  1. So, your Venture died at 5200. That's one helluvan old Venture! Nick Diaz Middletown, MD
  2. You got it, gibvel! Nick Diaz Middletown, MD
  3. "Quite honestly, if you don't want to ride with me because I don't wear gear up to your standard, it's not going to hurt my feelings. The friendship thing is a non issue as well. I don't want to be friends with anyone that makes such a broad, blind judgment on other riders." That's fine. I respect your choice to not want to be friends with me -- one who makes such broad, blind judgement on other riders. Now, please respect my choice to ride and befriend other riders who feel the same way I do about wearing helmets. It seems as if we do get along well. Nick Diaz Middletown, MD
  4. Full-face AGV 100% of the time. MD is a helmet state, but PA is next door, and I ride there quite often. Always a jacket, gloves, boots, and long pants, regardless of temp. I will not ride with anyone who doesn't wear a helmet. If that makes me an intolerant SOB, then fine with me. Nick Diaz Middletown, MD
  5. I've had my 88 Venture Royale on the road since September, 2008. Running well. Of its 71,000 miles, 25,000 are mine. Nick Diaz Middletown, MD
  6. E-3's on front and rear at 40 lb each. Work just fine on my 88 Royale. Nick Diaz Middletown, MD
  7. I completely disagree. I've been wearing earplugs for the last 20 years, and all the motorcycles I've ever owned have had stock exhaust systems. Earplugs remove the mechanical noise, and also the wind noise. On the Venture, when opening the throttle, there's the intake roar I prefer not to hear. Wearing earplugs does not interfere with my hearing good sounds like car horns, etc. I recommend wearing earplugs, regardless of what kind of exhaust system your bike has. The are perfectly safe. I contend earplugs make riding motorcycles safer! Off my soapbox now........ Nick Diaz Middletown, MD
  8. I use a throttle rocker as well, and it makes a world of difference, especially on long rides. It's a "Crampbuster", the wide type. I use the thumb as well to push to WOT. Nick Diaz Middletown, MD
  9. "Passion for Work and Motorcycling" is the name of a recent article I wrote for http://www.thetentacle.com, a local commentary site. It's a two-parter, with my comments on motorcycling on the bottom half. http://www.thetentacle.com/ShowArticle.cfm?mydocid=4022 Nick Diaz Middletown, MD
  10. 1988 Venture Royale. Ordered three sets of brake pads for the Venture, from an eBay dealer. Used "Buy-it-Now" and the price was good. Shipping was prompt. These were "no-name" pads, intended for the 86-93 Ventures. When I opened the package, I noticed these generic pads are labeled "FA160". I checked out the application chart for FA160 pads, and it shows that they fit other Yamaha models, mostly sport bikes. I know the Venture takes FA123 pads all around. The FA160's are similar to the FA123's, except for the top. The holes line up with each other, they have the same width -- only difference that I could tell is the squared-out top ends. Has anyone ever used FA160 pads on his Venture? If so, any problems? I would try to install them and see, but my VR is at the independent shop getting its annual checking over. I want to know if I should arrange to return these pads, or keep them and use them. Any ideas? Nick Diaz Middletown, MD
  11. Kill those damn things. Every deer you kill is one a motorcyclist won't hit. Good hunting! Nick Diaz Middletown, MD
  12. On my 88 Venture Royale, I use 10W40 year round. I buy motorcycle-specific oil at Auto Zone or Pep Boys, either Valvoline or Castrol. Even in the heat of summer, there's no oil loss. The oil level stays the same all the time. Nick Diaz Middletown, MD
  13. I've had a front Elite 3 on my 88 VR for six months and 8,000 miles. It works great, and shows very little wear. That's the correct size. I got mine from Motorcycle Superstore also. I run a Michelin Commander on the rear, and they work very well together. Nick Diaz Miiddletown, MD
  14. I've had my 88 Venture Royale for two years, and am presently riding on my second Michelin Commander, 140/90-16. Fine tire, no problems, corners well, wears well, and is relatively quiet. Good in wet, on metal grate bridges, on pavement grooves -- predictable and safe. Before the first Commander, I had a Continental which didn't last me very long. I run an E-3 on the front, and find it a good combination that I'll stick with. So, I'm happy with the Michelin Commander. I ride not quite as aggressively as you, but there are some great roads in the MD/PA/VA/WV area that I frequently ride on, and this tire works just fine on them. Nick Diaz Middletown, MD
  15. Firefox works fine, using it right now. Always Firefox. My wife has worked for H & R Block for 34 years now, and she must use IE when on the Block website. Firefox does not work with the interactive stuff they have. Why, I don't know. So she uses IE. Any other time, we only use Firefox in our household, and VentureRider.org works just fine with Firefox. Nick Diaz Middletown, MD
  16. I've had my 88 VR for two years now, with 20,000 miles of my own. I run 10W40 Castrol motorcycle-specific oil. It works just fine, no clutch problems, no transmission problems, no engine problems, no noises -- nothing but good performance mile after mile. Just got back from a 900-mile ride, most of which in very warm weather, and the oil level was exactly as it had been when I left home. Yes, you may use 10W40 in a VR engine with no negative consequences. I ran it on my air-cooled Suzuki GS1100GK for the nine years I had it. No negative consequences either. If the engine is sound, 10W40 is just fine. Being thinner than 20W50, it should flow more easily on cold startups. Nick Diaz Middletown, MD
  17. Use Firefox. Nick Diaz Middletown, MD
  18. I didn't say that Michelin doesn't make a front tire for the 1st gen Venture. I did say American Motorcycle Tire does not stock them. Whether it's because this company chooses not to stock the Venture front tire, or because Michelin no longer has it available -- that I don't know. It doesn't matter to me because I like the Dunlop E-3 on the front of the Venture, and the Michelin Commander is a good one for the rear. (By the way, I had a Shinko Tourmaster 230 on the front of the Venture before buying the Dunlop. It lasted only 6,000 miles. It worked fine, except it didn't last. So far the Dunlop E-3 is wearing well after 3,000 miles). Nick Diaz Middletown, MD
  19. Wrong tire. Here's the correct one, a 140/90-16 rear Michelin Commander: http://www.americanmototire.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=33_176_183&products_id=3751 Nick Diaz Middletown, MD
  20. I have a rear Michelin Commander on my 1988 VR. I bought it from American Motorcycle Tire: http://www.americanmototire.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=33_176_183&products_id=4450 . They don't offer a front one for our bikes. For the front, I have a Dunlop E-3, which I got from Motorcycle Superstore. Front and rear work just fine together. Nick Diaz Middletown, MD
  21. I do not feel the same way you do. I have an E3 on the front of my '88 Royale. So far, after 3,000 miles, I've had nothing but good results in the handling department. It shows very little wear, no cupping, excellent braking, good behavior on metal bridges and pavement grooves. I have a Michelin Commander on the rear, and that combination works very well on my Venture. Nick Diaz Middletown, MD
  22. I'm on Facebook, and use it often. The people in my motorcycle group (the "Between the Sheetz" Gang) all use FB for communicating with each other, posting pictures of rides and events, and talking about upcoming rides. We even have a Facebook page. Look it up. Most of the writers of the commentary site, http://www.thetentacle.com , to which I contribute, also use Facebook to get together, exchange ideas, etc. In this political year, most of the local and state candidates for office also have FB pages to announce events, proposed action, and so on. Very helpful for those of us who are politically active, particularly at the local level. I have colleagues, old friends, and family members on FB as "friends". My wife has a bunch of relatives in Sweden, and we stay in touch that way also. Facebook is a good thing, an excellent way to stay in touch. I can see why some are skeptical about it, and that's fine. I hate the phone, both calling and being called. FB is better than e-mail in many cases for me. Nick Diaz Middletown, MD
  23. 1988 Venture for sale, looks good. http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?threadid=48822 Nick Diaz Middletown, MD
  24. Surely you can, and it should work out just fine. At present I have a Michelin Commander on the rear and an Elite 3 on the front. I haven't had a set of matching tires on a motorcycle in decades. Nick Diaz Middletown, MD
  25. I tried a set of Conti Tours, TK 16 and 17, on my Venture Royale. They worked just fine, but... Only got 7,000 miles out of the front, and 6,000 out of the rear. Replaced the front with a Shinko Tourmaster 230, and only got 6,000 miles out of that one. I replaced the Shinko with a Dunlop Elite 3, and so far so good. So, I wouldn't get the Continentals. They do fine, except you won't be getting much mileage out of them. The Michelin Commander I have on the rear right now will be good for about 9,000 miles. I'll be replacing it next week with another one just like it. Never tried the Kenda Kruz. Nick Diaz Middletown, MD
