  1. OK GL1800 Gold Wing riders I need your help here!!! Looking at possibly buying a GL1800 from Georgia. This will be a hot shot run there and back and was thinking of riding it back home but since its over 1,300 miles one way it would be hard on Peg driving the P/U that far in a short period of time back home so it looks like I'll be trailering the GW back home I need to know the total length of the GL1800 so I'll know if my trailer is long enough or I need to rent one instead?
  2. Well, I did it. Took momma's car in for service and while I was there I walked across the street to a Kaw/Honda/KTM/Triumph dealer to look at the new Thunderbird. (It's not too bad by the way). Anyway, long story short a shiny new Titanium Goldwind caught my eye. I was just looking at it for a minute and the salesman comes up and starts talking, shortly thereafter I'm on a test ride on the GW demo. Went back the next day with the wife to let her try it on and wound up riding my shiny new Wing home. I really enjoyed my Venture, but I was absolutely "shocked" at the difference between it and the wing. In all fairness, the last wing I rode was a 1200 back in the day, but gee, what a ride this new puppy is! All the weight's down low, torque out the wazoo and handling that reminds me of my old FJR. I LOVE it. Wife and I are leaving Sunday for the Blue Ridge parkway on the Wing!! I can't wait!!
  3. To Progressive Insurance Customer Service Department. As a few of you may know, after 10 years on the RSV and waiting for Yama to make a move, I decided to take Snarley Bill up on his offer to sell his 2008 Goldwing. Before purchasing the Wing, I got an online quote from Progressive, my current carrier on the RSV which I thought was very reasonable. Yesterday, I went to see my insurance agent and gave him the info on the Wing. His price for the same coverage from Progressive was a little over $100 more than the online quote. I asked why and he couldn’t say (or wouldn’t) but suggested I call the Progressive Customer Service. So I did. I told Customer Service that I had purchased another bike and wanted to add it to my existing policy, thinking to take advantage of their multi-vehicle discount. After giving them the info, they gave me a price that was still about $30 more than the online quote. I asked why the difference, the rep asked for the quote number and put me on hold. In just a few minutes he was back and explained that my existing policy had renewed in February and they had a PRICE DECREASE in March. The online quote was based on the lower rates. Adding the Wing to my existing policy would put it at the old HIGHER rate. The rep suggested that we write a new policy for the Wing for the lower rate, then after the policy is established call them back and they would combine both bikes on the new policy. By doing this I am supposed to receive a refund from the old policy for the difference in rates (about $15), plus a refund for multi-vehicle policy. He also went through my policy and found another discount I was due and not receiving. Just a few bucks but every little bit helps. Progressive went the extra mile to save me every penny they could, they were fast, friendly, and in no hurry to get me off the phone and move on. I’ve not had to make a claim with them yet, but if their claim service is anything like their Customer Service, then they have a loyal customer for a long time.
  4. Hi, new guy here. Old Wing guy though. Anyway I,ve been sorting out an '87 Venture basket case, and have the dreaded "tank slapper" trouble any time I let go of bar. Its severe and right now when it happens! I'm working through the list of soloutions like bearings springs seals etc. All that aside, the '82 wing has a heavy weight attached to the forks under the fairing, presumably to lessen this trouble on the Honda. Anyone tried to use a Goldwing fork counterweight on a Venture? If so, what happened? It sure looks like it will fit and might give my new ride better manners. What's the list wisdom on this? -87
  5. Went to the Gastown motorcycle show 'n Shine yesterday. Loads of amazing bikes there and so many people came out as the weather was hot. Sorry, no pics...forgot the camera at home. ENNYHOO ... Honda Canada was doing demo rides so Nina & I got to take a spin on a Wing. Now this was the second time I rode a newer Wing but the first time for Nina to ride. Most of the demo was in heavy city traffic but did get to see how it handled on the highway and in corners as well...even a tight 90 degree one at 3 times the posted limit (which was 20 km/h) and I think I dragged something on that one! Well, for those who have one, you know what I'm talkin about here. This bike is nothing short of a breeze to drive. It takes the corners effortlessly. It weaves thru heavy traffic on the freeway without even thinking about it. I looked where I wanted to go and it was if the scoot read my mind because in a flash, I was there. And the POWER!!! It's awesome! Slow speed balance is far superior to our RSMV ... even just coming to a stop ... I could practically come to a full stop and not even put my foot down... Oh yeah, and REVERSE sure was nice getting it back into the parking spot! The downside ... and I only have two. Nina found the seat too "recliner style" ... if that makes any sense. She prefers to sit up straighter but the seat seemed to force her to slouch. ... no biggie... we can fix that. In opposite, I found the seat caused me to sit up straighter ... but that is ok except the handlegrips were lower than I like ... again, no biggie... we can fix that. So, in as much as WE like our RSMV .... sometime before next summer it will most likely be replaced with a WING. See ya at that other "dark side".
  6. I recently had a post about seat beads and somebody suggested trying a gel pad from wal mart instead. I tried the beads and hate them, so I bought the 20 dollar pad. I just got back from sturgis. It is roughly a 350 mile trip one way for me. Since this is the first time I have traveled a good distance with it I was skeptical how long I would be comfy. Well I'll say this, my bike is no longer a 350-400 mile per day bike. I could easily double that now if i wanted. I could sit in the seat all day. So if anybody is having seat trouble (all you rstd'ers like me) give it a try, you might be surprised. 2 of my friends bought them too. 1 rides a vtx, and the other a wing. They guy on the vtx couldnt believe how much they help. The wing rider was comfy anyway, but even he noticed a difference.
  7. Test rode a 2010 Wing today, and whether or not you care here's what I thought. Turned bars to the left to exit parking lot. Oops windshield didn't turn it felt odd, but honestly it was the last time I even noticed the frame mounted fairing. Gave it some gas and immediately needed to shift to second. First gear seems almost unnecessary on this bike. I feel a little cramped. Is it because my feet are under me instead of out front? I can't decide. Hit third and twisted the throttle and I was having fun. It will run. Made a right turn effortlessly. This thing handles like a much smaller bike. I was close to my house so I tried out some curvy roads I knew of nearby and man this thing just rides so "effortless" is the word that keeps coming to mind, I don't feel cramped any more. I like the power. You can leave it in 4th gear and go about any speed you want, and the brakes are amazing. This thing is so quiet and smooooth you can listen to the radio and it's almost like being in a car. That's the part I can't decide if I like or not. I pull up the ramp to get on the interstate and 2 Harleys pass quickly and are probably 100 yards ahead before I get halfway up the ramp. I give it some gas and I'm on their tail in seconds. I'm at 90 but it feels so comfortable I feel like I'm going slower. I get off at the next exit and head back towards the dealership. The way I'm seated it feels like my toes are pointed down, and I wonder if I leaned enough to drag a peg would I scrape the toe of my tennis shoe? I look down and don't think so. I take time to look at all the controls, gauges and storage compartments and think it's kind of cool. Like I'm on some kind of space vehicle. Oops I'm coming up to the dealership and I'm in the wrong lane with several cars in the other lane. No problem a little throttle and I pass 4 cars in nothing flat and change lanes. Uh oh, one of them was a cop, but he doesn't seem to care. Pull back in and park, but wish I could keep it for a day. I don't know if I would want it for my daily rider, but it's definitely on my list. Comfort and speed aren't the only reasons I ride. I like the feel and sound that cruisers have and the Wing doesn't, but I think I could get used to it pretty quick.
  8. OK, not looking to start anything but need to ask. Will be putting my RSTD up for sale soon I hope and then plan to replace her with a 1st gen VR. However, if I am not able to find exactly what i am looking for I am also a bit tempted to take a close look at the Kawi Voyager XII. They don't really look as sexy as the 1st gen however am hearing plenty of good stuff concerning their performance, reliability and economy. Anyone had any experience with these bikes? Would welcome some input. Will probably looking more at the early 90's to say 2000 year models if that helps. HAve also toyed with a wing but it just seems like everyone has to have a wing and additionally they tend to be much higher priced looking apples to apples with the competition. Kinda what drew me to the VR in the first place. Thanks abunch for the input.
  9. i am getting ready to sell my wing, and need some help. not sure what to ask. it is a 2008, premium sound, dark red metallic, about $3000.00 in accessories, 15,000 mi., looks showroom new, been ridden in the rain once, almost new tires, includes extra rear wheel. i was thinking along the lines of $16,000 does this sound like a fair price? bill
  10. I am going to be installing my new trunk spoiler / wing light very shortly. Are there any watchouts or hints to make the installation easier? The instructions are not stellar, and it is not really clear how to make the marking strips that are included stay with the wing while positioning it on the trunk. I would like to hear how you installed yours...
  11. i have a new in the box progressive 460 rear shock for an 1800 wing, i am wanting to sell. it uses the stock wing spring, and preload piston. i bought it to upgrade my rear suspension, but just can't get up the energy to instll it. they list for over $500.00 dollars. can't remember what i paid for it but i'm asking $295.00 including shipping in the contenental usa. pm me if interested. i take paypal. bill
  12. Well it's not exactly the Dark Side - but the new Gold Wing tyre size is close to a lot of car sizes and might JUST be the largest you can fit on a first gen, at 160/80x16, but it also might be too wide. Has anybody tried fitting one ? It has an 80H load rating which is a fair bit higher than the 77H of the heaviest duty 140/90x16 tyres - and as I'll be pulling a trailer tent on the bike and sidecar on the German autobahns, I'll be putting a fair load on the tyre in hot weather. Has anybody any experience on this ? I hope so because I need to splash out on another tyre in the next week or so to be ready to travel.
  13. I'd like to extend an invation to my Venture Rider board friends, to an event that I've put together. It's based around the members of the GL1800 board which I'm also a member of. We Gold Wing riders would love to have you RSV riders come out. The area is some of the best riding in Pennsylvania. http://gl1800riders.com/forums/showthread.php?t=238966&highlight=renovo Bill Morphy http://www.Mic-Mutes.com
  14. decided i want to retire again so i'm doing a major down size to 2 or3 bikes. after i get rid of my zx14, i think the wing is going to hit the road. my ultimate goal is to end up with my v-star 1300, majesty scooter, and nomad. any one want a choice wing with all the goodies keep mine in mind. it's one decked out beauty and the price will be right. bill
  15. here is a great on line parts supplier for the gold wing, www.directlineparts.com/ they have great service and prices. i bought most all my wing stuff from them. they also cover other metric bikes.
  16. if you have an 1800 wing and need a new rear tire. check ebay i bought a brand new wheel and tire mounted and balanced, new swingarm, rear end, and disc with caliper for $ 227.00 plus shipping. i calculated the total new cost at over $3000.00. russleville honda does trike conversions and have a pile of them all the time. tom, you may want to pick one up when you get your bike. it gives you a brand new tire and wheel ready to mount when you need it.
  17. Wing Ding starts on July 1st in Des Moines. I know it is for Goldwings but with all the bikes and vendors someone from this forum might be interested in attending.
  18. looks like the new goldwing tech section is starting to roll. anyone on here that has a wing or is thinking about getting one, check it out. the good info is starting to roll in. eck posted some great info. don't know if i could lay my wing down to change the wheel in the rear, but lots of wing owners do. there's a great movie of a guy doing it in the tech section, thanks to eck.
  19. I was going North today on the Blue Ridge Pkwy and spotted a Southbound purple Venture around 3:45. I'm not positive about the color as it was quick and shady. I'm just wondering if it was a member. I also met a nice guy on the BRP on a Goldwing. We asked him to take a picture of us next to my bike, and he said "Hey, it's my old bike." He had traded in one identical to mine on the wing. He was very happy with the Wing and about had me talked into trading for one.
  20. I was at the bike dealer today and met a very interesting couple. They rode 2 up all over the world on a gold wing . He gave me his website. Check it out. http://www.wheezyrider.com/
  21. An article I wandered across today instead of actually working. It stated that the new wing wont be built for at least a year or 2 so they are in a holding pattern over at Honda as well. http://blog.ridermagazine.com/2010/05/12/new-honda-gold-wing-news/ Brian
  22. rod

    Old Goldwing

I have a friend that had his starter solenoid melt down on his 86 1200 wing. Does any one have the wiring diagram? Thanks Rod
  23. I thought this was kind of neat idea, http://www.ngwclub.com/gallery/v/wingmans/frenchy1/Susans-trike/ I have an old wing like that. thinking of converting it this way for around town:big-grin-emoticon: Jeff
  24. barend

    1200 wing

Friend of mine bought a 1200 wing, went through the carbs and had a shop do the same. He says it still has a slight hesitation and the shop says they can't get rid of it either. He says the bike runs great with a little choke?? Any of you have any ideas on what might be going on with his bike? Thanks!
  25. i've been hanging around the best oil sight on the net. for a couple of years, www.bobtheoilguy.com . i have been using mobil1 10w-30 extended performance energy conserving in my wing for the last 7000 miles. i'm using 4000mi. oci's on it. i will get an oil analysis in 1000 miles to see how this oil fares in my wing. most guys are using 8000 mi. oci, on the wing. i just can't go that long. in my v-twins, v-star and nomad, i switched to rotella t 15w-40 cj4, at 3000 mi. oci, because of the higher ppm of zddp. i am going to have an analysis done on both of them after two oil changes to flush them of any remnents of the other oil that was in them. as soon as i get the info back i will post it. these three bikes are a good cross section of different bikes to find out what works best in motorcycle engines. since oil is my all time favorite subject, i have to know. i will be using blackstone laboratories. this may take awhile. according to my research so far these should be the best oil choice for these three bikes. i am expecting very good wear no's in all 3 bikes. time will tell.
