  1. As far as wrenching yourself, I watched Rich99 do his clutch last summer and it's pretty straight forward. The only thing that gave us a bit of a problem was the exhaust header getting in the way of removing the bottom clutch cover allen screws without pulling the intire exhaust off. We found that if you just loosen the exhaust mounting bolts a bit you can get a ball end allen wrench in there and remove the screws. Thought this might help when the time comes...?? Or not???
  2. I gotta admit they do look cool, but I'm wondering if it's worth the PITA to clean one every time I change the oil. Me thinks I'll stick with what I have now and just pitch 'm when changing the oil..... Besides I can buy a ton of paper filters for $149 bucks....
  3. Wish I could say the same thing about my son's XS850. He let it sit for a couple of years and the choke plunger rod in the carb corroded so bad it wouldn't move. He's got the carbs tore apart and we're now looking for a set of 'Parts' carbs to get it running again.
  4. I stopped by the local Walmarts looking for a set of the Platinum Burners and didn't find anything that looked like the all chrome set I picked up off Ebay so kept walking. Then I thought.... maybe they were just out of stock, and did a google search for Walmart Driving Lights. I found this very interesting write up on all driving lights and thought it would be worth passing on. CLICK HERE BTW the set I found on Ebay ran right at $30 bucks to the door.
  5. That doesn't sound normal. Could be a lot of possibilities, but I bet your dealer will be able to tell.
  6. Well at least you didn't get real carried away like Lone Eagle. We saved him in the nick of time.....
  7. Geeze Brad, glad to see you and Lonna back on two wheels again. I missed the whole gist of this thread as I gave up after the first page of posts and the big tease. I don't don't take teasing very well... Anyway nice looking scoot.....
  8. I park with the cages, a I'll park back far enough that the back of the bike is visible along with the other cage rears. It pisses me off when I'm caging and looking for a parking space, see what looks like an empty one, and when I get up to it it has a scoot stuffed in as far as it will go. I don't like it, so I don't so it......
  9. Just a thought. There's a Kodel saddle pad that might work even better for those tender backsides. You can find them at every saddle shop, and farm supply/feed store. They come in permanent colors that won't bleed if they get wet. It's the same stuff they use to prevent bedsores in hospitals. Looks a lot like sheepskin...
  10. On the '83 I got 50mpg while riding Venture West III in Susanville, but when I rode to Ft Collins I managed 38-39mpg. BTW I used Shell gas over the Susanville weekend, and what ever I ran into going to and from FC. Never changed a thing except the oil??? However.... now that I think about it a bit I packed everything in the saddles and trunk for VWIII, and looked like the 'Grapes of Wrath' to and from FC. Musta been aero-dynamics.
  11. WOW!!!!!!

    Ride On?

When I talked to the guys at Ride-On they caught my 2 bottle order and changed it to a 3 because it was a better deal, and if I remember, cost less??
  13. My thought too Eck.....
  14. It should be fine Bucky. The life of a battery is dependant on the duty cycles that occur during it's lifetime. I duty cycle is how many times the battery can be discharged to a certain level and recharged. If a battery is never discharged, theoretically it should last forever. If you only discharge the battery for starting and never take more out of it than the stator produces for the electronic load, then it's going to last a long time. Without getting real scientific if you've only pulled 80amps out of an 80ah for 10 secs to start the bike, and then rode it long enough to recharge to max, theoretically the battery would last for 9,000 starts. However.... leave it in a particially discharged state, or pull more amps out of it then the stator can produce to run the electronic load, and the battery life will be shortened considerably. In your case I suspect your battery doesn't receive any load other then pulling starting duty, and you're riding it long enought between starts to fully charge, and it's going to last quite a while. One or two starts a day and you might get 7-8 years out of it. Let the bike sit and without charging for 3-4 months at a time, and then throw a charge at it, and 2-4 years is all that can be expected. Remember we're dealing with 26amp MC batteries, not 80ah's, and starters that pull some pretty good amperage. Geeze.... did I get carried away......
  15. No problem. If you decide to go for one just go ahead and send the payment thru Paypal. I'll get the notice and know what you want....
  16. Dave- I had a spare that sat for just about a year before I used it. Didn't even have to charge it before hooking it up. Shelf discharge on these things is just about non-existant. Stick a charger on one about every year and it's good to go anytime. You don't need to babysit it....
  17. We need pictures.......
  18. Dang... I like Guinea Pigs. Keep us posted on the results. I wouldn't worry too much about the rubber, but definately keep that stuff off the paint. Even the frame paint. Another thought is... I've heard Goof Off works pretty good.....
  19. Nope, you're still good Ron. Go ahead and do the Paypal dance, and I'll put you in the notice box. We have 5 committed, and I'm shooting for 10 or more. The last time around we had 19..... Odyssey is getting to like us...... a lot..
  20. Yeah, that yellow is ugly. I had my covers buffed out commercially when I pulled them to do the clutch... clutch slave, plus I have an extra stator cover waiting in the wings.... A lot 1stGen owners have stipped their cases with a bunch of different products, and this is just thought???, but I wonder how plain old DOT 3 brake fluid would react on that old varnish?? I know it can screw up a painted surface real quick, but maybe if carefully spread on an aluminum cover it might do the job. Afterwords it can be neutralized with plain water.
  21. Aside from all the mechomical replys.... You might also check the clutch rods to make sure you have them installed properly. There's a flat end on both the short and long rod. That flat end goes against the ball. The rods will bind in the tube if you have the round ends against the ball. Don't ask me how I know that... Also... i can see it, but can't name it..... there's a nut and bearing that holds the boss on. One or the other is cut out so one fits over the other...hey it's been a while.... and if it isn't installed right it will hold the presure plate away from the plates.... no clutch..... Also gotta ask. Are you saying that your not getting any resistence from the lever, or it's binding and you can't move it???
  22. No where in all that hype did I see any mention of expected miles per gallon. Can't be that good............
  23. Bet the mud would roll right off........:rotf:
  24. The OEM is over 4' long. When the OEM get's stuck it's a bear to get it unstuck. I usually cover the base with a towel and take a pair of channel locks to it.... gently... It'll usually starts to turn with little effort. Once moving it's a piece of cake. Here's a couple of pics of an OEM antenna base. Rather than a grommet the cover I mentioned has about a 10" velcro slit that lets the antenna move forward or back as needed.
  25. Saw this new product listing another board. With Rain-X being harmfull to shields, and being discussed in the past in several threads, I thought Raincoat might be something to look into for those riding in the rain. http://www.motosolutions.com/ Here's a short video. Looks pretty good to me.. Hope the link works. http://76.12.111.23/Videos/RaincoatDemo.wmv
