Recent Update on Big Bird
mm482 replied to midnightrider1300's topic in Inspirational, Motivational, Prayer Requests, Etc.
Prayers going up for Big Bird and family. Earl -
They are held on with double sided tape. Mine came off fairly easy. I used a small flat blade screwdriver and worked it under the edge of the pad. Once I got the blade under the edge, I could work it around under the whole pad and pull the pad up. I think I added new double sided tape when I put them back on. Earl

Testing coils off a bike
mm482 replied to KIC's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
You can measure the resistances with a good ohms meter. The primary winding should have 2.7 ohms + or – 10% at 68 * F. The secondary winding resistances should be 13.2K ohms + or – 20% at 68*. Earl -
:thumbsup2:Sure glad you were there to give a helping hand. Earl

I will be praying for you. One of my friends went to work with our local MC dealer when he retired. He is very active in the GWRRA and deals mostly with Goldwing parts. He works about 10 months each year and seems to love it. Earl

Thanks for the up date. We will be keeping Big Bird in our prayers. Earl

Welcome to the family and congrats on the new bike. I trust you will have many safe, fun filled miles on it. Earl:thumbsup2:

"So... I'm assuming that the 29 ft-lbs is for the two bolts that attach the caliper "carrier" to the fork and the 18 ft-lbs is for the bolts holding the caliper to the "carrier". Can anyone verify that for me before I take things apart? Thanks." You are correct. Earl

Awsome, glad it all worked out. It's better to make a friend than to make money. Earl

Goose has a good write-up on windsheld tab repair in the second gen tech section, it is under plastic and paint repair. Earl

Plastic and lock tight do not go together. Lock tight destroys the plastic body parts. I hope you can get it all fixed up and back on the road. Earl

Former Long Manufacturing facility to fall soon Editor and PublisherJohn H. WalkerThe Daily SouthernerFri Mar 23, 2012, 05:09 PM EDT TARBORO — A little more than 64 years after William “Bill” Long founded the facility that would employ thousands of people over the years at 111 Fairview St., the buildings are being prepped for demolition. Electric crews from the Town of Tarboro were on-hand Thursday afternoon, unhooking power cables so that crews inside could pull the nearly 150-foot piece of cable with a tractor. “We heard these buildings are going to be torn down,” one of the workers was told. “Yep. They’re getting them ready now,” he replied. While electrical cable was being pulled in one building, fire extinguishers were gathered together by door openings in one building and row after row of 18-inch wide Mercury vapor lights lined the floor in another. The facility, which was purchased by Rogers, Ark.-based Montana Tractors in November 2008, is still listed in that company’s name on the Edgecombe County tax rolls. Montana bought the operations for $14.1 million and now pays taxes on a property assessed at $1,399,979. Once the buildings are torn down, $1,141,379 in assessed value goes away. In the 1970s, Long Manufacturing Co. employed 1,100 workers in Tarboro and another 400 in Davenport, Iowa. By 1980, with the plight of the American farmer in what looked to be a death spiral at the time, employment dropped to 750 and then, by the time four creditors filed a petition in U.S. Bankruptcy Court asking that the company be placed in bankruptcy, the workforce was down to 400. http://static.cnhi.zope.net/sites/images/pg/images/pg_top2_sm.gif

They are fantastic bikes, but they are the best keep secret in motorcycling. The Venture Rider site does a much better job getting the word out about just how good they are than Yamaha does. Welcome to the Venture Rider Family. Earl

The 86 will not work in the 83 dash. Earl

I got two pictures, taken by Blind Kenny, on my ride up 80. I will try to up load. They got 6 or 7 shots before I could get around the turn. I had to be really going slow for them to have time to get that many shots. Will not up load??? Earl

Done!! Earl:thumbsup2:

The part # on the one off the 86 is 41R-M15Y9. It has two elt. connectors, one has 9 flat blade connectors (5 on the top row and 4 on the bottom row). The other connector has 14 small round pins (7 on top row and 7 on bottom row) Earl

I think I have one from a 86. If it will work on the 83 you can have it. Earl

Joe, is the bike's charging system working now? I enjoyed the visit last week, maybe next time we can get together for a ride Earl
