  1. Got some today. Thanks!
  2. I just love the way a bike feels on new tires. Just say'n.....
  3. He lived a great life, gave us some great memories, great music, fabulous TV game shows like $25,000 Pyramid, and was always the first one to wish us a Happy New Year. He always closed American Bandstand by saying "For now, Dick Clark....so long", and gave a salute in honor of his older brother who was killed in WWII. A true 20th century American icon, right up there with Bob Hope.
  4. Very nice! I had a buddy of mine give me a flag pole made of four 18" sections of 1 3/4" PVC pipe that had 2" straight sleeves on each section with a rope down the middle of the whole thing that was very easy to assemble to make a nice size flag pole that is easily collapseable and transportable. It's similar to a sectioned tent pole. The eye grommets are pre-installed, and it has an end cap on the top and a plug on the bottom. Not as nice as yours, and certainly not for flying on the bike, but for holding when on a flag line. This way, I always have a flag and pole with me in my saddle bag and don't have to disconnect or wrench off the pole I use on the bike. Most PGR missions I attend here in GA have a flag wagon present so we don't need to bring our own, but it's nice to have a spare with me.
  5. I just usually go with the recommended dogage of 1 - 2 oz. per gallon, and typically only about once a month or every 3rd or 4th fill up (I use only regular unleaded). My bike doesn't sit for more than a few days at a time at most, so regular maintenance against the possible negative effects of +10 ethanol keep me using it, but not a lot of it. Of bigger concern for me is the quality of gas I buy. There are a lot of off-brand retailers around here, and I've been burned a few times buying cheap gas in an effort to save a few bucks, but never again. I stick with Shell, BP and Exxon mainly, but also frequent Kroger gas stations (since their's is usually the same as Shell) or QT in a pinch. Never will use Chevron, Citgo, Pure, Kangaroo or Vallero again.
  6. When my wife wanted to start riding in '07, she wanted to get right on a Sportster 1200 or Softail right out of the gate. She had some experience years ago on an ATV and a few times on a small dirt bike, but never on a road bike, and she thought she was all that and a bag of chips. So I took her to a large parking lot, make her wear really good protective gear, and put her on my slightly beat up Honda VTX 1300 cruiser to start turning some circles and figure 8's. She dropped the bike like 5 times, and finally admitted that it was a whole different experience then what she expected. I figured that the dings to the bike were worth the sacrifice of getting her to understand that doing it vs. thinking you can do it are two totally different things. She finally gave in and we got her a terrific little Honda 750 Shadow that she could handle - - she took the course, got her license, and 30,000 accident-free miles later has now graduated to the larger, heavier and more powerful '03 Softail. My advice to anyone who wants to start riding is to get on a "beater" bike first, master some parking lot meneuvers, lay it down a few times, and gain some respect for what it takes to ride safely. And take the safety course!
  7. Thanks for doing this....it means so much to the families. I have been involved on and off with the PGR since I saw them stand for one of my son's fellow Marines who was killed in Iraq in November of '06 (an unfortunate victim of "friendly fire"), and it has been a life-changing experience for us. We now count some of the folks we've met through the PGR as some of our closest friends. Even though we've not been able to make as many missions as we'd like lately, we think our involvement has both enriched our lives, and has given us an opportunity to touch countless other lives by showing that there are people out there who won't ever let our Heroes be ignored or scorned ever again, as they were back in the 60's and 70's. And the PGR, through its primary mission statement, has successfully thwarted any efforts by radical nutheads like the WBC from interfering with or disrupting the funeral services for our KIA's. So as they say, "ignore the flak and fly the mission", and be there when and where you can to stand for those who stood for us. It's a great honor we have as Americans to have the freedom to do something like this, and is a great way to both pay it back, and pay it forward. And never, ever feel guilty if you can't always be there for a posted mission - - just follow your heart, and it will lead you where you need to be.
  8. I am far more relaxed and less focused on some things in my F-150 than when I'm on my bike, and therefore more likely to be victimized by another driver when driving than riding. I am totally focused and locked in on everything around me when on the bike, to the point of it sometimes being not as enjoyable as it should be. A good example is when I'm passing an 18-wheeler on the interstate - - in my truck, I don't give it a second thought, but on the bike, I'm exercising extreme caution and getting past it as quickly as possible. It's just a different mindset for me on the bike. For that reason, I actually feel safer on my bike, as I am in more "accident avoidance mode" all the time, and feel that I can get out of trouble faster than I get in it. Nothing statistical about this - - just my own personal opinion.
  9. Thanks for the update Dunc. And great to meet you on Saturday! I really like the look of that F4, and yes, I am one of the ones who really doesn't like looking thru the windscreen. As you saw, I have the 13" shorty-wide screen, and love it. But that vented option is very appealing for hot weather riding, and if it performs as you say, I might could get used to it. I'll keep looking for your updates. Thanks!!
  10. Not sure I see the value in it for me, since I either play my SD music through my Garmin 550 connected through the MP3 port next to the cassette player, or directly off my cell phone set to Pandora. Both work great and play through the AUX setting on the sound system.
  11. Meach, nice to meet you on Saturday. Welcome to the Venture family. You have a real beauty there. If you ever find out the brand of those lower wind deflectors that attach to the highway bars, let me know. If not, post a picture - - I'm sure someone else on here might know who makes or sells them. I'd love to get a set. Thanks!
  12. Also had a great time with all y'all, getting a little much needed work done and learning a few things to boot. Thanks for the carb tune, Randy! I know you said it was just a tweak, but it certainly made a pretty good difference. Mongo, thanks for hosting this, and I hope I didn't make too much of a mess with my little oil explosion from my tour pack. Wow, was that embarrassing! Also, I'll let you know when I'll be able to come up for the radiator cover in a week or two. I met my other half and some friends in Dolonegha at Shanannaghans for a few and some food, then a rain-dodging ride over to Jasper and down to Canton for a few more. Then we really got dumped on! Hey, the scoot needed a bath anyway. Thanks to everybody for the good conversation and idea sharing. Hope to see you guys on the road again soon.
  13. From '99 to '09, my '99 RSV was only fed Yamalube semi-synth oil. I now use 20W50 full synth, usually Mobile 1 and have just under 80K miles on the ticker. No issues at any temp. Filter varies by what I find at a good price in the stores, but rarely ever a Fram. Didn't have a good experience with them. Mobile 1 makes a good filter. I now usually don't change the oil but every 4,000 miles or so, and have started putting a little SeaFoam in the crankcase as well, especially right before an oil change. Really cleans the oil sump out! I also tried using Motorkote in the oil a few times, but did not notice any performance or oil life difference, so I stopped. Good luck with the RSV!
  14. FYI for the 2nd Gen guys, I plan on bringing my lift adapter to the MD if you will be needing to use it. I should be there by mid to late morning. See y'all there.
  15. Welcome Meach....I am also in May-etta, and also a former VTX1300 owner. Loved that scoot. See ya at the MD.
  16. Caution - - this is a very disturbing video of a vehicle that lost control on what looks to be a slippery 4-lane road and got clocked by an on-coming 18-wheeler. Not sure why this driver lost control (were they texting or impaired in some way? Who knows....), but regardless, I'm posting it to keep us all aware that you just can't be too careful. The only thing that gives any solace to this is that the folks in the SUV never knew what hit them. It's a total explosion. Please be safe out there! http://rmirror.net/r/videos/comments/q5hu9/car_accident_nsfl/
  17. Steve, do you have a Carbon One Lift Adapter for the RSV? If not, I'll bring mine.
  18. I'll be there. Can I bring anything?
  19. .....I lost my mom to cancer. I sat up with her all night, holding her hand as she slowly slipped away, finally passing at 4am that morning, 15MAR 1989. Every year since, I stay up all night as I did that night and think of how lucky my brothers and sisters and I were to have had such wonderful parents that raised us right. Sometimes my kids would stay up all night with me and we'd tell stories and look at pictures, but they would eventually fall asleep and I would once again be alone with just my thoughts and memories. Tonight is no different, as the wife is fast asleep, and it's just me and mom. If she were here, she'd smack me upside the head and tell me to go to bed, but now I sort of get the feeling that she kind of looks forward to our once-a-year vigil on this special and sad day. I sure do miss her. If you still have any of your parents with you, keep building some memories with them. You never know what tomorrow will bring, or how those good memories will sustain you down the road. Time to make some hot tea and break out the picture books.......
  20. Randy, if the stars align properly for me on Saturday, I am going to try to make the M & E in Rome. If you see me along the way (two-tone Silver '99 RSV, white half helmet, black jacket or vest), especially on SR 20 in the Canton area, I'll be on ch. 3 on the CB, or just give me a waive. Otherwise, I'll see you at F-ruckers.
  21. Steve, I have had this on my calendar for awhile, and looking forward to my first M/D here in GA. I think I need a carb tune more than anything else, but I'm hoping a few of you more knowledgeable guys can take a look at a few other possible issues I'm having. Nothing major. See y'all then.
  22. Chip, I hope to be able to take Friday off for that mission also, so I'll see you then.
  23. Steve, I don't think that use of an ethanol blend is the issue. It's the amount of ethanol in the blend that is in question here, and the as-yet unknown long term effects on certain engine components, not just carbs. Remember, the EPA regs are only concerned with compliance with emissions, not engine performance, wear and tear, parts malfunction or anything else. The Outdoor Power Equipment Institute's independent study of E-15 shows major potential problems if used in currently designed and manufactured small 2 and 4 stroke engines. The EPA has already acknowledged this. E-10 has been adapted to by engine OEM's over the years, but E-15 has not, so I don't think it's much ado over nothing. E-15 could really become a major issue, but engine performance be damned, there's no doubt that it's here to stay.
  24. **UPDATE** Here is the latest on this development. E-15 cleared the latest government hurdle and can now be brought to market, probably as early as next month in select locations. Here's the details: http://www.jsonline.com/business/e15-ethanol-blend-clears-another-hurdle-2t4glqq-142157163.html In this era of rising gas prices, the price drop will be attractive to some folks. As to putting it in your scoot, do your own homework on this, and don't just listen to what either "special interest group" has to say on it. But NEVER put this stuff in any small engine like a lawnmower or ATV.
