  1. :sign yeah that: What Rocket said. Was the tank full to the top when you started your 115 mile ride? It is possible that you are only running on 3 cylinders, these bike run so good that the only way you may have noticed a dropped cylinder is the lousy gas mileage.
  2. Not sure about the 83 but on my 88 there are two plastic plates on top of the engine, these plates do a lot to help keep engine heat away from the rider by deflecting the hot air out the bottom and back. People have removed them just to make access easier. When you stop you will get hot fast. So don't stop riding, just don't ever stop......
  3. I can see both sides. Yes you always save a life when possible. But rules are rules. Termination is a little extreme, especially in this case. I'll bet someone offers him a job somewhere.
  4. Wild 4th parade. http://www.todaystmj4.com/news/local/161363625.html This happened almost right in front of me. Fortunately it did happen right in front of the paramedics. Later that night the fireworks were canceled mid show after they started a fire. We are in severe drought conditions here.
  5. You have a number of seeming unrelated issues, the one common part is the fuse block. If it got hot enough to melt, then it is toast and not worth much effort. As a short term temporary fix you can try taking each fuse out and gently squeezing the tabs closer together to get better contact and see if that helps your issues. it is very easy to break the tabs off while trying to get some grip back on the fuse but this will at least let you know if the fuse block is the real issue. When you jump from the battery + to the starter side of the solenoid you have bypassed all of the safety circuits on the bike. If you are going to jump the starter you are the one that must be sure it is in neutral and or on the center stand with the rear wheel off the ground. I thought the start switch only turns off the headlight, not all of the lights.
  6. Yup most engines like cool/cold air. When the air is cold it is more dense, this means that the air molecules are packed closer together. So when the engine sucks in air it can actually get more air in. The more air you can put thru the engine the more power you can get. That is what turbos and super chargers do, they pack in more air.
  7. With pulling a trailer and the clutch already slipping, the clutch may be completely gone before you get to the rally. What may right now be just a fluid change or a spring change could end up being a full clutch replacement on the side of the road. (still a simple job if you have the tools and parts) If the clutch does go out completely then you will also have to do several quick oil and filter changes to get all of the burnt clutch crap out of the engine. As mentioned I would start by checking the fluid in the clutch reservoir. That can be changed or lowered as required and still give time to order and get parts shipped today if they are needed. If you are going to go for limping to the rally, make sure you have some member phone numbers with you for possible roadside assistance. Even better would be to have all of the necessary parts with you just in case.
  8. Of course they are. I have my guns ready
  9. Did you really have to take the rotor off to use it? All of the changers that I have seen used were able to get the tire on and off without removing the rotor(s).
  10. Wimin and wine? :confused24: At least that is what I tell the better half to justify the cost of my hobbies.
  11. I really wish I had the opportunity to go thru the dirt bike phase when I was still young and immortal. I do not have the reflexes for loose ground if things get that bad. I'm to old now to start learning a dirt bike, I wont heal as fast between lessons.....
  12. :sign yeah that: If it is leaking from anywhere else then you have an issue.
  13. It was truly a memorable weekend. Orlin you did a great ride thru the hills and valleys. Thanks again. I am a lousy photographer, I never had the camera when I needed it.
  14. Well I'm glad someone did.
  15. Many states have an allowance for bike to run a red that is not detecting them. Most states have different rules as to the amount of time or circumstances where it is legal to do so. You must check with your state to find out which rules apply to you.
  16. I put a big rare earth magnet (2 x 1 x 1/2) on my bike and it has solved the problem of not tripping lights. Much less bulky than a speaker magnet and stronger too. Yes I have found nails stuck to it, but I figure that those nails were headed for my rear tire.
  17. Dan Stop with the :bang head: already. Did you hurt the oak tree that you smacked with your head?? Sounds like you have a house full of labor to get that garage finished off...... Glad your OK, Hope everyone out that way is too.
  18. None before? How about during and after??? Mmmmmm........ Rumballs..........
  19. Dang, glad you two will be OK. My damage sure sounds minor compared to yours. That was a real nice looking trailer too. Did you at least get to keep the deer, not much meat but what is there would be real tender....... Must have been the heat causing craziness in all living critters. There were 3 deer that crossed thru our group during the ride on Saturday. Just cuz its light out does not mean the deer are gone.
  20. Dang everyone beat me to the smart a$$ answers. heat will help if it is loctited in. PB Blaster if it is rusted in. Impact drivers can work wonders.
  21. I am begining to wonder if the rocks have declared war on me.........
  22. First a thanks to Orlin and family for a great week end. My 180 Mile return trip ended up taking 7.5 hours thanks to a jackass in a P/U that took out my bike and the car behind me. My poor bike is now held together with Gorilla tape, and bungee cords. Just before Madison on 14 a P/U had a rock about the size of a softball roll out of the bed and come bouncing down the road. I swerved hard right and thankfully I was able to keep on the road, but the rock just caught the left saddle bag breaking the lid, the lid and the rock then flew up in the air and both hit the windshield of the car behind me. The rock ended up going thru the windshield and ended up in the empty passenger seat of the car. Other than some very rattled nerves there are no injuries. Both of us were very lucky. I had to sit at a McDonalds and eat ice cream till I calmed down enough to ride home. Had I not swerved hard I would have caught that rock square in the front. Seeing what it did to the car, I am sure it would have come right thru the plastic front end of the bike. I did not even know the bike and trailer and could even make a move like that. I guess the practice drills at swerving that I do in a parking lot are worth the effort. Oh and of course the P/U never stopped. I am now in the market for a left saddle bag lid for a 1st gen MKII. Preferably the metallic Maroon to match my 88. I have not inspected the bottom half for damage yet.
  23. Made it home had a graet time, I think everyone did. Thanks again to Orlin and his whole family for putting up with all of us. Even the river monsters seemed to tolerate us ok. And there was no journalist there to document it.......
  24. All packed except for the cooler. I'll pack that in the mornin. Still trying to figure out what I forgot to pack, The whole trunk on the bike is empty. Got all of my "baking" done.
  25. Just a couple inch piece of gas line will do wonders.
