  1. I need to order the small plates and screws that hold the power plugs in place for the AM-FM radio for my 89 VR. They are screwed into the bottom of the tray where the radio goes on the left side. I tried looking in the parts drawing on Bike Bandit but couldn't find them. Can someone provide me with the part numbers for the two mounting plates and the screws? And are the parts still available from a Yama dealer? The photo is from an '83 but I need the part numbers for a '89 Venture Royale. Thanks for any help. Jim
  2. oldgoat

    tool

anyone every heard of a tool called grabit? im working on pulling the radiator on my 84 yamaha venture got some things off but need to remove the chrome plastic covers and of course there are 2 verry rounded off screws there. i tried a bigger phillips screw driver and they moved about 3 turns when that damn screw driver slipped and rounded them off to where it looks like i have to use some kind of extractor. and it looks like the grabit tool just drills and burnish then flip the tool and remove the screw. of course i have to get a cordless drill as there is no outlets in the storage unit for a elcectric one. if any one else has any ideas on removing these screws let me know.
  3. So I was riding my 2002 RSV home from work and pushed the up arrow on the radio to change the station. Instead of tuning in to the next station the radio stock flopped forward. The two screws that are supposed to hold it to the mount must have got lose from vibration and came out. Does anyone know what size replacement screws I need? For now I've got the radio attached to the mount with tie wraps. Thanks, Dan
  4. Never could find the articule about loose screws on a RSV, but, I know it will happen to the: left and right saddlebag lids trunk lid Now, for my story... Thursday I decided to take the 650 VStar midnight custom out for a spin and rode about 50 miles. Was going down a straight away when "sprong" the top of my gas cap came off and started to go to the road. I hit it with my right knee and it landed in my lap. Then, a metal/rubber section came up and i did the same thing. I slowly stopped and looked at pieces in my lap. In all 3 pieces. A brass piece a rubber piece and the chrome topper. I stuffed a leather glove down the tank hole and proceeded home. Out of curiousity I discovered my RSV locking gas cap fits beautifully on the 650. Probably the exact same cap. Now, I have to drain the gas tank and retrieve the two phillips head screws and the aluminum spring assembly that must have fallen into the tank. Guess what I'm saying is, the gas cap screws need to be added to that list...
  5. Fragments of grunt: Guys, are you married to a shine freak?? If you are then nothing is safe. And you know what im talking about. 32 1/2 years ago I married a wonderful woman. She can cook, ride a bike, drive her own hot rod, etc. What I didnt realize then but found out soon enough was that she was a shine freak. NOTHING IS SAFE AROUND HER!! Put your newspaper down to get a drink and in less time then it takes to pass wind its in the recycling bin. WHY?? Because you were foolish to leave it. Eat food in the living room and set it down...its assumed that you are finished with it and it magically disappears in one fell swoop. Never mind the plate is still about 1/2 full. Make sure you have enough ketchup and drink by your side so you can protect your well earned meal from invaders by not leaving it alone for a minute (or less) I swear she gets faster with age. Now you ask, just how does this apply to dirty dogs and extra screws? It does in its own weird way. See, if you werent married to a shine freak, you wouldnt be waken from a sound vicoden induced sleep on your first day off to give two great danes a bath. Oh joy!! About the time you finish FedEx arrives with a package and you shudder!!! Was it something that I bought for the bike and never told her??? NO, its the replacement oven door glass that was shattered no doubt caused in part to its excessive cleaning regiment. I thought it would take a week to get here and id be safe.noooo, the part was ordered on Sunday and it flies here in a rush, just to make me do more work caused by excessive cleaning. Screws you say and how the fit in here? OK men, we all have at one time or another had a few leftover screws/bolts, even parts when we put the bikes back together. Well this theory also applies to oven doors. You tape over the shattered glass to take it out in one piece, remove the 16 screws that hold various parts in place, meticulously clean all the parts of old grease because you fear "She Who Must Be Kept", (who is out shopping at this time, Yea thats another story for another time). Proudly clean up the work area (Kitchen counter) and discover 2 screws laying under the door. Hmmmmm. So you patiently take it all apart again and discover the location of your missing screws and put it all back together nicely again. She comes home.....proclaims the area a mess (even after the thorough cleaning you just gave it) You hide, quaking in fear......And after all that work you feel that a nice home cooked meal in that oven would be nice. WRONG.....she wants to go out to dinner..no way is the oven getting messed up by greasy meat substances. You sigh.....she says what did you say?? I say sweetie, lets go out to Texas Roadhouse tonight. And all is well again. Moral of this story: were wimps....and if she sees this then im hoping Boomer has a spare female pygmy I can run away with because both of my legs will be cut off at the knees.
  6. hey guys i need some help,i have the manual but it doesnt show or tell what i want,1st off mine is an 84 venture xvz1200 and there is one screw around the cable adjustment on the drivers left side what is it for? and then there are 2 screws in the same area on the right side, what are those? and if possible how to adjust all 3 cause until i can afford to get the carbs synced i need to adjust my idle cause it is to low and fluxuates a little to much, one of the guys here told me that there was a round screw knob around carb 2 but mine doesnt have one, so please help all u can with these 3 thnx and i have pics of the 3 i will try to add here but if not email me and i`ll send em to ya thnx troy
  7. I managed to break the antenna on my '86 VR today right at the CB load (wide part). Anyone have the entire antenna shaft where it screws into the mount that they would part with for a reasonable amount? Thanks for your help.
  8. Ok, I know these will get a better bite on an OEM screw on a Japanese bike. The most common problem that I run into working on the older bikes is simply that the last guy has damaged the heads or stripped out the screws and can't get what he was working on apart. So if I was the kind of guy that orders every screw from the stealership I'd be in good shape. But I'm not that guy. LOL So the question is, and dumb it might be, but when buying metric screws at the local hardware store is the head going to be JIS or our standard? Mike
  9. I'm nearing completion on some updates on my 09 RSV. (aux splitter, passing lights, trailer receiver, trunk wing, drivers back rest) I've been carefully labelling bags of parts and marking on the instructions/tips so I know where everything goes. For the saddle bags... figured I knew what I was doing because I had them off when I put saddle bag rails on last summer. Here is the scenario... unscrewed the four bolts holding the saddle bags on and put them into the little "cup" inside the saddle bag (closest to the tire). Did this on each side and closed the lids and set the bags aside. One tipped over but nothing major. Finished the trunk wing today and started putting the saddle bags back on. Missing 3 screws. Looked on my work bench, checked the plastic bags of parts. Still missing 3. Used a flash light to look in the bags again and nothing in the "cup" or in the bottom of the saddle bag. Looked in the mesh pouch... nothing. By chance, looked BEHIND the pouch where the rails are for the saddle bag lid and low and behold.... there they were ! Had to undo the flap from the mesh bag that attaches to the lid just to be able to poke a magnet down far enough to get ahold of them. Figured I'd check the right saddle bag to make sure everything was secure and found my hinge screws were loose. Only job left now is to fix the chrome windscreen tabs and put the fairing back together. Come on spring ! Forecast this week are temperatures near freezing and flurries.
  10. Maybe someone here can help. Does anyone here know how to remove stripped and seized air screws on the venture carbs? I have had a lot of trouble with my carbs and found a decent set of used ones. I cleaned them up replaced the needle and seats, new slides and diaphragms, as I was getting ready to re install them I saw the air screws had the heads stripped off and they wont move, I want to see if I can fix these any suggestions? Thanks Rob
  11. So I decided to spend the next week going over the bike changing oil etc. in preparation for Biketoberfest (I hate it when friends use the week of the event to get their maintenance done) Today I went over 4800 miles and decided to start with the saddlebags. I had read that the screws holding the hinges on need to be checked for looseness. I never really looked close at where those screws are. Good thing Yamaha put them behind the fabric. Out of the 8 screws only one was loose, but I took all of the screws out that were going into metal and put a dab of blue loctite on them. Anyway as others have said here before, check your hinges.
  12. Today...I noticed that the windshield on my 08 RSV was a little "loose". So I pulled the top fairing screws and removed the chrome trim. Now I can see why the windshield was loose! Missing 2 screws COMPLETLY and 3 screws just about ready to fall out. The screw that mounts in the hole in thw windshield is one of the screws that is MIA. Closed inspection reveals that screw hole in the fairing is completely broken off. (insert swear word here). Since it looks like the screws may have fallen inside the fairing, I decide to crack the fairing to look for the screws. The GOOD...I found one of the screws. The BAD??? The crossmember that the windshield screws actually attach to is held in place by a frickin' TIE WRAP! The bolt holes that SHOULD be used for mounting the windshield crossmember are rusty...which means that the two flange bolts where never installed. Worse yet, where the windshield crossmembers connects to the inner fairing, those are completely broken off as well. AND...two of the tabs on the Chrome Trim are broken.... The dealer I bought the bike from went out of business several months ago, and the dealer I'm currently has already replaced the turnk lid and left lower fairing due to cracks and broken pieces. He's gonna have a stroke..cause now he will have to replace the entire fairing (both inner and outer). Has anyone else encountered these types of issues? I know that the bike is still under warranty, but I'm pretty sure the dealer is going to question how these things got broken. Do you think these "failures" are due to Yamaha "engineering" or the fault of the 16-year old mechanic making $8 bucks an hour to uncrate and assemble these bikes at the dealership?? Me...I'm on the fence!
  13. what is typically the problem when the idle increases? I am looking at purchasing a 1083. The current owner indicates that is has something with the set screws slipping, but then says he isn't familiar with it. Any advise is much appreciated!
  14. Im going to need a clutch resevoir that has good sight lenses in it, I will be screwing up the one on the bike to extract the screws that are all bugered up. some people should not be allowed to use tools!! I wanted to check the fluid levels, sight glasses are completely fogged, pulled the chrome covers and the screws are completely messed up I will have to drill them out to get the covers off. If anyone has one Im looking for one let me know ,Thanks.
  15. I need to remove the front rotors to work the HF bead breaker I have (without breaking the rotors). What the heck are those screws holding the covers on? Torx maybe? Dave
  16. Yes, sometimes the problem you are trying to slay is caused by the most simple cause, but even then it can be a REAL PITA to find! Been having a surge in my idle speed for the past few weeks, so today I decided to check it all out, re-set the carb mixture screws, and actually compare the screw settings I get when just using a tach compared to my exhaust gas analyzer in preparation for Maintenance day. Shoulda been pretty simple, right? But it was anything but! When I checked the mixture screws on #1 and #2, they made almost no difference in the idle speed. In fact, the bike actually picked up a bit and ran BETTER with the mixture screws for either of those two jugs ALL THE WAY IN!! Now that was weird. In contrast, the two right side jugs acted perfectly normal. So I hooked up the gas analyzer to check the CO% - no problem dialing in the right two, but those damned left two wouldn't get below 6% even with the mixture screws closed, and if I set them out around 3 turns, it was pumping 15% CO!!!! Plugs were not that old (about 12,000 miles), but I decided to put new ones in, just in case. Those left two were real black and sooty - either running mucho rich or lots of problems firing. Seemed unlikely I would have two bad plugs at once, but I crossed my fingers and fired it up again with the new ones - no joy. So now I am really stumped trying to figure out what coud be affecting just the left bank. Decided to check the sync - seemed unlikely, but I could imagine that something had gone haywire with the linkage. Got the gauges on there and sure enough, both left carbs were pulling a couple of inches of mercury less than the right. Aha! says I, now I'm on the track. But alas, no. It was not the sync. OK, this is long enough, so I'll jump to the end. While I'm futzing around and starting to get really annoyed, I happen to grab the choke knob and push it in, AND IT MOVES!!!! Simultaneously, the bike settles down to a perfect idle! And the carbs come right back into perfect sync too. That is all it was - choke just a tad out and hung up. Nine freaking hours later, and now all I gotta do is finally reset all the mixture screws that were probably just freakin' perfect to start with!. No moral here, just had to share my pain. Hope it helps someone to stop and think about their problem and get back to basics a little faster than I did! Goose
  17. Im new so I guess they are called fairing grills. Im thinking these intake spaces would be a good place for driving/marker lights. After removing the screws, I found something else is holding them. Can somebody tell me how they come out? Thanks ! 1988 VR
  18. OK, I'm tired of boogering up the heads of the master cylinder screws every time I need to add brake fluid to my bike. Does anybody know where I can order that size screw in hardened stainless or an allen head???
  19. I'm wondering if anyone else has had this problem. On my right saddlebag the screws that hold the hinge mount plate to the bottom of the bag (see attached pics) are failing. The screws screw into the molded plastic and the plastic is disintegrating. To me it looks like they were overtightened at the factory. I just notice this a few monthes back. The left bag has no issues. I have been very careful not to overload or overpack the bags. I will be talking to my dealer about warranty and want to make sure I have as much info as possible. Comments appreciated. Thanks JR
  20. Ok folks, I need some help.. I just got my set of passenger Highway pegs from Diamond R Accessories for the Misses.. I attemped to remove the rear Hex screw and ended up stripping the head, so I got out my "easy outs". Well the heads of the factory screws are pretty soft and the easy out just ate into it.. Ok now I'm getting a bit pissed off so I get a extractor bit and drilled a pilot hole and try it.. NO LUCK !! My question is, wha't my next course of attack ?? Thanks 06 RSTD
  21. The local bike shop, privately owned, that I was gonna have do my yamaha venture carbs went ape sh*t on me... I also have a honda V65 Sabre and on Wednesday I took I ride out to his shop and wanted to buy 2 little screws that go into the cap on the clutch master cylinder...Evidently that was not the question of the day... I ended up being told I was stupid for not bringing the screw with me, of course the screw was outside on the bike, then I was threatened of being shot so I went to grab for my keys to get out of there and he pulled his fist back to hit me, says he thought I was reaching for a gun, I dont carry a gun and my pants were to tight to put a gun in the pocket anyway... So yes this was just a messed up day. I am still shocked, I just cant believe all I wanted was 2 screws and end up in a confrentation. I rode over to a friends house and told him what happened and he has kawasaki's, yamaha's and a few honda's and they all had the same size screws for the brake cylinder and clutch cylinder so I am not sure why the guy was having a fit over bring in the screws... I never wanted to hit someone so bad in all my life, good thing I didnt tho, I later found out his best freind is a deputy sheriff. go figure. I think he could learn a few lessons from how this group/forum runs and acts... On for a better day tho.. I finaly got a new full time job and see my yamaha venture getting fixed up somewhere else and being ridden on a road trip soon...
  22. Yep, I've put up with Taters for 26 years as of today...Don't know how I did it..loose screws and all. :rotf: HAPPY ANNIVERSARY SWEETHEART .
  23. ...Phillips head screws? I know Honda did in the early 70's. The screws were getting rounded because many people did not use the JIS standard drivers on them. So, me was wondering about Yammy. Decent page on JIS - http://www.instructables.com/id/When_a_Phillips_is_not_a_Phillips/step10/JIS-Japanese-Industrial-Standard/
  24. Taters went to see her surgeon on friday to have x rays taken of her broken wrist...good news..... it has healed perfectly....bad news....two of the screws holding the plates in her wrist has loosend and she will need another surgery next thursday to secure them...she has been complaining of numbness in her hand and thumb...seems that the screws are putting pressure on the nerves ....Here we go again.....one step foward, two steps back......time to make lemon ade.....
  25. I have ridden the 04 to work the last two days here in Michigan. Great! I went to another place of business today and when I went to put my gloves in the saddle bag the hinge came off on one side. That made the lid real loose if ya no what I mean. I put it back down in place and latched it up. Got back to the shop and opened it up to take a look. Had to take the "material" part of the hinge off (4) screws to get to the inside. Sure enough the front screw was completely out and the rear one was real loose. I grabbed the loctite and put them back in. Opened up the other saddle bag and both screws were really loose also. Any way a 10 minute job and all is well. Just thought I would share so maybe you can take the time at home to check them out so it don't happen on the road. Have a great Easter weekend.
