  1. Rod, part of being a middle aged son or daughter is having to go thru the loss of your parents. I lost my dad nine years ago and ended up buying his house from the estate as I had two sisters and a brother. There are still things I will get into, especially in the garage, that I know he was the last one that touched it. He bought me a Ducati 125 Bronco three months before I turned 14 and in 1995, he took me to look at an 850 Yamaha that he knew of after I had been out of bikes over 20 years. I was lucky that he always encouraged the mechanical side of me and I was the kid that worked on the neighborhood bicycles, go carts, motorcycles and autos from an early age. It breaks my heart to see so many kids now that don't know any more about their vehicles than putting in gas and turning on the sound system. From what you have said, it sounds like you were lucky to have a dad like that also. Loosing a dad that was a big part of your life is tough, but it is still better than loosing a father you hardly knew. RandyA
  2. I guess I am real lucky. We have a local independent shop that has a free exchange thing. He has a bunch of trays of shims and you get what you need and put your used one back in the correct tray. RandyA
  3. Normally, on an o-ring application, what works best is being real clean. But, since this is more of a gasket application, a sealer may be ok. RandyA
  4. Those ought to last you for a long, long time!! RandyA
  5. Hey scoot, I am still using the Chatterbox with the cord and after some upgrades, it works good. Laura and I have talked about upgrading our system to a cordless and hope you will be able to give us all the details. RandyA
  6. Great answer Squeeze. In laymens terms on cams, the difference is lift and duration. Two cams can have the same lift, but when you start lifting the valve earlier and holding it open longer, as in duration, that makes a big difference in power and streetability. Extended duration is where you get much of the lope on high performance cams. Too much duration and bottom end torque will suffer and can make a vehicle almost unstreetable. RandyA
  7. Wow, I envy you folks. Are you going to post more pics, those were great!! RandyA
  8. With the bike at idle, spray some starter fluid up under the carbs around the runners into the heads. It sounds like you may have a vaccum leak to me, even though the carbs synced. RandyA
  9. After Yammer Dan had his 1st crash and found out the guy had minimum insurance, I went back to my insurer, Allstate, and upped my coverage just to have a little more for those "under insured" guys. I hope I never need it, but if I do, it's there. If you guys are running on minimum insurance, it can bite you. RandyA
  10. For east Tennessee, this may be close to one of the coolest July's on record. Even though we are not a lot ahead on rain, we are not behind like last year. For the time being, we are pretty much out of the drought situation. And, we have some rain predicted for the next ten days. RandyA
  11. From my 1st try, .070 would have been too little on my bike. I believe I ended up with about .093 to make my bike happy. Thanks for the note and look forward to the update. RandyA
  12. As the beer comercial said, "It don't get any better than that". RandyA
  13. Be cool man!!! Actually, just try not to roast. Glad you are safely and keeping you in our prayers. RandyA
  14. I think my 2nd gear problem started in the 40's, but I tend to do a bit of WOT thru the gears a lot. RandyA
  15. It was rare that I got 40mpg. After the three washer change, The last three tanks have been 45, 48 and 45mpg. The 48 was 1-up and running from 40 to 55, thru the mountains last weekend. I put new plugs in about 1,000 miles ago and have not looked to see what they look like. The bike is running strong, it is running smooth and I have not noticed the fuel smell when it is idleing, like I did before. With today's gasoline, I doubt the plugs will give as good a reading as they did years ago, unless you are running very rich. RandyA
  16. 16 miles north of Mt Mitchell on the Parkway, you will cross highway 80. From the BRP down to West Marion, going east, that's the Rooster's Tail. Or maybe that should be "Rooster's Tale". RandyA
  17. The Rooster Tail is a great ride. You just have to watch out for poison ivy on your shoulders when you go around the curves to the right. It is much more curvy than The Dragon and the speed limit is either 45 or 55mph. I have made some hard runs up the mountain, but the last few times have been with folks that needed to go slow. RandyA
  18. I am really looking forward to the next Asheville Rally when you get back. We gonna have a good one. I wish you the best of luck Jeff and you and Mini will be in our prayers. RandyA
  19. Are you going to be camping? If you are I have a good suggestion. The BRP really is an exceptional place. I hope you have the time to meander along and enjoy some of the side roads and overlooks. There are many things to see and enjoy. RandyA
  20. After ordering Rider about 2 months ago, I finally got my first copy yesterday and it was August. I understand this is Sept copy and maybe I will get it in a couple of days. RandyA
  21. Just so you know Thom, your coffee pot was used and your name came up several times. We missed you. RandyA
  22. I think of the BRP as my "Magic carpet ride". I feel very fortunate to just be a hour away from it. RandyA
  23. Several years ago I picked up a Corbin seat off ebay that needed a little work. I took the cover off and scooped out about 1 1/2 inches of foam on the driver seat and it not only lowered it, but it made it real comfortable for me. You could probably do that to the stock seat also. It is not a big deal to take the cover off, just a bit of work. And, welcome aboard!!! RandyA
  24. It is my understanding that NC, just like TN, now allows motorcycles to go thru a red light under proper conditions. RandyA
  25. If you take the lever off and push on the piston, does it come back all the way? I have seen them get a lot of slop in them from not being lubed and maybe binding in the bushing, but have not had a problem with the piston not returning. RandyA
