them.. but thus far I must say I am very happy with these pads over OEM Your mileage, as they say, may vary.. (opinions too)
  14. Ok, yes its poor mainentance, but I've just got the old brake pads out from the rear wheel to find the left one is metal on metal, Ouch, right one is not much better. The caliper pistons are reluctant to go back and the repair kit here in the UK is crazy money. I have'nt tried really hard to get them back as I will need to clean them first. Anyone got any ideas?
  15. I ride a 2008 RSTD with a Hannigan side car. I had the final drive swapped out (RMSportmax using VMAX gearing), and a Kumho rear tire installed last week. Went for my first ride Saturday. The bike rides great, but I'm now hearing a noise from the rear of the bike. It sounds like a tire noise but I'm not sure.....I want to make sure it's not the final drive. Question for those that have Kumho rear tires installed, do they sound different than standard tires? Secondly, for those that have swapped out final drives, anybody had a similar issue? Thanks, OscarV
  16. Just before I take out the rear wheel on my 2000 RSV (18,000 miles) does anyone have any last minute tips for re-greasing etc anywhere important while the back is broken down like this, and is there any way of checking if the rear shock has gone once its off the bike. There dos not appear to be any oil leak etc. Oh and next time I need to take off the reare wheel I'm going to use Dons method of front whell off, drop the nose and then off with the rear (if it works for RSV 2nd gens). Its taken two days on and off to get the rear wheel clear. Thanks for all your tips... oh the reason for this strip is to thry and stop the bad sqweek from the rear shock everytime I take it off the centre stand.
  17. Hi can anyone help me i have a 2008 royal star dour deluxe and about last may i had a ignition coil go on my bike rear off side, at christmas i had the rear near side go on my bike to, last week i just got round to replaceing that one to now the other one has stop working again is it the coil that are at fault or dose anyone no of any other reson way they keep going wrong. peter (From England)
  18. Converted rear turn signals to stop, tail, and turn and installed light bar for $76.00 total. Got the kit at cruiser customizing and the light bar from JC Whitney. I wired the light bar to function as tail and stop. http://i278.photobucket.com/albums/kk114/bigpine33/016.jpg?t=1295578080
  19. Came across this in a magazine recently and was wondering if anyone had checked into it or has tried them. If it functions as described, I might try one on the rear brake of my RSV. http://www.eglidegoodies.com/id254.html
  20. Does the rear fender need to come off to svc the swing arm? I've never done this part of the maintenance.
  21. Is it possible to remove the rear wheel on a 2nd Gen venture with a side car still attached? If so, what is the procedure?
  22. I found some real nice red running lights with chrome at the truck stop in Balwin, Fl. I then made a metal bracket to go on both sides:dancefool: of the license plate. The brackets mount to the screws that hold the license plate. I then drilled holes in the bracket and mounted the red running lights to each side of the license plate. It really increased the red lights from the rear and was very inexpensive to install. Ofcourse I had to hook up the electric to the lights which was right there in the rear of the bike. Several of my friends really liked the hookup and so Iinstalled them on there respective bike. "Not all Ventures", forgive me!! ha ha . I am attaching some pictures of the rear lights installed. Any questions please let me know. Hope it helps someone out there. If the photo does not come in with this post let me know and I will e-mail the photos to you. Dan4852@aol.com DanC
  23. OK, its me again with MORE questions. This time as I basically reading the repair manual from front to back I notice that the RSTD and I assume the Venture show different size main jets for each cylinder. Main jet (M.J) #1, #122.5 #2 #122.5 #3: #117.5 #4: #120 Why is this. I know on my wife's HD Fatboy the front cylinder gets different spark plugs from the rear due to the difference in the heat range of the cylinders as the front will run cooler due to getting colder air as you ride, the back gets the warm air from the front cylinder. But this is a water cooled engine, soooo all the cylinders should be within a few degrees of each other. It uses the same spark plug front and rear why not the same jets? Just doesn't make sense to me, can anyone explain? Tom
  24. I ride the bike to work most days, but luckily it has been cold here for the past month. Today I was headed West sitting 1/10 of a mile from my house, making a left turn onto my road. I had to wait for a few cars going East, so I could make the turn. A Saturn pulls up behind me and as he's stopping, a Jeep slams into his rear, knocking him into my rear. I was pushed forward a car length or more, and it knocked everything off of my sun visor and all of the pennies out of my ashtray. This was in a Ford F150. I called my wife to tell her I'd be a little late getting home, and when I told her what happened, she said "it's a good thing you weren't riding!". As soon as she said it I thought my knees would buckle. I hadn't thought about it before then. Be careful out there!
  25. Any suggestions on where to look to buy a Zero to 30 PSI hand pump for the front fork air suspension. Most places seem to be high $ for the Progressive pump. I do the rear shock by starting up my compressor, running it up to 45 PSI and shutting it off. Then I fill the rear shock until the pressure is balanced between the shock and the compressor.
