  1. A buddy of mine in Bowie TX will be in the market for a good used touring bike in about a month from now. He has a 3 hour ride to his corporate office in Mt. Pleasant TX (usually goes out on Monday and returns home on Thursday), and wants to start riding instead of spending monster money on gas with the big a$$ truck every week. So you guys in that area, keep your eye out for some possible referrals I can send his way in February in the under-$5,000 range. He's not sure he's ready for an RSV, but something in the VTX 1300/Kawi Vulcan/Suzuki Boulevard size and amenity range is more what he's looking for. Harley is OK too, but he's thinking liquid cooled. Clean, lower mileage, no maintenance issues, hard bags a plus, windshield/fairing, no specific color in mind. You get the idea. He hasn't ridden in awhile, and will be taking a MSF course, but really doesn't know what's out there. I'll touch base back in early Feb with this, or drop me a PM if you see something that might fit the bill that I can pass on to him. Personal referrals from reliable bikers (that would be you guys!) are always better then not knowing the bike's history. Thanks!
  2. I agree....adjusted the throttle and clutch cables before I left for DC last May, and the problem went away. Prior to that, it was doing the same thing as yours.
  3. No team that "backed in" to the playoffs will win this weekend. The Bungles will do their usual fold act, and Denver's run as the NFL PR department's Dream Team of 2011 is about as bad a playoff team as it gets. The Steelers and Texans will roll. I like the run the Saints are on, and they are about unbeatable at home, but the Lions are certainly peaking, at least on offense. Both are dome teams, and this one will be another shootout, and maybe a few records will fall, but I'll take the Saints. And I like the Giants in cold weather against a dome team, so my hometown Falcons will have to wait till next year - again. Round 2: Texans at Ravens - - Ravens Steelers at Pats - - Steelers in an upset Saints at Niners - - Saints Giants at Packers - - Packers
  4. New on the shelf at my local Wal-Mart, right next to the Seafoam, is what looks like a new product from STP. Even the can is a Seafoam knock-off! The verbiage on the can reads just like Seafoam, too. Anyone see this yet? It may have been out for awhile, but I just noticed it last week. It was on sale for about $1.50 less than SF, so I picked up a few cans to try out. I guess it supports the adage "if you can't beat em, join em"!
  5. Back to the original question (from '06 I think!), for what it's worth, I had my AIS plugged for about a year, and found that the bike's performance suffered some in terms of both gas mileage and that very irritating "popping" from the exhaust. It really was pretty bad. I took the plugs off back in September, and now think that the bike is running better than ever. I still want to get the carbs synched sometime soon, but otherwise, it's running great with the AIS unplugged.
  6. Thanks for the pics, but drilling isn't an option, so I'll keep looking.
  7. Pictures and the contact info for Dennis Kirk would be very helpful. Thanks!
  8. I'm thinking of ordering this leather bag trio for the RSV. Anyone with a windshield bag have any suggestions on this and whether it will work? http://carolinaleatherworks.stores.yahoo.net/winbag721.html
  9. Got a much needed Nordic Track treadmill for my office so I can get my fat self out of the chair and get in some serious walking during the day while I'm on the phone (which occupies 70% of my time anyway). Also got a really nice Kodak Sport weatherproof, submersible video camera that I can mount on the bike or take snorkeling. Ordered the mount today, along with a 16 gig media card. Will be recording lots of rides now! The best gift was having all of the kids, grandkids, spouses, nieces and nephews in the area be able to be together on Christmas day. It was glorious!
  10. Cool follow up to this - - I was at Target yesterday, and a guy stopped me as I got out of the truck (yes, my wife lets me drive it now and then!) and asked me where I got these "awesome looking tires", and what brand they were, etc. I had to laugh, as I really never paid much attention to how different they looked versus the other brand. But they really do have a very aggressive look to them, and certainly fill up the wheel well and rims more than the other ones did. I guess some things about a vehicle stand out to some folks more than others. And yes, I did notice a 'Vet with Nitto's the other day too.
  11. No plans to do any off-road stuff with this vehicle. It's my wife's daily driver, and is a 2-wheel drive. She took it to Nashville and back yesterday, mostly in the rain, and said she felt very safe and not much road noise at all, although she says it drives more like a truck now. As long as momma's happy, that's all that matters!
  12. The '99 RSV is always overstated by 5mph on the speedo. I just compensate. The wife's '03 softail is spot on. No variation between actual speed and what shows on the speedo.
  13. I got a major headache just reading all the stuff you are doing on this thing. I can't change out the windshield without screwing something up! LOL!
  14. Had to replace the wife's tires on her '05 F-150, and we ended up going with Nitto's instead of one of the other better known brands. I did a lot of research on them, and they rated out even better than Michelin's for light duty trucks, and were $300 less expensive. They are very quiet on the road and have a 65,000 mile treadwear rating. Anyone have any experience with this brand? http://www.nittotire.com/
  15. Mine wants a new air horn, vented wind screen and new mirrors. Letter sent to Santa last night!
  16. Easy fix - - if you really believe that the crown in the road is affecting tire wear, start alternating which lane you ride in by the hour, day, week or month. Get your front end checked out for possible mis-alignment or fork damage that might be so slight as to not be readily seen. And finally, put some really good tires on that puppy - - Metzler 880's! (Rut row, now I've done it - - let the ME880 bashing begin!) LOL!

Just bought 4 cans on Saturday at Wal-Mart in Marietta for $7.99 a can. Have only seen it cheaper once at Advance Auto Parts, $6.99 a can. Normally it's about $10. I also use Sta-bil for winter storage of the lawn equipment, but I'll give that other stuff a try. Don't need it for the RSV - - I normally ride all winter.
  18. WOW! What a gorgeous weekend of riding in the mountains of GA, NC and TN. Maybe missed "peak" leaf peeping by 1 week, but it was still drop dead beautiful. And no heated gear needed. Our route Saturday took us north through Blue Ridge, Murphy NC (with a stop at Cherokee County Cycles for some requisite shopping!), Cherokee NC and on through the Great Smoky Mountains National Park to Gatlinburg. Stayed the night at a Best Western that had a nice view of the downtown area, a sitting room with a fireplace and a hot tub! (Need I say more?) After some pancakes and boot shopping in Pigeon Forge, on the return trip Sunday we cut across Little River Rd. to the Foothills Parkway, down the Dragon to Deals Gap (318 turns in 11 miles!) and Robbinsville, west over the Cherohala Skyway to Tellico Plains, then south on Rt. 68 back to Blue Ridge and home. About 400 miles total, and not one minute of trouble or problems - until we got home and found our whole house filled with gas leaking from the furnace and water heater. Called out the gas company and had to have it shut off until we can get the HVAC guy in today. Valve seals have gone bad in several places and we've probably been inhaling gas for weeks without even knowing it. More dead brain cells! I can honestly say that I could do the Cherohala over and over, it is that beautiful a ride. At peak elevation it's about 5,300 feet (Huckleberry NC), and in total it's about 40 miles in length. A very leisurely 2 hours, and virtually no traffic to speak of. I'll take it over the Dragon any day. Another great road to try if you get up that way is Rt. 28 out of Deals Gap southeast down to Tuskeegee NC. "Hellbender 28". So many roads - - so little time!
  19. Thanks guys. We're just running the gloves and maybe one vest, but I don't think it will be cold enough to need it. But I will turn off the highway lights while we have the Gerbins on. Good suggestion. And yes, I think it's the stock stator, but the rectifier is new, as is the battery. Gonna be a great weekend - - mid 60's and sunny. But chilly at night - - low 30's. Got a fireplace in the hotel room though.
  20. Heading to the TN and NC mountains this weekend, and the low's are looking like they will be in the 30's, so it's time to hook up the Gerbin's. Should be a beautiful ride though. Riding 2-up this time, as the wife's shoulder is acting up and the doc has grounded her from riding her own bike. Any word on running two sets of Gerbin heated gloves off the battery as far as overload is concerned? We've not done that before and I don't want to have any electrical problems so far from home.
  21. Beautiful bike, and a great price. Congrats!
  22. I rode a VTX1300 for a few years before getting the RSV in '08, mainly for the 2-up comfort over long hauls. I loved the X and wish I still had it for myself, as my other half now rides her own H-D most of the time. But she still loves the back seat of the RSV when she wants to sight see and not ride. The Ultra has a kit for moving the tour pack back about 2-3 inches to give more room, but the foot rests are still an issue for longer-legged passengers. And the heat off the engine is a MUCH bigger issue for Ultra riders than for RSV folks. My only other suggestion is if you like the RSV and are looking to buy new, check out the revamped Kawi Voyager. Lots of very nice features, 1700cc's, fuel injected, liquid cooled, and no cassette player! I test rode it a few weeks ago in Orlando at the Kawi dealer meeting, and really loved the ride. Not sure of the rear seat comfort or positioning, but it looks pretty much the same as the RSV. Personally, I'm going to ride the RSV till the wheels come off.
  23. Granddaughter #3 arrived today about a week early, but she has all the right parts in all the right places, and is just beautiful. Shannon Margaret, born 7:10pm, 6lbs 2oz, 18 1/4 in. long. Can't wait to get her on the back seat of the RSV for a ride someday! Babies are the best thing in the world!!!
  24. A very beautiful, very loud black and silver '03 Anniversary Edition Heritage Softail with a boatload of chrome. My better half has been told that she and it are the sexiest thing on the road by more bikers than I can count, and we have a list a mile long of gals who would love to buy it if we ever were to sell it. But that won't likely happen anytime soon. Personally, I think it's uncomfortable, obnoxious, slow, bumpy and way too hot to spend much time on. Other than that, it's great!
  25. Got to see and ride the 2012 Voyager this week in Orlando. I have to admit that I was very impressed with the power, handling, styling, features and upgrade changes they made. The biggest of course was an engine heat redirection fan cowling on the left side (that black cover right under the seat area) which greatly reduces the heat coming off the engine. The fan kicks on whenever the radiator fan is engaged. The bike is still overpriced and requires quite a few options that the RSV has standard, but it rides great. Not a fan of the stock Bridgestone tires, which are noisy and have a slushy feel to them, and their version of a pillow top seat is far from what the RSV offers. The optional sound system is the bomb, and the guages and controls are excellent in placement and design. Overall, I like the bike but not the price tag or cost of the more desirable options. Pictures attached.
