As I was coming to work at about 7am, I came upon a city cop in front of me that quickly moved into the right lane on a 40mph 4 lane city street. After I passed, he moved back in behind me and paced me for close to a mile. He then blue lighted me and I stopped, blocking the right lane. I knew I was not speeding, so I was curious as to why he stopped me. When he came up beside me, he advised me that running a strobe in my headlight was against the law. I told him that it was interesting that I have had a strobe in my bike for 13 years and was within about 30 miles of putting 100,000 miles on it and he was the first that had ever taken issue with it. I also told him that I had the flash frequency set slower so that it would not be confused as an emergency vehicle. When he told me that for sure I had better not be caught by a Tennessee State Trooper. I told him I had been pulled over by a TST for a strobe, but it was in my taillight lens, activated by the brake. The TST told me that he pulled me over because I had it behind a red lens and a colored strobe was not legal. I also told the city cop that I showed the TST my headlight strobe and he did not take issue with it. I told him I did it to be seen for safety"s sake and he admitted there had been 5 cyclist's death in our area so far this year. He then told me that he also rode a motorcycle. When I asked him what he rode, he would only say that he had two "sport bikes". He told me that he was not going to give me a ticket, but he sure did have an arrogent attitude. I wonder if I can go another 13 years and 100,000 miles without getting pulled over for a strobe? RandyA

The taking of Yammer Dans bike ... Metric Thunder in WV

Sitting here at work, just trying to get thru the day, hdhtr, you put a smile on my face and I thank you for that. RandyA -
As I was getting ready to pull out the little camper and get it ready, I noticed we still have our big tent. It is one with a big center room that is screened with a room on each end that will zip up. We also have a spare big air mattress. Since Laura will be driving her car down towing the trailer with the little camper on it, we will have plenty of room to bring the tent. This would be for anyone that would like to have a place to stay and have not made arrangements yet for one night or four. So keep in mind that there will be sleeping space available and it might only cost you a cold drink. And, if it is like last year, we never ran out of something to eat and drink(well, we did run out of Biltmore wine, but that is a different story). RandyA

Time to convert to Supporting Members Only
Venturous Randy replied to Freebird's topic in Watering Hole
Don, I am curious, with over 7,000 registered members on file, how many do we have that are now "supporting members"? RandyA -
The two fillups I have done since the mod is about 5 mpg better than before. Running the twisties and up and down mountains yesterday in NC, I filled up and got 43 mpg in what would have usually been at best 38mpg. This was mostly from 20 to 60 mph and a lot of pulling. I really can tell a difference as I still have two bars left at about 140 miles and in the past I would have been in on the last bar for a long time, getting ready for the light to start blinking. I also feel the bike is smoother than before. The only negative I have seen is when I replaced the diaphragms, I felt an increase in power at WOT(wide open throttle). I do feel I have lost a bit of that and am wondering if the needles being a little deeper in the jets is what is making the difference. RandyA

Rear end noise
Venturous Randy replied to jasonm.'s topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Jason, another thing you may want to consider doing is after you take the rear wheel off and with the rearend still on, start the bike up and see what it sounds like as you go thru the gears. You may get some noise because the driveshaft is a bit more of an angle, but it may help isolate more of the sound. RandyA -
Why do laundry, we got a lilly pond with in 20 feet of your campsite. Just take a swim with your clothes on and air dry. RandyA

We are planning on going down Wed noonish. Laura is thinking about doing a pot of natcho meat and we will have chips, salsa, cheese lettuce and tomatos for one of the meals. It could be Wed or Thur evening. It could also be made up as soft shell tacos too. We will also plan on doing a hotdog meal at least once or more sometime. As we get closer and see who is going to be there when, we will figure it out better and we are open for suggestions. RandyA

Carb Problem?
Venturous Randy replied to Donvito's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Worked on a friend's 89 looking for a problem with dead cylinder and it ended up being a corroded resistor in the spark plug cap. It would fire some thru a hand held plug, but not under pressure. Take that cap apart and look at the resistor. Go up inside where the plug connects and you can unscrew the inside and the resistor will come out. RandyA- 16 replies

Venture Royale Rear Shock
Venturous Randy replied to Rick Butler's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
This interesting. My 83 std rear shock has a coil on it. Also on this 83 std with 85 pounds in the rear shock, I would be checking to see if your frame is cracked and twisted near the centerstand. How hard is it to get on the centerstand?. RandyA -
Why do the ventures whine?
Venturous Randy replied to Red Rider's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Actually, I suspect with the CNC type machining setups so common today in manufacturing, I doubt the cost is any different. RandyA -

This is an interesting read and according to snopes is true. It happened in 2005 and the complaining letter to the paper was written by a Navy, Vietnam veteran, who was highly embarressed when he found out what the flyover was about. Over the years and going around the world, some of the details have changed, but it is worth reading. RandyA http://www.snopes.com/politics/military/wakeup.asp

One thing I have never understood and that is blacks following MJ. If I were black and a black entertainer did everything he could to change his looks, voice and anything else to not be black, he would be the last person I would respect. I just don't get it. Also, even though he was whiter than I am, he still has the genetic DNA he was born with and therefore the kids that are supposedly his, could not be his. OK, I'm done venting RandyA

My run was several years ago when Alabama, Mississippi and Louisanna were getting hurricanes and tornados. In front of me was blue skys, to my left was the biggest, blackest cloud bank I can ever remember and close behind me, the interstate disapeared into a deep grey abiss. I was able to stay enough ahead of it until it crossed behind me and it ended up doing a lot of damage in North Georgia. That was the hardest I have ever run my bike for an extended period of time. I remember how slow 70mph felt when I finally slowed down. RandyA

Jonathan, I believe you should be getting better than 33mpg. The last time I got that bad was on a trip out of Birmingham, AL on the interstate trying to keep a head of a real bad storm coming in from my left. I ran for about 80 miles and did not get below 90mph, and some a bit more than that. At that speed an 83 tends to use a lot of gas. RandyA

I spent three years in Goldsboro, NC and made that trip a bunch of times. My wife was living with her parents in New Bern, where my son was born, and we camped a lot at Salter Path, which was sold for 22 million to put up a high rise. Got a lot of memories down that way. Did you ever eat at Wilbur's BBQ in Goldsboro? RandyA

First generation front wheel bearing replacement
Venturous Randy replied to Marvin81's topic in Watering Hole
I wonder how he could tell the bearings were so worn out that he could not balance the tire? That does not make sense to me. I changed mine out a while back and I don't remember it being a big deal. RandyA -

OK, if the speedometer cable is broken again, you need to take the speedometer apart and see if the bearing in the bottom is siezed up due to being dry. This will happen if you continue to ride the bike and the speedometer is squealing. There are posts on lubeing the bearing in the bottom of the speedometer. If you are going to ride the bike with a broken cable, I would take it loose at the wheel so it is not turning if you have not done so. RandyA

It is my understanding that there is a difference between the MKI and MKII on the difference in the diameter of the hole in the slides. I read in another post about using a dinajet kit and it said with the weaker springs, the slide hole needed to be opened up and frankly, that did not make sense to me. I would have thought that weaker springs would require a smaller slide hole as a larger allows more vacuum to pull the slides open quicker as would weaker springs. What would opening up the hole do on the slide actuation, especially with the washer change and extending the needle out .030 more on an 83 model? RandyA

I doubt that the diaphragms as you described would cause the off idle hesitation. I would be tempted to stick the stock setup back in for a quick ride and see if it goes away. These bikes are slightly different and what may be optimum on one may not be on another. Just out of curosity, have you synced your carbs lately? RandyA

Venturous Randy replied to matt73ander's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Matt, what is the status on your 2nd gear, since it is as I understand, an 83? Did you pull the output shaft and look inside yet? RandyA -
OK, I am confused, are you talking about the gear that goes to the timing chain? I am not sure what a driven cam is. And, thanks for the update. RandyA
