Shinko front tire on 88 VR
Ndiaz replied to Ndiaz's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Squidley, go to http://www.motorcycle-superstore.com/1/28/395/6187/ITEM/Shinko-230-Tour-Master-Front-Tire.aspx . $58.99 for the 120/90-18 front tire, plus shipping. I forget how much shipping was, but it was quite reasonable. Unfortunately, Shinko does not have a rear tire for our 1st-generation Ventures; no 140/90-16. My rear tire is a Michelin Commander, which I got some place else. http://www.motorcycle-superstore.com Nick Diaz Middletown, MD -
Shinko front tire on 88 VR
Ndiaz replied to Ndiaz's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
After 600 miles on the Shinko front tire, stock size 120/90-18, I've managed to ride in the rain (had to happen sooner or later), and also on a long metal-grate bridge. No problems at all with the tire. Well behaved in both instances. Let's put it this way: I didn't think about whether the tire was working or not -- it was just working. If I get 10,000 or so miles out of this tire, while it continues to perform as well as it does, then it's a heck of a bargain. I got it at Motorcycle Superstore. http://i570.photobucket.com/albums/ss146/gssuzukiguy/VentureJuly093.jpg?t=1246475885http://i570.photobucket.com/albums/ss146/gssuzukiguy/VentureJuly096.jpg?t=1246476059http://i570.photobucket.com/albums/ss146/gssuzukiguy/VentureJuly094.jpg?t=1246476171 -
Last week I installed a Shinko 230 Tour Master front tire, V-rated, on my 1988 Venture Royale. I ordered it from Motorcycle Superstore, at a good price -- less than $70 including shipping. I went on a 200-mile ride on lots of "invisible roads" with twisties, straight sections, and a short section of high-speed interstate. All roads were dry. Excellent response from this tire, rather quiet -- much quieter than the Continental it replaced. No problems of any kind. Still to report: How it handles on wet roads, and how long it will last. If the tire passes these two tests, then it's a helluva bargain. Nick Diaz Middletown, MD

Just sent my payment. Thanks, Condor. Nick Diaz Middletown, MD -
Part 3 of my series on buying a used motorcycle, (something lots of people in this forum seem to enjoy doing), is out this morning on http://www.thetentacle.com , a central Maryland commentary site. My articles come out every other Tuesday, on math education or motorcycling; at this time of year, motorcycling is king. Craig, that is a good place for a meet-n-eat! Here's what was served on Saturday. No menu! You eat what they give you, family style, all for $10.75 plus tax: Mac and cheese Barbecue Lima beans Mixed veggies Salad Cole slaw Hot rolls right off the oven, (with apple butter right there on the table) Apple cobbler (hot) with vanilla ice cream Ice tea or water The waitresses were taking away the old serving bowls and bringing seconds and thirds at will. Very efficient operation. Tables for 8 people. The five of us in our group sat next to three perfect strangers and talked about -- what else -- motorcycles, of course! I can imagine this group of Venture people at that place. Nick Diaz Middletown, MD

So relaxing, none of us wanted to get back on the bikes and head for home. Our stomachs were so full, and it was so hot on Saturday. Here's another picture I took along the way. After our first short rest stop at a country store in the middle of nowhere, I let the other four go ahead of me for a while, so I could take some moving pictures. This one didn't turn out too badly, although it is a bit fuzzy. I'm learning... http://i570.photobucket.com/albums/ss146/gssuzukiguy/GravesMtApril2511.jpg?t=1240877339

Duke, next time my riding group decides to go back to Graves Mountain, I'll let you know. You may want to meet us there, unless you'd rather meet at the start of the ride near Brunswick, MD. The ride was 144 miles long from Brunswick to Graves Mt. Then a "short" 130 miles back home, on a different route, all on "invisible roads" except for a couple of short four-lane segments -- all to get to the good roads. The $10.75 price applies to Monday thru Saturday lunch. That's why we like to go on Saturdays, to take advantage of the great comfort food at a great price. Our reservation was for the first seating, starting at 12:30. They roll up the lunch carrpet at exactly 1:30. We'll probably go back to Graves Mt. at least once more in 2009. I'll let y'all know. Went on a beautiful ride on Saturday (4/25/09) to Graves Mountain Lodge, near Syria, Virginia. Attached are a couple of pictures. There were five in our group -- three oilhead BMW twins, a Concours 14, and my Venture. Saturday lunch is served family style, all you can eat, for $10.75. Good, old-fashioned comfort food. Check them out at http://gravesmountain.com/ . Following the meal, we went downstairs and sat on rocking chairs overlooking the valley. It was hard to get off the rockers and ride home! http://i570.photobucket.com/albums/ss146/gssuzukiguy/GravesMtApril2529.jpg?t=1240869965 http://i570.photobucket.com/albums/ss146/gssuzukiguy/GravesMtApril2525.jpg?t=1240870022

It was my first Venture event, very enjoyable. Lots of very nice people, good conversation, great bikes to look at and talk about. Mine was the white 1988 1st gen. As much as I've been learning about the Venture on this website, nothing beats picking other people's brains with this and that suggestion. Thank you to the organizers of this event, and everyone who made it. Nick Diaz Middletown, MD (Just tuned in to Fox News, and my town is in the headlines -- bad news)

I'd be interested in a fork brace for my 88 VR. How much would they be? Nick Diaz Middletown, MD

I'll go to Gettysburg the back way, on invisible roads. Thanks anyway. See you at noon in Gettysburg. Nick Diaz

For my latest article in www.thetentacle.com , a regional news and commentary site, go to the following: http://www.thetentacle.com/ShowArticle.cfm?mydocid=3110 . Some of you have been very kind with your comments about my biweekly columns, for which I thank you! Math education doesn't interest me as much as motorcycling at this time of year. Never mind, I found the information. It's Saturday, April 18, at noon. Got the place. I should be able to make it. Thank you for your indulgence. Nick Diaz Middletown, MD

Folks, pardon my lack of awareness, but I couldn't find a date for this event. Also, is the time 11:00 am? I'm in Middletown, Frederick County, MD. Nick Diaz
