  1. Well, bought the new 08 RSTD. Took off for Los Angeles, the seat was Wonderfull!! untill about 3 PM on the Second day of the trip. ( about 750 miles ) At that point I realized that the seat will have to be replaced. And in most case's the stock seat on ANY, new bike for the Average Rider, is going to be a piece of junk !! After 10 days, " On the Road ", and about 2 weeks later, my rear was still hurting !! So Much, for the seat that felt wonderfull for the First 750 Miles !!! ie: Go see, the " Russell Day Long " folks, or the " Corbin " folks . And even after all that you might still be doing modifications to your seat, --------- :stirthepot:
  2. Pull out the Rectifyer/Regulator Unit, Remove the Large Plug, and Inspect the make and female pins. I think your plug has been getting wet, from road wash, and you might have to replace, or re-build the Plug. I know of at least 2 guys had to do this on 99, 2nd gens. And the R/R unit itself may now be damaged, if that plug has gone south.
  3. Get it fixed !! Pronto, this condition is Extremely Dangerous!!!!!!!!!! Torque on the Steering head Nut, needs to be adjusted !!! I personally know folks who have gone down on various bikes because of this situation. ( My father in law, for one, )
  4. Will get to it, I have to go to the bank now and deposit the money !!!! :cool10: And of course, order some " new stuff " !!! for the " New Bike !! " :stirthepot:
  5. Thanks, I thought that was the one, but never hurts to " Ask " and make sure !!!
  6. Yup, Seattle-Hood --- Just up the street !!
  7. OK, I'm ordering a new E3 for the Rear on the 08 RSTD.( MV85B-15 ) As to installing a Narrower, front tire to replace the OEM Bridgestone ?? ( The 150/80 - 16H OEM now installed ) Dunlop is showing Front size, 150/80-16, and MT90B16H sizes for E3 type. OK question, is for installing a Narrower Tire on the front, what is the preferred Brand, and Size to order. ( Not the cheap tires !! ) Is the MT90B16H the one to order ??? Or do I have to get a Michelen, or Avon for the front, in order to have the narrower tire up front for Improved Handleing ???
  8. The 89 is " Sold " as of yesterday.
  9. Since bike was new, ( now 5200 mi on it ) only ride single. About 2800 miles just rideing around local highways. And the Trip Seattle to Los Angeles and back. Lots of Twisties, on the trip. Or, cruzeing I-5, mostly at about 65 MPH. Carrying about 75 lb. of luggage, tools, water etc etc. Close inspection yesterday indicates, that the tire will be down to the wear Bars, by about 7500 miles. I think it would be " bald " before it makes 10,000 miles. My brother in law, bought new Harley 2 years ago, and same thing with the OEM Dunlop D404 Series rear. It was Bald, in about 7,000 miles !!! ( Double rideing with a trip LAX to Sturgis and back ) . I guess my point is, " Don't Buy the Cheapest Tires " No matter which manufacture !!! You get what you pay for, as they say . Now, to be fair to a Dunlop D404 Series tire, I put them on my son's Honda CX-500, and they last about 15K !! A Fine tire for that bike ---- But not a heavy 800 lb , Two Up, Fully loaded touring bike !!! But, this has all been discussed on this web site before, So, the sun is out in Seattle, and I'm going for a ride !!! ( Will order a new E-3 Radial Tomorrow !!! ) Ride Safe, Everybody !!!
  10. How many miles is on this wheel with the bad bearings ???
  11. OK, will try to make it down there, only a hop , skip, and jump as they say. Well, if you have had 10 of them, they must be pretty darn good seats !!! I don't care to much what they look like, its how they feel, after 3 days on the road, my rear really hurt !! And after 2 weeks at home it still hurts !!! Funny, the first two days on the road it was good, but around day 5, Darn, Not good !!! Also, will be ordering a new E-3 this week, that Bridgestone, ain't going to make much more then another 3,000 miles at best !! Absolute Junk !!!
  12. Sounds good, do you know how much ??
  13. OK, first round trip SEA to LAX went great on the new bike. Love this bike !!! Comfortable !! except for the Seat. ( darn ) Guess I will be spending a few bucks on a " Day Long Saddle " in the near future. Plenty of power, and the brakes seem to be better then on the 89. Not sure why?? If anybody wants a new RSTD, there are a few 08's and 09's left in dealer stock, around the country. But you will have to do some searching !! I found 2 in Washington, and one in Oregon. ( 2 months ago ) ( Only one left in WA. now ) Been working on the 89 getting it ready to sell. Posted it today in VR Classified. Will wait a few days before advertiseing it locally if anybody here is interested. Its ready to travel, fly to SEA, bring money, will pick u up at airport, and have you on the road in a Jiffy !! ( as they say )
  14. Dunlop E-3, I have gotten 20K on and E-2 and then an E-3. I ride Single, no trailer, My new 08 RSTD, has the Bridgestone OEM, at 4900 miles, its allready half worn out !!!! I will be ordering a new E-3, and figure on changing it maby next month. Boy, that Bridgestone OEM is a piece of crap !!!
  15. Give both brake light switches a dose of electrical contact cleaner. Might be adjust ment for the foot brake light switch, check the linkage to the switch.
  16. Keep at least 1/2 can of Sea-Foam per tank for about 3 tanks of fuel, and run it hard !! in 3rd and 4th gear. Also, open drain on each carb, and key to on, make sure fuel pump is pumping fuel thru each carb, one at a time. Next time you have tank run close to empty, good idea to completly drain your fuel tank !! Make sure not water in the tank, then start over with new fuel !!
  17. On 1st gen, Remove air cleaner box, and remove the battery box. You then have fair access to the coils. Its not necessary to remove the fairings. Also, good time to remove the TCI, if you have not as yet done so, and dry out the moisture from inside the TCI, and resolder the connectors to the circuit board inside the TCI. Be sure to clean the pins on the TCI.
  18. Well I just pull over, let them go bye, and Usually they just start tail gating the next car in line !!! Its not worth getting into an argument, or confrontation with them. As this could lead to an " Ugly Situation " I have had that happen in the past. Best, to just pull over, or take a right turn, or do whatever you can to simply remove yourself from the situation. Remember, on a motorcycle, YOU, are nothing more then a " Target" !!! and Easy Pickens !!! Go Away, and stay alive !!!! Anyway, thats my 2 Cents worth, on the problem. One more comment, on Tail Gaters, over the years I have noticed, that most of them, are young females, between 18 to about 30 years old. Hmmmm??? why?? Don't know. ( just an observation )
  19. The 1st gen may actually be lighter in weight. However, haveing just bought an 08 RSTD, which is heavier then my old 89 1st gen. My impression is that the new one is eaiser to handle in and out of the garage, and parking space's. I will attribute this to the fact that the weight is destributed lower on the entire bike. ie: a lower center of gravity. It really does make a difference ! So my comment to your question is, yes the 2nd gen is heavier, but feels lighter !! Also, I will say, its a much better handling bike on the road, in all respects. And I make these comments after rideing a 1st gen for 19 years. Frankly, I love the new 08, its comfortable, handles great ( and supposedly better after the front tire is replaced with a smaller width tire ) drives like a dream, and the brakes are also better. (( I know, I have stirred up a hornets nest here, { Sorry ! " )) :whistling:
  20. Well the gear " Whining " is louder on the new 08 then on my old 89. That is for sure. Very noticable around town at lower speeds. But once on the highway's the noise is pretty well completly covered by wind, and road noise. So not really a problem.
  21. The new fender rack arrived, it was still in the original package, and sealed up. The package was dirty indicating it had spent many years sitting on a self somplace. Anyway, after pealing off all the packageing the unit was in perfect condition. Got it mounted and looks good. So I am a happy camper as they say. I would be interested to know if anybody manages to find the other 3 racks that are supposedly on a dealer shelf somplace ?
  22. So, what was wrong with the charging system ?? ( We need to know !! )
  23. Well, drain out the expensive stuff, and put in some Castrol, plain , old " Castrol 15W-40W " and see what happens. ( or 20W-50W , its summer time )
  24. Maby sombody has re-routed, some of the fuel lines, or moved the fuel filter, and run some of these components to close to an exhaust pipe. Just a wild guess. Some of these bikes, has had aftermarket fuel pumps, and filters installed. Maby poor judgement in positioning one of the components.
  25. This is a good reason to Install an " accurate " Voltmeter to all the Venture models. With all the history of Charging system problems with these bikes. An accurate Meter will warn you well in advance that your Alternator , or R/R unit, or wireing are developing problems. !! Once the voltage starts dropping below 13.6 Volts, watch it, you have about 5 to 10K miles before real trouble starts. The gauge on teh 1st gens is NOT, accurate enough to monitor the situation. I will be installing an aftermarket, DIGITAL, voltmeter on my new 08 RSTD. I'm allready looking for one. ( Not, an Auto Voltmeter ) They are not accurate enough.
