  1. Noticed a while back that it seems like the rear of my Venture "feels" lower. Got another bike and wasn't sure if it was just my imagination or not. Then a buddy who I was riding behind asked if my headlight was on bright (it wasn't). Tried adjusting the headlight, hadn't before, but it still seemed the headlight was high, which would be right if the rear was low. Checked the rear shock but saw no fluid leakage, aired it up and it held, at least for a while. The shock was replaced about a year ago, had puked its guts out, can't really remember any change after the shock was replaced, but not sure. Bikes still under warrenty, an 08, think I'm going to depanel a little and see what I can see. Any ideas? Thanks, Sam
  2. I am having my rear tire replaced this weekend. What final drive work should i have done while the wheel is off? I have heard that the rear splines need to be serviced. Is this a good time for that? Thanks Al
  3. I have been chasing down a charging system problem. On the recommendationof a fellow rider, I replaced the stator. Charging system warning light still flashes. The new gasket that I had put on the side cover when I replaced the stator was leaking, so I went to replace it. Now, I can't get the transmission to shift out of first. I thought that maybe I had spun the shifter linkage when I put the cover back on, so I looked it the linkage and it appears to be ok. Put it all back together again, went to start it. It turned over for a few seconds then stopped. Now the clock reset itself, and when I turn the key to the "on" position, the clock goes dead and nothing is functioning. I am beyong frustrated and have no ideas where to go from here. Is it time to get rid of it?
  4. I have a 2003 rsv with 64k miles on it , there is a chirping noise coming from the area around the universal joint. I am wondering if anyone has serviced or replaced theirs, what is involved and how hard a job is it?
  5. I ordered the progressive front fork springs, am I supposed to change the seals at the same time? Changing the seals looks a lot more involved than I'd be able to do. How do you know when they need replaced? Thx!
  6. was install the wind deflectors in the crash bars... So far have replaced the right crash bar (almost) and replaced the broken tabs on the right lower fairing. But then I found an intake leak behind the right air filter, and the drain tube not connected to the rear of the right air box. Well there is no dirt or oil in the intake piping now... Maybe I'll have the wind deflectors on by kbran's MD
  7. With riding season rapidly approaching (although I do commute year round on the scoot) I decided to make a sojourn up to the wilds of PA and visit Skydoc. So a call was placed about three months ago to start the planning and make sure everything was ready for my arrival. So the following was done to get the scoot back to my standards: 1. Valve Cover gaskets replaced with 2nd Gen gaskets; oil is meant to be on the inside. 2. Speedo cable replaced becuase I "lost" the center portion of the cable. Actually the cable came off and the center section is somewhere on I-95 between DC and Woodbridge. 3. Anti-Dives replaced with Skydoc's block-off plates. This really cleaned up the front fork section and got rid of an annoying clicking I was having when the forks were compressed. While we were there we went ahead and replaced the fork oil with 15 wt stuff. 4. New to me mufflers installed. The ones I modified (butchered) were in rough shape before I hacked on them so I was happy to replace them with the ones Skydoc had "lying" around. Heck after a little Naval Jelly and elbow grease this things came out looking damn good. 5. Carb tuning and sync; still chasing a small idle circuit demon and an occasional backfire when slamming the throttle shut from WOT but all in all this is a huge improvement over the way it ran when Skydoc pulled it into the garage. 6. Mink oil treatment to seat; this was a Mrs Skydoc (Jean) special and it really helped the looks and softness of the seat material. Also has the added benefit of repelling dirt and water. 7. Radiator mount repair and drain repair. I can honestly say this is the best the scoot has run since I bought it back in August 2010. A special thanks to Skydoc (Earl) and Jean, they were perfect hosts and I truly felt spolied while I was there; much to the chagrin of the wife . Also, the spare parts (where all First Gen VR Mk II's go when they die) bikes came in handy for the misc connectors and parts. I really could not have picked a better place or people to help get my scoot back to near perfect operation.
  8. Are there instructions that deal with the skydoc upgrade only. I want to do it once and not have do it again cause I replaced the wrong disc.
  9. Trying to get a few things caught up before I go in next week on the 12th to have my left knee replacement done. Saw the Dr. and the joint is shot bone on bone. Had the right one replaced 2 years ago and its great ( hope this one ends up the same way.) At least doing it now will have me ready to ride come spring. Hope everyone has a fun winter. Steve
  10. New to the forum and first post. I have a 1983 Venture that I am using for the power plant for a Reverse Trike, now I know that a few will sat why not just ride on 2. I have had some major injuries that prevents this from happening. I started with a failed project that someone had got in a hurry to complete, so I brought it to my shop so that I could get some wind in my face. I tore the whole thing apart after I got the venture running, it had not been started for 2 years and the valves stuck for a few minutes, but after some Sea Foam they cleared up and it ran pretty good for something that had not run for 2 years. I then disconnected all the relays and the TCI from the wiring harness to do my welding for the pan and roll cage. Well 2 months later I decide to hook everything back up and test run the engine again. Well it wouldn't start after plugging everything back up so here is what has been done so far: Cleaned all grounds Replaced Carb Diaphrams Replaced Coils replaced plug wires checked fuel pump and relay removed TCI from under frame Repaired starter Here is the problem I don't get fire from number 4 plug. I can get fire from #4 plug if I unplug #3 coil and plug it into #4 coil I get fire to #4 plug. This must sound like I am rambling but I really don't know where to look next for the answer. Any help you can give will be greatly appreciated. Happy Holidays to everyone on the board!
  11. I have an 08 RSV. In June, I was getting an average of 44 MPG (). In July, I changed the plugs to NGK Iridium, replaced the air filters with K&N, and replaced the fuel filter with a Purolator (??) recommended on this board. Since then, my gas mileage has dropped of dramatically (avg of 38 mpg, one-up, highway driving @ 55). Last month, in an effort to understand my loss of gas mileage, I pulled the plug caps (which all measured @ 9.6k ohms), and changed the plugs back to the stock NGKs, and synched the carbs. Over the last month, my gas mileage has dropped to approx 34 MPG...this represents a 10 MPG drop over the last 5 months... Today, I cleaned and charged the air filters...I'm not overly optimistic at this point. Any help or suggestions would be reatly appreciated...I'm running out of ideas!
  12. A couple of weeks ago I posted that the tabs in the fairing where the bolt go that hold the windshield in place were broken. Today Berkeley Yamaha replaced that part of the fairing. While they were in there they found some other stuff that was jacked up and fixed that too. Cost to me $0. I must say, their reputation of going above and beyond is really true. Thanks to everyone that suggested I take it back to the dealer.
  13. The factory headset cable (the one that clips to the side of the "tank cover" on my '86 VR, appears to have a short in it. The right channel comes and goes and is getting worse. Has anyone replaced this cable and what is involved? I am guessing that it might be available from Yamaha, but anyone have a known good one they want to part with? Thanks
  14. Sorry if these questions are answered elsewhere...but I HAVE (honest!) done quite a bit of reading and not found some of them (I swear!!) 1. What percentage of replaced rear shocks are done in/out of warranty (can I see a show of hands?) I only ask because no one seems TOO pissed about having to spend 500 bucks on a hardly used machine! 2. Is there a "Remove and Replace" step-by-step description of the job anywhere on our site? (I've seen several comments regarding how much OTHER crap actually has to be removed to get at the shock....but no DEFINITIVE procedure.) 3. Of all you guys who HAVE replaced these at your own expense...what all different brands have been used? i.e. How many of you went with Works.....how many YSS.....etc. AND, are you happy with your solution...AND how much DID it cost you? 4. Last but not least.......I'm not REAL anxious to crawl under my bike and/or hoist it up on a jack before I absolutely have to...so, if I procrastinate (as I usually do on stuff like this) will I be one VERY sorry guy, stuck out in the boondocks when the thing finally goes COMPLETELY south on me (it's only leaked a couple of ounces of oil so far...but is still working not too badly.) Will I be left sitting with a wheel/tire jammed so far up under my fender that I'll have to call CAA? Thanks for as many answers as you have time for. Mike P.S. I'm out of warranty....it's an '03.....so I gotta say I'M pretty pissed that I'm spending this much money for a 'mission critical' part on a bike with only 34,000KM on it. (20Kmiles). It's not the quality I've come to expect from ANYTHING Japanese. (Toyota Camry jokes notwithstanding........cause I own one of those, too!.....but at least that was paid for by the company......and it didn't sack out my rear wheels!)
  15. Anyone have any idea how long Ride On last in a tire? If the tire is not removed should it be okay or is this designed to be replaced before the tire wears out?
  16. I had my right hip replaced August 2nd. I am doing great. My doc has secured my agreement that I'd wait 3 months before getting back on the bike. He seems to think less time than that would be chancy. So I am waiting and we'll look at riding then. My question is for those who've had a hip replaced ... how long post surgery before you were riding again?
  17. ... its quite nimble with the windshield removed and new Avon Venoms on it. I was very happy with the way my 08 RSTD handled Saturday on the ride to NE TN. I replaced the rear Bridgestone just after Vogel last fall with a Venom. The handling was a bit better but not as good as I would have liked. Just replaced the front BS with a 130 width H rated Avon Venom and the bike handles noticeably better. Its certainly not as nimble as my Triumph, which is 300lbs lighter, but its pretty good. fyi. I mistakenly ordered a V-rated rear Venom. Avon customer support says that the V-rated is intended for the V-Max, and has a softer rubber compound than the recommended H-rated rear. So, I probably won't get as much mileage from it, but it feels good on the road.
  18. Actually it just stopped working... gradually. So I knew it had a leak. Took it over to the Firestone Store to have it charged. They reported two leaks. One in the Compressor and one of the valves. To fix it?? A grand. I don't think so.... Went to another repair shop recommended by my son-in-law. He said they all leak a little, charged it up, and replaced one schraeder. $60 bucks total. Firestone has lost any of my future business..... Should I stop by and tell 'm where to stick it....??
  19. Keep in mind, I'm no wrencher. I fancy myself a good problem solver, but generally have stuck to electrical, software, etc... Mechanical stuff (things with engines) have always scared me. But with help (especially from Sleeperhawk and Wanderer when I first got the bike) from all the VR crowd and this amazing site, here's what I've done to the bike in the last couple months: REmoved front tire Checked front brakes Got new tire and reinstalled (perelli rear reversed) REmoved rear tire replaced rear brake pads greased splines and hub finger thingydings replaced rear tire (kumho- darkside experiement in process) Added Wolo horn with carbon one's bracket and harness dynamic clusters in blinkers harley taillight bar lightbar under trunk (soon blink/brakes with Ponch's help) Installed Mic Mutes removed casette deck and made storage area diamond R drink holder (and have backup koozie for the tank cap) replaced missing chrome spacer for saddlebag installed extra cig lighter under seat installed back-off unit installed custom wiring block to wire up the rear lights and make it easy to add more (my own experiment in beta testing) rewired the trailer lighting harness to fix a short installed signal stabilizer (still intermittent fast blink though) Cut windshield down to shorty installed butler seat and bag nuts rk pipes with heat shields from stock pipes riveted on to hide connection installed buddy rich cable installed iphone cradle installed zumo 765t chrome trim on saddlebags and bottom of tank Changed front speakers to polk's Tightened steering head bearings (dang they were loose) change oil change battery Here's the immediate to do list- some lighting for the side of the bike- running lights more lighting in rear kuryakan volt meter on dash Installing a aux jack in the underside of fairing (new idea I have. if it works, I'll write it up) add extra 12v power jack to underside of fairing on right side('nother experiment of mine) f4 shield install (dang when will that thing get here?) make and install leveling links Couldn't have done it without VR and all of you guys in here (and gals). Thanks for everything. I must have gotten at least $1200 out of my $12 already!! Amazing site full of amazing people.
  20. At some point in the future, if your helmet stinks, it's damaged and should be replaced. It will be interesting to see if this makes it to market. I can see the application. Odd how widely diversified opinions are about helmets. One drop from the seat and it needs to be replaced... I've dropped mine from the second story and it don't look too bad. Which one are you? Here's the story.
  21. Tried to go for a ride today--No luck---battery was dead---I jumped it and rode for 30 minutes then turned her off--nothing on the restart attempt but a slow Grrrrr then tick- tick:doh:---I have only had the bike for about 2 weeks but the previous owner gave me paperwork showing that he had replaced Battery-starter-stator all in November of last year.........I jumped it off again and while it was running I removed the ground cable--she kept on running--also the voltage meter shows it is charging just fine......think I just got a Bad "new" battery?---............................Larry
  22. Ive got a 1984 1300 voyager that is having overheat problems. Ive flushed the system, replaced the thermostat. any help will be greatly appreaceted.
  23. Just got back from Charlene's second follow up for her spine surgery, which went very well, she is healing up fine, back pain is gone, at the same office we had an appointment with another surgeon to look at her hip and knee, she will be having her right hip replaced sometime in May, which is just around the corner, she is releived that we are moving on a lot quicker than we expected. I think if it were me I would have contacted Dr. "K" by now....but she has put up with more than I ever could, then if she still needs it the knee will be replaced next. Charlene spoke to the Dr. office today and the date is set for May 19, so in a little over 2 1/2 weeks back to the hospital. Like I have said before, this is her rebuilding year...........
  24. Has anyone had an issue with to much SeaFoam fouling your plugs? I ran about 1/4 tank of fuel, and an entire can of SeaFoam to clean my carbs. Now my plugs are shot. I had to replace them just to get it to run. However, that being said one thing I noticed, is only the drivers rear cylinder was running. I could, and did, unplug all 3 other plug wires, and it ran. But if you unplug drivers rear plug wire, it won't run. After that replaced the plugs, with used, as did not have new. Will get new plugs today. It is running again. But, still seems to be a a bit rough. I know the carbs have never been synced, as the little brass plugs are still on the carbs. So, gotta figure this problem out now. Sheesh, what's next? So far, has new wires, new plugs-now a bit fouled, replaced the fuel pump and filter, replaced the selector valve on the tank, regluing all the plastic fairing pieces. Still needs the clutch bearing fixed. I am hoping this is not a money pit.
  25. Thanks very much for all the help I got in getting my 88 Venture running. I had bought this bike as a non-runner. A friend put me on to it since he knew I was looking for a 88 Wing and he had a friend that had medical problems and needed to get rid of his Venture (I had never heard of a Venture). Clutch did not work so rebuilt master and slave (I would never of believed that the slave would come out of that little hole if it had not been for the posts) brakes needed bleeding. There was a mouse house in the radio compartment. Needed a new battery. Very very bad gas in the tank. Choke would not move because of dried gas. Carbs were gunked up so I replaced every rubber part in carbs (did not know Yamaha rubber could be so expensive) I did get the diaphrams from ebay. I also replaced the carb screws with stainless socket screws. I did do the resistor thing to get the bat light to go off. Repaired the securing pins for the side covers. Replaced fuel filter and changed oil, filter and rear end grease. Changed the o-ring in the draining/running valve. Replaced spark plug wires caps and spark plugs. Got progressive springs for front. Polish clean polish clean polish clean. Got the carbs back on hit the started and started right up!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Sync the carbs, got new tags and insurance, got it off the work table and took the first ride. What a change from rideing smaller bikes. I was surprised how good it sounds, I thought it would sound more like a Wing but sounds more like my Trident. I took it up on the 4lane and pushed it a little when I checked my speed I was doing 75 and I was not realy pushing it. Looks like I have a bike I can take a trip on with less than 40000 miles and a total investment of about $2800. This would not of been possible without all of your help. Thanks, Ed
