Gear Indicator / Neutral
MiCarl replied to tpalshadow's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I believe the neutral switch (which lights the light) is an entirely different circuit than the gear position switch, which the CMS reads to show the gear you're in. Sounds like your problem is with the position switch, its wiring or the CMS. -
darn potholes in the road
MiCarl replied to Karl C.'s topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Ouch! Lucky you weren't hurt. You might want to look into making a claim against the municipality that was responsible for the hole. It's a long shot, but probably worth looking into. -
So far been very happy with my Kenda Kruz, 2K on front, 4K on rear. Have ridden two up in rain with no problem, two up with trailer (no rain yet) without a problem. The front does seem to be more inclined to follow "tar snakes" than the ME880 I took off. Just so we're all clear about the tires: The Kenda Challenger is not an appropriate tire for the Venture.

The real test of character is if you do it for an ugly chick.

Yamaha (and every other brake builder) made the hole small so it doesn't bleed much fluid when you apply the brakes. Enlarge it and you'll loose braking ability. Need to be careful probing it with a wire so it doesn't get enlarged either. Much better to use compressed air if you can.

Pivot point on clutch lever will wear out. It doesn't have to wear much to cause enough play to mess you up on the starting in gear and cruise control. Sounds like it's time for a new lever.

That would be an easy fix. Put it on centerstand, remove fill plug, and any excess should run out.

Progressives and Seal?
MiCarl replied to tpalshadow's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Not necessary to change the bushings unless they are worn, and it's easy to tell. On the other hand it's a nuisance to tear the forks apart then have to wait for bushings to come in. As stated, they're relatively inexpensive - I'd just have the parts on hand and do them. I almost always use aftermarket seals. I've never had a problem with them and they are about 1/4 the price of Yamaha (which probably come from the same tooling anyhow). In fact, I have one set of seals in stock. Use the coupon code "VentureRider" at check out and they're $9.80 (for a pair!) Thunder Valley Powersports Store. Yamaha seals are $18.44 apiece from a discount online seller.- 7 replies

What the Avon rep told me is that the way the belt ends are lapped give the tire a better ability to withstand torque in one direction. On the rear tire the lap is positioned to withstand the torque of acceleration where on the front the lap is positioned to handle braking torque. Of course if you turn the tire around the tread pattern will run the wrong way. This might create other issues.

I'm under the impression that letting fluid out always unlocks them. If I've got that right you don't have a caliper problem. If releasing the bleeder or banjo bolt unlocks them then you either have a master cylinder problem or too little free play in the pedal linkage. Did you check the free play?

Conventional flooded batteries are not sealed, so they cannot be shipped on an airplane if they have acid in them. Since most shipping services use airplanes you cannot get one with the acid in it unless you purchase locally. Auto parts store might have battery acid. If you have a Batteries Plus near you they might be talked into doing it (they flood their batteries in the store).

Rain or wash yesterday? The tach is electronic and gets it's signal by tapping into one of the ignition coil primary circuits. Mine does the same thing if I really hose it out good. After a couple miles the water evaporates and all is fine. Like me, you may need to find a troublesome electrical connection.

You'd be amazed how many people think North is "up" and South is "down" therefore water flows from North to South. Up North, down South you know. Just look at your globe and you can see it's true! Annie, time to send this month's shipment of water back.

clutch friction point?
MiCarl replied to 6m459's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
The clutch lever should return completely regardless of the rest of the system (it has it's own spring). You might check for a worn pivot. The friction zone on my 89 is in well away from the bar, the last 50% of pull has no effect. I wonder if people who have the friction zone nearer the bar have air in the system. FWIW, as the clutch wears it returns fluid to the master cylinder, the opposite of brakes. For this reason you never want your clutch master cylinder completely full. -
owners manual
MiCarl replied to titansedriver's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
It is a "Y" and your "O"s should be "0"s (zeroes). The correct VIN is JYA1NLE0XKA028509 Comes back as 1989 Yamaha XVZ13D (the D is Royale). The VIN decoder does not return the year letter (W on yours) or the California emissions designator ©. So the motorcycle in question is an XVZ13DW or XVZ13DWC. -

The C on the end is for California emissions. Same manual for both. -
If the free play in the rear pedal is too tight the relief hole in the master cylinder will not be open, keeping the fluid from returning to the reservoir when it expands from heat. That will apply the brakes, which heats the fluid more causing it to expand and apply the brakes even harder. It's a nasty cycle. (you get three guesses how I know this:big-grin-emoticon:, and the first two don't count). Of course if the relief hole is plugged by 20 year old gunked up brake fluid it will cause the same symptoms. You probably introduced air when you opened a banjo bolt - time to bleed them.

What to look for?
MiCarl replied to tpalshadow's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
You don't fill it, it has it's own compressor. It only works with the key in the ACC position. It'll read 0PSI until you select either front or rear, at which point it shows you the pressure in that portion of the system. It's got buttons for High, Medium and Low. The system won't do anything until you select one of those. It has a Manual switch that will allow you to use the increase/decrease buttons to set pressures other than the High, Medium and Low defaults. -
What to look for?
MiCarl replied to tpalshadow's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Look carefully at the plastic for cracks or repairs. Check the tires and brake pads. Of course make sure it runs well, all the lights work. Should ride smoothly without any clunks, suspension shouldn't sag excessively etc. Hold the front brake and push down on the handlebars a few times, look for oily rings on the inner fork tubes (fork seals). Look for any oil or coolant leaks, check again after you ride. It has a CMS (systems status display), make sure that after it's self test all indicators go out except side stand (if down) and fuel level. If it's a Royale (I think maybe all 88 on are) check the CLASS (air suspension controller, only works with key in ACC position), the radio, CB and intercom work. A good trick is to look at the fluid color in the window of the clutch and front brake master cylinder. Anything lighter than honey colored indicates they've been maintained. Darker doesn't necessarily indicate a problem but brake fluid changes are often overlooked. If they've been kept up odds are the other stuff has too. -
The 2nd gear issue was in the 1st Gen MKI models (83-85). The 1st Gen MKII models (86-93) do not have the problem. The 2nd gen (current line) do not have the 2nd gear problem either.

On the 1st gen (83-93) it's either speakers or headsets, not both. I believe the 2nd gens are the same. I think you'll need two sets of buds. Why not go the whole headset route so you can use the intercom and CB too?

Don't know what DOT regulations are but they should be on with the running lights. They're not brake lights. How about the rear lights? The brake light should be much brighter than the running lights. Don't have the running and brake/signal lights switched do you?
