Just found this listing. Can anyone with them already installed tell me if this is a good deal or not? http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Yamaha-Royal-Star-Venture-Driving-Light-Kit-_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQhashZitem3cb85b9039QQitemZ260791046201QQptZMotorcyclesQ5fPartsQ5fAccessories

Just got an early Fathers Day gift from the wife - a card with a picture of highway lights for my '99 RSV. But where she tried to order them from told her they would be back-ordered for quite some time, so I got a nice IOU from her instead of the lights. She cancelled the order and I told her I would shop around for the best deal and most readily available kit. Any suggestions? I'm already scanning eBay. Thanks!

Initial set of ME880's went 18K both front and rear, second set on now with about 13K and still lots of good tread and nowhere near the wear bars. Love em on the RSV. On the Softail, we go with the E3's and got about 14K on the rear (which I just replaced) and have 16K on the front and getting ready to replace.

Westboro Baptist gets a dose of medicine

Just found out that the WBC scum have announced that they will be staging 3 protests in the Nashville area on Monday the 13th - - one at an area synagog at 11:25, then at an Islamic Center at 12:30, and finally at the memorial service for Marine Sgt. Kevin Balduf at 2:15. Sgt. Balduf was killed in action in A-Stan on May 12, and his cremated remains will be interred at ANC later next week. Would be nice to shout em down and shut em down with a raft of American flags on Monday, but work prevents me from making the 4 hour ride up there. If any of you guys more local to Nashville want to be there, here's the scoop as I understand it: Gordon Jewish Community Center in Nashville, TN June 13, 2011 11:15 AM - 11:45 AM Islamic Center of Nashville in Nashville, TN June 13, 2011 12:30 PM - 1:00 PM Woodmont Hills Church in Nashville, TN June 13, 2011 2:15 PM - 3:00 PM FYI, I have not verified whether they have secured the required protest permits or not, and I do not have addresses for these 3 locations. But they have these protests listed on their vile web site. I would love to see about 1,000 people kick a little WBC ass on Monday! -
My nephew Colin in Seattle is filming a documentary beginning later this month that looks really interesting. Here's the link to the project: http://coffeeracerproject.com/ He will be departing Seattle on or about June 18th, and will be riding through WA, OR, CA, NV, AZ, NM, CO, UT, WY, ID, and then back through to Seattle. I along with many other supporters will be monitoring his trip on-line as he rides through these states and meets and talks to hundreds of regular Americans about "exploring the notion of choosing between pursuing our dreams and being present in our realities. Do we have to? Can we keep the magic of adventure and discovery alive while simultaneously being productive and responsible? What is it to grow up?" I love the fact that he is pursuing his dream of making this film, and that he is doing it on a bike. OK, so it's a Kawi KLR650 and not an RSV. But it's still a bike! Anyway, he asked me if I could recommend any really unique highways and byways through these states that he should consider including on the 3 week trip route. So if you know of any, please let me know and I'll pass it on to him. (And if you want to be a part of this unique adventure and help him reach his goal so he can be fully funded, visit the above web site and feel free to help him out.) Thanks!

Chain lube....hmmmm....haven't thought of that. I'll give it a try. And FYI, DOT 5.1 wasn't around in '96, but it withstands heat much better than its predecessors and is approved for the RSV. Just sayin....- 15 replies

Temperatures be dammed, my wife dresses for the fall, not for the ride - - heavy black boots, jeans, black chaps, leather jacket, full face helmet, leather gauntlet gloves and heavy wool protective neck gator. Just kidding. Here's how she really rides in the heat of summer. Ain't no way I'm going to change her mind either. I've tried. (and yes, she did put the boots back on before we left the hotel!)

Hard To Find engine chrome
Bobby G replied to rrbarrick's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Here's what I've added so far (admittedly not much): ~ chrome ignition cover (plastic) ~ chrome trunk rack and saddle bag rails ~ chrome oil fill plug ~ chrome tail light cover ~ chrome-trimmed LED tail and brake light bar (Diamond-R) Really, that's about it. All add-on's were readily available either on eBay, Motorsportssupercenter.com, Wingstuff.com, or Craigslist. Or the Yamaha factory accessories site. -
How do I lube my clutch handle?
Bobby G replied to Red Rider's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Mine was exactly the same way on the brake side a few weeks ago, so we hit it with a little carb cleaner and some WD-40 as stated above, and tightened it all up and now it brakes very smooth. No more "notching". But if the fluids in the reserve windows look anything less than clear, it would be best to speed bleed them and replace with some new DOT 5.1.- 15 replies

Not possible, not on regular roads anyway. If he rode 24 hours a day, he'd have to average 62.5 mph to make it. Riding 20 hours a day, and getting only 4 hours of sleep a day, he'd have to AVERAGE 75 mph to make it, and that average includes fuel and pee stops. On a closed course, I might be more inclined to believe that this could be done, like LeMans. But not on any semblance of regular roads or even wide open interstates. BTW, how did he break his wrist? I could imagine that he did it beating his hand on his helmet to try to stay awake!

My fuel guage has always baffled me. When it gets to the last bar on the meter, it will flip to another guage that begins an upward count of miles ridden, up to about 15, at which point the engine will begin to sputter and I need to flip to the reserve tank. But when I fill the tank sometime in the next 10 or 20 miles, it usually always still takes less than 5 gallons. I just assume that for whatever reason, my '99 has a 1+ gal. reserve, and not the .8 gal. reserve the specs say it has. Strange.

I started this very interesting thread by noting that I did 14 hours and 600+ miles in one sitting, and it about did me in. Personally speaking, after reading some of your posts and the rides that some of you have done, I think y'all are NUTS!

I rode from Atlanta to DC last Thursday straight through, with only 1 long (1 1/2 hour) stop, other than gas and restroom stops. Just about did me in. 681 miles in just under 14 hours. Made me wonder what the record is for a continuous ride with only periodic breaks for gas, food, restroom, etc. Anybody know? How long was your longest ride in hours and miles?

Got safely home last night around 6pm after staying the night in Roanoke after the ride was over. Just an overwhelming and humbling experience to have made this trip to honor our Heroes and Veterans. Did just about everything I'd hoped to do while up there, including visiting The Wall and a few other monuments, and spending several hours walking Arlington National Cemetery to visit some of Georgia's finest who are buried there. Also witnessed the changing of the guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, and the burial place of JFK. Those scenes will literally take your breath away. I also visited all of the vendors on Thunder Ally and got some awesome pins and patches. The RSV performed great all the way, including the Iron Butt ride on Thursday - - left Marietta GA at 0600 and arrived in Fairfax VA at 8pm. 681 miles - - my longest single day ride ever. I even beat several storm fronts that were moving in my direction pretty much all day Thursday. What a ride! Total ride by the time I got home last night was 1,556 miles. Met a few Venture riders there from CT and VA, but not too many were to be found. The H-D Ultra Classic was the dominate bike there by a long shot. But at least I didn't overheat like a few of them did! LOL! Time to clean the scoot. It's about as disgustingly filthy as it's ever been..... Check out some of my pics in the Picture Folder forum.

accesory outlet fuse?? Where is it
Bobby G replied to muaymendez1's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
They put it there because the same idiot in Japan who designed the clutch probably designed the placement of the fuse locations! If I ever meet him, I'm gonna slap the stupid out of him. -
Yes, he can explain it, and no, there is no fix. It is the angle of the cuts in the splines/teeth and the way they mesh that make the whiny noise. But rather than try to paraphrase him, I'll have him email me the technical explanation and I'll cut and paste it here for everyone. Like him and everyone else, I find it very hard to imagine why Yamaha would stick to such a production plan like this if they knew how annoying it is to owners, unless there is someone in Japan who is just convinced that this clutch design is better than all other options, regardless of the resulting noise it makes. Stay tuned......
-
I think that I'm on safe ground here when I tell you that your dealer has no idea what he's talking about. It IS the clutch making the whine. It's been known by Yamaha and their dealers for years. The PO I bought my RSV from (original owner) is a retired Yami engineer, and is more familiar with the RSV then anyone I know, and can attest to the engineering attributes of the clutch in how it generates the unique and annoying noise. If the rear end of your bike is making a similar sound, then by all means it needs to be looked at. But when you get it serviced, don't be disappointed when the famous RSV whine is still there. And you're getting better mileage at a higher RPM in a lower gear? Hmmmmmm...... Very hilly on your commute, or is it relatively flat? Just curious.

My 2-bike policy with Progressive is up for renewal on May 29. The annual cost is $917! I sent my coverages to Allstate (with whom I have my house and cars), and they came back with a total cost of $429, with a lower deductible. Needless to say, I'm switching. Allstate used to be so expensive, but my agent tells me they have totally revamped their underwriting guidelines for motorcycles and are far more competitive now. I'll say! And, I just got my Allstate Good Driver rebate in the mail yesterday - - $102.24! Time for a little accessories shopping!!

another I basket question
Bobby G replied to david Taylor's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
I'm told you need a special tool to do this. Check the Tech Library for the threads on this. -
I used WD-40 when I first had that happen, but then it happened again. So I put a thin coating of some Motorkote I had in the garage on the key and slid it in and out several times, also turning the ignition on and off several times, and that cured my similar problem. That stuff is a hyper-lubricant and adheres to metal surfaces for a very long time without breaking down. WD-40 is good for immediate results, but I guess will wear down faster. Glad you got it fixed!
