  1. OK, YOU WANT TO TAKE A 900+ MILE RIDE. I TOOK 79 VIDEO CLIPS ON MY RECENT TRIP. BEFORE I DELETED THEM I THOUGHT I WOULD SHARE THEM. IT IS 35 MIN. YOU HAVE SEE SOME OF THEM. http://www.photoshow.com/watch/mu6SM8Jf?source=em_ps_show_owner
  2. Good Morning All, Last time I rode my 2005 RSTD, I noticed a vibration at higher speed. My RSTD has about 9830 miles on it. I have read several posts here about greasing the splines in the rear hub and the drive shaft. I would like to do this before a trip that I have scheduled for the 24th. Can any of you direct me to existing threads with step by step instructions on what must be removed to accomplish this? For instance, is it necessary to remove the rear fender and the exhaust header pipes? I am mechanically inclined, but I haven't ever removed the rear wheel on a shaft drive motorcycle before. Also, I have read threads where people have ruined seals trying to remove the drive shaft. I want the bike to be safe for this trip, but at the same time, I don't want to do anything stupid that will end up causing me to not be able to take the bike on the trip. So can any of you point me in the direction of some step by step instructions of this process? (Pictures would help if available.) Thanking You In Advance. Regards, Tony
  3. We had a great 5 day trip out west. Come ride along with us! Sorry the show is a little long. So get a cup and enjoy. http://www.photoshow.com/watch/Bw3ER5ze
  4. I'm taking a ride next Sunday the 19th from Indy over to Parkersburg WV via I-74 to Cincinnati then US 50 over and down to Parkersburg to deliver a trailer. Leaving Indy by 8 am, leaving Parkersburg for the return trip by 3. Anybody wanna join in the fun? Could be just part way or the whole trip, I don't mind. Maybe a quick M&E in Parkersburg? Let me know. Dano
  5. Went down the East coast to the bottom of Flordia. Didn't do the Keys it was raining hard that day so I just went across the Everglades. Then went back up the West Coast as far as Clearwater. Now in Folkston Georgia at son's. Going to stop and watch WVU whip Maryland tomorrow and then head on home. Got burnt a few times stay in some good motels and some not so good but great trip and Warden claims she is tired of Beaches!! I liked the Gulf the best. And those girls down there are going to need some clothes if it gets cold... Ruffy I ment to call you but forgot info and haven' been close to puter since I left.
  6. So we've been planning this biking/camping trip since last spring. Bought a trailer, bought all the camping gear we'd need, made our plans and a few reservations, checked the weather forecast, loaded up and headed out Sep 4th early AM. First stop Osoyoos, BC for 3 nights/2 days of camping in one of BC's "hot spots". Booked a spot right next to the lake. Planned to soak up the sun, swimming, rent a sea-doo, go trail riding... blah blah.... and it all went downhill from here. The wind was so bad we could barely pitch our tent. Sand was blowing into everything. We slept overnight and in the morning the wind was still blowing and picking up so down came the tent and we headed out. Rode into Trail and stayed a night in a motel, visited some relatives and headed out the next morning. Weather wasn't too bad up to this point but that would be the last we'd see of the sun and any warmth for the next several days. We were bundled up pretty good to keep warm and dry and rode the Nelson, Balfour ferry, Creston route in cloudy, cool, and some rain ending up in Cranbrook, BC. Original plan was to camp over here for a couple nights but, no such luck as it was still cloudy, a bit of rain, and quite cool so, another night in a motel. Left Cranbrook the next morning and headed north to Radium, thru the park to Banff and on to Calgary. Again, the weather just wasn't with us so into a motel we go and stayed over a couple nights to visit friends. Poured rain the first night and all the next day so we decided to rent a car to get around .... just our crappy luck all they had was a Mustang convertible...oh well lol. Original plan was to ride to Biggar Sask to visit Nina's mom, stopping over at Drumheller but considering the weather forecast, we elected to leave the bike and trailer in Calgary and take the rented car. Due to this added cost, we also shortened our trip there and went straight to biggar, only stopping there for 2 nights, then back to Calgary. For most of that leg of the trip it was cloudy, rainy and quite cool although we did hit a bit of sun on the way back to Calgary and enjoyed riding with the top down on the car (for about an hour). Back in Calgary we stayed another night in the motel and lit out the next morning, heading south to Fort MacLeod and then west towards Cranbrook, ending up in Creston for the night. This had to be the worst part of the trip and probably the worst riding I've ever experienced. From Ft MacLeod onwards thru to Pincher Creek and Coleman, the wind was so bad I could barely keep the bike in my own lane of the highway. At one point we dropped down into a gully and across a bridge and as we were going down the hill, the sign said "Caution - Extreme Wind gusts". Now, I've ridden this route many times and have never hit wind like this and when we crossed that bridge, a gust of wind nearly knocked us right off the road. It was about all I could do to maintain some level of control over the bike.... totally scared the crap out of both of us. Left Creston the next morning and headed for Osoyoos once again, the plan being that if we didn't have some nice weather, we'd just continue on home. If we did, we'd look for a place to camp. Luck was with us as most of that ride was in nice weather. We were finally able to shed some of our several layers of clothing and get back to just jeans and riding jacket. The weather in Osoyoos was great! Mostly sunny and fairly warm so we started looking for a suitable camping spot, finally finding a great little government camp ground (8 camping spots) along side of a lake (Vaseau Lake sp? for those who know the area) and just one spot was left...and it had our name on it. So finally we got to utilize all our camping gear and the weather held out for us for a few days and we got to kick back and relax. We decided to head for home on Thursday (yesterday) as according to the forecast, it would be the last relatively nice day and we didn't want to be riding home in crappy weather. The ride home was great until about an hour away ... then we hit rain and by the time we got to our doorstep, it was coming down pretty good. Since we were so close, we didn't even bother to put our raingear on... just decided to keep on going even if we did get wet. Surprisingly, we barely got wet at all...just a little dampness on our knees and shins. All-in-all it was quite the memorable trip and Nina & I are still married! LOL here's some pics for ya'll to view...(they appear to be in either reverse or random order) http://s393.photobucket.com/albums/pp16/SilvrT/Holidays%202010/
  7. I know ya'll were headed out on a big trip sometime now, I just forgot when you were supposed to be back. I presume since you haven't been around to lately, you are doing fine, out of contact completely or doing something we don't want to hear about anyways . Hope all is going well and you two are enjoying your trip!
  8. I've been a member for a few months but have never posted. My ? is this.. My (new to me) 89 venture has developed a problem. After my 2000 mi. trip to the Black Hills I noticed oil in the overflow tank. What would cause this? Blown Headgasket? Or is there another way? :confused24:
  9. Just finished a 1250 mile trip over the Beartooth pass, through Yellowstone, down to Jackson Hole then through Wind River Canyon, over the Beartooth pass and back to Roberts, Montana. I hardly knew the trailer was behind the bike ! We encountered rain, wind, sleet and snow, never once did I feel uncomfortable about the trailer being behind me. I did have several encounters with the wild life of the area. First we hit a groundhog that ran into our path on the way up Beartooth, BUMP, no chance to avoid it. Then 4 days later we hit a Deer that darted out of the bush on US 212 just north of Red Lodge! Buckled my front fender and the turn signal trim ring and visor are now the property of a Montana ditch. We were only going about 10 mph at impact so I was able to swerve and only hit it's rear hoof. Kept the bike up,but , I do have a head injury from the wife slapping the back of my helmet repeatedly, Lol . If it were not for the increased stopping distance caused by the additional weight of the trailer we would have missed it completely. Yes the deer is fine. Can't wait for the next trip.
  10. I've read the prior threads on this, but didn't find the answer to my question on those, so I'll throw it out on the table one more time: Aside from normal miliamp drainage and a not-so-great charging system on the RSV, does a full drain of the batt due to stupidity (yes, I left the key on for 3 days! ) do any serious permanent damage to the battery? I slow charged it back to full, and it's starting OK, but I'm preping to hit the road for a 1,700 mile trip in a few weeks, and don't need any battery issues en route. The batt is about 3 years old. I guess I could yank it and take it in for a load test at the auto parts place, but short of that, any opinions on this?
  11. :biker:ROAD TRIP...Heddin to Euricka Springs. Be there Sept. 8th till Sunday the 12th. Starting from the Coast of MS. Anyone is welcomed to ride along or maybe meet us in E.S. for some riding and tellin lies. Any members in the E.S. maybe int. in a meet and eat, would be great.
  12. I think my wife and I are going to take off for Gatlinburg or Pigeon Forge Friday and ride around the area on Saturday. Of course her idea of riding around the area means to the nearest outlet mall. But I'm sure we'll make the trip over the mountain. If anyone is going to be in the area and wants to get together send me a message. Dennis
  13. Just rented a house in Snowshoe WV for 5 days with a group of people from all over the North East. We get together every year for a trip. There was 14 of us and the weather was great as was the whole trip. http://s280.photobucket.com/albums/kk180/neiar/NEIAR%20VI%20WV%202010/?albumview=slideshow
  14. Hola, I ride a 2008 RSTD it has between 11 and 12k on it. The only thing I have done is replace the stock air filters with K&N's. I hit reserve at about 140. I figured my gas milage on 135 leaving a bit of fudge room incase I need a gas station. I figured I am getting 32.5 mpg. I am doing a 4K roung trip this summer and trying to figure costs. I ride 80 miles a day round trip to work and 98% of the ride is highway miles. Anyone getting better mileage and if so what have you done to increase it of have you done anything? Thanks In advance SJ
  15. Hello Everyone. Just trying to put together a bike trip this Sept. Was planning to going to Billings, then south to Red Lodge and head for Cooke City, and keep going west to exit park and head for Livingston. I expect some very cool temps in the pass, but hope this is a good choice for route? Does someone have better suggestions? We plan to keep heading west and eventually head up to BC and the Nelson area before turning back east to home. Maybe we should do the trip in the reverse direction? Open to all ideas. Would like to do Chief Joseph also but perhaps save that for next year on the way to Cody? Thanks.
  16. Recently I bought locally, an 86 VR. The P.O. was trying to sell it to me, for about 1.5 yrs & it came with a Corbon seat w/ backrest in addition to the stock seat. I finally caved in, when during a call back home, a neighbour wanted me to pick up another Venture. This bike is for an Ontario trip next year, which I am to go with him on, from the wet coast. He has been looking after my place for the last 3 yrs, while I am in Wainwright. He is making this a "Bucket List" trip & don't want to do it, on an air cooled bike. So the work on it begins. Progressive fork springs Done CLASS controller solder job Done Ball studs for side covers Done SS Braided line kit Arrived Speed Bleeders Arrived Re-build masters & slave Parts shipped Console top pieces Parts shipped Exhaust gaskets Parts shipped Wheel bearings for as needed Parts shipped assorted grommets Parts shipped Tires Order later Deka Battery Order later I will be getting more into the work on it, after PIP.
  17. Well it looks like my first trip to Sturgis is a GO! Since my wife doesnt ride, I figured it is my duty to be an obediant husband and ASK for permission to go. Since I have all my work done she has given me the go ahead. Imagine that, 44 years old, around motorcycles most of my life, and LIVE in South Dakota, and it is my first trip out to Sturgis. Even though I live in SD it will still be a 4 1/2 hr drive. Have the trailer packed and ready, but it looks like monday before i head out. CANT WAIT!!!!
  18. I'm leaving this week on a trip from Texas to Iowa. About 2000 miles round trip. A friend said I could borrow his trailer but after picking it up this weekend I'm having second thoughts. It's a 4x8 utility trailer with a 2x6 lumber floor and 1500 lb capacity. We got the bike up on it (barely) by putting it on diagonally, but it's a real tight fit. The thing that has me spooked is the wheels. Only 4.8x12 tires, although the wheels do have a 5 bolt pattern. I'm just not sure a trailer like this was intended for such a long trip. I'm leaning towards biting the bullet and paying $300 to rent the 5x9 utility trailer that Uhaul rents. What do you guys think? Thanks.
  19. A couple of years ago, someone posted a copy of the VR Assistance List as either a .pdf file or as a Word Doc. this made it easy to download to a PDA and to easily print so I could carry a hard copy of it on our trip. Well, we have another big trip coming up in a few weeks, and it would be nice to have a copy of it on my Droid cell phone. Anyone have a suggestion on the easiest way to do this? Thanks & Be Safe! Pete. _______________ Oops! Never mind. I just found it. Just like my keys. I gotta ask first.
  20. Some of you have been following our ride for the last two weeks. Just wanted to let everyone know we made I made it home late last night. We started out on a two week loop around Kansas and Nebraska (in that we didn't touch either state). We left on the 18th and tavelled to Sikeston MO, on to Eureka Springs AR, through OK and the TX panhandle to Albuquerque NM. From there we went through Durango, Montrose, Telluride, Carbondale, Frisco, Estes Park and then on to the Black Hills of SD. We left Hill City SD Friday morning and made it home to Nicholasville KY last night, 1376 miles. Overall we covered 4410 miles in 14 days. It was an incredible trip. We saw very little rain, maybe 60 to 90 minutes the entire trip. It rained several evenings after we were settled at our hotel. We had no flat tires or equipment problems. Traffic was not a problem with the exception of a couple of lane closures for paving. It was a bit hot on the way to NM but after that the temperatures were quite comfortable. We travelled desolate highways, high mountain passes, beautiful canyons, and lush grasslands and forests. We saw many windmill farms. We live in a beautiful country as I'm sure you know. I had posted a few daily reports with links to the day's photos and some of you may have looked at them. I've combined all of those into a single link with all of the photos. If you care to see the photos they are at: www.traynorphoto.com/2010biketrip I also carried a SPOT unit. I highly recommend that if you have people at home trying to keep track of you. We had family following our track and it helped them know that we were safe and still moving. It entertained my 86 year old father-in-law as he sat by the computer with his road atlas following our progress. The SPOT track can be found at: http://spotwalla.com/tripViewer.php?id=6473 We've began planning this trip about 9 months ago so it will soon be time to plan next years adventure. We're thinking about the Oregon and N. California coastline. But you never know. Back to work tomorrow..... Dennis
  21. Well its been a month since we got back from the old Country, things have been hectic ever since, inlaws where here, daughter bought and moved into her first house then anounced she was engaged ,one of my riding mates is in the hospital with cancer,so i've been up there lots and another riding mate just got married so that was stag and rides dinners then the ceremony of course, just glad he's a christian rider ,so there wasnt much booze involved (had enough of that back in Scotland ;-) ). so we've been so busy busy busy ,i think i need a holiday .anyways i've managed to upload some pics from our trip back ,mainly from our bike trip . anyways heres the link to the pics if you care to see them http://picasaweb.google.ca/106503589568630976738/Hols201002?authkey=Gv1sRgCL68iYDR577DAQ# the last 3 are videos ,not very good videos i,ll admit ,but a wee taste of the highest road in the UK.
  22. Looks like we will finally be making the trip to Yellowstone and beyond in about six weeks! I know that it will be a little late in the year for some of the places that we want to see but it is just not possible for me to take off in the middle of the summer for that long. I would like to see if anyone who has made this trip can reccommend any must see places along the way. Neither one of us has ever been out that far and we would like to see and do as much as possible while there. We will be leaving here on the 17th of september and planning to be back on the 2nd of october. Hope to be able to go all the way up to Glacier Natl Park then head on back. If the weather doesn't cooperate we may have to alter those plans. Will probably run a couple of long days at first to try and get at least into Colorado then we will sort of play it by ear, if we find a place where we would like to spend a couple of days I don' want to be on such a tight schedule that it would be difficult. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Murph
  23. It was epic, at least for me. 4424 miles in 9 calendars, 7 riding days, all of it towing a trailer. http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4114/4786266951_9ea6715e72.jpg I had been planning this trip for months, laying in supplies and gear. I intended it to be a trial to a shorter but more camping-oriented trip coming up in September. That one doesn't have as many fall-back options, so I wanted to shake the bugs out NOW. There were bugs, and please note that I will be posting a trailer-centric message in that forum, but in this post will just mention in passing the issues I had. My trip actually was to start a week-ago Friday (7/17). I wanted to get a jump on the trip, since I was flying my wife Jamie to Indianapolis to avoid the longest days. I had to be there in time to get her at the airport, so I left after work Thursday. I ran up to Shreveport to have dinner with a friend, then rode on the freeways to Jackson, MS. I wanted to avoid deer, so I took the major roads. After three hours sleep, I headed north. It was my first real night riding with the HID, and I have to say that I wasn't impressed. It just didn't seem that much brighter than my old Silverstar Ultra. I didn't see the doe feeding on the shoulder until she was lit by the passing lamps, for example. However, one fellow got pissed at me and tailgated me for a while with his high beams on. I guess it was plenty bright for him. LOL I was just considering braking and then tailgating him with the high beams when he slowed and turned off his brights. No harm, no foul. I completed an iron butt by 2PM, but didn't print the form nor have the receipts, so I let it go. Besides, I already have my certificate. I got to Indy around 4:30 and relaxed until her plane came in. I was so relaxed, that I forgot that there was a time zone difference! I took the hotel shuttle and got there just in time to collect her. The next day we traveled to Battle Creek, MI, where my family still lives. We had a short diversion to Ohio. LOL One thing I saw right away was the casinos. In Michigan?! Things change, I guess. Sunday was the family reunion—the reason for the trip—and an off day. I did a minor trailer repair (see other post) and we went to the reunion on the bike. It was nice family time. Monday we went to the Soo Locks in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. Jamie had her first pastie in Mackinaw City, and it was delicious! The Mackinaw Bridge was scary to cross—the solid lane was closed for construction and we rode on the grating. I hate that stuff! At least it wasn't windy! The Soo wasn't busy, and we enjoyed watching a tour boat go through and I explained how the locks worked. Then we had an adult beverage before heading to the state park to camp. http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4101/4809470274_1644223e42.jpg http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4080/4810290320_741b8295b0.jpg It was our first night really camping with the bike. Our previous trial included a friend with a car, which carried supplemental stuff. This time we were on our own. The Powerlets I'd installed on Roxie had worked perfectly, keeping our electronic tethers charged. Now, it inflated the air mattress—almost. It turns out that a hole had worn in it. We rode back to Sault Ste Marie and got a patch kit, and it lasted most of the night. By morning, we were caught in the floppy water-bed feeling deflated air mattress. Ha! Tuesday, we packed and had breakfast at the diner outside the state park. Those were the greasiest hashbrowns I had ever experienced. I am glad I had listened to the LD riders' advice and packed Kaopectate. The roads along the Whitefish Bay Scenic Byway were gorgeous and deserted. We stopped to experience Tahquamenon Falls, which were even better than I remembered. http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4123/4812710574_a8f5a1efd7.jpg We hustled to Marquette, where I'd planned to get pasties and eat at a park by Lake Superior. However, the dark rain clouds and trailer repairs forced us to change plans. We left Marquette in a heavy rain that changed to a drizzle until we got to the Keweenaw Peninsula. We gassed up in Houghton, then took recommended routes along the western edge of the peninsula. By the time we took the Brockway Mountain Drive, skies were blue with fluffy clouds. Even so, we were done with the outdoors following the rain, and elected to stay in a motel instead. Snow gauge http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4075/4828386218_7c22f8f9ea.jpg The beginning of US41 http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4137/4828386706_02392e293b.jpg US41 is LONG! 1990 miles to Florida http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4080/4827779821_2ceb181148.jpg I was struck at how many conversations we heard of return visitors to Copper Harbor. SO many people return again and again. It seemed like a pleasant, tranquil place, and the thimbleberry cobbler was delish. I would like to go back. Wednesday, we took US-41 south out of Copper Harbor. Those first dozen miles are incredible, probably the best roads I can remember. Smooth, twisty, and covered by a canopy, they are magic! The remainder of the roads to Green Bay were pretty, but mostly looked the same. I put Jamie on a plane and then my solo trip resumed. I began to pound the pavement hard, eating up miles. I met a friend in Wausau, and continued to Minneapolis. I got there by 9PM, and had a late dinner with a friend. She insisted I try the burger at the Buffalo Tap, since she knows I am an avid burger connoisseur. It was "good", perhaps the best in the Minneapolis area, but would only get a B by Texas standards. Buffalo Tap Burger http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4137/4828387308_7bbc4c7d37.jpg Rain was coming, and I didn't want to fight rush hour traffic with wet roads, so I was traveling by 5AM. I wanted to get to Omaha by dinner time, so I of course went to Fargo. LOL! I had to collect North and South Dakota for my ride map. Minnesota and the Dakotas have surprisingly good terrain. Maybe it is that I am used to Houston Flat, but I loved these roads. What I didn't love was the construction. SO MUCH CONSTRUCTION! Very irritating! I am glad that they are spending the stimulus money (finally), but seriously. 300 miles of construction would be plenty, don't you think? It was raining or threatening rain until I got to Iowa, so I wore my rain gear. That did a great job of keeping in my body moisture, so by the time I got to my friend's in Omaha by 7PM, I was a stinky mess. Luckily, they had both a shower and a cold adult beverage (or two). The next day (Friday) was my first non-riding day since the Sunday before. I hung around town, met friends, and showed my friend's wife how to add water to her Suzuki Intruder's battery. She loved learning how to do something for herself, and an hour's labor just worked up my appetite for the burger at Stella's. Now, this burger is justifiably famous. It gets a very solid A from me. The fries were great as well. Stella's in Omaha: remember it! http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4140/4821785478_1a4d2cfb1b.jpg I wanted to be home yesterday (Saturday), so I got an early start. My phone kept thinking I had a text message, and kept making a noise every 15 minutes. It was my alarm, so I hesitated to turn it off. But when I rebooted it, the noise stopped and I still got my alarm. I was on the road by 5:15 despite a nearly sleepless night. Not much to report for yesterday, except a 900 mile day. Kansas and Oklahoma had some really nice roads. I dodged a bullet coming into Houston, when a terror of a storm blew in. My route let me thread the needle, and I stayed dry. Eventually most parts that I went through got 3+" of rain. Like I said at the top, I went 4424 miles on what amounted to a trial trip for the real McCoy in September. Most of my miles will be with the wife on that trip, I want them as easy and trouble free as possible. The technique of flying her so as to skip the longest days worked really well. She has shown that she can do a few 350 miles days without complaint. I'm looking forward to those! Dave
  24. We just returned from a trip from Omaha to the Grotto of the Redemption in IA then up to Okoboji and back. Just shy of a 500 mile trip. Perfect weather!! we spotted two Ventures riding together in Okoboji. Were they anyone on here?
  25. well i thought it would be about 2 weeks. but doc said go ahead and give it a try . told me i still have some muscle pulled some where in my lower left leg? i have some pain in that area no blood clot though. so i walked the entire leanth of the gym 2 times there is pain in the leg but not too bad. and my headaches are doing great now with the medication im on. so i looked at the doc and said can i give my scoot a ride today he said well since ya asked so nice. go ahead and see how ya do. well i didnt set a road trip record. but got the venture out of the garage warmed it up and off Dianne and i went. we did 60 miles round trip. so not so bad. brakes and exhaust all working well. carbs are a litttle off now after all the exhaust work? slight hesitation when I cracked the throtle. idles ok ? time for some more seafoam and run the pi$$ out of her. she sure needs some cosmetic work. looks like at some time a bike got tipped on the drivers side. at the shop where it was being worked on? i found some cracks that wherent there before and some green paint on the drivers fairing. also the lowers on that side is lose? wasent before? but since all the trouble i had just to get it out of that shop. i wasent going to call him and start a fight. fells great to ride again but got hot as heck at noon it hit 109 heat index dianne said oldgoat time to take you back to the barn. oh and her vstar for some reason gave me a run for my money in third gear? maybe just my nerves after a long wait to ride. now i have to figure out the slow wobble. between 30 and 45 mph and then again at 55 to 60. new tires only 300 miles on them maybe not worn in yet? well that the news from oldgoat today
