  1. 01 RSV clutch upgrade issue. So. I followed the instructions (or so I thought, I guess) replaced the half friction disc with the full one, removed the retaining wire and the spring/washer deeley, put it all back together as instructed (lining up all of the 'notches' in the friction discs, etc). Torqued the outer ring with the 6 bolts to the required 70 in-lb, re-installed gasket and cover and now my clutch lever is so stiff I can't even move it with both hands. Mind you, I tried with one hand and it didn't budge - I didn't squeeze much harder than that because I didn't want to break anything. What the crap. Any suggestions on what to check or what went wrong? I am baffled and a little honked.
  2. Has anybody done the upgrade to R1 brakes on a 2nd gen? I went with stainless brake llines shortly after I bought my bike, 'cause the brakes felt awful "soft" after my FJR and Duc. The stainless lines really helped, but I am curious about going to the R1 brakes. They "should" help quite a bit. Ideas?
  3. Well I just did the clutch upgrade on my '09 RSTD with about 1700 miles on it. Took about 2 hours altogether including cleanup and pulling the discs out after realizing I left the washer in there. Good thing I checked the excellent writeup on the site to make sure I was on the right track. All in all it was not to hard but I did worry when I got to the wire, was not sure how to get that out without breaking it. The half disc was hard to get out because it is in there so deep. Any way the clutch pull is a little harder as people have said. I think the friction zone is slightly larger but it engages later on in the travel. I think that is a function of it grabbing better. Any way time will tell. Not sure how you would be able to get that wire back in there if you were to go back to stock. David
  4. I completed installing the PCW clutch upgrade kit last night and it went together very easily as others have stated. The clutch appears to be working and there is absolutely no slipping. However, I have a question about the friction zone. With the original spring it seemed that the clutch started grabbing when the lever was about 1/2 way out and there was 3/4 of an inch or so of friction zone. With the upgrade it seems that the friction zone is only about the last 1/4 inch of lever travel before the lever is free. It makes me wonder if the clutch is fully engaging. I still have about 1/4 inch of free travel in the lever after fully engaged. Is this consistent with other's experience? Dennis
  5. For those that are interested I am selling my 83 on Ebay. It has the fuse box upgrade and comes with the headlight upgrade (not installed). I had it painted last year and based on comments I think it looks pretty slick. Has good Metzler 880s on it. Not perfect by any stretch, but should be a good value for someone. Lots of chrome and lights added. If you know someone it should make a great tour bike for a great value for someone. Tried to put it on this site in the classifieds and submitted it twice but it has not shown up. Thanks, Bob
  6. Ok....been getting the warnings lately that some programs will no longer be supported with Internet Explorer 7 so it's time to jump to IE8. No biggie right? I download the upgrade file for my Windows XP and go to install it. Dang...... I have the file BOIE8_MSCOM_XP.EXE as the upgrade but when I go to install it I get the message "BOIE8_MSCOM_XP.EXE is not a valid Win32 application" I spent some time on the Windows site and checked that I have all the needed updates installed on my system and it looks like I have everything I need. I can get around a computer pretty well if I know where I'm going but I'm a bit stumped on this one. Any suggestions? Mike
  7. I saw a post about this from a few years ago. Just wondering if anyone has done a full on stage one upgrade? The baron big air kit lets it breath and give you more fuel and a full exhaust upgrade (2") will finish it off. http://www.baronscustom.com/catalog/display/254/index.html
  8. I got one of those Skydoc clutch upgrade kits and thought since I was going into the clutch I would see if I could get the dealer to get me a new "I" basket to try to quieten the Jensen mobile chirp down some and do it all at once. I have a new I basket and convinced the dealer to let me install it (cause I do not want some Jack Ass messing around with my bike). Now I have to get the old clutch basket back to him pretty soon. Poor Skydoc is having a rough time with the clutch springs he got for all of us and I know now he probably wishes he would have not got his self into all that... I know he is doing all he can. I know I could probably use my original and the .60 spring but...I have already sent my .60 spring back to him for replacement when the replacements arrive. I was wondering if I could do the Skydoc clutch upgrade (pull the 1/2 disc out and replace with the full disc...trash the extra parts etc.) except use my original spring...and install the I basket so I can get it back to the dealer. I do not have any slippage so far on my clutch, only 17000 miles on the bike. I just wanted to make sure I do not have any slipping in the future. When Skydoc gets the new springs in...all I have to do is pop the new spring on to complete the upgrade. Help me out here...the dealer called again today wanting the old clutch basket back...so I need to move pretty quickly on this. If I have to swap out the I basket and put all the original parts in...that is ok...just trying to optimize my work on this clutch. Also planning some big trips here soon...so I do not want this clutch to go south on me while on the road. No risk taking here. Please I need some advice here...
  9. After reading the Clutch Upgrade in the tech section, I have a few questions. Bike is 2007 RSV with 29,000 miles 1. If left stock, how many friction plates? I gather the upgrade is 6? 2. Is the "wire" something that has a part number and comes from the stealer? 3. Can a heaveier spring be put in with out the entire upgrade and would that even be worth it? 4. What is the cost of the keeping stock parts vs. the upgrade? Thanks guys.
  10. Been working this all winter. Danos engage clutch mod, Shydocs Clutch upgrade and drain kit, LED running lights, Sheep skin backrest cover, 4 brush starter, repaired or rebuilt EVERY cracked tab, epoxied the fuel tank, new brake pads, added chrome panels to side covers, 4 1/2" driving lights with amber lenses, did interior of trunk...........ah there too much to list! Anyway I got some miles tonight. Felt real good. Yes it did. Gonna be a good summer. Thanks to all the guys that provided upgrade, kits, parts and advice for me during this project. And thanks to Dingy for his tools. The clutch upgrade kit was a huge improvement. Rolling down the Interstate at 75 mph and give it a twist and it's just jumps right on up there. No more slip. Nada.
  11. To EVERYONE that Just Received A Second Gen. Clutch Spring Upgrade Kit! It has been brought to my attention that the Clutch Diaphragm Spring in the Second Gen. Clutch Spring Upgrade Kit is thinner and produces less clutch gripping pressure that the stock spring. Because this Diaphragm comes in a sealed package, I did not think to open one up until I was notified. IT IS IN FACT THINNER THAT THE STOCK SPRING, and is not the spring that has been shipped in earlier batches of the kit. I received 29 of these springs and suspect that the last batch has been packaged incorrectly. If you have not installed the upgrade kit yet, PLEASE DO NOT INSTALL THIS KIT UNLESS YOU CAN MEASURE THE THICKNESS WHICH SHOULD BE .070". If the spring is measuring .055 to .060" thick DO NOT INSTALL THIS KIT. Because it is the weekend, I can't get in touch with the vendor who supplied this part but you better believe that come Monday morning I will be bending his ear about this issue. For any one that has done the install already, I will furnish a replacement spring and new clutch cover gasket with shipping at my cost for your trouble. In the future I will open and measure EVERY spring that I receive before it is shipped. I apologize for this problem and will do all I can to take care of it as soon as possible. Another short term "fix" is to Double your old and the new Clutch Diaphragm Spring until I can get more springs that are the correct thickness. I have REMOVED the Ads from the classifieds until this issue is resolved and like I said earlier in this post I will measure every spring before I ship it from now on. Again, I apologize, Earl
  12. Sometime in the near future, I will be making some major changes to the VentureRider site. This is not something that I want to do but am pretty much being forced to do. This site is a conglomeration of several different software packages that are somewhat integrated together so that a single login works from the home page, the forum, classifieds, etc. It is a common occurrence that I have to upgrade the software from time to time. Sometimes it is to add new features but it is often because new security vulnerabilities are discovered. Once they are discovered, it is not long before the hackers and spammer find out about them and then we are open to such attacks. The problem is though that often if an upgrade is required in one area, for example the forum, then it causes problems with other areas such as the home page. So it's a chain effect, an upgrade here ends up requiring an upgrade to other parts of the site. Often it is after an upgrade is already done before you find the problems that it caused in other areas. An example is this last upgrade where an upgrade to the forum software caused such things as the "Mark Forums Read" and etc. to stop working on the home page and also the side menu here. That is because the side menu here on the forum is actually part of the home page software. It all gets so confusing. While it can be irritating and cause a lot of work and debugging each time, the problem is that the people who wrote the software that I am using on the home page appear to have pretty much given up that business. They are no longer offering upgrades or support for the software. This last little change and the problems that it caused created some real headaches and several hours to figure out what code needed to be changed so that it all worked together again. As more changes are made to the forum, the problem will get much worse. The bottom line is that I am going to have to completely redo the VentureRider home page from scratch. Remove the current software and integration and come up with a new solution. Over the next week or two I will be looking at various options and making a decision on what will the be best route forward. There may be some changes that some of you like and there may be some things that go away that some of you will really miss. It can't be helped and I promise that I will try my best to retain all the current features that I can. The good news is that the actual discussion forum will remain pretty much the same. The decision that I make for the home page will determine if there are any changes at all to the forum. If there are changes, it will still be the same basic software and no changes in the way that it actually works on your end. Also, we should not lose any posts. The only thing that we might lose, at least temporarily, are some of the custom features that I have added over the years. If so, I will add them back as soon as possible. Well that's the story. It is not going to happen today or this weekend but will be happening soon. This is such a big change that when I do it, I will very likely have to shut down the site for at least a couple of hours. I will give advance notice before doing that.
  13. has anyone found a way to upgrade the stereo system on rsv?
  14. OK folks....just a little heads up here. I've decided to upgrade our server for VentureRider.org The hosting company is running a special and I need to take advantage of it. For very little more money, we will double our disk space, double our monthly bandwidth and almost double our ram. In addition to faster processors and etc. This should be fairly seamless with little or NO downtime. That's my hope anyway. I'll let you know just before I pull the trigger.
  15. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=260367822392&viewitem=&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWAX%3AIT Basically is this a even better version of the upgraded stator or is that all marketing hype and I should get the one from one of the sources listed here? I'm spoiling the bike now that I have a new job. I figure that if I have it apart, I might as well upgrade the stator as I am upgrading the Voltage Reg so I dont have to worry about it on the road this spring and summer...
  16. I have an '06 Midnight Venture. It does not have the "pillow" seat. It has a "leather" Venture seat. Is my seat an optional seat, an upgrade or downgrade.??? I'm confused.
  17. Picked up another VR in June and showed up at Earl's (skydoc) Earl helped put her back into service with carb synch, rebuilt front calipers, rebuilt rear caliper, f/r pads, mounted new tires f/r, radiator drain upgrade, and a general going over. Heck he even took it for a ride and had it PA state inspected......... So here are a couple pics I took this evening.. http://i177.photobucket.com/albums/w203/davepa/IMG_0651.jpg http://i177.photobucket.com/albums/w203/davepa/IMG_0654.jpg http://i177.photobucket.com/albums/w203/davepa/IMG_0652.jpg http://i177.photobucket.com/albums/w203/davepa/IMG_0653.jpg http://i177.photobucket.com/albums/w203/davepa/IMG_0650.jpg Regards Dave
  18. Just ordered the upgrade kit from PCW and it seems someone else in the Tomball, Tx area just ordered it too( occording to John at PCW). I would like to assist, if someone wants to give me a holler when they start their upgrade. I would like to see one done before I tackle doing mine. I should be doing mine in about 2 weeks and obviouly was hoping to find someone locally that has done the change and can supervise the change with me since I have never done it. I just want someone over my shoulder on some of the work. thanks
  19. Kindof a neat game to while the time away on... http://zone.msn.com/en/bankshot/zpadefault.htm heh... got nuthin to do... sitting here at work babysitting 2 IBM tekkies while they upgrade one of their servers.
  20. I have received a number of questions lately about the fusebox upgrade I did on my 87'VR last summer so I put together a budget kit for the upgrade. http://www.venturerider.org/classifieds/showproduct.php?product=2033 Any questions, please ask! Earl

  23. What should I buy/not buy?? I will do the steering setup and am considering a 2 tone paint job. Also want the wheel upgrade. What about the hitch? I already have a Diamond R o n the bike. What about leveling links and lowering kit?? Questions, questions...
  24. Just placed an ad for a new GARMIN 2009 Map Update. The package is sealed, has never been opened and comes with an Authorization Code. I bought this to upgrade my ZUMO 550 but got a new one that already has the upgrade. First $80 takes it.
  25. about a week ago I started a thread after driving into the ditch. I want to thank saddlebum, eazyduzzit, 99silver, Yammer Dan, SteveP, Eck, Twenty7Delta, BigBoyinMS, Wes0778 for input, suggestions & wit. they made this fix go easier & quicker than if I had not had their input. they all worked. the RSV is back together & ready for a ride. If the rain would ease up a bit, i could take it for a test ride. i avoided having to make a claim on the insurance, plus i got to do some work i may not have gotten to other wise. Like i really needed that! anyway here are some pictures of the work involved. I will upgrade and add the crash bar brace - but that will be another day. that upgrade will be easy compared to this self inflicted work. I want to thank not only those who gave direction, but to everyone on this site. it is refreshing to have this community. now if we can just get to gathering. time is something there is just not enough of.
