Assuming your comprssion readings are accurate, you probably should check valve Clearance adjustment. This might be causing the low compression readings. You will need a New set of gaskets for the Valve Covers.

Mistake buying a Venture?
GeorgeS replied to Trainwreck68's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
???? OK, we all know that most of the problems on these new bikes for over 5 years, have been known about by the Dealers, and Service Reps !!! So !! Why don't they just fix the known problems " BEFORE " they sell the bikes !!! Why, do they insist on torqing off folks who are their Bread and Butter ??? Any Dealer type folks out there can answer this ? -
If they give you a new switch, try to keep the old one. Sombody made a posting couple weeks ago, with photo's showing how to Dissassemble the old switch and Repair it. If your interested in giveing it a try, and haveing a spare.

Front fork rebuild questions
GeorgeS replied to Tupperj's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Don't sound right, even with OLD worn out springs. How many Miles on them ?? Usually 50K is about the lifetime limit for OEM springs. Bye chance did they put 5 WGT Oil in there ?? Not good, should be 10 stock. I am running 15 Wgt. with new progressive, and Fine With -- NO -- air pressure. Easy to Pop In the New Set of progressive Springs, and change to 15 Wgt. Oil. -
Is it possible to tow one bike with another?
GeorgeS replied to Dragonslayer's topic in Trailer Talk
Call every one of the Rental companies, close to your pick up point. Sometimes you can get a deal if they have extra vehicals that need to go back to a certain section of the country. I remember hearing about this, in the past, not sure of any details.- 32 replies

The Sensor is simply a Battery Fluid Level Sensor. If water is above the plates, the light should be off. The One wire--- ( W/R ) --- from sensor goes to a pull apart connection about 8 inches from the battery, in the wireing harness, just forward of the battery. Find this connector ( a single wire connector ) it might have been pulled loose. Opposit side of connector is also W/R The wire, ( one only ) runs directly to the Instrument panel. There is NO other ground wire Involved. Double check, the Fluid Level in your battery, plug in the plug, put sensor in battery, and you should be good to go. IF water Low, remember, only use Distilled Water.

help with final drive question
GeorgeS replied to dynodon's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Always sombody on E-Bay parting out, 83, and 84, there is an 86 to 93, being parted out, being listed this week. -
I opened up the unit, the Piston is Free to move up and down, The Valves are not plugged. I Cleaned the contacts on the Switch, Ohmed out the Switch connections, They are OK. I have the Entire Pump circuit powered thru a Seperate New Fuse. As soon ( immediatly ) upon plugging it in, the Fuse Blows. ( other pump works just fine ) So, it appears as if the Magnetic coil that pulls the Plunger " UP " is shorted out. ??? I guess my big question here, is WHY , was the bike running OK, when I removed the pump 2 years ago ?? I was wondering yesterday, is it possible for these things to Run, by " Siphon " feeding if the pump fails. ?? Or, maby with the Tank Nearly full, the fuel would be " High " enough to " Gravity Feed " untill the fuel in the tank was below the level of the Carburators. ???? Hmmmm. OK, So, IF, that were true, and your Pump Fails, then presumably you could be driveing around with a Bad Pump, and not be aware of this untill you lost the " Siphon" feed If you burned the fuel down to low in the tank ??? I know, this is all Nonsence, and Speculation, but things like this bother me--- Oh well, I got a new spare pump on E-Bay yesterday,

OK, deffinatly remove, the TCI, Remove cover, dry in oven at 110 deg. F. and Resolder the Connectors from both Plugs to the Circuit Board. Use 10 or 15 Watt Pen iron. Rosin Core Solder. As soon as you get the TCI out. Do the Resistance Check " From " the 8 Pin Plug you pulled out of the TCI. Remove the + cable, Read Resistance from the loose end of Cable, " TO " the 4 , Center Pins of the 8 Pin Plug. --- You should see 3.8 to about 4.2 OHMs on lowest Resistance Scale of meter. If Higher ( some have found as high as 28 OHMS ) then you have excessive DC Resistance, at the following points. 1. Run Stop Switch 2. 15 Amp Ing Fuse holder. ( maby cold solder joint at fuse holder ) 3. Ignition Switch, " On- Off " contacts 4. Across the 40 Amp Main Fuse, Element Contacts. ( two screws here may be loose inside of the Fuse holder unit. --- IF, only one of the 4 Resistance readings, IS HIGH, then might be a bad Ignition Coil. ---Also, down line from this R/W wire voltage circuit, Is the Fuel Pump, and Fuel Pump Control Relay. And the Main Voltage Feed to the TCI Circuit Board. SO, if you have excessive Resistance in the , Main 40 amp fuse, the On-Off Switch, or the 15 Amp ing fuse, or the Run- Stop, Switch, you will have " LOW VOLTAGE" -- TO -- , ALL, of the here mentioned items. This " Lowered Voltage " will be determined by the Amount of EXCESS , Series, In Line Resistance, across the Switches, or Fuse holders. Note: AtlantaDragonSlayer, Found, a total of 28 Ohms, of Excessive Resistance thru his switches, and 15 amp fuse, and , 40 Amp Main fuse, on his 83. This left about 4 Volts DC to power all the above items, Obviously, the Engine would not Run. Checking all this, may not solve your problem, however its good maintenance, for the Old bike, especially in a humid climate. Good luck,

Help-Oil Around Left Side Carbs
GeorgeS replied to jryan's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Do the Exhaust Heat test. Start Bike, Cold, and check if all 4 pipes heat up at the same rate. ( carefull not to burn your hand ) If one stays cool, probably a bad coil. I'm not sure if a bad coil as he said would cause your problem, however Ignition Coils do Fail on these bikes. Not Uncommon. Also, you can be running on 3 cylinders on these V-4's and they can seem to be running just fine. -
Front fork rebuild questions
GeorgeS replied to Tupperj's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
IF, you decide to completly replace the Fork assembly. Be sure to replace the Steering head bearings as long as its all apart. If bike is over 50K, good time to do this. As to the Progressive springs !! Deffinatly use those !! You will find that with those springs installed, you can run 15Wgt fork Oil, and NO air pressure. Ride will be great. Also, install the " SuperBrace " After you complete all this work you will find your bike drives MUCH Better, then with the Stock front end. -

Help-Oil Around Left Side Carbs
GeorgeS replied to jryan's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Did you check, with bike sitting level, oil no higher then 1/2 between the two marks on the sight gauge. ? Also, do you know what wgt. of oil the previous owner had in the crankcase? Maby a heavier Wgt oil would help the situation. I always have some blow by on my 89, but never considered it a problem. -
A New set of 4 Cables, OEM price is about $35.00. Get a new set, used off E-Bay would probably be at least $20, just get new one. You have Cruz control, you have 4 sections of cable. The 83 84 bikes that DO NOT have Cruz control, only have 2 cables, and they are longer, will not fit your bike if you have cruz control.

About 2 years ago, I installed a used fuel pump I bought on E-Bay. It worked just fine, so I left it installed on the 89. Was at about 47K at the time. So: Today, after carrying the original around in the Bags as a spare, I decided to re-install the original pump. ( Just to make sure it was working ) Wa La !!! Fuse Blew !!! It don't work. Opened it up, Pressure Switch OK, Pump section OK ( the bottom part ) . But found Low Resistance thru the Main Coil. About 1.3 ohms. The good one reads about 2.5 ohms ???? Totally at a loss to explain this, as the darn thing was working just fine 2 years ago when I removed it, and wrapped it up in a bag to carry as a spare. ???

HELP>..RSTD Fuel smell
GeorgeS replied to drumfire's topic in Royal Star and Royal Star Tour Deluxe Tech Talk
In addition to all the other items mentioned, ----- I would pull the Vent Line from the tank, and make sure its open. Also on the 1st Gens where the line hooks to the tank, about 1/4 inch I.D. hose. There is a brass plug mounted and it has a Very Small hole in it. This small hole IS the Vent. This could Eaisly be pluged, causing pressure build up in tank. However this should not happen when engine is running. ----- Also, the Vent Hose's, ( 4 Each ) from top of carbs running down to below the frame, make sure they are not Plugged. Not sure if this could be the problem, as this would cause engine preformance problems. But, worth checking. I have heard reports of the ends of these hose's getting plugged with road Tar , etc. -----Have you checked the crankcase Vent Lines running up to the Air Filter Box ? Are they In Place, and clamps in good condition ? ------- Idea: Just a thought--- Maby worth checking. Carefully Inspect the Fuel Pump Itself, It has some rubber gaskets, and 6 bolts holding the bottom plate section on to the lower section of the pump. This gasket , might be leaking under pressure. Also, the Lower Section of the pump is made from a PVC type material. Maby a crack in this part of pump. Also, the Ports on the pump itself, where the Input and output hoses connect, could be cracked. ------ Also, double check the Hose " from " the petcock to the filter, and filter to Fuel Pump. Are the Hose clamps all In place and tight ??? Carefully check the Petcock rubber gasket where it mounts to the tank. Maby a bad gasket here, ----- Have you checked the Fuel hose from the Pump going to the main feed point on top of the carbs. Maby defective hose, or may have been damaged. Maby bad hose clamps, or they might be loose. -----Have you carefull checked the Hoses ON TOP of the Carb Bank, from the main feed point hose, then the hose going to Each of the 4 carbs. Maby cracked, rotted, hose, or loose hose clamps. If this were the case, they might ONLY be leaking when the pump is applying pressure. This small amount of fuel would be vaporizing causing the smell. But when stopped, not enough to show up as a liquid leak. After checking everything Freebird said to check, and hoses, if nothing is found, then I would suspect One of the Carburator Bodies itself. Maby a Seaping Gasket on one of the Carbs. In this case you would have to remove the entire Carburator bank, and do a carefull inpection for leaking. Maby feed the entire Bank of 4 with a long piece of hose from the fuel pump, run pump and see what happens. ------- One more item, to check, ---- A Long shot, ---- however, the Carb Bowls, each one has a drain valve. ( #2 phillips head Screw ) and a drain hose comeing from the bottom of the bowl. I'm not sure but this Screw might have an O-Ring seal of some type, which might not be sealing. This might be causing seapage out of the drain hose. Or, maby one of the Drain Screw Valves, is just Not Closed tight enough. Find these Screws , one on each carb, make sure they are closed. Good luck- 18 replies
