  1. Can't be long now, that the deer are walking around.
  2. Guest

    winter

foxnews said today we will have six more week of winter until spring come me and my mom hate winter
  3. Paints on. Lights in. Waiting on 'Chrome' wheels to get here. Still have to wire it and rub out a couple little runs in clear. C'mon spring!
  4. Looks like the bike show is Jan 30-Feb 1. Is anyone planning to be at the show. Don't have the money to spend but it is always fun to look. If anyone goes to it in DC or NY let us know if it is worth the admission and parking cost. But once the show comes spring isn't far behind (68 DAYS).
  5. Friends got a 92 Virago 1100. It has the updated starter assembly but still has a problem. It does not have the 2 spring clips that fail regularly. The starter intermediate gears that are on a spiral between the flywheel and motor do not return to the home position. These gears are on a pivot with a spring. Please tell me it is not the starter clutch that it $227!!! Any suggestions?
  6. Just wondered if there would be enough interest to try for a Spring Meet&Eat&Greet. Maybe Springfield or Litchfield or ??? Suggestions?
  7. Do we have any VR members from New Zealand? Don, would it be possible to update the Members List in order to identify by location those members from outside the US and Canada? Unless I'm missing something, the only way of finding them is by clicking on the Full List or Yukon which brings up everyone. I know we've got members in Australia, Iceland and Britain but not sure if there's an easy way of locating them. Heading to NZ next spring and would be nice to meet up with a fellow VR member if anyone's down there. Thanks.....Doug
  8. While my brother and I were out riding this year we started kicking around an idea about doing a 4-corners tour come spring. Not the 4-corners area in the Southwest, but the four corners of the US! Touching the bike tire as close as possible to the US border in the SE, SW, NW and NE corners of this country. We haven't actually planned anything yet, but the general idea was maybe to hit Daytona again in the early spring, then swing on down to Key West again, scoot along the southern boarder to San Diego while it is still relatively cool, then up to Washington and over to Main. Lots of other options too, but that will give you some idea of what I am talking about. I don't even know yet how many miles it is, when we might start (if we don't do the Daytona thing), or how long it might take. I can map it out on the computer pretty quick to start answering some of those questions, but I just thought I'd throw the idea out here and see if anyone might be interested in joining a trip like that? Or even part of it? I'm not talking about anything formally planned and pre-scheduled with reservations or anything - just an ad-hoc ride were we throw the leg over the bikes and go. I could actually put together a formal tour with plans and prices if enough people actually wanted to do something like that, but I doubt it. So what say you? Anyone interested in joining up for a long tour? Goose
  9. Ok guys saw the new tri-gluide today and I kinda like it as an option for the better half. Was told 38000.00 ca for the basic bike. So what do you think, is there a better way to go such as the Honda trikes. To be honest I,m kinda leary about Harley as I had an Ultra Classic in the spring and I took it back after 1400 kms and two oil pump failures. My 2008 Venture is still gonna be my main ride.
  10. My bike has 66,000 miles on it and recently I noticed that it wasn't engaging until the lever was almost all the way out. It never did slip. I ordered new friction disks and almost as an after thought bought a PWC heavy duty spring from somebody on the forum. When I took things apart this morning I checked the thickness of the old friction plates and the new ones. There wasn't much difference between them ( about the middle of the tolerance range .118). I put the old disks back in with the PWC spring. Now it engages close to the handlebar.
  11. It's becoming evident to me that my clutch is needing some repair. It has lasted 53,000 miles, and now it will slip if I get into the gas even moderately hard. Is all that's happened here for the clutch to slip that the spring has gotten weak? For a stock rebuild, assuming the steel plates and friction discs are still usable, is it basically just replacing the spring with a new one? I've never been into a motorcycle clutch, or a clutch on any other vehicle either. So referring to TT's clutch article, I have a few questions. The upgrade consists of what parts, exactly, the heavier PCW spring and a full size plate in the back? Is the Barnett pressure plate a part of the upgrade, or is it a same as stock replacement? How do I know if the pressure plate needs replacing?
  12. I was wondering if it's ok to use a synthetic automotive oil in the rear end gearbox? prepping for winter storage, I want to get as much service done now as possible because I know I wont have the willpower to do it in the spring when it get's warm enough to ride. Can I use a syncromesh synthetic or a typical 90W synthetic gearbox oil back there?
  13. I've been having a problem with my '99 Venture wandering or darting side to side when hitting uneven roads or bumps. Yamaha checked the suspension and said it looked ok. I still feel something is going on. Any advice on what could be checked to diagnosis what could be happening? How do you check the front forks for problems besides leaks. Is there a way to check the spring tension from side to side?
  14. Finally some good news to report. After living in an apartment for almost 2 years, this kid is getting back into the home ownership business. I recently found a 2189 sq ft split-level with 4 bedrooms, 2 1/2 baths, living room, dining room, kitchen, and family room for a resonable price for my youngest boy and myself. It has 0.4 acres of land (plenty for adding a pool in the spring) and a 2 car garage that seems to be big enough to put the car, truck, & bike inside during the winter. Financing in going to be through the VA and the rates are finally looking a bit competitive against conventional loans. Closing will be Nov 25 and possesion will be the first of December. My son was very excited, until he seen the yard that has to be cut. His first order of business is getting a puppy come spring time.
  15. Do you put anything on the new gasket when you put the clutch housing cover back on? I am going to put in the new spring kit today, and will need to know. Thanks
  16. Just wondering if there might be an interest in a Venture meet sometime in the Spring of 2009? I'm thinking around the Harrisonburg Va. Charlottesville Va area. Some beautiful day rides in the area in the mountains in Va and WVA. I'd be willing to try and locate a hotel that would give us a decent price if there is enough interest. I'm not trying to replace the meets already held on here, just trying to put together one I can actually attend. If you've never been to this part of the country it's truly a gorgeous place.
  17. I've been expermenting periodically with suspension settings for the past few years, especially since the air assistance began to leak. Initially I added a 1cm spacer which helped a little, but was not enough without the air pressure. Then I went to a 650lb spring, before deciding to upgrade. before the new spring arrived I fitted the spacer to the 650lb spring, but the thicker spring became coil bound on bumps in Irish roads and broke the spring seat. I fitted the upgraded shock after we'd limped home. ************************************************** [Problem with pasting table, please see attached excel worksheet] ************************************************** In case it's not clear, the columns are: spring rate, the free length of the spring, the fitted length, the amount of precompression (assuming no sag) and then the force on the suspension. When I had the new suspension made I asked for it to be a 1/2" longer, so the next column gives the load after that 1/2" of travel - at would be fully extended on the standard shock. I made a few assumptions (like about seven square inches internal area) to guess the force generated by the air pressure which I estimated as 500lb or 225kg, so the next column gives the combined spring and air pressure at rest (assuming no sag). The last four columns are the equivalent figures at fully compressed, which is important as you need to be sure that springs not only don't become coil bound, but have some movement left so they do not weaken through over-compression. To work out the air assisted max compression load I have used the same pressure figure. This could be grossly wrong, however, as the pressure may triple on full compression. I don't know for sure, though. At present I have an 850lb/in spring fitted and it sits way too low - with little ground clearance and not much suspension travel left. I'm not sure how much preload I wound on on the coilover Gaz shocks, but it's not enough. I'm guessing that I preloaded it 1/2" and then it compressed another 1 1/2", leaving 15mm, just over 1/2" of movement (equating to nearly 2" movement at the back wheel) - meaning that static, without a rider, by bike needs about 700kg force, 15-1700lb just to support its own weight. Without a sidecar, or with a lighter one you'd need less, with a trailer you'd need more. In the next couple of days a 1000lb/in spring will arrive and I'll preload it at least 1/2" and prefereably closer to 1". If you're thinking about upgrading your suspension, maybe the above will help - some car suspension manufacturers will find it hard to believe that spring weights as high as this are needed. Coilover springs are much safer to fit than the standard type of shock. WARNING If you fit a heavier spring to your standard shock, DON'T RELY ON SPRING COMPRESSORS (you won't compress them enough anyway) - make up a jig, preferably with 12 or 14mm studs (4 off) to wind down the spring. If the spring were to break free when fully compressed and if you were too close it could kill you. :240:That's because you have to compress the spring enough to fit the circlip into the groove and with the 650lb spring that's practically a tonne of force on the spring.
  18. Last week Sue and I made the move and bought a 2nd Gen. :cool10:We bought Denden's 06 Black Cherry RSV. It's a great bike and Denden and Vicki are great people. We look forward to seeing them in the future and getting to know them better. They did make us feel at home when we stopped by last saturday morning to pick up the bike enroute to Squidley's M&E. We're very happy we bought this and promised them we'd take good care of it. We'd been thinking about doing this next spring but just couldn't pass this one up. I still have my 90 VR at the moment but will put it up for sale after I get my GPS mount and some other things removed. It's also a great bike but I can't afford to keep both of them. Well, I could but Sue wants her space in the garage back. :rotf:
  19. Looking for spring that goes in the brake light switch under right front master , need spring or the size of it, Thanks Yoop
  20. Thanks to this forum I have repaired the E4 code problem but I think the Rear spring and or Shock are toast. It holds air ok and rises when inflated but bottoms out pretty hard especially with two up. Rate adjuster doesnt seem to do anything either. Is there an aftermarket replacement?? Viperpash
  21. Does anyone know if the torsion spring for the cruise control in the throttle cable box has any preload on it? {I.E. 1 or 2 wraps} Or does it just hook up easy? Took it apart and can see how it works but not sure of spring tension for assembly.
  22. A couple of weeks ago I put in a new set of Progressive springs in the front forks and purchased one for the rear shock. Some showed an interest in how the rear spring would affect the ride. Well the new rear spring is on the bike and it makes a huge difference in the ride. The directions from Progressive say that you only need about half as much air on the rear with this new spring. Well, my air compressor doesn't work so even though there is no pressure on the shock it still rides 10 times better than before the spring change. Wish I had done it 10 years ago. I got the front and rear spring from Rick Hafferkamp at Buckeye Precision. He had them in stock at the time. Rick also installed the rear spring for me also at a very reasonable price. If you need parts, or if you are in the Cincinnati area and need work, Rick is the man to see. Very knowledgeable on these bikes and his prices are hard to beat. He can be reached here: http://www.buckeyeperformance.com/ Dick :)
  23. Just want to relate a few things about the clutch upgrade I just did on my 01 RSV. Instead of replacing the fiber disc's as I have in the past on several bikes I opted to add the extra (it's not really an extra one just a full size disc) remove a couple of washers at the rear of the clutch as well as the wire retainer and install a new and stronger spring. All the information is in the Tech section of this forum. The tension on the clutch lever is a bit more but manageable. Now when the clutch bites it bites a little more than I would like, I don't drag race. The thing that is bothering me the most right now is the engagement point has changed quite a bit, it use to start grabbing about 1/3 of the way out. Not it starts to engage at about the same spot but then releases and doesn't engage until the lever is out to about 2/3's of the travel. Maybe this is something I need to get use to? I'm really thinking about putting the 1/2 disc back in along with the washers and wire retainer but leave the heavy spring in there. I have bleed the brakes just to change the fluid, there was never any air in the system. So for the guys that are running this system, does this sound like the way yours is acting? Jerry
  24. Hello Everyone: Just one question I need to install a new cluch. And I alredy have the oem fiber and steel plates. But what I was wondering is should I get the pcw heavey duty spring or the barnett plate and springs. Which might be better? Thanks in advance Quicksilver
  25. OK I go a new side stand...(last one broke) I am trying to put the new (to me) one on and can't figure out how the spring holder fits on... I just can't seem to figure it out. How does that bracket and spring work? Looked at some schematics...still confused:confused24::confused24:....my brain is just on working! I guess I stayed up too late last night!! Dave
