  1. We bought our '90 Venture about 8 weeks ago and have already ridden nearly 2000 miles on it. After reading many of the discussions here and getting more "in tune' with our bike, I decided to add the heavy fork brace and the Progressive fork springs to help cure the somewhat "flexy" feel in the front. Last Friday, I ordered both from the classified section here from the members posting them. I received the fork brace yesterday! all the way from California to here in Ohio. I just couldn't wait, so I installed it and went for a ride. What a difference! I began wondering if I needed the springs, but they are going to be installed before it is all over along with some new fork gaiters which are split in multiple places. Since the bike has only 12,000 miles on it and it spent a number of years on the center stand, the springs aren't that critical this week. One issue that I am puzzled by is the sound that is generated when I get the bike leaned over much more than about 70 degrees. There seems to be a bit of a "roar" from what I believe are the tires. It has Dunlop 404 tires on it at about 75% thst were mounted at the same time. Is this characteristic of these tires, or is there something else like a bearing bad? I don't have any experience with Dunlop street tires, all my other bikes have Avons on them. We are both extreemly pleased with this bike and want to have it in the stable for years to come so anything that might need to be addressed needs to be done soon. I appreciate the thoughts and wisdom of the group.
  2. Just wanted ya ta know I put dat tire I bought from you at M.D. on yesterday. I figured I had better do it before I go on Vacation in two weeks in the U.P. I had 21,294 miles on that Avon Viper without any cracks. I am happy with these tires. I took the wheel off and then ran it up to the dealer and had it mounted and balanced for $20. I waited for only 20 minutes and back home I went. Thanks for the good deal Larry. Hope you and Joyce are doing great.
  3. Where would I go to price tires for an 09 HD Ultra Classic? I know the sizes but I don't find them at SW Moto. Does HD have a lock on these tires? 130/80B17 65H (front) 180/65B16 81H (rear) He prefers WW but either would do.
  4. I'm not sure I'm placing this in the right forum, but I rec'd my Dunlop Elite 3's last week and got them mounted and balanced. I can't believe the difference! The bike handles so much crisper. I can especially notice that at low speeds. The tires are quiet, smooth, & great for not tracking grooves. The bike even feels lighter. I am very satisfied. Thanks to the members who recommended them! I purchased them through Southwest Moto Tires (who is recommended on here) and rec'd them the NEXT day! S/H is free when you purchase 2 tires.
  5. I've always static balanced my bike tires and they've worked fine. However I need to know a good way to balance my 8 inch trailer tires. Any ideas?
  6. I don't generally talk up products but I have to say something about the new ME880 Marathons. I've been running the ME880s for a couple years and though I've heard of a couple problems I've never had any. I've been averaging 20k out of the rear and I got 50k out of my first front. I was always pretty pleased with the handling and felt they were great touring tires. Last week I replaced the rear and found out they had changed the tires a little. The shop I use told me the new ME880s changed the way they size them (they were 140/90). Now they use an alphabetical system. I was also told they changed the compound some in an effort to increase both mileage and handling. Over the past week I decided to put that to the test. The max PSI on the old rear was 50psi. The new ones dropped to 40PSI so they're already a little softer in the ride but I have to admit I was surprised at the handling. I've put her through some tight high speed turns where I threw some good sparks and I have never felt so confident on a touring tire. They really felt more like sport tires. Yesterday we had some pretty good rain here and I had a chance to check the wet pavement performance. Same results. Very solid. It will be a couple months before I have any real idea about the mileage but the performance is the best I've ever experienced in a touring tire. If they wear well and the delamination issue has been corrected they have a real winner here.
  7. I just noticed the "wear bars" on my rear Avons.(25K kms) Last time I got a quote from Zdeno, and then went to BKBike on hwy 6 and they matched the price. Where do you all, from this area, buy your tires? Do you order them from the US? Unfortunately, I must go to a garage for the install, and that is a hun for the rear! So I'm trying to save a little do-re-mi. Thanks for your help.
  8. OK...don't hate on me...this will be a VAGUE comment/question/thoughts about the handling of my bike. I still have the stock tires on my bike. I have risers installed. My tires are inflated (both front and back) at 35 PSI. I know that is low for those tires (I think I have my log book stating the front should be 38 and the back 40). Anyway (and here's the vague part)...lately it "feels" like the front end of the bike is "loose" or sometimes it feels like the back is squirrely...other times the bike rides so smooth and stable. And I don't think it is the road...I am pretty sure it is either the BIKE or my IMAGINATION....but it's enough that it rattles me a little. So my question...would another 3-5lbs of air in each tire make that much difference? The bike is only 6 months old...could it be the steering bearings? Any ideas anyone?
  9. Have available 4 nexan 165/80/15 tires, brand new $43 ea, plus shipping. If interested let me know. Have in classified, but you will have to add the actual shipping cost. Am going darkside this weekend. Daryl
  10. Having followed a lot of tire threads, I still have a question. Why isn't there any true tread on most of the tires for our ventures? Daryl
  11. I am getting ready to get new tires for my RSTD. On my RoadStar, I have had 4 sets of Venom X, 1 Venom R, 2 Metz 880, and the stock tires. I found that I like the venoms more than any other tire for the heavy cruiser. I am looking at the 2 available for the RSTD one is rated "H" and the other rated "V". The H has a heavier load capacity. Do any of you Venom X owners have an opinion as to which tire would be longer lasting & why? Thanks
  12. I have searched the site to death about the whine these bikes have but need a little clairification on it. Is the whine everyone talks about the gear noise when accelerating up through the gears? I get a loud whine or growl I would call it when going up through the gears, it softens up when cruising and then at higher speeds I don't hear much at all. Just checking to see if the growl is what everyone is calling a whine? I know mines not worn with only having 6,000 miles on it but just want to be sure nothing is wrong before the long summer trips. This is the first Venture I've owned since many years ago. My other bike is a Harley Road King and it makes all kinds of strange noises but that is normal for them. I have changed all my fluids except for the antifreeze which I am going to do tomorrow(can't believe I have to pull the tank to do it), and I am waiting on new tires as these are the original 2000 tires on it now. i just want to be sure I have covered everything before hitting the road. I have split the fairing and braced the windshield and repaired the tabs on the windshield chrome thanks to the info here. I have certianly gotten my money's worth out of the site already so I was glad to donate my 12.00. thanks to all who have helped me so far and I look forward to meeting some of you out there on the road one day.
  13. I know this is silly but coming from a Harley air cooled engine I'll be darned if I can find the radiator cap on my 2000 Venture MM, someone enlighten me please as I don't have a manual yet and it only has 6,000 miles on it and has set most of the last year. I need to change all the fluids and the tires before putting it on the road. Still original tires, although no cracking or dry rot visable I won't ride it around the block on them. Having to learn all over again now that I went back non-American.
  14. He has both avon venom tires the am41 and am42 for $250.00. Also has anyone used the dyna beads for balancing the tires.was going to buy the metzlers but cant, pull the triger on them with all i have been hearing on them. Thanks for any input on this.
  15. How does everyone feel about having nitrogen put into tires. I have it in my truck tires and they don't seem to loose pressure with temp change. Now only check them when I have my oil changed. Now more local dealers and Quick oil change places are starting to cary nitrogen. One local Custom Cycle shop here also will put nitrogen in MC tires!!! Any feedback or thought on this.
  16. I know there are a buch of threads out abount tires, however, I just wanted to double check on brand. I have been using metzler me880's for a while but not happy with them at all. I am looking at Dunlop Elite 3's and just want to make sure this is a good tire(s) for my 06 RSV.

    Dunlop E3's

Just order a set of E's for my venture from Jake Wilson for 209.00 I so glad teh brickstones wore out 7500 miles and the rear is gone and could not wait any longer on the front to wear out.... I have never been so sick of a set tires in my life.
  18. Towing this Fibro concept Trailer ,I dont feel like its behind me, My question to you is how much air pressure do I put in these tires, I see that the tires on this trailer have Carisle Sport and Max pressure is 90 psi
  19. well im sure there is a link some where for this? but being not to good at the computer age. i have no idea where to look? so im going to ask the good pepole here.. im working on the venture doing tires rotor and brakes. well front tire came of nice. but. do you have to remove the back fender and the right muffler? it looks like the axle wont come out with out removing the muffler?
  20. Ok so the real question is, can you run two different brand/tread pattern tires on the front and rear... The main reason I am asking is because I am thinking of switching to a M880 and I currently have a Bridgestone on the front. The Bridgestone still has about 1/2 the life left in it.. I have heard mixed stories about traction, handling, and well all out safety..... Some stories I hear is that it's fine to do, and others are just NEVER do that!!! What do you all think... Thanks JM
  21. Check tires!! I looked my Cub Cadet over but didn't pay much attention to tires. They had air in them. Guess one was lower than I thought. Made a couple laps and rolled it off the rim. Didn't know they made 1st gen mower in 09!!
  22. I've seen several discussions of wider vs narrower tires on this forum. But I don't recall any discussion of changing the aspect ratio of the tires. tire width x aspect ratio = height of the tire. The stock rear tire on the 2nd gens is: 150/90-15 where 90 is the aspect ratio that determines how high the tire sits, and hence its circumference. Its also part of the overall gear ratio of the machine. ie: a taller tire is going to require fewer rpm's of the engine than a shorter tire (using the same transmission gear). This implies that a well worn tire will be 'geared' lower than a new tire... How about that? Lower aspect tires have less side wall flex than higher aspect tires, so may be considered stiffer. That might mean better in the twisties? A thought occired to me that one way to achieve a lower gear ratio, much as one does by using a Vmax rear end, could be achieved by using a slightly smaller aspect rear tire? Has anyone tried this? or even thought about it? This is also a possible alternative to installing lowering links.
  23. Yesterday I sent an email to Avon tire in regards to the cracking sidewall problems. Today I received a call from the corporate office in Stow, OH. It was a fairly lengthy conversation. The call was from a very nice lady with the title of Sales and Marketing Manager. I had told her in my email that within our organization, the Avon was by far the most recommended tire for our bikes. I explained to her though that there had been numerous reports of the cracking sidewalls and that many of us are no longer recommending their tires for the Yamaha Ventures and Royal Stars. Her response was that a couple of years ago, there was a change in the way the tires are poured and that she hasn't heard of any problems since that time. I don't know if that makes sense or not because though there is a current survey, there has not been enough input yet to really get a feel for the dates. I also suspect that many of the tires are long destroyed so there is no way of us getting those dates. She told me that they recognize it as a problem if they see a return rate of more than 1/2% on any specific model or even size tire. She said that she saw this go to about 1% before the change was made in how the tires are poured but it seems to have been OK since then. I told her that I am not convinced that the problem has been resolved. She then went into the usual spill about all the things that can cause a tire to split. I responded to that by telling here that my bike has been stored in the same garage with various tires for about 10 years and that the Avon is the only one that has exhibited this problem. The conversation was friendly but I didn't feel that anything was resolved. She did send me the following document that explains some of the things that might cause the problem as well as some other information. Most of it is common sense but there may be a few things that you will find interesting.
  24. Ok, I have read some of the input on the Shinko tires, but they are somewhat dated, does anyone have any more feedback on them, mileage, handling, pros, cons.......looking to buy tires for both bikes and having trouble getting the tires I want at MotorcycleProShops, cant order via internet, and keep getting voice mail when I call......and they have the best prices around.............
  25. While in the process of looking for a good deal on some new tires I discovered a warranty killer at least for Dunlop. It states in its warranty exclusions the following: Tires used on motorcycles fitted with trailers. Tires injected with dry/liquid balancers or sealants, or in which anything other than air has been used as the support medium. I am assuming this warranty exclusion is referring to the balancing beads and/or any leak preventing sealer? I looked on the Michelin website for similiar exclusion but did not find any. However, the Michelin tire care section is still under construction so it may be in the fine print too. You can see the entire list of Dunlop warranty exclusions at the link below. http://www.dunlopmotorcycle.com/infocenter_warranties.asp
