  1. On Sunday, Doreen and I went for a ride. It was a beautiful day, sun shining, slight breeze and not very hot. As we were Westbound on SD HWY 34 about 10 miles from home, we were passed by a soft-top Jeep. I had been watching it catch up to us for a bit as we were only cruising about 55-60 MPH in a 65 MPH Zone. After the Jeep went by, I got a great surprise. A great looking MK II (in BLUE!) went by us. They must have had a strict time table to keep as they were going about 70-75. I was able to keep them in sight until they turned North on SD HWY 25. We were headed to DeSmet, SD and headed up the same highway. I thought that we might see them in DeSmet but no luck there. They must not have been members here. They by-passed a perfectly good Dairy Queen!! If it was anyone here, I hope you had a great ride and if you get back in the area, feel free to contact me. Madison has a fantastic DQ! Stay Safe, Dave
  2. It's been a while since I have had a tach on the bike so to me the #'s are a bit high, but could be wrong. 45 mph, 5 gear, 2k 50 mph, 5 gear, 21k (small gap between the 2k bar and the needle) Thanks
  3. Bike is smooth as glass at 80 in 5th gear, but at 65 gets very buzzy, same with third gear is nice and smooth at 55 mph, but gets buzzy at 35 mph. (would carb pilot circuit do this?- have new pilot jets on order) Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Thanks..

    100 mph birthday cake

They chose the only model Venture truly worthy of such an occasion during this kind of meet, and they escorted it with a bike that should have been able to keep up with it, but... after the cake rounded the next corner the Goldwing hit a 100 mph and the birthday cake on that 1st gen was still getting further and further ahead... 5. I decided to run with Shell V-Power High Test ($1.43L)($6.50 a Gallon)gas I found that the FJR ran much smoother than my other Brand The Overall average for Gas Mileage was 54.94 mpg with speeds min of 118kph/73,23 mph to a top end of 173kph /107.43 mph and this is a guy who weighs 255 lbs and lots of gear ( IM IMPRESSED) The FJR holds 25 litres or 5,5 gallons of full travelling at 120 kph or 74.54 mph before hitting reserve I used 19.7 litres or 4.33 gallons of Fuel I managed to get 374.2kms or 232.4 miles
  6. After about three weeks of poor weather, work and other things. The wife and I finally got a few miles in. (even if it was on the wing) We rode about 40 miles one way for coffie. Despite the 40 mph cross winds at times she managed a few pic's and that cup of Tim Hortons coffie never tasted so good. The only problem was that it was only 40 miles home:cool10:
  7. OK, I have done everything I can think of on this bike and it still runs like my old 59 Harley PanHead. When you roll back on the throttle it runs like you are in 5th gear at 45 MPH. I am doing 70 when I do this and it vibrates and feels like you are lugging the moter. I have reset the fuel/air mixture, synced the carbs, changed the plugs and air filters. Checked all vacum lines and the fuel tank vent tube. I am at a loss on why this bike runs like an old v twin Harley. It is not smooth when you throttle up and no I am not lugging it. If I am then it is a piss poor design that you have to be doing 75/80 when you shift to 5th and it still does it. Today I had a 25/30 mph head wind and it vibrated so bad when attempting to pick up speed at 65 mph that the handlebars were shaking. I even had it in the Yamaha shop and the rechecked the sync and said it was dead on and they said they couldn't find anything wrong with the bike. What do they run like if the valves are off? Is there any timing that can be done? Any ideas? Thanks Rick
  8. my wife wanted to take a ride to Roanoke Va. today, about 130 miles each direction. i decided that since the max speed limit anywhere i drove today would be 65 mph max, that i would make the entire trip in fourth gear. 98% of my riding is two up and my gas mileage lately has been around 33mpg but that was using fifth gear. my max speed today was 70 mph indicated on the speedo and if mine is 7% off then i was actually doing around 65 mph. the terrain from where i live to Roanoke is mildly hilly, so driving @ 65 in fourth kept the rpms in basically the sweet spot and especially pulling the hills. on my refill on the way back home the odo was showing 180 miles and it took 4.3 gals. to top it off - so essentially i got 42 mpg, which is 9 mpg better than i was previously getting. i would like to open up this strategy for discussion, such as pros/cons of fourth gear engine rpms vs. fifth gear engine rpms on longer trips. can anyone with a tach on the rsv or rstd tell me the rpms @ 70 mph indicated in fourth gear vs. rpms @ 70 mph indicated in fifth gear. i understand that fourth gear is technically an overdrive gear but am interested in your opinions. looking forward to the discussion, thanks ! buz
  9. http://www.ketv.com/images/structures/buttons/button_enlarge.gif http://www.ketv.com/2011/0418/27586748_240X180.jpg OMAHA, Neb. -- A 22-year-old faces charges in two states after a chase that reached speeds of 120 mph Monday. Iowa State Patrol troopers said they tried to stop Justin Mandina for going 72 mph in a 55 mph zone as he rode a motorcycle north on Interstate 29. Mandina turned around at Ninth Avenue and continued south on to Interstate 80. As officers followed him west on I-80, authorities said the chase reached speeds of 120 mph. The Iowa State Patrol had just called off the chase as they crossed into Nebraska when Mandina lost control of the bike and flipped it several times near the 13th Street exit ramp. Mandina was taken to Creighton University Medical Center, but he was alert and standing after the crash, according to authorities. Mandina told the state patrol he took off because he didn't have a motorcycle license or insurance. He now faces several charges in Iowa and Nebraska. Kid is lucky to be in one piece. Must of had enough sense to wear some protective gear at least. I run this stretch of road every day and see these kids blasting through traffic on a way too regular basis. Damn shame he didn't have enough sense to just stop and take the tickets and deal with it. I suppose it might be a while before he can find affordable bike insurance now. Oh wait! He won't be needing it!
  10. I got my Speedo-Healer in the mail and want to install it. I looked at the install pictorial I found and I just have one question. When my speedometer indicates 110 kph I am actually doing 100 kph. When I read the install instructions it mentions activating the km/h to mph conversion feature it states, "You have to program +60.9% (1.609 multiplier) on top of the calibration value you need. I'm thinking this unit is built where metric is the standard and this is not necessary unless you use MPH. Any comments or suggestions appreciated. Chris in Red Deer, Alberta
  11. I'm under warranty so no worries. Anyhow when I am going up a slight grade with the cruise on it seems to drop excessively, like say 6-8 mph. Of course when it does this the cruise kicks out and my RES light illuminates. Now then it also has a slight "slobber" at idle and smells a little rich. Its a 09 with 3,200 miles. Thinking hit a tank with sea foam first before trip to dealer??? It has the power no problem, but I seem to have to "twist" it up pretty hard on a grade. Also OD or fifth gear seems a little too high at 65 mph. Almost feels like OD would be on the flat or speeds over 75. Is this some of my bogging down problem
  12. I'm not a new member, but a first time poster. I have spent the last six months soaking up information from this forum but haven't run across this topic. I bought a 1999 venture in September. I like the bike very much, but something about it is driving me crazy. When I ride 70 mph I get 30 mpg. When I run 80-85 mph I get 40-42 mpg. I like 40-42 the best.It has aftermarket mufflers and the AIS is plugged. That's the extent of what I know about the bike. Synchronizing the carbs haven't made a difference. If I'm doing it correctly. Changed the plugs twice. I'm pretty sure I know how to do that. The bike seems to run smoother(no mirror vibration) at higher speeds(very little vibration) at slower speeds, but I have no problem with how it runs at slower speeds except for the millage. Suggestions greatly appreciated. The wifey is starting to have questions. This the the best forum I've ever belonged to. Thanks Richard
  13. I am leaving Charlotte, NC and riding 4600 miles out to AZ on I20 & I10 and back via Grand Canyon, Monument Valley, Four Corners, Amarillo, Texarkana, Nashville and home on I40. Can I average 55 mph? There are two of us, both on Ventures. I would like to make it in 10 or 11 days.
  14. Commuting to work today about 65 mph with cruise control on and felt a slight hesitation and then a very loud squeal. Pulled over to the shoulder to check things out. Did not see anything abnormal. Got rolling again and when I started passing 40 MPH the sound came back again and the entire bike seemed to be very rough. Called a tow truck and had the bike dropped off at the shop. The shop could not find anything wrong. Anyone else ever experience this? I suspect the front brakes were binding or a bad bearing. Shop said the brakes and bearings were good. John in San Diego
  15. Even though it rained all day I still got my annual New Years day ride in.The rain was coming down hard at times but the Frogg Toggs did their job.I didn't get over 25 mph or more than 20 miles from home so that makes for a long day. Can't figure out whats wrong with people,I didn't see another bike all day long.
  16. Over the years, I've seen posts from several people who have claimed that the top speed on their RSV is about 90 MPH. I've never understood that and am now wondering how many here have bikes that top out around that speed. What got me thinking about this was that over the past months my bike was not running well. A couple of weeks ago, I opened it up and found that 90 MPH was all it would do. Now I had had mine to close to 120 MPH in the past so obviously something was wrong. Unfortunately, I got frustrated and took somewhat of a "shotgun" approach to the problem and so don't know just exactly what corrected my problem. I changed plugs but had done that before so I know it wasn't the problem. I also changed my number 3 coil which I think was breaking down under load. I pulled the carbs and reset the floats. One was a bit high. I also suspect that the air box was not seated good on top of at least one of the carbs. The bottom line is that when I was done, I took it out again and it runs like I knew it should. Acceleration is very strong and I took it up to about 112 and it was still climbing pretty good. I have the Speedohealer so that is true speed. I was later talking to my friend Bob Dakin and he told me that his Midnight Venture has never run faster than about 90 since the day that he bought it. I am convinced that there is a problem with his and he is going to come over one day soon so that we can figure it out. How many of YOU have the same problem? If your bike tops out under 100 MPH, I am sure that there is a problem and I don't think it would be that difficult to figure it out.
  17. I worked with Al for 30+ years and having both recently retired together we had become regular riding buddies. His latest restoration was a 1977 Suzuki GT500, that he had spent many hours bringing back to shape. Not 2 miles from home today on the 'Uki he was t-boned by a 91 year old coming out of a stop sign onto a 50 mph highway. Al was truly "one of the good ones", I don't think I had ever seen him upset, just an easy going guy. He will be sorely missed. A sad, sad time!
  18. Is there a fix for 1st Gen Speedometer error. Mine is off 6-7 mph at 35 mph and at higher speeds it is off by 10 or more mph. Now I calculated this with those radar speed signs and by doing mile markers on the highway. (Its reading a higher speed than I'm travelling.)
  19. Just bought my first venture 2000 and speedo is over ten mph off. Looking forward to all the help. thanks
  20. I just got a 1986 Venture Royale with 33,000 miles on it.We just took it on a 1200 mile loop thru California and all went well. On freeway riding my rpms were arond 3800 to 4100 for speeds between 65 to75 mph. Does that sound normal for that speed and is that motor happy running that speed all day long? I'm used to lower rpm's as my last bike was a road king.
  21. While I realize there have been about a zillion and a half threads about people 'realizing' that their speedometer calibration is off, using a speed-o-healer, ignoring it all together, etc etc. I had an interesting realization last night while I was avoiding being pulled over puttering back across Vancouver. Last Christmas I received a Ram-Mount for one of the GPSes I have. I have now used it twice (both times in Vancouver) Partially because I have it so why not, and partially to make sure that I know how fast I am going in the appropriate units. As we all [most likely] know, the MPH side of the speedometer (on U.S. models at least) is off by 5-10% depending on who you ask, where you check it and most importantly whether you are using your turbo attachment or not. All kidding aside, I have found now through a speed range of ~10 to ~60 mph (10 to 100 kph) checked at intervals that were distinctly marked (ie 20, 40, 60, 80, 100) I found that with the speed held reasonably constant the GPS read a speed that matched exactly (obviously within the error of the width of the needle). Now this had me curious. Upon closer inspection I found (on my bike, which I presume is the same on others) that the MPH scale is not aligned properly with the KPH scale which contributes to the incorrect speed indication. Now before you say 'oh that guy is an idiot, of course it isn't perfectly aligned because the needle has to point towards the numbers and being that the radii of the curvatures of the speed range indicators are diffrent and the 'needle' points radially outward but is not a perfect , of course they wouldn't look visually aligned'. I solved this issue by looking at how fast my indicated speed was in KPH both on GPS and on the speedometer and verified that while the reading in KPH was correct, the needle was pointing to the wrong point on the MPH scale. So, how is that for a fun fact? By the way, I am in Canada where they use KPH -- which is why I have the GPS set to KPH and am paying attention to that. Anyhoot, just thought I would share my findings while I try to wake up enough to get some work done.
  22. http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g51/hunter1500/th_TracyRoad001.jpg It's a great road. It's called Tracy Road and people will ride 100 miles just to ride that road. When I was going across the ferry there was a girl that had made that 100 mile ride just to go on it. She was riding a Kaw 1200r. You will notice about half way through the video a sportbike that was flying. I was doing up to 80 in some parts. The camera makes the turns look a lot less curvy then they are. Most are 25 to 35 mph and a couple are 20 mph.
  23. Ok, I know this subject has been written about many times. Please trust that I have read many posts on the whine. My issue does seem to be a bit different than the others I have read, so here goes. I have a 08 RSTD. Bought it used last November and loved it from the first time I sat on it. Had a 04 BMW R1150RT that I never did never "clicked" with. Not the RSTD, it was love at first ride. I read as much as I could find on the whine as soon as I joined VentureRider. After getting what I think is a pretty good understanding of the whine I concluded that I did, in fact have it, though not bad at all. I would say, like many that have written here before, I would not have noticed it without reading about it. A “George Jettson Car sound” from start to stop, nothing else. I rode through the fall, into the winter (God Bless Texas) and finally spring. Now this is the warmest it has been since I owed the bike. As soon as the weather hit 70+ degrees it started. Between 39-42 mph (by my GPS, not Speedo) I now have a deafening Howl! This sounds nothing like the whine. It is of a frequency that seems to go right through my earplugs and into my skull. Ok, ok, it’s only between 39-42 mph, right? I can easily drive around that. Sure, no problem. Forward a few more weeks. Now it’s 80+ degrees and I still have the 39-42 mph issue and now have added 60-65 mph. Same sound, a howl that it comes from nowhere and drives me NUTS! This cannot stay. I am more than happy to take it in and have the clutch replaced. It just doesn’t seem to quite fit the classic “whine” scenario. Now for some background facts: The bike now has 7500 miles. The oil is Castrol Dino 20W-50 No Motorkote or any other additives. It not the tires because the howl stops as soon as pull in the clutch The bike had its 4k service last Nov. The howl didn’t start till spring What do you learned gentlemen and gentle ladies think the issue is? :confused24::confused24::confused24::confused24::confused24:
  24. Through out my days of running radar on the big road, I've observed a constant. I see alot guys from a Bandido, to sport bikes, and even one silver Venture (u know who u are-and u'r welcome) running at 83 mph on the money. Curiousity, is there something special about 83 mph?
  25. This afternoon, my wife and I were riding at approximately 50 mph in the Ocala, FL National Forest when I saw the windshield of my '01 RSV quickly leaving the bike. I was able to tuck my chin and the windshield struck my shoulders and helmet driving my head into my wife's face. Thankfully, she has a full face shield that doesn't flip up. I grabbed for her leg as if I was going to keep her from falling (lol) and we pulled over. After confirming we were OK, we turned around and found the destroyed windshield. The attachment points looked OK. We returned home and I got on this site and found that many bikes have had cracking on the attachment tabs. Thinking that was it, I took off the chrome piece and the tabs look brand new. I guess the 6 screws could have been loose. I bought this bike used last year and have put on about 3,000 miles and the fairing has not been apart that I know of. Any thoughts on how this could have happened and where to buy a replacement w/s, Thanks in advance.
