    06 RSV left me stranded

I left for work yesterday morning like usual before daylight and just pulled out on the highway when the bike sputtered and died. I started it up again and it run for just about 5 seconds and each time it would run even less till it would not run at all. I pushed it about 500' back to the shop, by the way it is not an easy bike to push and loaded it up on the trailer and took it to Broken Arrow, Ok to the dealer where I purchased it. They told me it would be 14 working days before they could even look at it. I called another dealer and told him the same story how it just sputtered and quit and he said it sounded like the fuel pump and that he has seen a rash of bad fuel pumps this year. Has anyone else had this problem? This is the first time in 36 years of riding that I have had a bike quit me other than a flat tire. Just glad I hadn't gone to far from the house. Ride safe!
  2. Went to Marcus Dairy in CT near the CT/NY boarder today. Big meet every Sunday morning there. Pulled in and parked next to an 08 then went walking the bikes (maybe 400 to 500). Went to front on building and seen two more 08's parked side by side. I've had mine for a year now and haven't seen but one on the road so see three at the same time actually parked was cool. Talked to all three of the owners and told them about this site. Sure hope they make it here. The pair at the front was two buddies who had bought their bikes together. I asked if either of them had done the leveling link yet and they not only told me no but that for the shorter of them the dealer had actually lowered the rear end. I asked him about the low speed handling and he was very descriptive (would quote him but this is a family site) about his feelings on that subject as said he was was getting sick and tired of dropping it in the parking lot. We talked a bit and I told him that instead of lower the rear end he should go back to the dealer and have them return it to stock height and then come here and learn how to drop the front end. After I got done explaining how the geometry was made worse by dropping the rear end I thought his buddy was going to bust a gut. All he could do was bust his chops about letting the dealer do the exact opposite of what needed to be done to get the results he really wanted. Got a feeling these guys will fit right in here. Sure hope they show up here and get it right. This is to great a ride to let something like that discourage someone from owning one.
  3. I have an 07 RSV with 4500 miles on it I have not gotten in to the carbs because I don't want to risk voiding my warranty. I have fattened the PMS 1/4- 1/2 each and synced carb's. She pulls good off the line but if you are at about 1/8-1/3 throttle and you stab it in any gear above 2nd it will not accl. it does not fall on its face just not accl. No lean popping at all if you stay in it you start to smell very rich exhaust. so I know its either getting too much fuel (my theory) or in efficient combustion. My dealer can not find the problem. tells me that's now a XVZ13 runs BS!!! I have had this bike since 0.4 miles and now my top speed on a flat is 85-90 MPH up a pass 70 MPH. I have had the speedo buried before. Changing fuel makes no difference. tonight I am going to try some seafoam but don't have much hope it that as a cure. Any suggestions on a good tech/dealer in Seattle area. I am more than able to find and fix this issue. but you see I turn wrenches all day long, 5 days a week. I bought a Bike with a 5 year warranty. I did not buy a HD for a reason. My dealer reset carbs and said #2 pilot was plugged and #1 almost plugged (why did not that effect the idle and how does that effect top end throttle) I guess I need to go get re trained in carbs 101. The dealer by the way is RMC Motorsports. But the saga continues my dealer tells me that Yamaha will not cover carb issues and charges me $345.00 to tell me that my pilots are plugged and that that is how they run. Needless to say I will be contacting Yamaha customer service. I have stepped down from the soap box now thank you all for coming to hear me
  4. I am in need of a backrest for my 86 VR No one by me has any at the dealer. Hope somone is parting out a bike with one I wouldnt mine buying it.
  5. Does anyone know where I can get the valve bucket tool to hold the buckets down so I can replace the shims. My dealer can't find a current part number for the tool. Thanks

    Carb Synk Question

I have stopped by 2 Yamaha Dealers to ask how much they charge to Synk the carbs. The first dealer says its a 30 minute job and will cost $20 TO $40. The second dealer says its a 1 1/2 hour job and will cost $80 to $120 and consist of fine tuning each carb and recommended they install a set of plugs while they have it there. I told them I put a new of plugs in it this spring along with K&N filters. He said the K&N's were a good thing but I definently needed to get the carbs synked since I did that. Am I missing something? Is this a detailed job or and easy job? I want to get it done but don't know who to trust. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

    Got Stalked.

Was at a Gander Mountain store near Kenosha, WI yesterday and when I was getting ready to leave a man his wife and their son came over to look at my Venture. He has recently bought a RSTD and had begun to ride again after several years of being off a bike. He has lots of questions and some issues with the new bike and his dealer (go figure) I was hoping he would have joined our group and been on the forum by now. I gave him the address and fed him full of BS about how nice you guys are so be nice if he shows up. Jerry
  8. yesterday. I have a Suzuki Boulevard cruiser, so the Venture is taking a little get use to, as to be expected. I have seen a few posts on here about Avon tires, do tires really make that big a difference in handling? Slow speed manuvering? By the way, love the bike. Can't wait to get home and wash it. The dealer did a lousy job cleaning it yesterday. Also, is there anything I should watch out for or be aware of related to the Venture?
  9. As some of you know, I was stranded in Erie, PA at the end of my summer vacation ride. My rear tire was showing cords and wasn't trustworthy to take the final 700 miles to home. This was Saturday night. That night and the next day, I tried to find a tire (MC or car tire) and someplace to install it. No luck. Searching on the internet, I found a local Yamaha dealer named Off-Road Express. They did not open until 9:00 on Monday morning, so we (my father was riding with us and stayed around) hunkered down with the remaining Jim Beam and cigars thru Sunday. Off-Road Express did not have an answering machine when I called trying to provide some forewarning of my plight. However, there was an email address on their website. I sent a note to them advising my being there at 9:00 Monday morning and needing some help. I arrived at the dealer at 9:00. Went in and talked with the Parts counter (Frank). They had the tire and gave me a discount (even though they had me by the short hairs). I then went to the Service Manager (Brian) and explained my trouble. He checked with the shop and they had my machine on the rack by 9:15. At 10:05, my bike was back in the parking lot. The technician - Garry (I think) - took the time to explain a couple of things he noticed when he took a short test ride. No rush, no pressure, just bikers getting a fellow traveler back on the road. While getting my riding gear back on, Joe Askins - Vice President came out and said, "You must be Jeff. I just read your email. Did you get taken care of?" When I advised that I had, he thanked me for the business and offered to have the bike cleaned off (it was nasty from about 3000 miles of bugs). I declined, but thanked him for the offer. Here's the kicker - $160 total out the door for a Dunlop 404 installed!!!! There shop was clean, professional, and had a great selection of accessories, fluids, and stuff. They also had an '07 Blue/Black RSV and a RSTD (didn't check the year). They carry Yamaha and Victory. This is a dealer I will recommend to anybody in - or travelling thru - the Erie area. 10. Hey guys, I just bought a home a couple weeks ago and spent two weeks moving to it. I rode my Venture a week ago yesterday to go show a storage building dealer how to get to my place with a new building. I parked the Venture and for the next 7 days worked like a dog moving. Guess what. SOMEWHERE....AT SOME TIME...in the last 7 days I must have dropped my keys. I called the Yamaha dealer and when he found out how old my Venture was....Im sure he fell to the floor screaming... AND YOU WANT WHAT??? Oh well, no help there. He said to take my ignition out and bring it to him but he doubts he can do anything with a bike that old. Second problem...that key works the saddle bags trunk and ignition but there was a second yamaha key on the ring that takes the gas cap off. Bummer. I have not ridden in a week one day and 8 hours and I am having withdrawls big time. This move broke my wallet big time so I need a cheap idea (yeah I know...now you guys are laying on the floor saying ..YOU WANT WHAT???). Well.... any ideas would be welcome. Terry the keyless:crying:
  11. So, I know this has been beaten into the ground over the years but it looks like my 99's rear shock with 55k on it is finally giving up the ghost. The last two days there has been a small puddle of oil under the shock. No, its the shock, not the vent tubes. Since the bike is way out of warranty I was wondering if there is a TSB from Yamaha on this issue. I have not heard of one before but I could have missed it. Also, has anyone here had any luck with convincing a dealer to give you a new shock for self install based on the history of failures. My next move is a Works shock but for now id take a stock shock if I can glean one from a dealer for free under warranty until I raise the needed cash for the Works. Any ideas????
  12. Looking for help. I have an 06 RSVM bought new last june. Bike has 14250 mi and is garage kept, and all scheduled services performed by dealer. Yesterday after work the bike wouldn't fire.. No Spark. Since I was on the 10th floor of a parking garage, I tried to bump start it all the way to the ground level.. Never got a hint of 'ignition'. So , got it towed to the Yamaha dealer.. I have a D3K on it, so today I took them my 'stock' module for them to try, and it made no difference. So what we have is, everything seems to be working fine, but no go! The dealer left me a phone message, to the effect, that they are scratching there heads and have a call into Mama Yamaha. Any input would be greatly appreceated!
  13. Does anyone know of some where to get the communitations headsets and acc. for the venture. Hopefully cheaper than from the dealer. I've got a '06 venture. Thanks, johnnyp
  14. and the dealer says its 3 weeks before he can look at it. Then if he thinks its covered under warranty he'll order one, and I'll have to make another 140 mile round trip to get it installed. When pressed about the time, he said that they are really busy with the holiday and all. (Is tomorrow a holiday that I've missed?) This throws a damper in the plans to take the bike on our vacation next week. And thats the dealer I bought it from! Don't ya just love 'em?
  15. WOW, that sound drives me NUTS! I bought a 2006 Venture about a month ago, and the noise is REALLY interfering with the pleasure riding usually brings. Sounds like standing in a swamp full of peeper frogs!!!!! A couple of questions, first, does anyone know of a good dealer to work with about the "I" basket replacement in my area? I live in Connecticut and the dealer I bought from is in Long Island. second, what recourse would I have if whatever dealer I choose doesn't offer the fix under warranty? I don't suffer fools gladly, I work too hard for my money to take any "we can't help you" bs. I absolutely LOVE the bike, but the noise is making me think of a Gold Wing or H-D Thanks, this is a VERY helpful and friendly forum. Marty S

    Just a few words...

Hi all, I have not been an active member of this group, but I have been impressed with your great sense of comradery and spirit. Proof of this is found in the tremendous activity and discussion on and off the board. I thank Freebird for his kindness during my ownership of the RSTD. I traded the RSTD today for a Road King Classic. The Yamaha is a great machine, and anyone who gets one will be fortunate although I never did fall in love with mine. FYI, I spoke with a dealer who told me that he had been selling leftover 07 RSTD's for 8995.00. Unfortunately, that did not help me sell my RSTD. Rebates are also liberal on the 08's as well. The dealer is J & J Motors in Massilon, Ohio. He may have one or two left. Finally, I read that Mean Dog's memorial will be held about 7 miles from my home. I hope to meet you on the 29th of June as I pay my respects to the memory of a very nice man. Best Wishes, Deerjunky
  17. Late last fall I bought an used 06 from a local dealer with about 10K miles on it. The dealer put new rubber on it and advised me that they had done a complete safety check as well. When I picked the bike up I did a respectable check out of it, not my usual detailed check. One of the things I usually do when I buy a used bike is pull the wheels and check everything myself. Since the dealer told me they had done a safety inspection and had the wheels off when they changed the rubber I did not do this. I have now put about 5K miles on this bike. Last week I completely lost the rear breaks. Come to find out that the inside shoe was so worn that it had started grinding the pistons and that it had broken in half. If this shoe had decided to flip it could have immediately locked the rear end up, needless to say it would not have been a fun ride. I was quite surprised to have a rear brake go out so early since the rear brake is the last thing I use to slow any bike down. Guess the previous owner had a different riding style. So what is my lesson learned here? No matter how great these bikes are never ever ever not do an inspection you would usually do yourself. Just because someone else told you they had done an inspection does not mean that it was the same one you would do, or done to the same standard you would do it. Also, do not become complacent just because this ride is so reliable. It is, after all, still a bike and it can reach out and bite you if you forget that.
  18. Check out this promotion buy a Missouri car dealer. http://www.worldnetdaily.com/index.php?fa=PAGE.view&pageId=64942 Forget free gasoline! Car buyers want free guns Dealer aims to please by providing $250 coupon for firearms
  19. Our local Yamaha dealer finally got a new venture on the showroom floor. We stopped yesterday and looked it over. It's gray ( not exactly my color ) but a very nice looking scoot. Normally he only stocked the goldwings as he is also a Honda and Suzuki dealer. Nice looking Hyabusa Suzuki setting beside it to. I'm still waiting on the 1800 V4 with FI.No plans for a new scoot until after I pay off some debt.
  20. My audio system has started acting up a bit. I've been getting some ignition noise through my headset on acceleration occaisionally and it seemed to be related to the mic input to my Zumo 550. When it happened I could wiggle the mike connectioin and it would change or go away. Today it began making the noise again and I unplugged the mic and the noise volume was reduced. I thought it was coming through the intercom circuit so I turned it off also and still had the noise. I'm not sure is this is related or not but I have been having a very infrequent problem with the audio control panel going dead in that the 3 buttons on the bottom will just not function for a period, generally less than 15 minutes. This has happened about 4 times in the last couple of months. The dealer has ordered a new control panel. It seems I read a post recently where someone had some warranty work done on their bike and one of the things done was wrapping the wiring with "RF tape". I've been searching for that post and haven't been able to locate it. Does anyone know if there is a service bulletin calling for that? I'll be talking with the dealer about it soon. DT
  21. After looking at several threads, I decided to go with the BUB'S. They are being installed "as we speak". If the weather holds I will be picking my bike up from the dealer later today. Did the 8000mi check up and let him put my new BUB'S on for me. Can't waite to hear it! Gene
  22. My local dealer is hosting a Bike Night on Saturday May31, 2008 from 6-8pm..I wanted to invite anyone here that lives in the Houston Area to come out and join in the fun. There will be food, a live band, prizes, and a bike show. The dealer is Tejasmotorsports in Highlands Texas, http://www.tejasmotorsports.com 347 S. Main Highlands Texas 77562.
  23. For those of you in and around the Southern California area who've been thinking about a new RSV, there's a local dearler here selling '07 RSV's for $14,999 out the door (That's tax, license, & registration included in the price). "Out-the-Door Motorsports" here in L.A. is a volume selling dealer whose prices cannot be beat here in this area. A year and a half ago I bought my "new" leftover '05 RSMV for $15,200 (otd) from a dealer up north about 175 miles from me and thought that was the deal of the century. That's probably what OTDMS would sell an '07 RSMV for here too. I should've of checked with them before I pulled the trigger on my deal, but at the time felt there was no way I could come close to the deal I got. I didn't lose much on the price, but it's the depreciation and resale value where I took the hit. At any rate, I'm extremely happy with my RSMV as it has turned out to be a better bike than I could have ever imagined.
  24. I'm picking up an 04 RSV and I want to put passing lights up front. I also want the "Harley tail light mod" in back that I have seen posted here here. ex..http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=3768 Can anyone reccomend a dealer or mechanic in the area Aurora Illinois who can do that? I know any dealer can do the factory lights, but some guys might not want to do the Harley Lights. Also, can anyone reccomend some specific brand / model of REALLY bright bulbs to use? I really want to see and be seen at night. Thanks
  25. I need some feedback here. As some of you may know, I recently purchased a brand new '06 RSTD. This bike had 0 KM on it, and has the full 5 year warranty. I bought it on Thurs, and took delivery yesterday. During the dealer walk around, one of the things he showed me was the gas cap, and how to take it off etc. (Bike has no owners manual, it is ordered and coming) Anyways, when he took off the gas cap, I noticed quite a bit of rust in the filler neck, and upon further inspection, there are spots of rust on the piece INSIDE the tank as well. I commented on this, but the dealer said it was ok, not to worry it was bare metal, almost all of them have rust etc. I don't know if it was the anticipation of the first ride or a temporary brain fart, but I did not question it further. I have put about 170 KM on it so far, and looked inside the tank again, and it is bothering me more. I took some pics, and will post here later. Any first impressions? Should a new bike have any rust? What is he talking about it being "bare metal" This is my first new bike, and first Yamaha. What kind of complications could a rusty tank cause me? Any help would be appreciated. Sonny Sonny
