  1. So I'm about to change the Rad Fluid On My 91 VR. 1) I'm guessing that the Rad Plug just above the oil filter is where I drain the rad fluid. Is that the lowest point for the rad fluid or might there another place also? 2) I'm plan to put the plug back in and fill with water and drain again a couple 2 or 3 times? 3) With it full of just water I plan on running the engine so to circulate the water through out the entire cooling system to get every last drop of old anti freeze out. 4) After I flush the Rad for the last time, I'm going to install Sky_Docs Rad Drain up grade Kit. 5) I've read that any anti freeze today will be just fine. But to stay away from silcone based anti freeze. I plan on getting regular Prestone premix 50/50. 6) How much Watercooler additive do I put in. I'm planning on a summer visit to Las Vegas and the surrounding areas this Late June / early July. Any suggestions?
  2. Hello from Vancouver, Canada: Just a little over a year ago, I purchased a gauge set from Ponch (tach, oil pressure and water temp) for my ’07 Venture. Unfortunately, life got in the way and I didn’t start installing the set until just this week. With the dash now apart - and cut, I've run into a snag which I hope someone can help me fix. Specifically, I have the Clarion CD Changer installed on my bike. As part of its installation, the multi-pin connector was inserted into the green-tagged cable on the Cassette deck. With the Cassette now "toast", where do I plug the CD connector? Is the grey-tagged cable which used to link the deck to the radio? I'm hoping that's the answer. Another challenge: my old Craftsman 7.2 v drill is too large to fit between the bottom of the upper fairing frame and the inner fairing wall (re drilling new holes in the former cassette frame and gauge set brackets). What size of drill is recommended? Would a new 18v or 20v cordless unit be of sufficient slim profile to do the trick? How about a Dremel tool? And last but not least: Since a water temp gauge is part of my cluster, is it best to wrap the capillary water tube in layer of thin insulation since its bound to get hot? If yes, what material is recommended? That's everything. My thanks, in advance, to any and all who can answer these questions and help me get my RSV back on the road. There are highways waiting for me! In appreciation, Eric S. "alta55rsv"
  3. Is Oiled cooled engines have similar life expectancy as water cooled engines. Know any draw backs to oil cooled engines. Just doing some research for my son who is looking at purchasing a Ducati when he returns from his Deployment.
  4. As i was cleaning the bike today I pulled out a very small hose that is connected to the water pump but was not connected to anything on the other end. It's shown on page 5-14 of the manual connected to the pump is this a weep hole for the seal or should it be connected somewhere else. I just put it back down beside the frame where it was.
  5. It seems I now have the duty of Well Tender on my property. Last good man quit and the small time drilling company has said from the main line tap is my responsibility. I guess since I am a free gas customer not making them any money it's my problem. The old gas well was drilled back in the sixties with an old spudder rig. I remember back as a kid she would roar when you blew the water drip on ocassion.Nowdays I blow the water valve weekly through the winter months and she has little pressure and not much volume.I bet the main line pressure is less then 50 psi.One of my questions is can I use a air guage, compression tester, or buy something from the local hardware store to check line pressure at the input and output of the high pressure regulators? Last winter the old well was making more water then gas and we fought gas on and off for weeks before getting the company out to swab the well. My well runs three houses on my property Dad's,Mine, and my Daughters so I maintain the plumbing to all three. From the pickup tap located 50 ft from the well we go into a small seperator tank with a mix of antifreeze in it. The output of that tank goes into another small overflow tank the one with the blow valve on top. From there we are tee connected to the two high pressure regulators.Mine is the blue high low regulators on the left. The other high regulator goes to my dauthers house via the yellow line going under ground. Her low pressure regulators is at her house before entrance. Dad's low regulator is after her tap in the picture.Don't laugh at the plumbing in the picture I need to do some cleanup work I know. When things are really bad like last winter the regulators freeze off daily. They had to be taken apart and cleaned by our local well tender last year who also serviced the water seperator tank. This year guess thats my responsibility. All this Marcellus drilling in WV have the local well tenders running to the Big Money Companys for Jobs.I had to reset Dad's regulator yesterday. It was a cold night followed by a quick warm period during the day and the regulator shut off.Mine has been going off about twice a week since Thanksgiving. http://i1132.photobucket.com/albums/m580/ggrabose/Falls%20Mill/PC250974.jpg
  6. Just as I was trying to calm the water with an edit LOL Oh well..............
  7. TURPENTINE VS. HOLY WATER A little boy was sitting on the footpath with a bottle of turpentine. He was shaking it up and watching all the bubbles. A priest came along and asked the little boy what he had. The little boy said, 'This is the most powerful liquid in the world; it's called turpentine.' The priest said, 'No, the most powerful liquid in the world is Holy Water. If you rub it on a pregnant woman's belly, she'll pass a healthy baby.' The little boy replied, 'If you rub turpentine on a cat's butt, he'll pass a Harley Davidson
  8. Well the wife & I have decided to list the farm and move to town. Mixed emotions I guess. Babe has raised a cow herd here on the farm over the last 20 years, with all the cows having names & each with their own personality. Hard to take them to the cattle auction, but that's the reality of the cow business. I have lived here on the farm longer than any other place in my life. Lots of loves & fond memories of the 20 years here. It will be nice to open the garage door & ride the bike on cement or pavement without riding a mile & a half on dirt or mud. Lots more days able to ride without the worry of rain making the road to the house muddy! I will have to relearn to go into the house every time I need to make water. That will be harder than it might sound to you town guys, as here on the farm you just make water where ever you are. No more worries about the septic overflowing, the well quitting, the electric line losing connectivity, (as it did yesterday) or being snowbound for several days (2006). I will keep you posted.

Wedding plans take care of themselves. Chocolate is just another snack... You can be President. You can never be pregnant. You can wear a white T-shirt to a water park. You can wear NO shirt to a water park. Car mechanics tell you the truth. The world is your urinal. You never have to drive to another gas station restroom because this one is just too icky. You don't have to stop and think of which way to turn a nut on a bolt. Same work, more pay. Wrinkles add character. Wedding dress $5000. Tux rental-$100. People never stare at your chest when you're talking to them. New shoes don't cut, blister, or mangle your feet. One mood all the time. Phone conversations are over in 30 seconds flat. You know stuff about tanks. A five-day vacation requires only one suitcase. You can open all your own jars. You get extra credit for the slightest act of thoughtfulness. If someone forgets to invite you, He or she can still be your friend. Your underwear is $8.95 for a three-pack. Three pairs of shoes are more than enough.. You almost never have strap problems in public. You are unable to see wrinkles in your clothes.. Everything on your face stays its original color. The same hairstyle lasts for years, even decades. You only have to shave your face and neck. You can play with toys all your life. One wallet and one pair of shoes -- one color for all seasons. You can wear shorts no matter how your legs look. You can 'do' your nails with a pocket knife. You have freedom of choice concerning growing a mustache. You can do Christmas shopping for 25 relatives On December 24 in 25 minutes. ___________________________________ Men Are Just Happier People NICKNAMES If Laura, Kate and Sarah go out for lunch, they will call each other Laura, Kate and Sarah. If Mike, Dave and John go out, they will affectionately refer to each other as Fat Boy, Bubba and Wildman. EATING OUT When the bill arrives, Mike, Dave and John will each throw in $20, even though it's only for $32.50. None of them will have anything smaller and none will actually admit they want change back. When the girls get their bill, out come the pocket calculators. MONEY A man will pay $2 for a $1 item he needs. A woman will pay $1 for a $2 item that she doesn't need but it's on sale. BATHROOMS A man has six items in his bathroom: toothbrush and toothpaste, shaving cream, razor, a bar of soap, and a towel. The average number of items in the typical woman's bathroom is 337. A man would not be able to identify more than 20 of these items. ARGUMENTS A woman has the last word in any argument. Anything a man says after that is the beginning of a new argument. FUTURE A woman worries about the future until she gets a husband. A man never worries about the future until he gets a wife. MARRIAGE A woman marries a man expecting he will change, but he doesn't. A man marries a woman expecting that she won't change, but she does. DRESSING UP A woman will dress up to go shopping, water the plants, empty the trash, answer the phone, read a book, and get the mail. A man will dress up for weddings and funerals. NATURAL Men wake up as good-looking as they went to bed. Women somehow deteriorate during the night. OFFSPRING Ah, children. A woman knows all about her children. She knows about dentist appointments and romances, best friends, favorite foods, secret fears and hopes and dreams. A man is vaguely aware of some short people living in the house. THOUGHT FOR THE DAY A married man should forget his mistakes. There's no use in two people remembering the same thing!
  10. Looks like it is getting close to time to replace the hot water heater. It is still heating just fine but apparently is full of mineral deposits, rust, etc. My wife notice last weekend that the hot water was muddy looking. I've lost count of how many times I've drained and flushed and drained and flushed and drained and flushed. It take forever even though I replace the drain valve with a straight through ball valve. Even with the ball valve installed and the vent opened, it takes a long time to flush. I've actually got it running fairly clear now but still no perfect and I think I will need to replace it soon. It is about 17 years old. This is an 80 gallon AO Smith electric heater. I've been looking around and have somewhat narrowed it down to a Whirlpool 80 gallon and a GE 80 gallon. The Whirlpool has dual 4500 watt elements and a 12 year warranty. Top and bottom elements are stainless steel. The GE has dual 5500 watt elements but only the top one is stainless steel for some reason. They both have 12 year warranties. All that I have looked at have 4500 watt elements except for the GE. The Whirlpool is $619.00 and the GE is $729.00. I'm leaning towards the Whirlpool even though the GE has higher wattage elements. I've never had a problem with running out of hot water so really don't know that the bigger elements are a big deal. They both have high energy factors, about 92 I think. A tankless heater is not an option for me. There just aren't any electric tankless heaters that are equivalent to an 80 gallon tank. The closest I have found was rated about the same as a 40 gallon tank. So, I KNOW we have people here who are experts in just about anything that we have questions about. What say you?
  11. Hey KIC, Welcome to the VR.ORG Forum, you're home brother! The 1989 VR is the last year of the "Old Style" TCI in 1990, Yamaha went to the "improved version". This should not be a problem, plenty of them out there! (1984 to 1989 all fit) Check all three brake rotors for "bluing", which means that they have been overheated from a dragging Caliper. The left front and rear Rotor are not available from Yamaha any more, and were spendy when they were. This bike is also the last year that came with the "Two Brush" starter motor. 1990 to 1993 had the "4 brush starter". Run the bike for a while, shut it off, and try to restart it. If the starter drags, you will need to address this issue once you have purchased it. I have seen these bikes get 300,000 miles with proper care, so at 65,000 miles I would have a good close look at the front fork seals, (thin, black oil ring above the lower aluminum fork tube) be sure to check BOTH tubes! Also steering head bearings will start to be an issue at this mileage point, check them closely. Check the coolant overflow bottle which is located under the "door" above the CB Radio on the upper right side of the fairing. If the bottle is empty, then you have a "weeper" coolant system. Have a close look at the "fish eye" glass in the front Brake and Clutch Master Cylinders, if the fluid is not clear like water, (cola colored) then this service you speak of that was done 2K ago, is BS! Since you can't see into the rear Master Cylinder, I would "draw" a sample of the brake fluid from the rear reservoir and check the color. (looking for clear color here) Remove the false tank cover and remove the fuse box lid, if any fuses are missing, or are "jumpered" with wire, then this is a major issue, but can be repaired. Remove the air box cover and check the air box for engine oil in the bottom of the box, and bugs and dirt in the air filter folds. Put the bike on the center stand and roll both tires, listening for dragging calipers and dry bearings. Sit down behind the rear of the bike, and hold on to the chrome side bag guard, and place your right foot on the rear tire. (bike in 1st gear helps) Push side ways on the tire firmly, you are looking for the tire and swing arm to move sideways, meaning the swing arm bushings and or bearings are shot! If this bike has spent most of it's life in AZ., then it has seen some pretty high coolant temps. Look under the water pump, at the weep hole, (right side of bike, in front of and below the foot brake) for signs of anti-freeze staining or leakage. While you are there, look at the front of the water pump where the "Elbow" exits the water pump and turns left to the Thermostat Housing, MAKE SURE that the engine crash bar has not cut a gash in this plastic elbow! If there is a gash on the plastic elbow, then most likely, this bike has been down on the right side at some point. Check right side fairing corner for cracking. With the bike on the center stand, start the bike and let it run until the electric fan comes on. If the temp gage gets close to the red area with no fan turn on, (fan should come on at 3/4 on temp gage+/- a bit) then this bike has been ridden HOT in stop and go traffic. While on the right side of the bike, look below the water pump for the "oil level sight glass". With the bike not running, the oil level must be half way up the sight glass. If the oil level is too high and there is no oil level line, then don't return to the dealer that did the 2K service. If the sight glass is so "foggy" that you can't see the oil level at all, this is a sign that the oil changes have been neglected. Everything mentioned here can be corrected. The point of this inspection is to see if the current owner is being honest with you about the condition of the bike. If everything checks out OK, with NO broken plastic, then this is a $3500.00 bike. If you can't see the oil level, it has at least one blued rotor, the water pump elbow has a gash in it, and the right side fairing has damage at the corner, and the coolant overflow bottle is dry, then this is an $800.00 bike, and will be a $2700.00 bike when you repair everything. Because the owner wants to sell this motorcycle, he/she will say "anything" to make the sale. Print this sheet off, check everything mentioned, deduct for the issues found, and if he is still firm on the price once you have proved that the 2K service is BS. Then WALK AWAY! In my honest opinion, paying $800.00 for an 89'VR and putting $1700.00 into it to cherry it out is a "fun winter project"! Paying $3500.00 for the same bike and putting $1700.00 into it just to get it to stop and go properly is getting RIPPED OFF! My thoughts, for what they are worth. Again, welcome to the VR.ORG forum KIC, you've got some "homework" to do my friend. Earl
  12. glass of wine To my friends who enjoy a glass of wine...And those who don't and are alwaysseen with a bottle of water in their hand. As Ben Franklin said:In wine there is wisdom,In beer there is freedom,In water there is bacteria. In a number of carefully controlled trials,Scientists have demonstrated that if we drink1 litre of water each day,At the end of the year we would have absorbedMore than 1 kilo of Escherichia coli, (E. Coli) - bacteriaFound in feces. In other words, we are consuming 1 kilo of poop. However,We do NOT run that risk when drinking wine & beer(or tequila, rum, whiskey or other liquor)Because alcohol has to go through a purification processOf boiling, filtering and/or fermenting. Remember:Water = Poop,Wine = Health. Therefore, it's better to drinkwine and talk stupid, than to drink water and befull of sh_t. There is no need to thank me for this valuable information:I'm doing it as a public service!
  13. I ( in error ) decided a long time ago not to do a bucket list. I've changed my mind - after looking around Australia, I've decided that I want to do some fresh water fishing in Australia, then perhaps the next day deep water ocean fishing. What makes this doable is that it only costs just less than $100 US for a 6 hour charter for either. Of course the 27 hour flight could be a pain but that's why someone invented Bud Light.
  14. I ride an '07 RSTD - i was cleaning the bike today - had seat and both side covers off - i was using a mild cleaning solution in a spray bottle, chased with another spray bottle of clean water - i spritzed both side, cleaned and blew excess water away - i also sprayed behind the rear jugs and blew water away....well you may have guessed that when i went to start it, the bike is running one two cylinders - the right rear pipes are definitely hot and the front two pipes are cold. i followed the plugs wires on rear jugs to the coils, which is where i sprayed a fair amount of cleaner and water but those cylinders are firing. i can't locate the coils for the front cylinders (even looked in service manual). i have not done any real troubleshooting yet but hoped someone may have experienced the same issue and might save me needless time - any suggestions are appreciated.
  15. I need some help. I am trying to diagnose a problem that just developed with out having to tear the engine apart looking for something that I don't know what I am looking for. Yesterday, I was on the freeway going about fifty to sixty mph, getting up to speed. While at that speed, I heard a sound that SEEMS to be coming from the clutch and/or water pump area. It kind of sounds like loose metal rattling around. Pretty loud. Maybe a sound that it would make if it was starving of coolant or oil. When I get up to 70 mph, it seems to stop, although I can't tell if I just can't hear it because of the wind. This morning I took her out and the sound goes away when I pull in the clutch. But while the clutch is disengaged, if I rev the engine I still hear the noise. I hear no noise at all when it is idling in the driveway or going slowly. It shifts gears fine. I'm thinking it could be a water or oil pump issue and/or a clutch issue. I just don't know. I know I probably haven't given you enough to go on yet... but any ideas or things that I can check would be GREATLY appreciated!!!!! 1998 Royal Star TC XVZ13AT I really thank you for your time and thoughts!! 16. I am at home recovering from my injury's and my friend comes over to cut my lawn, when he is done he goes to wash up but there is no water' come to find out my water bill was due while I was in the hospital for a whole 28$ and since it wasn't paid 10 days after due they shut off my water, needless to say I am furious.
  17. Come on guys for a limited time you can have my water front property. It will be water front property in 10 hours so act now. These are picturess of the lovely fishing town in 2007 . Its a steal and will only last this weekend so jump on it ow!! http://i257.photobucket.com/albums/hh221/muaymendez/DSCF1946.jpg
  18. Any A/C experts? Our 14year old Friedrich giant wall AC crapped out last night, or so we think. It sounded like the compressor shut off. The fan was still running. Nothing i did could get the compressor back on. The filter was packed clogged though. Gave up, went to sleep. Today, no power. Main breaker tripped. Put that back on and the unit turns on and now the compressors back on. However, for 10 mins, foamy looking water was pouring out of the rear of the unit. This stopped and all seems ok. although the air doesnt seem as cool as it was, its not getting warmer after being back on for 2hours so far. Anyone have an idea what happaned here?
  19. Hi All, I bought my '90 VR a couple of weeks ago. The guy I bought it from only had it for a couple of months and said he was out for a ride when it blew a radiator hose. He thought it needed a new head gasket. Anyhow I bought it not going. (I like making things work). I have tested the compression and got 90,100,110 and 165 psi. Added a bit of oil and all four went to 240psi (pretty high isn't it??) I pulled the motor out and have got the heads off. A fair bit of carbon build up on the pistons, top of cylinders and heads. I noticed that the line to the coolant drain was full of sediment and so was the water jacket around Number 1 cylinder. I guess it has been a long time since anyone has given the old girl a good flush out. I've ordered new rings, gaskets and hoses plus anything else needed and now waiting for them to arrive in Australia. I have had a good look around this site and I'm trying to figure out how the oil got into the coolant system. I suspect that the oil seal near the water pump shaft may have let the oil into the waterpump area. there was no water in the oil sump. I've ordered a new seal and mechanical waterpump seal. The bike is faded blue so I hope it'll go fast when I get her back together. It's got 46K on the clock and was imported to Australia from Canada about 6 years ago. Is there any other areas I should check before I start the rebuild??
  20. I've just pulled the trigger on the complete set, plus the passenger armrests. Should be here in a couple of days. I liked the reviews, and I like that it's Canadian made. When my wife finds out I've spent considerably more $ on a machine I justified purchasing on the savings in fuel costs, there may be blood in the water. Ah well. Maybe if I explain that the new seat and arm rests are to make it more comfortable for her to ride with me...
  21. Will they pass it off as lemonade?? http://www.news4jax.com/news/28799431/detail.html
  22. I can't believe how fortunate I am. Before leaving for Cody, the AC started leaking water on the floor but I couldn't find the starting point. I was sure it was condensation water but from where? After we left, I got a call from our son saying that the washing machine had quit rinsing and spinning. I gave him some ideas but said I would deal with it when I got home if they didn't work. Wednesday, in Cody, my headlight/instrument panel lights stopped working. The fuse checked out so.... maybe the starter cut out switch or the CMU? I'll deal with that when I get home, the bike still runs properly. Then Friday, we rode as far as Tremonton, Utah. After a quick bite at McD, Jan's bike wouldn't start. Jump the bike, it runs; disconnect the cables, it dies. Luckily we were traveling with great friends and so we loaded the bike in the trailer and finished the trip home. The resolutions: Jan's bike - started with the battery and found the neg cable lose. Tightened it up and the bike fired right up!! One down, three to go. My bike - double checked the fuse, good. Checked the voltage at the fuse holder, nothing. The fuse holder clamp was broken! Put a jumper wire across the fuse holder....headlight works!! I did the fuse block upgrade, all is well. Two down. AC - Started checking to find the source of the water, touched the condensation plate drain pipe, it moved....shouldn't do that, should it? Pulled the pipe and made sure it was clear (cleared a minor obstruction when I blew through it). A little PVC glue to re-assemble the pipe. Number three fixed!! Washing Machine - Don't know much about washing machines....Call the Man. My wallet is a little lighter now. He replaced the defective cold water inlet valve and now we can have clean clothes. All in all, very lucky! Dave
  23. Found HWH leaking in the garage this morning. Its the original from the house and 7 years old. Single element 40 gallon electric. Supplies sufficient hot water for our needs (2 adults only) Any options that would provide any real savings in electricity, or just go out and buy the same type?? Thanks
  24. Manure : In the 16th and 17th centuries, everything had to be transported by ship and it was also before the invention of commercial fertilizers, so large shipments of manure were quite common. It was shipped dry, because in dry form it weighed a lot less than when wet, but once water (at sea) hit it, not only did it become heavier, but the process of fermentation began again, of which a by product is methane gas of course. As the stuff was stored below decks in bundles you can see what could (and did) happen. Methane began to build up below decks and the first time someone came below at night with a lantern, BOOOOM! Several ships were destroyed in this manner before it was determined just what was happening After that, the bundles of manure were always stamped with the instruction ' Stow high in transit ' on them, which meant for the sailors to stow it high enough off the lower decks so that any water that came into the hold would not touch this volatile cargo and start the production of methane. Thus evolved the term ' S.H.I.T ', (Stow High In Transit) which has come down through the centuries and is in use to this very day. You probably did not know the true history of this word. Neither did I. I had always thought it was a golf term.
  25. Well, the Missouri River is doing it's best to leave the riverbed and wander where it wants in Omaha and surrounding areas. They are closing parts of I-29 North of Council Bluffs, IA as the water is up to the shoulder. It's making things interesting for sure. A few shots of the river around the downtown area.
