no low beam
Flyinfool replied to reddevilmedic's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
More common is dirty contacts in the hi-lo switch on the handlebars. There is a thread here somewhere on how to clean the switch. I have also seen bad brand new bulbs. -
Darn now you tell me it wont work, and here I have been dimming LEDs with just resistors for over 20 years........ If you look at a set of dual intensity LED tail lights, IE running and brake/turn, there is nothing more than a resistor in line with the wire that connects to the running lights. Yes you can use PWM if you want to spend more money, The tail lights on a Cadillac, and a few other high end cars, use PWM, I hate those because I can see the flash frequency and it drives me nuts. I do not know what resistance the pot is for the in dash dimmer to know if it would be to sensitive or not. RGB LEDs are called RGB because they have 3 elements in the same package. There is a Red, a Green, and a Blue LED in each package. A red and a blue turned on at the same time will give a purple light. Red and green on at the same time gives a yellow light. green and blue at the same time is cyan light. all three at the same time makes white light. by varying the intensities of each color you can get any color you want. http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/c/c2/AdditiveColor.svg/400px-AdditiveColor.svg.png

I was just gonna go there......... I have mine set up with a push button switch and a flashing red LED hooked up thru a RELAY, to remind me that I forgot to turn on the light........

I have had that exact setup for 3 years now, I love it and will never go back to incandescent. I do carry the old halogen bulb as an emergency spare.

Actually LEDs are very dimmable. That is how an LED TV or RGB strips work. I have put dimmers on many LED projects.

Looks good. I was going to make a cooler rack but never thought of a cover for it. The one question I have, Do you have any red running lights visible to the back with the cooler mounted? It looks like the tail light is blocked.

Because the LEDs pull so much less power than the incandescent, I doubt that they would or could fry anything. Are you sure all of the LEDs were lit? LEDs are polarity sensitive and depending on the specific bulbs you have there may be the possibility of putting them in backwards. Backwards will not hurt anything, they just wont light. Most (but not all) LED replacement bulbs that are made for 12V use have a circuit inside of them so that they are not polarity sensitive.

Need Help with Max wattage of Lights
Flyinfool replied to cabreco's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
So I am thinking that for the white LEDs to illuminate the dash, I will want the type that outputs light to the sides, and for the replacements for the idiot lights in the dash, I will want the LEDs that shine forward. It would be a real help if you could post a night pic of your LED dash along with a list of bulbs that you used in the dash. Just what I need, another project........ -
Just check your used ones real close for a tiny dent right on the outside of the bend. If the bike was ever laid down the crash bar bracket can flex back far enough to ding it and then spring back looking like lots of clearance. That tiny little ding will eventually start leaking. I ground the corner off of that bracket to give more clearance to my NEW elbow just in case the bike ever falls over on that side.

Most electrical meters do have a return torsion spring to bring the meter back to zero. The spring usually looks like a spiral wound piece of hair. it is possible that the spring broke or came off one end. There now you have an answer, go eat some ice cream. -
TCI warming up then cr**ping out...
Flyinfool replied to Dano's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
FWIW I put my TCI in the left faring. It stays dry and never sees engine heat. The stock harness is plenty long. I have it attached to the inside wall with Velcro. Might be a cheap thing to try. -
If a bike can not sit for 2 or 3 WEEKS without being run and has a dead battery, there is something wrong with your bike, find it and fix it. A tender is only useful for long term storage of several months at a time. My Yuasa battery is coming to the end of its fifth year, even with Wisconsin winters it has not needed to be on a tender. I just give it a 2 hour charge in the spring the day before my first ride of the year and it is ready to go. I have no problem letting the bike sit for a couple of weeks and it still starts right up. In the early spring and late fall it is common to only get a good day here and there to ride. Once the first saltable snow of winter hits I am done till spring. I did spend the time to find and fix all power drains.

If you are getting absolutely nothing, no lights no radio no cranking no dash display, then it is not a bad safety switch somewhere. It is a power problem. Start by checking the main fuse. Use a meter or test light to make sure there is power on both sides of the main fuse (with the fuse in of course) Disconnect and clean both battery terminals. Disconnect and clean the ground connection. Check for power at each of the fuses, don't probe the fuse itself, probe the actual wire on both sides of the fuse. Once we know the results of this then we can take you to the next step. -
It varies state by state and even between different vehicle types. Some require the plates stay with the vehicle. The seller is not permitted to keep them.

I got burned once. Sold a car, signed the title, did a bill of sale. buyer had cash. Buyer never registered it. 6 Months later, the police were knocking on my door because the car was use in a felony and still in my name. My lawyer bill was 10X what I got for the car. I now meet the seller at the DMV for the sale.

1984 venture royale won't start
Flyinfool replied to sebringjim's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Does it still have the original fuse block with the glass fuses. If so this is a known issue that the fuse clips loose their tension and do not make good contact with the fuse. So even though the fuse id good it still has no connection. Grounds may be in place but are they a good connection? take them apart and clean them up nice and shiny. Same with the battery terminals. -
I picked up a set of H3 HID bulbs to install into my existing driving lights. I will not be able to do this till the SNOW flies.
