1. Another Saturday working on the bike, we got the engine back in, since there was only 2 of us it took some extra time to get it in, we had a few memory lapses, loosing tools, nuts, bolts, you name it we misplace it at one time or another. Got the clutch working after a little difficulty, but finally got it bled out and working. A couple of nuts and hex screws got misplaced and it took some time searching, so we finally gave up and I saw K-Rider off, I went back out to the shop and low and behold I picked up a coffee cup and there they were with a bunch of other bolts I will probably be looking for later. So I continued working getting the motor all bolted back in and all the frame rails attached. Still had some daylight left so I figured I would start installing the newly painted side cases. Got all but one installed and trying to download the pics.
2. Got this geared motor at work today from one of the other engineer's. There may be a couple of more available. I don't know what it was intended for. 12V motor, not a servo motor. Only 2 wire input. What can this motor be made to do on a Venture. Really, you know me, I may just try the best ideas. Gary
3. Currently doing the second gear major and planning on solid motor mounts for the re-install. Is there a downside to the delrin mounts vs solid metal? They claim to be heat tolerant and provide all the advantages of solid mounts without the vibration. Sounds good but I'd like to hear from some who are using them. Thanks for all the good advice so far...
4. Well with a little help from a co-worker and new VR member, K-Rider, we finally got the motor out of the frame on my 83, and the write up in the tech section was a big help. After we got it out sprayed the lower frame and the motor with de-greaser used the pressure washer to get all that 29 year old grease of the frame and motor, I couldnt believe how much grease had built up on the parts of the engine I couldnt see..........it will make disassemble of the motor a not so dirty job.
5. Ok, the question is, will the heads from an '83 1200cc motor fit on top of an '88 1300cc motor? IIRC, Dingy put 1200cc V-Max heads on a 1300 motor. This is the issue I am having. I have a incomplete donor motor from an '88 Venture that I picked up for my '83 Venture that was having 2nd gear issues. When I cracked open my '83 case, I found out that the two center crankshaft bearings were damaged, with the journal of one having scrapes deep enough to catch a fingernail. The other exposed bearings looked dull. Also, the PO had opened the motor before, sealing it back up with red gasket sealer, getting it everywhere, even in oil passages. So I am a little concerned about the block. The '88 motor had almost all of it's covers removed, and the intake/exhaust ports left open. Some of the valves are stuck open. I pulled the heads and the cylinders look fine, still has the cross-hatch marks on the walls with no up/down scratches. The exposed bearings look nice & shiny, and I see no damage on the crankshaft. My '83 heads are still fine as the bike was still running before I tore it down. So what I want to do is put the good gears back into the '88, button it back up, and swap the heads from my '83 onto the '88, then install the '88 back into my bike. I'm looking at head gaskets for an '88 and the valve cove gaskets from a 2nd gen. I know I'm asking a question that I kinda have an answer for (and most likely the direction I will take), but I'm just seeing if there is any issues or problems that I should be aware of or look out for. I was hoping for a simple transmission swap but it's turning into a big headache. -Andrew
6. I have a 1942 belt drive, Atlas Lathe that I completely rebuilt, and is my pride and joy. The 70 year old, 1/2 HP AC motor that came with the lathe, has finally "gone to heaven", just this past weekend. I would like to put a DC motor, and variable speed controller on this lathe, and bring it into the 21st century. I DO NOT have a very good understanding of DC motors, or the controllers. Could someone PLEASE help me with the selection of a motor and controller? Or, if you have a motor and controller, and would like to trade for some upgraded parts, or S.S. Brake Lines, or good old American cash. I really could use some help with this project. I know I can purchase a new AC motor, but the thought of changing the speed on this lathe, by twisting a knob, is very high on my "Must Have" list right now. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Earl
7. Im considering going with a motor club, one that will also cover the bike. Right now im leaning on going with the GWRRA because their roadside assistance also covers cars as well. What im looking for is opinions from members here who use any of the different motor clubs that are out there, your experiences with them, pros and cons, etc. Im realizing that as I get older im having a much harder time doing some of the basic stuff like changing a flat tire, especially since I ant kneel anymore. So, tell me your thoughts on the clubs.....
8. Looking for a MKII starter motor as i believe they have 4 brushes instead of the stock two in 83. thank you very much -CJ

12. I have recently been given an "88 Venture Royal , with 104k miles , and its been pulling a very heavy trailer on long trips . The guy said he was concerned about the milage , and its starting to make a little noise it 4th & 5th gears . In fact it makes a very loud gear whine in all gears , that changes with speed both pitch and volume . At 45mph and up , and holding a steady speed it is the worst . It goes away if you coast , gets quieter if you accelerate or decelerate . My first thought is pinion gear , which this thing has 2 of . And I can't tell if its motor end or final drive end . And it is leaking motor oil at the front drive shaft , and is definitely worse with a passenger . With the bike on it's center stand , and in gear , I can rotate the rear wheel 3 to 4 inches of play . What would be normal here ? I'm hoping for only the crush sleeves on the pinion shaft to be beat up / bad . Has anyone had any experience with this ?
13. Well my leak was not the shift shaft seal as I still have it, noticed the clutch cylinder is above it and the netural switch. Anyone ever have a leak on the clutch actuator? My manual doesn't list a seal there. It is motor oil and not hyd fluid. Guess I'll be tearing it back apart!
14. Hi, I modified my starter to add the recommended ground wire from the brushplate to the motor case. Much improvement is obvious after one day of riding. I am really looking forward to not having to plan my stops against how hard it will be to restart when the motor is hot (even though I got pretty adept at using drive throughs, rather than turning the bike off). Thanks all for the insights and benefit of the collective experience! Brian
15. Just found this drop of antifreeze while i was trying to route aux cable for Ipod suppose to leave on the 14th and I know there is no way the dealer can get to it. 17. between MK I and MKII? I got all these parts for the 83 and now I just bought 88 wondering if any of these will fit (I'm thinking yes to all) collectors? solid motor mounts? condor superbrace? carb diaphrams? antidive block off plates?
18. I have a Drag Specialties liquid filled gauge installed by the PO with tap in usual place near the clutch. Pressure is within spec per the yammy manual so I believe it to be normal but as some of you know it's essentially 0psi with a hot motor at under 2k rpm. I have to assume it's reading the other side of the relief valve or something. Any of the experts here know why the readings are so darned low on a warmed up motor?
19. tracing donw my excess heat problem i noticed the chrome covering on the exhaust header on the right rear pipe lacks 2 1/8 inches coming to the motor so you see and feel that much pipe is there some way to move the chrome sheild closer to the motor of am i missing a short piece
20. Good day. I am about to tear into my bike to do a few, (hopefully last in a while), fixes and tunes. While I was in there, (taking the thing apart is getting old), I want to change to solid motor mounts. Where is a good place to get them for a reasonable price? Thanks.
21. Come on by and watch me.... After spending most of the winter taking on the 2nd gear issue and having lots of ups and downs we finally got the bike back together. Hooked it all up with exhaust etc.. Lots of help from folks on the site.. Like Dingy, Dano and Skydoc. Mostly Marcarl.. Anyhow it started right up BUT it makes an enormous racket while in neutral. Goes through the gears fine and quiet in every gear but in neutral it sounds like a metal playing card on bicycle spokes... Looking like I have to pull the motor again which is a BIG job for my limited skills and then chase down the problem and re-assemble. Down time with not riding is going to kill me... Anyhow does anyone have any suggestions as to what I did wrong? Wayne
22. This is how my neighbour at the campground is hauling his HD Road King. First he removes the tour pack and windshield. Then he tilts the handle bars down a little. He has a winch to bring the bike in and out. I looked at one of these Prevost motor homes at a big RV show when we were in Tampa Fl and it listed for just over $2 MILLION.
23. I took the trunk off. Now I need to know what bracket I need to mount for a sissy bar and small luggage rack..........The motor handles better without the wind catcher behind me.
24. (MUNICH, GERMANY) Norbert Reithofer, CEO of Bayerische Motoren Werke AG, announced today that Harley-Davidson Motor Company has accepted a friendly merger agreement by BMW and will combine their motorcycle manufacturing facilities. Mr. Keith E Wandell, CEO of Harley-Davidson, will become president of the the worldwide motorcycle division, which will include the current BMW Motorrad division, Harley-Davidson, and Husqvarna. "We have long felt the need to diversify our motorcycle production by adding models more attuned to the cruiser market," Herr Reithofer said. "With our current BMW line, our Husqvarna line, and now the new Harley-Davidson line, we will be able to penetrate all parts of the worldwide motorcycle market." Mr. Wandell stated that the move, which has taken the motorcycling world by surprise, was accepted by Harley-Davidson as a way to strengthen its capital base, which has never recovered from the 2008 financial meltdown. "We also are looking for ways to streamline our operations by combining research and development, design, and marketing components of our motorcycle lines." The two men showed off a prototype of the kind of combined work the new combined companies will be capable of by announcing the BMW H1600R, which features a Harley motor in the body of the current K1600GT, suitably modified, with a distinctive orange and blue paint scheme to combine the colors of the two companies. There was also a clay mockup of a version of the current RoadKing Classic with the iconic BMW boxer motor, which is promised for fall introduction. FOR RELEASE AFTER MARCH 31, 2011
25. Well after my family sold my dad's 69 Shelby Ragtop, I had to have a new collectible. The guy who bought the car had this little sweetie to sell. I won't tell what I paid, but I got a great deal. It is a 1999 Saleen Cobra Speedster. One of only 352 built with the cobra motor. 421 Hp Dynoed. We will keep it in Utah for awhile, but I plan on bringing it back down to warmer temps
