  1. most good companies will set down with you and decuss all the opitions with you and see what fits your needs. you need to look at your needs, comfort and short & long term cost to decide what you need. it makes a lot of differances if you'll be living there a few years or 10 or more years as far as pay-back on the system. if i'm not going to stay but a few years there, then i'd just put in a start line priced system. for long-term i'd go for a more energy saving system to recope my investment. these are some of the things them should talk with you about and explain it all to you. and like i said before, get at least 2 or more estimates to keep them honest. the idea about asking around your neighbors is also a good piece of advice. we always say a displeased customer will cost you a bunch of bussiness. most people will tell you about a bad experince faster than a good one.
  2. since this is about tn area i want to let ya'll know that some of us from a couple of delphi forums are going to try and meet up at the star days rally in chattenooga,TN july 20-23. if enough of you want to try for it, i'll post it in the ride section under other clubs. we are looking at the cleveland area to meet in and spend a few days there. the rally is from tues to thur but we maybe go from weekend to weekend to help more attend over 9 days time frame. since there's not going to be a vogel rally this year some may want to attend and ride over to deals gaps, tellico plains or cherohala pkwy. is there anybody in the cleveland area that can checkout the hwy 64/I 75 area to see if there's a nice motel and/or campground we can maybe set up as a meeting place? thanks for any help in this, don.
  3. checkout with your local utility company and they will be able to do an energy acessment review for you and most times it don't cost anything. they will tell you what the heat loss of your house is and the amount of hvac needed to do the job. even if you get just a heat pump, they need to install an outdoor t-stat to cut off the hp below 35 degrees, because below that point when it goings into defrost, it is running the a/c and heat at the same time to get rid of the frost that forms on the outdoor unit. so it cost you twice the power to run it in that mode. they now make variable speed blower unit to kept the outlet air at a higher temp. so it don't feel cool coming out of the vents. a dual-fuel system use gas or oil heat instead of electric heat and give you the warm air in lower temps. goodman is made by goodman factory in tyler, Tx and they also make amanna and a few other names, they'll even put your name on them if you order enough from them. they come with 5 yrs warrenty standard but if your go on-line and register it, they will make it 10 yrs (lot of dealers won't tell you that). ruud is made by rheem corp, they're the same thing but differant colors. you can also just ask your mom and dad how the hvac system thats now in the house does to see if it the right size. if it keeps the house comfortable year-round then it ok. if it struggles during summer or winter then you need to increase it's size up accordingly. i have been doing hvac work for over 40 yrs and seen all kind of crap put in by people that should know better. i always tell folks to get at less 2 bids or more to get the most for their money. check with the bbb to see how they rate the co's you are dealing with to make sure they stand behind what they do. you can also get a bidding war going, but make sure you have a contract with them of what they are to do and they do it. good luck with your search and know you can bounce any Q's off me, don.
  4. well, i usually don't jump into these kind of posts but i would like to say that don has always let the membership in large keep it in good working order. several yrs back he took a poll as to let us have a section to have some off-topics post. and most went for it. it didn't last too long before it cause a lot of strife among the members. the section was done away with and i wholey agreed. i have stopped going to a few motorcycle forum that went too far and had a lot of mad people because of it. i go to all types of forum that i like for differant ideas and advice. some i don't visit anymore because i had enough striff in my life to deal with as most of us, and don't need anymore. THANKS for all you do for us , DON! this is the best forum i visit out of all.
  5. hey! i'm in montevallo and maybe able to help you out. you can call me at 205-665-5778 and leave me a message and i'll call you back. i've oof from work fro leg surgery and just starting to get around some, but if you are not in a big hurry, i'll get it done for you. i also do a/c work and look at that too if needed, don.
  6. if you get the header pipes and mufflers from bubs, you will have a larger set of header pipes. the only thing with them is getting the header pipes on, mine has the welded flanges on them and you have to do some pulling to get the pipes in the ports. another friend got his set and they had a spring washer to hold the flanges on and he was having trouble getting his on. i went over and had to tie the spring washer together with thread to keep them from popping off when putting them on.
  7. i read on a forum somewhere that they make a cleaning kit to clean dulled airplane windshields and you can find it at airplane supply companies. couple of guys said they used it and worked good. i also heard toothpaste would clean some of the scratches and milky film off. i look over my windshield and not thru it so it don't bother me if it not clear.
  8. http://forums.delphiforums.com/royalstar/? check on this forum and ask about the carb swap. there's a write-up on the start page on doing it. several of the guys have done it. i think rssstar has a set of carbs he wants to sell. you also have to have a set of venture carb adapters and an adapter plate because the adapters bolt up differant to heads. there's a guy on there that machines the plates out. good luck with it if you go that way.
  9. the central Al area has a lot going on now as far as motor vechiles being made now! mr barber of barber's motorsports has been in racing for many year and has some of his race cars in the ground floor of the museum. he also got conferate bikes to relocate to this area when NO, La was flooded. he sold out his milk company several years ago and has nothing but time and money on his hands. he also owns a lot of real estate in the area and promotes the area a lot. he became one of the major sponsors for the birmingham, al "ride for kids" a couple years ago and puts out a lot of time and money for it. we start the ride at barber's and ends there with a couple of rounds of the track. haven't seen it yet but he is building a large dirt bike racing area near the museum. we have a lot of car manterfacting in central Al also, so the part supplies are here to help out. there was rumors a few years ago that the goldwing was going to be made at the honda motor plant about 40 miles east of barber's, but i guess they decided to take it back to japan. right after indian went bust, a group of investers was trying to open a plant in area to build it but fell thru. i think this bike will fit a niche in younger sport biker and some of the older ones too. from concept to being made there maybe several changes made as they test it out and find the bugs in it. harley also has a testing facilite over at talladega raceway, but they said they maybe closing it.
  10. well, i guess i stick one up, susan may hate me for it!! we went to savanna, ga and visited paula dean's and her brother's restaurants, don't go in the middle of summer. HOT! HOT!!
  11. got to ezell's today, great crowd and food. i think they stopped the all you can. still good fried catfish. they had one in pelham, al just below b'ham, but moved it over to trussville, al(haven't eaten there yet) bobby, next time you come thru b'ham or get over this way, we may try to get a meet and eat up to go there. there's also a great catfish place over near pickwick lake in shiloh, tn just north of civil war battleground. they do have all you can eat last time i went there, several months ago. probly be a few months before i can ride the bike, but do pretty good in the cage right now.
  12. i checkout some of the sites listed and they are pretty good. i drive about everyday in the birmingham, al area and there's a lot of places they set regularly.
  13. where is it broke at? mine was broke between and the back end of the threaded end next to the cable and i just put a piece of heat shrink on it to hold it together and works find. i have a old one but it's broke too, but i'll see if it can be fixed to work. you maybe able to go to a small engine shop and see if they have one close to it.
  14. you can put a 2x4 under the kick stand and get it a little higher up to get the tire off. you maybe able to break down the tire from rim and put new stem into rim without taking off tire completely. sometime the rubber in the stem just dry rots and starts to leak. hope you get it fixed. you may want to checkout harbor frieght for a bike jack, sometimes they mark them down this time of year.
  15. you maybe able to get some heavy-duty stainless steel pot scrubbers and push them up into the mufflers and quiten them down. use a broom stick to put them in and a hooked-end wire to pull them up. you can adjust the sound by how far in or out you put them. a cheap trick if it works. i have a set of oem mufflers that has a few scratches on them, but in pretty good shape. will take shipping cost to you if interested. may try to get better pics to show up scraps.
  16. WELL, I MESSED UP REAL BAD TODAY, WENT FOR A RIDE AND SUSAN IS PIZZED OFF AT ME NOW!! does anybody know how to get rubber tire burns out of flooring??? LOL just kidding, seen this and i have thought about doing it, just can't get bike up five front steps into the house. thanks for all the good wishes, just tired of being around the house so much.
  17. bike has low rev limiters which will cut-out like it's missing till you get back below limiter. if you read the history and tech pages in the home pages it'll give you a better idea of things to listen and look for during riding. i was told by the dealer i got mine from to keep it under 50 and vary the speed for avout 50 miles and then ride it like you are going to normally ride it from then-on. i did my first oil change at 1025miles and at 4,000 miles i went to mobil1 syn oil and now have over 72,000 miles on it without any problems. if you are a little mechancally inclined you can do most of your own regular maintenance on it. try to look for meet and eats, and mainteance days in your area to learn more about our members and what to do on your bike. at most rallies we have a day or two to work on bikes and all are welcome to attend. the motors are really bullet-proof if maintained regularly.
  18. went in tues for my second surgery to get my leg to heal up from breaking it in 05 when i wrecked my 01 venture. around sun i started getting a pinching in my lower back and didn't think i was going to make it to surgery it was hurting so bad. they gave me 2 valiums while preping me and it didn't do a thing. when they rolled me into the surgery room the sleep doc gave me a shot and last i remembered was them strapping my arms down. when i came to they said the surgery went a lot longer than the 1 to 1 1/2 hrs to 5 hrs. the 2 bones in my leg had grown together and they had to cut and saw them apart. back was still hurting some, but my leg was killing me. they was giving me morphine but wasn't easing my pain much. got out fri and got home around noon and went to bed and got some sleep. pain meds last about 4 hrs and i stay awake a couple of hrs so i don't get hooked on pain meds. got me in a plastic walking form wrapped with a bunch of ace wraps. going back to doc on 15th to see how it's doing. hope it all works out in the long run so i can get back to work.
  19. the biggest problem when frying turkey or anything with moisture in it, is the water boils out at a fast rate when dropped into the frier and thats what causes all the fires. when you put the turkey into the empty pot just put enough water in it to cover the bird, pull the bird out and let it drain most of the water back into the pot. then measure the water and that is all the oil you need to fry the bird. i did a 13lb turkey and only used a little over 2 1/2 gallions of oil. also when you are lowering the bird down into the frier, go real slow lowering it into the oil and watch closly as the water starts to boil out and don't let the oil bubbling up go over the top. if it get close to the top, lift the bird back up a little till it goes back down and slowly lower it down until it stops bubbling over. very important to use some heavy gloves when handling the lift hook, when the steam starts coming out of the pot it will scold your arm and hands or any flesh need it. you can also fry a few potatoes after frying the bird and it'll help clean the oil, and after it cools and solids goes to the bottom, you can put it back into the jugs and keep it in the refrig and use it again for x-mas.
  20. i stopped by there while i was at the tail of the dragon this year. they also rent bike too. the tire store wasn't open then, guy said it would be a month or so. it a nice place being that close to the area that has a lot of riding going on. should do a good bussiness, they were pretty busy the day i was there.
  21. the newer models have air valves on the top of the forks, where you can add up to 7#s of air max to them. you need to use a hand pump that has a zero air lose fitting. progressive make one that you can find at the harley shop. if you don't have them, you can add them to yours, according to how mechanical you are. i have added them to a couple of other's bike, that i have drilled and added the air valves to them. you can find the air valves at some auto part stores, or big truck supply houses. i have a set of caps i can put the valves in and do a swap with you if you think you can change them out. you can do a oil change and go from 5 weight oil thats in the oem forks to 10 weight and it will help out too. the air-over oil set -up will stop the diving you get when you stop fast or take off. if you have a stock tool kit you should have a spander wrench( about 6" long and has a small hook on curved end) that you use to adjust the back shock. first you need to lok at the shock and see if it's oily, it maybe that your shock has blown a seal.here's a couple of pics of valves. let me know if i can help you out. if you have a repair manual look in it to see if they show them in there.
  22. great to see such a turnout! and no problem from you-know-who(don't even like to put up their name, so as not to give them any knowledgement). we just had a new national cemerty open up about 4 miles from us this past memorial day and already over a 100 has been interned there. some was being held almost a year so they could be interned there. a close friend of mine that passed was layed there. thank god there are many-many more that suport these young men in their service to their country, family and friends than not. keep up the good work, don and susan.
  23. red and silver stripping looks good on yellow, makes it stand out. i seen a 05 tour deluxe painted about the same yellow, at first really didn't care for it, but after looking at it, it starting looking a lot better, it was just a whole lot of yellow like the goldwings.
  24. if you have a gps take it to help if you get off-track and need help to get back. it's also helpful when you are not familar with the location of gas along the way.haven't been off I-10 thru that area but there are lots of members in the area and will problly help out. sometimes when i take a long trip and stop in larger cities, i try to find out if they have any bikes night i can visit, have had a lot of fun and meet new friends doing this. you can go to thunder road mag or others that list them and some has websites to look it up on. i'm also a member of southern cruiser and i use their website to find where they are too. it maybe easier for you to break it up for at least one way to see how you do. make sure your tires are good to go and any close maintance is done before you put the 1,000 miles trip on the bike. good luck and have a good time. you can also post your trip on site and may have some members meet you in the cities you are visiting, don.
  25. they need to do like they did here in birmingham, al when a gas truck crashed and burned up a major bridge in the middle of town of 3 major interstates meeting. they offered over a million$ bonus for getting it done in third of time estimated to repair. they finished a day ahead, but then everybody want to know why they had to pay the bonus if it was possible to do it in shorter time.
