  1. Not on the bike, but in the little Miata we just got. It was absolutely beautiful with views of at least 50 miles it was so clear. I took a couple of pictures, but did not realize I had a big greasy spot on the lens that I did not notice until I put them on the laptop. This was around the Little Switzerland area. We got off at 80 and went toward Burnsville as the road toward Mt Mitchell was closed. RandyA
  2. Shipped my Road Glide seat off to Rick Butler this morning. I have put some miles on it and was pleasantly surprised with it for a stock seat. I've done a Saddle Sore and a Bun Burner on it so I know that I can do a thousand mile day on it with no major problems. There is still room for improvement though so I figured that with the snow on the ground, it was a great time to let him work his magic.
  3. http://bamarides.com/ride/ride-reports/lazy-leola-sunday/ check out some of the pictures... several very good shots...
  4. I have a 2012 RSV, and I'm having a problem with the passing lights. The right side will go off and come back on at random times going down the road. Has anyone experienced this problem? Both bulbs are new and still do the same thing. Thanks for any help.
  5. Looking forward to playing with the Venture I just got. 100% complete and it runs on ether. Looks like it's been leaking from several spot's for awhile and after this cup of coffee is done I'm gonna get back at making it roll. Trying to get it out a bit to see if the tranny is OK and whether or not it obviously is too far gone overall. If it's worth doing, I'll have the best running 500 dollar (purchase price) Venture out there by the end of the winter! Been wrenching a long time and enjoy the tinkering, cleaning stuff up, polishing and overall fun of not having to worry about riding ten miles down a dirt road that turns into a two track to find a cool camping spot. Have owned every Japanese make over the years as well as HD, the Yamaha's I've played with have always turned out to be the best ones. Rehabbed an 82 Virago 920 this summer and have that on the road still, a fun street fighter but not what I need to hit the interstate for a serious trip. At 52 this is my first ever bagger, I'm too burned out on the Then Came Bronson fantasy and as long as I aint wearing a sweat suit and riding a Goldwing my cred should still be good.
  6. I figured you would be pretty much parked for the winter but then saw this picture so I guess you are on the road again.
  7. today i was out doing laundry. when i saw a lady in the parking lot looking at the back right side of her car? i went out and she had a flat tire. she said she had no spare no jack nothing to change this or fix this tire. i went to work and got out my floor jack and huge 4 way tire wrench. with my knee i had a little trouble but got the tire off. told her to watch my laundry and i will be right back. i went down to kings tires just down the road to see if it could be patched? well the tire had a huge screw in it that came out the side wall. and the tire was pretty well shot. so i said hey do you have a used tire you could sell as they do have them. then i explained why i could not afford a new tire. the owner put on a brand new tire and just charged me for mounting. then said merry christmas. it,s people like you who do good things for others and i want to help pass it on. so i give a big A++++++++++++ to kings tire of lasalle IL the woman is now back on the road and the smile and thanks from her just made me feel all warm and fuzzy inside.
  8. Been xmas shopping at the HD shops. My wife really likes their cloths. High quality at a high price I tell her. She really came around with this new bike and has taken an interest in my riding. Im glad after 30 years on the road. Did you guys know that some Harleys have four wheels ? After a month of bickering with my salesperson at my local Ford dealer and a counrty search I bought a new truck. First time they were offered in white.
  9. We got up early this morning to go to early church, so we could go for possibly the last ride of 2012. We headed toward Indiana on the back roads, went to Brookville Lake first, then road to Liberty, Indiana and west of there to Connersville. Left there and road on 121 to catch route 52 to get back to West Harrison to get to our daughters for dinner. It was really windy. Supposed to be 68 out but with the sun covered with clouds and the wind blowing strong, we wore our leathers. I wound up put on my fleece face cover to keep the wind from blowing on my face. All and all though it was really nice to get to go on a nice long ride. The bike ran great. Nothing interesting to say, just sayin! Yama Mama
  10. I am thinking of running down to North Carolina and ride The Devils Whip. Anyone ride that road?
  11. T.J.

    Helmet cams

Well I finally got the bug to get a helmet cam after visiting Hockings Hills in Ohio for the second time this year. Went down the 11th, 12th and came back on the 13th of this month. What a great place to ride. Took 3 other riders with me this time. Just the guys and no wifes. They all want to do it every year. We road 200 miles in the area before coming back home. Anyway I would like to get a helmet cam. Been looking and reading about the "Replay XD 1080" and "Go Pro HD Hero 2". Anyone have one of these? Any thoughts. Thanks
  12. In a previous post, I mentioned getting a free one day rental from Appleton HD. The ride was taken last weekend and greatly enjoyed. I am starting this as a new thread since the topic has changed from 'what should I do with a free day of riding an HD' to 'What I did with a free day of riding an HD'. Also, want to provide my review of the HD as compared to the Venture. To begin with, let's review the dealer (Appleton HD). They are great. The sales folks on the floor were very knowledgeable of their product. There were a couple of esoteric questions they didn't know (fusing on the cig lighter - in case I needed to use my road compressor), but mostly, they knew their stuff. Their recommendation on a bike to take was also right on. Very impressive dealer. After looking at the selections (all the big bikes were available) and listening to their expertise, I chose a Road Glide Ultra. This is the same as the Ultra Classic but with a frame mounted fairing instead of a fork mounted fairing. The RG fairing was also about 8" further forward providing a much larger, less cramped feeling, riding compartment. Very nice. The RGU had all the bells and whistles. Radio, CB, Ipod interface - What?? No cassette??? ABS front and rear, 6 speed tranny, 103 ci of bone rattling power. The bike provided was totally stock. Rode the Venture up to pick up the bike Saturday at 11:00ish. They advised to just bring it back when I was done - even if it was after hours Sunday. Just drop the key thru the slot. Cool. Interestingly, parked next to a '90 blue Venture when I pulled in. Anyhoo, after the appropriate paperwork, they took me out to the bike and gave me an introduction - how everything works. I packed a change of clothing and various stuff in the cavernous saddle bags, threw on my helmet, plugged in my headset (yes, the plug is the same as the Venture), and took off. The Venture was resting comfortably under their overhang under the watchful eyes of a security camera. Really a nice setup. Wanted to get my money's worth out of this free rental, so I took off for BBQ. Original destination was Kansas City, MO. Unfortunately, a series of items prevented me from making it that far in time to beat closing at Arthur Bryant's BBQ. First - It wasn't an hour before I started squirming on the stock seat. Was also getting the little pain between the shoulder blades that is indicative of handle bars that don't pull back far enough. Couldn't ride more than about 100-125 miles before needing to stop and stretch. Frustrating. Added the Airhawk to the seat and that helped some. Also added the sheepskin and the seat/butt issue was mostly resolved. Nothing I could do about the back pain. Also, there were no highway pegs so not much room to move around the legs. Second - My 6 year old Zumo 550 battery quickly ran out of juice. It is never run without a hard wired power source, so I'm sure the battery is pretty much toast. So, I plugged in the charger to the cig lighter (had a cig lighter to USB converter). Unfortunately, you can't operate the Zumo and change it in this way at the same time. Oh well, I know where I am going - at least up to hitting KC. So I thought. Missed the split to HWY 151 from Hwy 61 south of Dubuque, IA. Therefore, added about 60 miles by detouring thru Davenport. That combined with having to stop too often meant KC wasn't going to happen. However, all was not lost. I found an amazing BBQ joint in Des Moines, IA. SmokeyD's BBQ (http://www.smokeydsbbq.com). They have won an impressive number of contests both locally and nationally. And it tasted like it. Had a combo of pulled pork and brisket and they were both amazing - especially the brisket. I WILL go there again. Found a cheap hotel just outside of Des Moines since I was not in any hurry to get back. Was on the road at about 7:15 Sunday morning under a clear sunny sky and about 45 degrees. Beautiful weather. Took the missed 151 back to Dubuque, crossed into Wisconsin, and then proceeded to head up the Great River Road. I figured there was enough experience on the slab, need to see how it works in some curves. Stopped at Dewey Nelson State Park just north of Cassville and took some pictures. Road along the WI River on Hwy 60 all the way to Columbus. Stopped in Fox Lake to show the bike to Scooter Bob, stopped by the house to show the bike to my boys, and then headed back to Appleton. Had to run past about 15 miles to get the mileage over 1000. All in all, a great weekend was had. The next installments will have pictures and an evaluation/comparison. RR
  13. No, not a Harley. Linda and I were taking a ride down a country road that I had never been on before in SW VA and came around a blind curve and walking across the road was a big black hog. He was just taking his time and did not hurry one bit when I came toward him. I guess one of the good things about losing the vision in my right eye is I am a lot more cautious about coming around a blind curve and not out driving farther than I can see. Fortunately, in this case, I was able to avoid the hog as I don't think it would have turned out good for any of us. RandyA
  14. I've read on this happening to others and could use a little input. My 03 Venture I have installed an HID headlight bulb I installed as instructed running Power and ground from Battery installing a switch with a small dash light to insure power and plugged into the original headlight connector, Now it lights right off but will go out some times as soon as I hit the road others times later down the road, once I get rolling on down a long ride it seems to stay though I haven't gone far when sun is down. I had noticed that the old h4 bulb(55w-100w) would seam to go dim then brighten before but had thought it only got bright when charging system kicked in as my driving lights work to keep road lit so maybe it was going out also. Now in my years of spinning wrenches though the years to me it sounds like a bad ground any input would help thanks.
  15. Well, we made it back Saturday afternoon. Ran the Dragon, Moonshiner 28 down into Georgia and the Cherohala Skyway. Went to Clingmans Dome, almost had a heart attack walking up, but worth it once you see the view. Beautiful scenery. Thare aren't any roads like that here in Michigan. Personally, I think the Moonshiner 28 is an under rated road. That thing was very technical. Every bit as much as the dragon. Especially with the trailer on the back! I will definately go back and ride them again.
  16. I've done parts of this route on separate rides before, but when you string them together, it is an awesome day of riding, especially with the clear, cooler weather we have now. Left just north of Atlanta at 0700 yesterday heading north up 575/515 to Blue Ridge, then up Rt. 5 to McCaysville into TN, then up Rt. 68 to Tellico Plains where we picked up the western point of the Cherohala Skyway and took it all the way to Robbinsville NC. If you have not ridden this before, put it on your bucket list - - it's one of the best 60+ mile stretches of road you'll ever ride. Then up US129 to the Dragon, which I have to say was way too crowded to really enjoy yesterday, but it's still a fun, twistie ride. At the top of the Dragon, we took the Parkway on a long, lazy ride to US321 south, stopping at a few scenic overlook areas to just take in the amazing views and do some bald eagle watching. We jumped off 321 onto SR337, aka Lamar Alexander Parkway, for a great ride along the Little River all the way to just south of Gatlinburg. On the bummer side, we came upon an accident scene where a biker ran off the road heading in the opposite direction. Don't know their fate, but the bike (looked like a Road King) was clear down the embankment and in the water. Hope they were OK. From Gatlinburg, we headed south on US441 through the Great Smokey Mountain National Forest to Cherokee NC, then back southwest on US74 to Andrews, Murphy, then SR60 to Blue Ridge GA, then back home down I-575. 14 hours, 475 miles, multiple stops for food and sightseeing, and capped off with a hot toddy and some much needed Advil! If you are looking for the ultimate Fall leaf peeping ride down this way, this one would be hard to beat. The colors aren't fully in yet, but the next 30 days or so will be spectacular, and the long range weather forecast at least for the next few weeks is supposed to be very cooperative - - 70's during the day and chilly but not cold at night. We plan to hit all or parts of this route again before the end of October if the kids and grandkids will let us get away, along with side trips already planned for Savannah later this week and Thunder Beach (Panama City Beach) in 3 weeks. Time to stock up on more Advil!
  17. Saturday I got to take a ride I've wanted to do for a while over Wolf Creek pass (Hwy 35 from Woodland to Hanna, UT). What a great ride and the colors are in the midst of changing. Just off of the Hwy is Mill Hollow Reservoir. Jan and I worked at a school education camp by the reservoir, when we met 33 years ago. The guy I was riding with asked if I had ever been up that road.....YES!!! Even though it was gravel road with washboards, we went the three miles up and back. What great memories. We have a painting of the lake from the same perspective as the attached picture. http://i470.photobucket.com/albums/rr70/utadventure/MillHollow_zpse74f96d1.jpg http://i470.photobucket.com/albums/rr70/utadventure/MillHollow2_zps1111a1dd.jpg
  18. I hate it but!!!!!!this guy gets even http://www.autoblog.com/2012/07/30/angry-merging-motorist-gets-clever-revenge/?ncid=txtlnkwbauto00000002
  19. I was tooling down the road the other day and the vulchures were having lunch in the middle of the road. I though I would give a toot so they might dispirse BEFORE I got there. My stebel sort of made this squeaky sound and after maybe 3-5 seconds it finnaly started to sound like it use to. I tried it again a couple times today and same sort of deal. Any ideas? Do I maybe need a small shot of WD 40 in the intake of the horn so the compressor picks it up? I hate to think I'm gonna have to replace it.
  20. I was about 20 minutes into a nice ride yesterday and heard a strange noise from the front engine or tire area. The only way to describe it was as if the bike had run over a flattened pop can in the road. Short rasp and it was gone not to appear the rest of the day. No big thing. Today I am riding and the same noise appeared. Short rasp and it did not come back. Bike ran fine. There was nothing in the road that I saw and I watch carefully for rough surfaces when riding. Anybody ever experience somthing like this? I have an 03 RSTD with about 15K on it.
  21. The wife and I got back Friday after visiting Hocking Hills area. Some real nice riding around there and a lot to get off the bike and see on foot. We left Thursday morning and headed North east and road the scenic ByWays. When the road drops off ahead of you where you can't see it any more until you are on the down side of the hill, can take your breath away. Some great riding in Ohio on the east side. Great roads. We got 850 miles put on our trip. Thanks Ohio.
  22. I was riding through town when a blond in a big black SUV pulled out of a side road. She turned left and I thought she would pull in behind me. Instead she came across the road directly at me, she was still looking left. She would have hit me if I hadn't leaned on the horn. Instead of stopping or going behind me she drove all the way down the block beside me on the wrong side of the road. New one on me.
  23. found this one on ebay...tell me what you think? i dont know anything about the 1700cc RS., thanks.http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/2006-Yamaha-RoadStar-Midnight-Silverado-XV1700-Many-Extras-New-Pics-Show-Winner-/261088395944?forcev4exp=true#ht_4223wt_1165.
  24. OK your busted Miller47 shame on you for getting such a big head start on the Eureka Springs Meet & Eat and leaving us here to ride in the rain all by ourselves. Hey that scoot and trailer looked good going down the road. You two have a safe ride up and hopefully will see you there. Issac may be weakening some
  25. Any of you guys from Kentucky or Virginia rode this road. Looks like a fun one.
