So does everyone hate..............

SHINKO! Try them, you'll like them. http://www.motorcycle-superstore.com/1/28/395/43/CLASS/Street-Bike-Front-Tires-Touring-Tires-Tires.aspx Better value for the money I doubt if you can get. I have a front Shinko Tourmaster 230 on the front of my 88 Royale, and it's working out great. When the rear Michelin Commander wears out, I'll replace it with a Shinko. Nick Diaz Middletown, MD -
I live near Middletown, Frederick County, Maryland. This morning my wife and I went to church at Holy Family Catholic Community in Middletown. Two 2nd-generation Ventures, both with West Virginia plates, were in the parking lot. One red, one blue. Red one had US flag and Marine Corps flag on it. Red one was a Venture without the full fairing. I didn't have time to wait and see who you are. Maybe you can identify yourselves on this forum, or via a P.M. Nick Diaz Middletown, MD

Bobcat, I get my tires from Motorcycle Superstore. The last tire I bought from them was a Shinko Tourmaster 230, also for the front, 120/90-18. Go to http://www.motorcycle-superstore.com/1/28/395/6187/ITEM/Shinko-230-Tour-Master-Front-Tire.aspx The price is excellent, $58.99 plus shipping ($6.99). Shipping is free if one buys over a certain amount, which I forget. Even so, $6.99 for shipping a tire is a superior deal. I've had this Shinko on the front of my 1988 Venture Royale for 4 months now, and not quite 4,000 miles. This tire performs flawlessly on all kinds of road surfaces and weather. Metal grate bridges and pavement grooves don't affect the handling much at all. Before I bought the Venture in the summer of 2008, I had a Suzuki GS1100GK. I bought a Shinko, same type, (100/90-19) for the front of the Suzuki. Same excellent results. I sold the Suzuki after only 3,000 miles on that Shinko, so I can't tell you about longevity. Longevity is the only question I have about the Shinko. If I can get 10,000 safe miles out of this front tire, it will be the deal of the century. It's wearing just fine at this time. Some people may badmouth the Shinko because it's so inexpensive. Don't believe them. Try one for yourself -- they've probably never ridden on a Shinko. I have, on two different motorcycles. 51,000 on a Venture is nothing, as long as it's been well taken care of (it probably has been). If this is the only factor to weigh in your decision, then ignore it and go for it. There may well be other considerations in your decision to trade or not. Mileage alone should not be one of them. Look at it this way: If you have only 15,000 miles on a three-year-old bike, then you haven't been riding enough. Get the RSV and you will ride much more often, for many more miles. I have a Shinko Tour Master 230 on the front of my Venture Royale. Size 120/90-18. Best value for the money. Have 4,000 miles on it, and it's wearing great. This tire is V-rated, which some folks prefer, and some don't. I don't care about load rating, since I seldom if ever ride with a passenger. Load rating is fine for the Venture. The Shinko is great in the rain, on grooved pavement, or metal-grate bridges. If I can get 10,000 miles out of it, safely, I'll be very happy. I'll be getting a rear Shinko Tour Master 230 for the rear when my Michelin Commander wear out back there. The best deal on a Shinko is on the Motorcycle Superstore website: http://www.motorcycle-superstore.com/1/28/395/1/0/0/DEPARTMENT/Street-Bike-Touring-Tires-Tires.aspx Price for a front: $58.99 plus $6.99 shipping. This is a great deal on such a good tire. (120/90V-18) Price for a rear: $69.99 plus $6.99 shipping. Another great deal. (140/90V-16) Nick Diaz Middletown, MD

I'm an AMA Charter Life Member, having joined in 1974. Proud to be a member. I don't care about any of the benefits of AMA membership. It's important to me that as many motorcyclists as possible join the AMA and support its efforts. AMA is, after all, the de facto, default representative of motorcyclists before government and industry. I encourage all to join. Nick Diaz Middletown, MD

My 1988 Venture Royale is "Moby Dick." The Great White Whale. Nick Diaz Middletown, MD

I've had my 88 Venture Royale for a little over a year. 37 is the worst, 43 is the best. 40 mpg is what I can count on during a trip (easy to do the math about the next fuel stop...) Any more mpg, I consider that a bonus. Not the best, but at least 40 is a reliable number. Nick Diaz Middletown, MD

Ever since I bought my 88 Venture Royale a year ago, I've been using Castrol 10W-40 motorcycle-specific oil, available at Pep Boys. NOT a synthetic. I use it year round, in all temperatures. No oil consumption that I've noticed. It stays put in the sight glass every time I check the level after a run, on the centerstand, in my garage. Even in the heat of August, the oil level remains the same. No noises, nothing. No problems whatsoever. I've ridden the Venture now about 11,000 miles, with no lubrication problems. I'm staying with what works. I change the oil and filter every 2,500 to 3,000 miles. Nick Diaz Middletown, MD

Shinko front tire on 88 VR
Ndiaz replied to Ndiaz's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Thank you for your concern, jasonm., but the last thing I want to do is get in a silly little argument with you here. I'm trying the Shinko for the following reasons: 1. I'm a cheap SOB, and I want to save money. 2. The tire was cheap. 3. The tire fits well. 4. The tire has 3,000 safe miles on the Venture, with no handling problems, and they stick well enough on wet surfaces, grated bridges, grooves, etc. 5. I'm a cheap SOB, and I want to save money. I check tire pressure very often, and they hold pressure pretty well. So go ahead and run your overpriced Avons; I'm a cheap SOB. What I'm after is value for the money. If I can get 10,000 safe miles out of this front tire, riding the way I do (pretty hard by comparison to other "touring bike" riders), then I'm happy. I'm not concerned about the load rating, because there's plenty in reserve, even with front braking (and I do use, rather heavily, the front brake). Nick Diaz Middletown, MD Thank you for your concern. Allow me to choose to ignore your advice. -
Shinko front tire on 88 VR

I noticed that. I never carry a passenger, and always a light load. I'm well within the tires' limits. -
Shinko front tire on 88 VR
Ndiaz replied to Ndiaz's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Thank you, zlMark. $70 for that rear tire is a good price. I'm sure it will work great on your 83 VR. The big question is still longevity. How many miles of service the Shinko will give, without resorting to "squaring out" or plain wearing out -- we'll all have to see about that. In the meantime, I have over 3,000 miles on my front Shinko, and so far so good. -
My 88 VR runs so well now, there's no need for me to post anything.

I totally disagree. I remember lots of "standard" bikes back in the 70's and 80's had Samsonite luggage, and they all looked great, and, better yet, worked great. They bring back good times. Nick Diaz Middletown, MD

My throttle cable, the "pull" at the handlebar, broke a month ago in the middle of nowhere in West Virginia (88 VR). No cell phone service within 50 miles of the place. Replaced all four, and glad I did. Ordered them from BikeBandit.com, had them within a week. Nick Diaz Middletown, MD

My latest article in http://www.thetentacle.com , a local commentary site in Maryland. It's about food for motorcyclists on the road. http://www.thetentacle.com/ShowArticle.cfm?mydocid=3294 RandyA, I owe you for this. Read toward the bottom and you'll see why. Thanks for the book! 1988 Venture Royale. The pull throttle cable on the VR broke at the handlebar pivot. How difficult is it to replace it? Any special tools? Any words of advice? I won't have time to get into it until Tuesday, so any words from you 1st-gen experts will be welcome. Thank you in advance. simple oil question
Ndiaz replied to KarlS's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
If I were you, I wouldn't bother changing to synthetic. If your Venture runs fine on the stuff you already use, then stick to it and don't stress over needless things. On my 88 VR, which I've been riding for one year, I use 10W40 Castrol petroleum oil. I change it every 2000 to 2500 miles. It does the job. Will changing to synthetic make my engine run better? It may, but it already runs so well, so...why chance a leak? I once thought about doing the same thing to my Venture -- changing to synthetic. I figured it isn't worth the risk. So I ride, rather than worry...
