  1. Hi guys, just to touch base on the Speedo Healer for the RSV.. My bike would report back roughly 10% discrepancy in it's speedo and the GPS speed.. reconfirmed with another vehicle etc.. So I'm good and sure my speed is reading 10% under the actual speed.. 110 kph highway speed reads 120 kph on my speedo.. So I usually have my GPS mounted for accurate speed readings.. Not a prob but ya know how it is.. dang, I would like the bike to be accurate too huh.. A few years ago I had purchased a Speedo Healer for my 2005 1100 VStar but never got around to installing it on the bike for one reason or another.. So it sat in the box for a few years.. An article by Freebird in regards to "gear indicator" had a mention in there about Speedo Healers.. and it reminded me "darn I wish I had one of those for the RSV"... and funny enough the one for the VStar is the same one you would use for the RSV.. =) And wouldn't you know it.. the installation is bone stupid simple.. literally "plug and play" and there is an online calculator to help you with the settings on the unit.. a row of 6 dip switches have to be selected in a certain sequence to input the properly 'correction' into the unit's flash to make it all work ok.. I just took the bike out for a test ride and wow.. now THAT's locked in tight for speed.. A quick steady speed up the highway at 100 kph on the GPS shows also 100 kph on the bike's speedo... down to 40 kph in residential and same thing.. wow, it works!! The only thing I have to remember now is to NOT add an additional 10 kph to my bike's speedo other wise I will be speeding! VERY impressed.. wow.. You can find more info on these at http://www.healtech-electronics.com/ Someone had put up an installation guide.. it took longer to read the guide than it was to actually install the unit.. http://www.speedohealer.com/your_pics/royalstar/sh_install_royalstar.pdf It only took me 3 years but I finally put mine to use LOL.. I'll have to go through my box of goodies and see what else I might be able to put to use..
  2. I have a Vulcan 1600 Classic, which has a five speed, counter-balanced V-twin engine. At highway speeds, I find that there's a fair amount of high-frequency vibes that come through the floorboards and to a lesser extent, through the hand grips too. Is this also apparent on the Venture? And do you feel that the lack of a sixth gear is a big deal? Is the engine maybe a bit busy when up to highway speeds since it only has a five speed transmission, causing any kind of noticeable buzzing/vibrating?
  3. i know i need a steering head barron, had it tighten up took care of some of the prob.just hooked up my stelel horn and took it to gas up for the ride tomorrow (cops for kids) and in first gear at very low speed .almost at idle there is a vibration you can feel but when you speed up it goes away. will this thing be safe for ride tomorrow cause its for a realy good cause.
  4. Larry, When you and "T" went out to cover your scoot Saturday night, did either of you take my bike for a spin? When I started out of the parking lot Sunday morning, I noticed the "MAX SPEED" entry on my Garmin was 141mph!!!!!!! Yeah I should have taken a picture of it...
  5. Is there a fix for 1st Gen Speedometer error. Mine is off 6-7 mph at 35 mph and at higher speeds it is off by 10 or more mph. Now I calculated this with those radar speed signs and by doing mile markers on the highway. (Its reading a higher speed than I'm travelling.)
  6. Well as some of you already know I changed out my tires Wednesday with the help of Ponch. I purchased Dunlop 404 WWW for the bike. No problems making the swap and giving the full grease job to the splines etc. Wow what a change these tires make. I ordered the 130's for the front and what a different ride this is now. I could already handle full lock turns and all the slow speed handling from a lot of practice but I have to admit that now it is considerably easier. The members who say the front end feels lighter aren't kidding. The ride is superb now with the new narrower tire. Significantly better ride at any speed. I no longer have to push the bike to get it to make a turn and the handlebars feel so light now compared to before. I took off this morning and went and rode the local twistys to see how they handled there and it was totally effortless to make the curves compared to before. If you haven't tried a bike with the narrower tire you need to try it. Again I would like to thank Ponch for his personal assistance and this site for all the information that is shared here which has allowed me to personally make changes to the bike and keep it running. Now for the before and after pictures. Have a great fathers day all you fathers. Jim
  7. the frames at the sand blaster, and i just fired up the new motor for it. i bought a new 13 hp, 389 cc, overhead valve, electric start motor, from harbor freight. that along with the cvt, comet clutch, should set a cruising speed around 65mph, top speed around 75 mph. i'm using a zx-14 rear disc and caliper for the front brake and the original drum brake in the rear. it should stop good and run with the hardleys uo to 50 mph., with it's low weight of 275 lbs.. getting excited about getting my frame back so i can start machining parts for the drive train and get the motor mounted. i'm also going to 10" polished aluminum wheels with michlein tires to improve the handling. to finish things off i am going to paint it silver and blue clear coat to match my nomad. it will look original except for the wheels, disc brake, and fancy paint job. should be a real sleeper at the cushman meets. for all you folks that had and loved cushmans when you were young , they are still very popular. there are thousands of them around. check out some of the cushman sites. it makes a great hobby. there are alot of meets, and nice people involved in them.
  8. Zoom Zoom New battery powered land speed record!
  9. But where are yall able to run 85 mph, around here if you break 80 on the interstate a set of blue lights come on behind you. They are really getting strict in south ga north Fla. We went to Panama City Beach last week and it seemed that every few miles LEA had someone pulled over. I been driving close to the speed limit myself, never over 75 on the interstate. In the 20 miles of interstate on the way to work today I saw five traffic stops. Guess revenue is falling short. Gregg
  10. I took a test ride at a Columbus Oh. HD dealer today C&A Harleys. My son wanted to take a test ride and I agreed to go along. The one I would have liked to rode, Road Glide, was already spoken for when we could go and my son could get the one he wanted. The bike was a CVO Street Glide, 110 cu inches, which is 1800 cc. Fuel injected six speed. It was a very comfortable bike, Great guaging and controls. I have never been a fan of forward controls or a fork mounted fairing, but I did like the bike. It handled well at low speed when cornering. I probably would have liked it better, as far as comfort, if it would have had a drivers backrest. I felt like I was pulling back against the handlebars when riding it. Now the downside. It shook like an out of balance washing machine at idle. This smoothed out once under way. When accelerating it felt like the bike was starting to develop some power and it hit the rev limiter. With the six speed transmission, it seemed like I was shifting to often. I felt like my Venture would have probably been about 5 bike lengths ahead of the HD when I hit second. It just didn't have any really impressive power for a 1800 cc engine. MSRP was $31,000. It would make a nice cruiser for someone that didn't want any really impressive performance though. Bottom line is I am very happy with my dinosaur 1st gen. Even if I hit the lottery, this would not be my next bike. Did see an RSV there and left a Venture business card on the seat. Gary http://i1007.photobucket.com/albums/af193/gdingy101/Harleyrides.jpg
  11. I just got a 1986 Venture Royale with 33,000 miles on it.We just took it on a 1200 mile loop thru California and all went well. On freeway riding my rpms were arond 3800 to 4100 for speeds between 65 to75 mph. Does that sound normal for that speed and is that motor happy running that speed all day long? I'm used to lower rpm's as my last bike was a road king.
  12. Yah Right!!!!....... I never knew that this FJR would be this much fun to ride even with my Arthristis Its worth the pain:rotfl: My problem is how do I keep it under a 125 mph
  13. When I got the 01 the guy I got it from said the cruse was a little intermittent, and it was. It would hold some now and then some times for five or so minutes, and other times up to 45 or so. Didn't think too much about it cause I was going to Trike it soon. After Triking I rode it foe a few hundred miles before taking it apart again to paint, but at about 300 or so miles the speed -o went nuts, all over the dash, and I thought that the sensor got knocked out of whack underneath. I couldn't do any thing until I got the parts back to run it and check it out. I readjusted the sensor, and now have a steady needle, but the cruse upper two lights flash 4 times, and then off, with no set like before. I know that there are several things to check, but what I am really asking to get started is. Is the sensor a good or bad, go-no go device or can they be intermittent AKA Flaky. I know that until I get a rock solid speed the cruse isn't going to do diddly. Any ideas...
  14. I bought this 90 VR earlier this year and with the help of the threads on this site I've been able to fix just about everything, but now I'm down to my last two things and hopefully you guys and gals can give me a little direction... First, I just put new fork seals in, and I"m not to proud to admit it was my first time doing this. But here is the issue, once in a while it sounds like the springs are hitting bottom, it's especially prominent when I'm braking and hit a bump it sounds like a gunshot sometimes. I filled the forks up to the specified level, so I'm not sure what this could be, short of possibly the anti-dive locking up? It's got me stumped but that really wasn't very hard to do... Second, the rear brake makes a chattering sound, It's not a constant chatter, usually when I'm down to a slow speed. I can't hear it when I brake at speed, and I've even run it around without my helmet on to try and hear it. I'm going to take the rear master off this week and see if I can see anything obviously wrong with it. the brakes seem to work fine it's just making this weird sound. Other than these two things the bike is great, I ran it out to Moab a couple weeks ago and it's a dream on the highway and in the curves it keeps up with my kids R1. I don't mind spending the time or money to fix it up it didn't cost me much to start with.. Thanks in advance for all your insight.. . Bob
  15. While I realize there have been about a zillion and a half threads about people 'realizing' that their speedometer calibration is off, using a speed-o-healer, ignoring it all together, etc etc. I had an interesting realization last night while I was avoiding being pulled over puttering back across Vancouver. Last Christmas I received a Ram-Mount for one of the GPSes I have. I have now used it twice (both times in Vancouver) Partially because I have it so why not, and partially to make sure that I know how fast I am going in the appropriate units. As we all [most likely] know, the MPH side of the speedometer (on U.S. models at least) is off by 5-10% depending on who you ask, where you check it and most importantly whether you are using your turbo attachment or not. All kidding aside, I have found now through a speed range of ~10 to ~60 mph (10 to 100 kph) checked at intervals that were distinctly marked (ie 20, 40, 60, 80, 100) I found that with the speed held reasonably constant the GPS read a speed that matched exactly (obviously within the error of the width of the needle). Now this had me curious. Upon closer inspection I found (on my bike, which I presume is the same on others) that the MPH scale is not aligned properly with the KPH scale which contributes to the incorrect speed indication. Now before you say 'oh that guy is an idiot, of course it isn't perfectly aligned because the needle has to point towards the numbers and being that the radii of the curvatures of the speed range indicators are diffrent and the 'needle' points radially outward but is not a perfect , of course they wouldn't look visually aligned'. I solved this issue by looking at how fast my indicated speed was in KPH both on GPS and on the speedometer and verified that while the reading in KPH was correct, the needle was pointing to the wrong point on the MPH scale. So, how is that for a fun fact? By the way, I am in Canada where they use KPH -- which is why I have the GPS set to KPH and am paying attention to that. Anyhoot, just thought I would share my findings while I try to wake up enough to get some work done.
  16. With help from many members here and the great documentation on the site, I put on a new set of Dunlop E3's and regreased all the necessary spots although I did not take apart the drive shaft. The hub pins were badly rusted but I didnt see any other issues. So I take it out for a ride this morning to break in the tires and I have a new problem. A new noise coming from the rear end. Its a pulsating sound that changes with speed. If I pull the clutch at any speed the noise get far louder. I dont see any marks on the tires so I assume somethign is wrong with the drive train back there. Other then this issue, there are no problems with braking, engine, power handling. Any advice is appreciated. I'll be tearing it down again this morning.
  17. Does anyone know of a document that gives a minimum vehicle ground clearance that the manufacturers must meet. There are some local speed bumps that a lot of people (including me) drag bottom on, they claim that the speed bumps are less than the minimum legal vehicle height, I would like to find out what that dimension is. Preferably a document to reference.
  18. After synchronizing the carb’s within 10 mmHg (each column) using the Carbtune Pro (at an idle between 1,000 – 1,100 RPM) on a 2006 RSTD the engine idle then randomly fluctuates between 730 and 1750 RPM’s. Obviously, when this change in idle speed occurs the previous adjustment (in vacuum) to match all columns exceeds 10mmHg. You can adjust the idle adjust screw to change the engine idle speed but this adjustment does nothing to stop the idle speed from randomly changing. What could be causing this to occur? Thanks 2 Flights
  19. On our way back this past w/e from Indianapolis to Omaha NE, we pushed our speed pretty hard. We ran mostly about 80 to 85mph most of the way. I tucked in behind a Truck or SUV that was going faster than the speed limit and just followed them as far as I could. I stayed at a safe distance of course, but still follwed them lane change by lane change. My thought was that the radar was going to spot them before me. And, my Brother-in-law says that a cop is going to stop a full sized vehicle before stopping a bike. What do you think? Secondly, when 3 or 4 bikes are all doing this and you pick them up on radar, I'm not going to stop unless I am specifically singled out by the cop. I told the other bikes that if we get caught that 'the one' would be stopped and the rest of us would wait for him at the next exit. - Which bike do you stop if they are all going the same speed? craigr
  20. Idle speed adjustment – RPM’s (2006 RSTD) I am seeking guidance on the correct procedure to check/adjust engine idle speed before doing a carburetor synchronization on my “06” RSTD. What specific equipment is needed (timing light with RPM feature, etc.) to properly set the idle speed? I have downloaded the file (Free bird) from this site (Tech Library) for doing this carburetor synchronization. Specific instructions are appreciated. There is nothing like avoiding the pitfalls of life in motorcycle care and maintenance with sharing the wisdom of others who have been there and successfully done that. Thanks 2Flights
  21. I never towed a trailer before and I know that the trailer I have will go 70mph with no swaying BUT Whats the recommended safe traveling speed for towing a trailer behind a scoot
  22. I have a couple more questions. 1988 venture First my speedometer is off about 15 to 20 miles an hour anyone have any idea about why or how to fix. I also have a wine which I think is the speedometer. I heard a really loud squeal when i get up to a certain speed, goes away when i slow down. I have seen in this site how to grease the speedometer but I don't know if it is in the head or down at the wheel. Second is there anyway to adjust the clutch on these bikes? When i let out on the clutch it goes almost all the way out before it starts to engage. Third any ideals on why i have a hesitation when I first give it gas. It will do it at almost any speed. Is this what happens when the carbs are out of sync or is this maybe from the diaphragms leaking.
  23. I have a 2006 RSV. I was out on the road over the weekend and my cruise control was out of control. When I would engage the cruise control it would start accelerating at a rapid speed all on its own. Any suggestions or help would be greatly appreciated!
  24. While out today, I encountered a fairly new 911 type convertible Porsche moving thru some traffic in front of me on the split four lane. He went around some slow traffic coming out of a red light and nailed it a bit. I followed him with him having a run on me for a couple of seconds and then we quit accelerating at about 65 in a 55mph speed limit. I ended up pairing off with him at the next light, about 3/4 a mile later, and was curious as to what he would do. As we sat waiting for the light to change, I did a quick 360º view so see what was around. When the light changed, we both nailed it. From zero to 70mph we stayed exactly side by side, even through my shift from 1st to 2nd. At 70mph, with me topping out in 2nd at 8,000 rpm's, we both decided that was as fast as we wanted to go and slowed back down to about 60mph. I looked over at him and he gave me a big smile and a thumbs up. I have done a few red light runs over the years and may make a run up to maybe a little over the speed limit, but I just don't do the runs much over the speed limit now, getting too old. I really wanted to tell him that he was just matched by a 26 year old bike with 123,000 miles on it, and the guy riding it was a Great Grand Father, but I didn't. That was the strongest stock looking street car I have paired off with in a long time. I did not look to see if it was a turbo, but it was quick. RandyA
  25. I have a question. I brought a 2000 venture mm and i was wondering if the speedometer is suppose to move like a speedometer in a car because mines sticks as I am accelerating and then when I let off the throttle it jumps to the speed I am going. The cruise control also wont stay engaged if the speed drops going up hill. I need to know if anyone else has experienced this problem and how they resolved it. Thanks for the help in advance.
