  1. Ok it looks like a solid motor mount upgrade may fix the wobble problem on the first gens. That the feed back I'm getting from the poll on the subject and other thread research. Is this a Yamaha kit upgrade or an after market product? What about cost for parts? Is this a winter upgrade project or a weekend job? Any Pros and Cons to the upgrade or is everybody happy with the solid motor mounts? I need part #'s.Is the kit the same for an 84 and 89?
  2. Lately I've been noticing sort of a glitch in the throttle when slowly cruising in low gears... 1st or 2nd..., without a load on the motor. The throttle is either on or off, and it makes it kinda tuff to maintain a steady speed. As long as I keep a load on the motor in say 3rd or 4th it responds fine, except the R's are way down. When in the lower gears if I let off on the throttle just a bit it's like I've rolled it completely off. It's getting herky jerky in street traffic.... The bike idles fine, and excellerates fine, and seems to have plenty of power, but the H&J is getting to be anoying. Out on the highway it seems to work fine at say 4200 in 5th. I also noticed a big drop in my fuel milage. Got 50+ during the ride to VWIII, but 38mpg to Fort Collins and up to now.. Any thoughts????
  3. Howdy All, I'm in the market and am thinking about a Venture. I've got other bikes that fit their purpose but I need a bike for two up multi-state rides. I've never ridden a venture and am interested in learning the pros and cons of this bike against it's competition. The few reviews I've found thus far state that the motor and brakes are underpowered for a bike this heavy. I don't really care about motor power (think two up with a wife that grabs my balls (a.k.a. the brakes) when I scrape the pegs with her on the back, but I do want good brakes. If the stock ones are bad, what options are available? When I go look at a used bike, what should I be looking for? What are the common problems this bike has? What's the best mods to make? I'm 6'2- how's the wind noise and weather protection on the highway? How about for the passenger? The other bikes I'm looking at are Goldwing, BMW RTS and BMW K1200 Thanks, -P
  4. ive had some people ask about my motor covers there is some covers on ebay now http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Yamaha-Venture-XVZ1200-Royale-CHROME-ENGINE-COVER-SET_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ10066QQihZ003QQitemZ130217524971QQrdZ1QQsspagenameZWDVW & http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Yamaha-Venture-side-cover-trim-1983-through-1985_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ35580QQihZ013QQitemZ230246762474QQrdZ1QQsspagenameZWDVW
  5. Would just like to get some feedback on what everyones opinions are on degreasers. Would like something to spray on motor and rinse off!
  6. I was on my way home Saturday and saw a smoaller trike on a trailer had an integrated rear trunkand fender, single seater, with what looked to be a chromed out Kohler motor. Can't remember the name, think it started with an R, bike tagged in OK. Anyone have any Ideas what it was??
  7. I have a 87 VR and would like to install solid motor mounts, where can you get them. Do any of you know of a link to go to.
  8. My brother is thinking about putting a 2004 RSV motor on his 98 Royal Star.I was wondering if anybody on this site had done this. Also if anybody knew of problems we would run into.
  9. Finally got the case split and the frame cleaned up. #'s match on motor and frame, so it is original. First a couple of pointers that I had not seen in earlier posts. For some reason, MamaYama decided not to put the drain plug in the lowest portion of the oil pan, so you don't get a complete oil change, nor drain the sludge. It makes it messy when you're tearing down the motor such as I am. I figured this one out, though. Take a gallon oil jug, split it in half vertically. Then follow these pics. I thought it was ingenious! Got about 1/4- 2/3rds quart of oil out of the motor. Just lay a couple of 2x4s on their edge with the split jugs under them and lay the motor over on it's side. By the way, how do you like my hillbilly work bench!?! Next: here are pics of my forks, only 1 showing any face wear, maybe just in the beginning phases of the damage part. I'm not seeing much damage on the gearset, haven't broken down the drive axle set yet (tomorrow?). Whada'ya think? I'm hoping thrust washer, check shaft and fork, replace if necessary. Can't figure out how to get pics between lines to continue commentary, will set new post for my frame questions. Thanks guys, Dan
  10. I took my 89 Venture out yesterday and took if for a short ride (hey it was 45 degrees out here!). Anyway when I got home there was some smoke coming out from under the bike. Upon further investigation, the motor in the back was covered with oil and the exhaust was smoking from oil dripping on it. I went back to the garage and the floor was spotless, then went out and shut the bike down, left it there for about 10 mins and got about three drops on the driveway. When it is running, though, I can see a drip about every 20 seconds onto the exhaust. It is definitely in the rear of the motor. Any ideas? Thanks Jim
  11. I going to replace the motor in my 84. It is starting to have problems in second gear. Second gear still works but it jumps under hard throttle. So sooner or later I'm going to put a new motor in her. I really don't have the time to tear down the motor to repair the tran's. I can replace a motor in about three days. I was wondering what range of years can I replace with?? Can a 1300 be exchanged to a 1200 frame?? I beleave after 85 they took care of the second gear problem , is this correct?? Thanks Kurt
  12. Permit me if I may to share some family photos with you - a little bit of history included. What do YOU have to share, if possible? Enjoy these. The first shot is of my Dad in 1946 on his old Harley. Next is me in 1971 on my brother's AJS (with a Matchless 650 twin motor). Then me again in 2004 prior to a weekend away on my 1972 K2 Honda 750/4 with my brothers. Finally - hey! What more can I say?
  13. My 87 Venture Royale had over 90,000 miles on it and recently developed a starter clutch problem which prevented starter from engageing with flywheel. I had already managed to get through last summer living with a low compression problem on one cylinder and knew I was facing a valve clearance proceedure and possibly other problems that would require major engine work. Considering that and the mileage I was pleased to be able to snag a very low mileage 1990 motor from one of my favorite ebay sellers who is also a VenturRider member (HessforLess), for what I thought was a great price. Since I resigned myself to an engine change out I decided to go ahead and completely restore the whole bike by taking the paint job up a few notches by unleashing my artistic nature by adding two color metalflake 3 dimensional shade variation ghost flames and Dragonslayer theme artwork Windsheild etching and Airbrush art on Gas tank cover. I also resolved myself to fixing all other known problems not already addressed in the process, mainly carberation. The new diaphrams for which cost me more than the whole engine. The details of the foregoing I'll post on seperate threads. But the subject of this thread is dressing out the motor. Having received the motor I decided to detail it's appearence before installing while it was still on the bench and easier to work with. The few things I did made a world of difference and the end result was so dramatic it blew me away enough to inspire me to post on this forum. CLEANING: The first thing I did was completly degrease and clean every speck of grim off every external suface on the motor. This I did by using a biodegradeable degreasing agent, an assortment of soft bristle brushes down to que-tip size which enabled me to get into every crack and crevice. Soaking, brushing, wiping, rinsing , air blowing dry over and over untill I was satisfied. This took some time but I was fortunate enough to have an idle helper available that did most of the grunt work under close supervision. The organic degreasers are slower than petroleum based solvents and other harsh chemicals that are available. But I planned on painting the engine block and my past experience has been that the chemical solvents frequently are not compatible with paint chemicals causing the paint to bubble and blister on application. Using biodegradeable degreaser and rinsing thoughly with warm water, (carefully applied protecting Intake manifolds and any other openings which would allow water inside motor), the paint problem is eliminated. PAINTING I had used in the past and decided to use on this project a product made by Dupli-Color made especially for engine blocks. The paint is in aerosol cans and is called High Heat and is rated up to 1200 degrees F. It comes in several colors as well as a clear final coat for extra protection. I choose what they call chrome. It is shinny silver when color is applied but when the color coat is covered with the clear coat it turns from shinny chrome color to aluminum color which is about the same as the original Yamaha block color. The paint has a ceramic base and when the paint is cured it has a hard shinny finish that does seem like ceramic coating. The paint covers well and applies easily for a smooth even finish. The key is to be easy on the trigger of the can because a small squirt covers alot and if your trigger finger is too heavy you'll end up over loading the paint and making a mess of it. It dries quickly and spot touch up blends in well leaving no trace. POLISHING I've always hated the varnish coating Yamaha puts on the side covers and valve covers for protection. I've not seen a 1st gen yet where the varnish was not weathered and in a lot of cases completely broken down allowing corrosion and oxidation of metal alloy surfaces. No wonder Yamaha covered up the motor with all those fiberglass body pieces and side covers. I have attempted on several occasions to wax, buff, polish or chemically remove the varnish film with marginal if any success for all the time and elbow grease expended. This time I decided to remove the covers and take them down the street to the local chromer, ( Pro Chrome and Polishing, Scottdale, Ga.) who happens to be owned and operated by Gary a friend of mine. SIDE NOTE: Gary seemed unusally joyful during this transaction which was somewhat uncharacteristic of his normal gruff old biker dude demeanor. Evidently his new joyfull:bighug:attitude is a result of closing a deal with the Discovery Channel where they are developing a new biker motorhead series "Drag Bike Racing for Pinks" which I understand will be on the air in near future. Evidently the discovery channel needed a new bike show to fill the void when Paul Jr. & Sr. Jumbed over to the learning Channel. I volunteered my services as a roadie when I picked up the covers, but I don't think he heard me up there on Cloud Nine. Polishing Continued: I hate to credit his gleeful state for the results on the covers because I know he does good work anyway. But, I must say that when I opened the box to inspect the covers The descriptive word and phrase that I must have repeated over and over was WOW, What a difference that made I could not have been more pleased with the results. Gary had acid dipped the covers to clean and disolve varnish film, Buffed them using the right stuff and whatever other trick of the trade he used on them it made a huge difference on the look of the motor. I dont know if you can tell in the photo since the reflection of the flash distorts the effect. But, take my word for it looks great. The cost was $175.00 for the polishing work and about $30.00 for the side cover gaskets. This does not include new valve cover gaskets which I have not bought yet. I just could not swallow the $30.00 a piece Yamaha wants for Gaskets. So now I'm looking for a more reasonable after market dealer. If anyone knows of a better source Please share. Screw Yamaha. I'm betting that when she gets put all back together with the LED Lighting, colored spark plg wires, wireing and cable sleaves and other details I've added I'll be throwing those side covers awayto show off the motor. Well.... Maybe not since I've just put so much time, effort and expense painting them. But, I am considering modifying them to flip on and off when parked at Bike night or other bike event to show off the motor. I thought maybe I could hinge them and rig a mechanism to flip them up like the doors on the old Gull Wing Porsch. Or better yet a little motor to slide them back out of the way between the saddle bags and the rear tire, like a motorized pocket door. I don't know maybe I'll put some more thought into it.
  14. Hi, Time to replace the Dunlop Elite II tires on my 1st Gen 83 VR. before my long summer tour out west....I've looked at some of the previous posts and am wondering between the seeminly ever popular Venoms loved by lots on here, the Elite III's , The Conti-tour and The Michelin Commander.. SW motor Tires and American Motorcycle Tires seem to have the best prices.. Any words of wisdom or warning concerning the above? Thanks, Clay
  15. No I am not going to run off...I can assure all of you I plan to stay and pester all of you so......I have ordered a new GoldWing 2008 with everything but the airbag. I did this for a lot of reasons......I started riding motorcycles at age 14 when I raced for Yamaha......then moved on to street bikes and the Harley motorcycles.....I rode them for 18 years......then got disgusted with all the problems and started switching to this bike and that one...honda's, suzuki. and several Yamaha bikes including this latest Venture......to me Venture is a good name for it as it was a Venture!! I have had a lot of trouble with this particular bike, I know this is not the norm......but just the same it left a sour taste in my mouth......I fought the dealers to the ground and finally got my clutch basket and rear drive situation settled........now I have a new letter from Yamaha telling me they need to pull the motor and install new gaskets and re-torque the head bolts........this head gasket stuff I thought I left behind with Harley, at least with a new bike.....no I have not hidden this fact I took the letter to Carolina Honda and gave it to them as I am trading Crickett in on the new one. (I am honest to a fault) I like the looks of the Venture....the motor response......and the comfort........but it is a basic bike.......by the time you install this and that and this and that......before you know it......if you keep track.........you can easily put a few grand into making it street safe. I went to Carolina Honda and they gave me a loaner bike that had ABS brakes.......I suppose that above many things helped me finally make my final choice in motorcycles......I even took the bike over to the church parking lot.......took an old cup with me and threw sand on the parking surface and kicked it around and made a mess......then ran the bike through it and hit the brakes........yep I can make it slip and grab and act a little like a squirrel.....but this is an extreme test and under the worst condition I could think of.............on smooth hard pavement.....you are not going to slip a wheel......just hit those brakes front and rear and be careful......it will stop you in a hurry!! So that was one selling point to me, I am getting older........more forgetful.......might be daydreaming one day and look up and oh sh.....T that bumper is awful close!! The lighting on this bike is simply how can I say........the best in the world.......the rear has lights all over it......mine will have an additional spoiler with an LED light on that.......that is a total of about 8 lights on the back....counting the one we are putting on the license tag too...........the front has great big signal lights........huge bright headlights.......big functional mirrors...........a windshield you can adjust for different condtions, and lots of other stuff. But safety was my biggest decision on this particular bike or about 90 percent of it.........the perfect handling and low center of balance is just a bonus, but a very welcome addition. Oh and to all you 1st Gen fellows......I know you all can outrun a 2nd Gen...but can assure you ......you cannot outrun an 1800 Honda mean machine motor......the first couple hours I played with it......I really had no desire to see what happened over 4000 rpm........last day taking it back I pushed it up there a bit......this thing will run .......way more power than I will ever use.......but is nice to have. Kit
  16. my rite rear cylinder leaks water out the exhaust and there is oily water around the spark plug and i have water in my oil but the weard part as soon as i warm up the motor it runs fine , i am thinking hoping it mite be the cylinder water jacket joint ? anybody ever take one of these out ? now the hard part , do i have to pull the motor to remove the rear head , to install a new head gasket ? moan !! mite be better to buy another motor , shipping is going to be he!! glad i went back to work , and before any of you 2nd gens say anything NO I AM NOT GOIN TO BUY A 2ND GEN so there :rasberry:
  17. OK, I've never replaced a pan gasket before, so I thought I'd ask the experts. After getting the exhaust and collector out of the way can I drop the pan, or am I just starting. Man.... I hope I don't have to pull the motor.....
  18. Folks the thing we are seeing with the toy industry is just the tip of the iceberg. In the 35 years I have worked, after four years in the military, most all of it has been in the Quality Assurance/Quality Control area of manufacturing. I spent over fifteen years for a company that made electric motors for the appliance industry with the last eight being the Corporate Quality Manager over four plants in three different states. Their product was the small motor usually used as the condensing fan motor in refrigerators, water coolers, coke machines, etc. When I left, they were producing 65,000 motors a week. Without naming names I will say that the largest customer's name started with a "W" and ended with an "L" and they made refrigerators and a lot of other appliances. At the time I left, the price of the OEM motor to them was about $7 each. If it was an aluminum frame motor, it was generally a fifteen year motor and if it was a cast iron frame motor, it was generally a twenty year motor. That means that under normal circumstances you did not have to replace that motor for about fifteen years at a cost of $75 to $100 bucks, if the refrigerator was still worth it. This included the service call. The motor sold to the general public for about $30 from a place like Granger. Several years ago, this famous customer decided they wanted to get motors from China and save a few buck on each refrigerator. Now the motor they are using is about a five year motor. Therefore, for them to save a couple of bucks, it would cost the average homeowner up to $200 to keep that refrigerator running over ten years. But then again, they are hoping that by five years you will want another new $1,500 or more refrigerator anyway. To put this into human perspective, the company I worked for had a plant that employed about 200 people (largest county employer) in one of the poorest counties in east Tennessee. This company had some of the most loyal employees that put out some of the best quality. The return rate on their motors was less than one tenth of one percent. That is less than one in a thousand, and historically half of those returns were customer induced problems. Now that plant is closed. After that company, I worked for a company that made aluminum and zinc castings. They also had three plants and then spent millions building a plant in Mexico. One of the castings they made was the case for the Tremeck six speed transmission that went onto the Corvette. They paid seventy cents per hour for labor to make parts for a transmission to go into a $60,000 car. That company ended up closing three plants including the one in Mexico. I have now been with a company that makes tank type water heaters for over four years. Now, almost everything that we use other than the tank and jacket comes from Mexico or China. The only reason they are still in the US is the physical size of a water heater. It absolutely breaks my heart to see what this country is doing with their manufacturing. One of these days it will be just one big service industry. RandyA
  19. November 6, 2007 Green Earth Technologies has announced a completely biodegradable motor oil which the company claims is the “first bio-based, high-endurance motor oil to provide superior performance during the maximum oil change interval recommended by vehicle manufacturers”. G-OIL is made from tallow acquired from American beef farmers - so as well as its environmental credentials the product has no dependence on foreign oil – and will enter US Market in a range of performance levels and viscosities to suit gasoline, diesel, or hybrid engines. http://www.gizmag.com/ See automotive
  20. Installed a 86-93 engine in a 83-85 frame? My 84 has a bad oil leak from 13 years of storage. The motor only has 23K on it and runs strong, shifts smooth, no 2nd gear problems yet. I have a 89 motor with only 15K. I would like to know how it runs. Can I swap the two with no problems using the 84 carbs, etc kind of a plug and play swap? This would let me clean up the 84 engine, repair the dry seals, and decide if I should attempt a early second gear fix before problems arise. I could reinstall the 84 engine later. Who knows the 89 might run good in the 84.
  21. I just installed a Radiantz LED tail light and with the bike running the light is not steady, it flickers just enough to make it annoying. I tried revving the motor some and it still flickers. Any one have any thoughts about that? Thanks, Buford
  22. Yesterday, Barbara and I test rode a full boat '08 GW 1800. It sure is a lot different than the 1200 Venture. It is the smoothest (both ride AND motor) motorcycle I've ever ridden, and also the quietest. A lot less wind noise than the Venture, and way less sound from the motor and exhaust (My Venture has stock mufflers). The GW has a little less leg room, but you are much closer to the ground than the Venture. Barbara had a bit more leg room, plus the passenger portion of the seat was bigger. Had some things I didn't like though. First off, the motor doesn't have much personality. It didn't have the snarl the Venture does when you shift it at about 4 grand. You sit much further forward, and this puts you much closer to the windshield and gives you a lot less arm room. After about 40 miles, I could feel cramps in my arms. The dealer said that somebody makes an adapter that allows you to move the handle bars further forward, but they are not adjustable like the Ventures are in stock form (although my Venture's are still in the 'stock' position). The GW doesn't counter-steer as easy as the Venture, it resisits changing course. It's a pretty bike, but I'm not sure I'd like it.
  23. After having a some experiance on 2008 Roadking I gotta say I'm impressed. Thier new motor the 96 cube is smooth and the bike accelerates well. Looks like they are getting thier act together. Coming out with Hydraulic clutches, 2nd Gen ABS, 6 gal fuel tank, and 6 speed tranny. Thier stereos sound good, I gotta hand it to them they are coming around. Still need liquid cooling. Now if they put that Vrod motor in thier bikes.
  24. Vmax Forward Controls V-max VMX12 i bet if i take off my motor guards these will work but just a little costly
  25. I am new to this site, and have read and re-read the complaints about the whine the venture makes. Some say it is the cut gears........some say it is the clutch basket, some say it is the rear drive. I myself have rode my new venture for 4 months, putting 5200 miles on it already, and early this morning I took it for a 200 mile jaunt and paid particular attention to the whine. I know now why I never even considered it. All big bike motors have this so called whine.......all of them........that is why I was wondering exactly what everyone was talking about. My recent Suzuki 1400 Intruder made more noise than my new Venture. That was until I put drag pipes on it , then I could not hear the motor at all....!! Thinking back my Honda shadow did this same thing.......not so distinct......but it was there. The venture runs so quiet you can hear the motor work. I think this is the whine , exactly what is , I really do not know, I actually think it is the pistons going up and down in the cylinder sleeves as the noise varies at slow to high speed........some say changing the clutch basket moves the noise? Hum?? I am not sure what it is........I do know if the pipes did not run so quiet, most likely no one would even worry or complain about this. I am most likely going to get beat up for this post.......that is okay.......I have a sense of humor(Hey!) But I really do not think the whine thing is an issue. I have confidence in my machine, I really do, and do not even worry about the whine, I think it is just part of the bike, and if it had louder pipes.......no one would even notice it. I personally like to hear the motor work.....is part of the fun of riding. To poke along on secondary roads and enjoy the sound of the bike....enjoy life, enjoy just being alive...no I like my bike just fine.......whine and all!! Kit
