  1. To Redrocket: be very careful with the 12MM bolt on the top of the reservoir. Mine was a little tight and I gave it a good pull and cracked the reservoir. Took me a couple of weeks to find another one. Yamaha said it wasn't available any longer so I had to wait for one to come up on eBay.
  2. Thanks for all the tips guys. Got a Hot Dawg heater installed in the garage a week or so ago and now have a toasty place to work. The priority for this weekend is to take the suggestions and act on them. I will let you know how I make out. Otherwise - what a great ride. My wife likes it better than my old 1200 Wing.
  3. Want to make it clear - carefully checked the fluid level and it is not overfilled!
  4. I have a Gen 1, 1989 Venture that has some ongoing problems with the rear brake. When I bought the bike, I noticed the rear brake pedal was very soft and about bottoming out. I removed the rear saddlebag to discover that the seals were blown out of the caliper. Bought the seals, rebuilt the caliper and thought everything was fine. Used the recommended fluid. Was very careful not to overfill the reservoir. I was out riding at the end of the season when the bike started lugging. I came to a stop light and to my amazement the bike wouldn't move. I managed to get it to the side of the road and called my wife to bring the trailer. No fluid on the ground, no issues other than I could detect heat coming from the rear brake area. Brake pedal hard as a rock. I tried to move the bike until my wife got there, no luck and while I was deciding what to do, - for some reason - pulled up on the foot brake pedal and voila - the brake instantly released! Brought the bike home and re bled the rear and front linked brake. I has happened twice more with the same result. Give it a few minutes and pull up on the brake pedal and the bike frees up. What is concerning is the wear and tear on the brake, clutch and drive train from the brake slowly tightening as I drive. Would you figure the master cylinder is suspect? Thanks Jim
  5. Being new to the Ventures, I had two problems as discussed above. The valve cover bolts were loose and I overfilled the bike. I put 4 qts with the new filter. Apparently a no no. I siphoned some oil out and tightened the cover bolts. So far - after cleaning the motor and exhaust off, everything seems to be ok. One other thing, the air compressor display is not working nor is the compressor. Is there somewhere to look first, like a connector or relay? Thanks
  6. I don't think so - did an oil change with filter put 4 qts in. It seems to be a pressure leak - or vent I guess. I just hate to start taking things apart if it is something simple (I hope, I hope!) Jim
  7. I took my 89 Venture out yesterday and took if for a short ride (hey it was 45 degrees out here!). Anyway when I got home there was some smoke coming out from under the bike. Upon further investigation, the motor in the back was covered with oil and the exhaust was smoking from oil dripping on it. I went back to the garage and the floor was spotless, then went out and shut the bike down, left it there for about 10 mins and got about three drops on the driveway. When it is running, though, I can see a drip about every 20 seconds onto the exhaust. It is definitely in the rear of the motor. Any ideas? Thanks Jim
  8. Thermagasket requires pure water (tap is ok) and the thermagasket per instructions. Then you need to drive it 400 miles with the stuff in it - so you need to make sure you don't have freezing temperatures. Since I was real close to winter, I used the old "100 watt bulb in the trouble light" routine under the hood at night. Made sure I ran the car just before bedtime to keep some latent heat in the block. Like I said, it worked pretty well - and I was using a ton of antifreeze through the exhaust and it pretty much cleared it up - about a cup every three weeks or so. Once that is done, they will tell you to never use radiator flush again - or you will wipe it out. Good luck - incidentally the Thermagasket people are great to speak with and will be very helpful (no I don't work for them). Jim
  9. I had a 1991 Caddy Deville that sprung a leak and I used thermagasket. It worked for the most part. If you get it - make sure you follow the instructions carefully. It is very sensitive to anti-freeze and will not stick to any surface with it on it. They tell you to take TSP or something like it and run it in the block. There are some other suggestions like running several tablespoons of Dawn Liquid detergent. The key here is to get the internal block as free of oil and anti-freeze as possible. There have been some really good testimonials and since yours in on the outside, it will probably work just fine. Jim
  10. Man- What a nice bike! I only rode it a very short distance (wicked cold here~) but I already like the feel and ride! I agree with all the suggestions and am working on them now. Thanks Jim
  11. Hello! I recently purchased a "mint" (and I mean mint") 1989 Venture with 28K on it. It has not been used much the last 5 years - only 1000 miles. There appears to be nothing wrong and everything works at this point. I am planning a trip from Massachusetts to Jacksonville in May - then going to Miami, Key West then through GA, NC, WV, V, PA and then back home. Probably 3500 miles or more. What do you think about running this bike that far? I am an old Winger - but don't know much about the Ventures. Thanks for your input! Jim
