  1. The tank was rusty, very rusty, cleaned that up and the carb again. It's the electrical I'm wondering about. I know it sparks at times, sometimes stronger, sometimes not so good. How does one tell if the magneto is working up to snuff?
  2. There is a glue some guys have used to fix this, I can't remember the name of it right now, but you will have to remove the sight glass to do it properly. If you have Seal All in your stores, that will do the job, and quickly.
  3. Timing is right on. Yes I have got spark, but wonder if it is strong enough, so it's got me wondering on the strength of the magneto Yep, that all seems to work proper.
  4. Magnets are bolt located, so no movement possible,,,, but, can they be put in backwards? Best explain the procedure on this, I have a dwell meter, and this is a kicker only.
  5. Here's my problem,,, I know, I got lots but this one has me stumped. My son bought a 82 Honda XL80s for my grandson. It was running and they did run it around the back yard a few times, but then it quit. So dad to the rescue. I've been working on this thing for 4 weeks now, and it just won't run, not even give me a burp. That said, I did have it running at one point, but the slowest it would go was about 3000 rpm, so I shut it down and since then, nothing. History. When I brought it to my garage I found the stator flywheel loose and the key sheared off. replaced the key, points, condenser, cleaned the flywheel, (took all magnets out and re-glued them) cleaned the carb, tried 3 different coils, but seem to get an inconsistent spark at best. Got about 90 lbs compression with 3 kicks on the starter, 120lbs with a shot of oil in the cylinder. Tried WD 40 to help it fire and then even some ether, but no fire period. I need some fresh ideas.
  6. All in all, the more you do yourself, the better you understand your machine. If you had done all this work yourself, you would have had a whole new tool set, stainless lines and money left over for some more safety chrome.
  7. Before I would do anything and make any decisions, I would clean and dielectric grease all the connectors from the stator and rectifier, as well as the ignition connectors and the battery terminals and ground on the engine. Then I would go searching if the problems persisted. You need to start at square one so to speak.
  8. You just never know when something like this might happen. Feller maybe should make a cart, just in case,,,, 'Oak' street might be a bit far and he could get a little tired dragging her all that way.
  9. Way to heavy to be comfortable, and safe. Also with the age, if you do look at something that old, be sure to check the frame underneath for rust, could be almost completely gone.
  10. Don't worry about it,,someone is trying to play with you, hoping you wouldn't notice until you started it up. Employees!!!!!!!!!I'd fire the whole bunch of them!!!
  11. Forget it Dan, you have a garage to build.
  12. We had an adventure last year, Wizard765 needed to have 2nd gear redone. We were so good at it, we thought just for the fun of it we'd get that engine in and out in record time. The first time it took a while, but by the third time, I had that engine ready to come out in 1 hr 15 minutes, and yes, all the clothes were back on already,,,, don't ask me why, but it happened just that way! Getting it back in was more of a picnic, but if you hold your tongue just right, lean a bit to the side and then look away at just the right time, it all comes together with the swing arm in place, but you will have to remove the drive shaft. After putting 4 engines back with the SA attached, I still haven't not blinked at the right time to know exactly how it was done, but it was a PITA. So swing arm removal and service is recommended. Just make sure that if you do the 2nd gear thrust washer thing, you take out aaaallllll the old washers first!
  13. Ya, haven't even got you to the confused state yet,,, but that will happen,,, and then it will cost you to get out of that.
  14. Just so you know, you have a 1st gen, and all they want to do is go, so get on it and ride. They're old enough that they don't care about their looks any more, so it's trying to tell you something. Yep. my 1st guess is ignition switch, try spraying some WD 40 or Deep Creep into it, work it some, spray some more, and see what transpires. In the end I would finish with a good spraying of contact cleaner, and then a bit more WD.
  15. Guess in the end we might be able to command a better price for our brains,,,, now the trick is, how to get somebody to invest in us using our brain as collateral.
  16. Oh my!!! you wanted to know right away???? sure: M5x16x1.25, although some applications may need to have them 20mm long.
  17. I posted this in the 1st gen tech forum, maybe not everybody reads that, so I thought to put a link here. I really thought there would be more interest in these side covers from the comments I get when we gather. Don't want anybody to miss out. This will be a one shot deal, so follow the link and post your thoughts and wishes. http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=67117
  18. Don't have any preference, I kind of like the way I was made, and after passing the 30 year old mark, am quite used to it by now. To go and change my looks at this point would only confuse me.
  19. Now if they were in shouting distance,,,,, but hey, we'll do what we can, and that is to ask the Father for a good time and support for all that gather to help the help, ful.
  20. Nice thing about our bikes is that often times we don't even know that they are running on 3 cylinders, so if it does go again, you can still get home!
  21. Hey, we have to leave something for a surprise don't we??? Did consider that, but I thought not to put in negatives, but just to leave that to ones own imagination. Thanks for the cool shower, now I can go to bed happy!!
  22. Correctly???? we aren't supposed to use that word here are we? Let's not give anyone the idea that we might even have the slightest as to what we are doing,,, then we might have to get a license.
  23. Happy B-Day olde boy,,,, take it easy for a day to see what it will be like, and so you can get used to it.
