Rear end noise
Venturous Randy replied to jasonm.'s topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Given the rear wheel always turns part of the gear set, even in neutral, on mine I doubt I could get it to make one revolution as hard as I could spin it by hand. This is the way it has been for the 100,000 miles I have had it. RandyA -
Even though the Asheville Rally is a lot more laid back than the Vogal event, it still takes a bit of work and coordination and $ to put it all together. When I posted the original question 12/7/08 about doing another get together in Asheville, which I suggested as an extended Meet & Eat, we did throw out some dates to see what people would be interested in, and got good feedback. In fact, my original suggestion of what would have been next week, was given up for this week because that is when others wanted it. And, the biggie for us was that we were able to have Mini and Muffinman before he left for the sand box. So, now that you are going to skip next year for Vogal, how about we officially look at doing another Asheville sometime next summer? It really is a motorcyclist paradise and the different roads and ride possibilities are endless. For those interesting in camping, the area by the lilly pond basically ends up being us and has a tremendous amount of room for many tents. RandyA

Had a nice ride home across the mountains, took a little over an hour. Laura just yelled down at me to come help unload everything. What an absolutely super bunch of folks. This was another great get together in Asheville and it seemed everyone had a great time. We had great food, a little rain, great rides with LOTS of twisties, a little rain, great visiting around the campsite, a little rain and more good food and the loudest frogs in the lilly pond I have ever heard. I was not sure at first how many were going to be able to show up, but we had a bunch of people and bikes there. I will check back later and hope I can get the pictures out of the camera. Thanks everyone for helping Laura and me have such a great time!!! RandyA

what a surprise after work
Venturous Randy replied to EddyG's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I have made comments on this several times to try to get folks to check the condition of their side stand bolt. It is an easy thing to check and can save a bunch of grief. RandyA -
I just pulled up the original post on Asheville and saw I posted it on December 7th of last year. I also noted I was just trying to get thru the PMS and the temp was 25º below normal. Well, it is finally here and we will be leaving out in the morning. I hope everyone that is coming will have a safe trip and have a great time. Now if I could just get to sleep. RandyA

Hey Gerald, we know some great places both on and near the parkway. Our favorite is Carolina Hemlocks State Park in the valley below Mt Mitchell. It is on Highway 80 going toward Burnsville, NC. It is a great place for kids if they like to swim and is a great place to snorkle. They have hot showers, but no electricity at the camp sites. There is another place just up the mountain from Cherokee, NC. It is part of a Parkway extension road. The road is just like the parkway and goes about 8 miles across the crest of the mountains north east and dead ends. It has running water and bathrooms, but no electricity, It is very nice, but very remote. If I get a chance, I will do the coordinates on Google Earth. There is also some camping at Mt Pisgah that only has water with bathrooms, but no electricity. As you get closer to your trip, let us know and we may have more info. Great pictures Tom. The pavillion you showed is also on highway 80, on the other side of the parkway going to Marion, NC Randy

I am on my third day of a ten day vacation and since I had a few days with Laura in Birningham at a family reunion, I decided to do a bit of maintenance before our Asheville rally. It has been a year since my bike was knocked over sustaining damage to the right side fairing. I took the fairing off month's ago and did the repairs, but did not get it painted. I decided this would be a good time and my painter said he could work it in, so I tore in to her. Friday I took the fairings to my painter after I had 400 sanded them and was hopeing for a quick turn around. He did a great job adding the base coat on the repaired area without getting in to my ghost flames, but when he started the clearcoat, he had a problem with it spitting, so that will have to be buffed and re done. While I had the fairings off, I decided to replace the fork seals, since one had a very small leak. Got that done and decided to replace all brake pads. Two of the calipers had a sticky piston, so I disassembeled and cleaned them. I also needed to replace the clutch slave hose and got that done. Now, I need to do some work on a cracked panel where the radio goes. If I can get that done tomorrow and get my fairings back, I hope I will be good to go. I hate doing a bunch of maintenance before a trip, but that is how it ended up being. Year before last when getting ready for the trip to Vogal, pulling a 450 lb camper, I decided to replace my transmission from and 86 motor. I had all of 12 miles on it after the repair when we hooked up the camper up and took off and it done great. Well, wish me luck. RandyA

Right now it is calling for Tuesday thru Sunday sunny with low to mid 80's day and close to 60 at night. In other words...perfect. RandyA http://www.weather.com/weather/tenday/USNC0022?from=36hr_topnav_undeclared

Is anyone bringing a laptop with a wifi connection? Last year Thom had one and it was nice to check weather and other trivial stuff. (I'm gonna miss Thom this year). RandyA

Todd, I think mini is site 23 and I believe we are 21. If you have not reserved a site yet, you may be able to share with us or someone else. I don't remember if there was a charge to add another tent, but last year we had several more tents than we had sites. The area where we are camping has a lot of room so I don't think you need to reserve a site. Mini, since you suggested the German restaurant, when do you think we need to make the reservations? And, you may have mentioned it, but when are you getting there? We should be there before noon Wednesday. RandyA

I would love to meet you guys, but I will be getting things around here ready for Asheville. Are you going to be able to come up to Asheville for our extended meet and eat next week? RandyA
-
Yes it is and now that Brandy is not going to be coming, we need some more entertainment. Are you busy for that time? RandyA

Wow, Brandy, I am disappointed all over. You and Wayne were one of the major attractions!!! RandyA

A silly idea....
Venturous Randy replied to timgray's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
About anything can be done. It is just up to how much work you want to put in it. Kinda like putting a Cadillac North Star in your Fiero GT. That makes a real sweet combination. Like me putting a 350 Chevy in a 240Z Datsun and putting 156,000 miles on it after the mod. RandyA -
1st of all, the battery display is only an indicator of water level if the battery has a level indicator. If you are dropping from 12.3 to about 3 volts, either the battery is not ok or there is a huge drain that should get some wires hot real quick. Another thing you will want to do is check the fusebox, especially if it is the old type and make sure the fuse holders are tight. RandyA

Carb Sync problem
Venturous Randy replied to Jersey Devil's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
My 1st question is have you cleaned the carbtune restrictors. If you have vacuum and the restrictors are stopped up, they won't read correctly(that's why I like my Mercury sticks). Also, it sounds like you have a big vacuum leak somewhere. You need to get the other stuff fixed before trying to sync, because it may make it worse. RandyA -
Dave, if you do not want to carry your griddle, we will have a large one available for the breakfast meal. I had thought about making Grandfather Mountain one of the suggested rides as last year we went to Chimney Rock, Mt Mitchell, Cherokee and Biltmore House. There is just so many great rides in the Asheville area. RandyA

Beware using your debit card at the gas pump
Venturous Randy replied to Venturous Randy's topic in Watering Hole
What I have learned from all this discussion and discussions with others not on this site is; there does not seem to be one consistant way that this works. I do believe that the banks are not the ones initating the holds, but if the holds cause money to not be available, then they may do the NSF (Non Suffient Funds) charge. I know this because I checked my checking account balance one evening to see if I needed to transfer any money as I knew my direct deposit paycheck was going to be put in after midnight. I was fine and knew what I had spent and what was pending. I got tagged with two $35 charges and when I went to the bank the next day, with a printout in hand, the only thing they could tell me was I had some purchases that had "holds" attached to them and they would not refund my NFS charges. In my case, I had made a fuel purchase, but I had also made a restaurant purchase and I believe they may have done the same thing. So, if you don't keep a lot of money in your checking account to allow for this stuff, and you don't like going inside, usually twice, to make a gas purchase, you may end up paying a lot more for the purchase than you thought you were. Guys buy a Strat because it reminds them of an HD, and they have that same mentality that it looks real good parked in the driveway. RandyA
