  1. We trailer when we have limited time for vacations, it's easier to hook the trailer to the RV and drive straight through to where we're going. Especially since the wife rides a HD 883 and taking that thing across country beats her to death. We trailer in ride for 5 days then trailer home... nice and neat..
  2. I figured it was the springs, I will get to ordering a set hopefully this next paycheck. The brake info helps a bunch, I was guessing on this one, with the master cylinder working both the front and the back I figured I'd start at the source and work out... I do try to do most of the work myself, but I'm never to afraid to ask for help... Thanks agian, Bob
  3. I bought this 90 VR earlier this year and with the help of the threads on this site I've been able to fix just about everything, but now I'm down to my last two things and hopefully you guys and gals can give me a little direction... First, I just put new fork seals in, and I"m not to proud to admit it was my first time doing this. But here is the issue, once in a while it sounds like the springs are hitting bottom, it's especially prominent when I'm braking and hit a bump it sounds like a gunshot sometimes. I filled the forks up to the specified level, so I'm not sure what this could be, short of possibly the anti-dive locking up? It's got me stumped but that really wasn't very hard to do... Second, the rear brake makes a chattering sound, It's not a constant chatter, usually when I'm down to a slow speed. I can't hear it when I brake at speed, and I've even run it around without my helmet on to try and hear it. I'm going to take the rear master off this week and see if I can see anything obviously wrong with it. the brakes seem to work fine it's just making this weird sound. Other than these two things the bike is great, I ran it out to Moab a couple weeks ago and it's a dream on the highway and in the curves it keeps up with my kids R1. I don't mind spending the time or money to fix it up it didn't cost me much to start with.. Thanks in advance for all your insight.. . Bob
  4. I really appreciate all the feedback from you guys, but when I got home Wednesday night I started to really inspect the front end before I started to take it totally apart again. What I found really sucked.. for lack of a better word.. The forks have compressed up into what I'm guessing is the bushings, and they were stuck. I called a buddy of mine and he said he had only seen this happen once or twice before on other bikes. So to make a long story short I ordered new Progressives for the front yesterday I went to the dealer last night and ordered new seals, bushing, and all the assorted parts needed to rebuild the entire front end. I put the bike on it's center stand and took off the front fender and gave the top of the tire a good whack from my rubber mallet and the front end dropped out of where it was stuck at and looks fine now... But I know better. So it's back to the drawing board, the shocks should be here Monday and I'll let you all know if replacing everything worked... Thanks again for all your help, Bob
  5. I'm headed home now to drain the forks and refill, I believe that they are the stock springs, I'm going to have the entire front end rebuilt this winter I'm just hoping I didn't screw it up to badly this past weekend. I'm betting on overfilled, I'll keep a close eye on how much each side gets tonight. Thanks again for all you guy's help and advice. Ride Safe,
  6. I read a couple of the threads on here and I got some 10w from the local Yamaha dealer, as far as how much, the book said 400ml I put about 275-300ml in each side figuring that there was some left in there, since you say the air line probably isn't the issue then I'm guessing I need to drain out what I put in and start over... The only thing on the CLASS system is it's going nuts, when I push the "H" button for the front it takes like 10 seconds and it's at high, the compresser doesn't even run for a second or two, before I screwed with it, it took 30-45 seconds to air up... plus you could see the front end move up and down and now it doesn't move at all... I should have taken it to a shop, I'm not a MC mechanic, cars I can work on but MC's are a whole different animal... Thanks
  7. I've got a '90 VR and I noticed a while ago that the forks seemed to be weeping, so I got energetic this last weekend and following a couple of the older threads on here I was able to open up the top end and add fork oil, I'm hoping to just get her through the summer and then this winter I'm planning on an entire front end rebuild.... Well everything went well or so I thought but when I rode it to work yesterday, the forks have absolutely no give, the CLASS system is running on high and I can't seem to get the air out of the front end, is it possible when I put it back together I pinched off an air line? Or maybe I added to much fork oil? I'm just looking for suggestions, I know I'm going to have to tear it apart agian tonight and see I am just hoping that one of you guys had the same issue and maybe save me a lot of trouble and cursing at it tonight.. Thanks in advance for your help, Bob
  8. So I bought my Venture in March and with the snow haven't had much of a chance to ride it, this weekend however we went out on a family ride, My son took my R1 and my wife on her Sportster, we went up in to the twisties above Denver. All I can say is WOW, the bike handles like a dream on the curves, and I kept up with the kid on the R1 in most turns the only time he got away from me was on the short chute straights where his acceleration out did mine. I'm really glad I bought the VR and can hardly wait for the balance of the summer to be here so I can really see what it can do. I ordered a new set of progressive front springs for it this morning, hopefully I'll have them installed in the next couple of weeks... It may be 30 years old but it's going to have a place in my garage for a long time to come. Ride Safe
  9. If you look at the J&M website they also have the "Integrator IV" which utilizes a portable CB radio, the CB on my 1990 VR is giving me fits, so I just bought the Integrator and the portable CB for around 150.00 dollars, plus that Integrator allows you to plug in an MP3 player, cell phone and GPS... It's hopefully going to bring my VR into the 21st century..
  10. CDOT has the programmable billboards saying "Share the Road Watch Out for Motorcycles" 15 years here in CO and this is the first time I've seen them do that... About time though... Ride Safe
  11. I just had this issue yesterday, one of the guys here at work pushed in the Mute button on the CB/Radio control on the left handlebar, look and see if the green light is on above the Mute, you really can't see it very well when you're riding especially if it's sunny. I found mine was on when I pulled into the garage... Hope that works,
  12. I don't pick up any heavy chicks, I think the wife might have something to say about that.. I'm not sure why the previous owner had it set so high. I got it from the son of the owner who had passed away last summer. He had no idea what it was or how much it was worth, he asked if I'd give him 500 for it and take it away... I almost dropped my checkbook while writing the check so I could get out of there. It only has 33,000 miles on it and it's in fantastic condition. I'm really looking forward to getting to put some miles on her this summer. I'll post some pics hopefully today, since it's raining I'm staying in and doing some minor work on her... Thanks again for all your help,
  13. I found that rear adjustment dial and it was set on 4, so I turned it down to 1 and took her for a quick ride, feels great barely felt the potholes I found... Thanks again for all your help...
  14. Well now that's a good question... I'll look when I get home. I just got the owners manual in the mail yesterday, I had to buy one from Yamaha the bike didn't have one when I got it, so all those bells and whistles that the bike has are new to me... What can I say this is the first time I've owned a bike with saddlebags let alone any of the other stuff she has... LOL.. I'm learning though... I can tell you this site has been a godsend over the last couple of weeks, I think I've read every thread on the MKII as you guys call it, Thanks
  15. I really tried to pay closer attention to what the suspension was doing last night on the ride home, I set the air system on medium and actually tried to hit a couple of pot holes... The rear does seem to ride harder than I think it should so I'll pull the back end apart tonight, since it's supposed to rain tomorrow it'll give me something to do... Also as a side note the front end seems soft when the bike isn't running, but when I start it up it stiffens up quite a bit, I'm assuming this is the air system doing this. This is the first bike I've owned that has the air ride. I'll keep playing with the air ride until I find a spot that works, thanks again for all your help. And I'm already enjoying the bike, it out accelerates my Roadstar and it's more comfortable for an old guy like me to ride than my R1, that is when I can get the R1 away from the kid... Thanks,
