  1. The weather just got right to start back with my woodturning, got about 1/2 way thru a Marblewood bowl, shut the lathe off to check the work and now it will not start again. Fuse is good, power is good to the outlet. Switch is good, suspect the relay that I hear click in each time I power it up is bad, it is mounted to a circuit board so it is not like I can just swap it out, the lathe is a 4 year old Nova DRV with an electronic brain for controlling the speed and sensing overlaods and out of balance situations, so there is not much I can do with it until I get a Return Goods Authorization from Teknatool. I geuss they are still on holiday break because my online trouble ticket has gone untouched for about 3 days and phone calls to the engineering tech go straight to voice mail. I would go for a ride rathter than vent here, but it is raining, Drat the bad luck all around, at least I am not at work. Guess I wil just have to wait for the tech service department to come back from holiday. Just venting that is all.
  2. I have a 1942 belt drive, Atlas Lathe that I completely rebuilt, and is my pride and joy. The 70 year old, 1/2 HP AC motor that came with the lathe, has finally "gone to heaven", just this past weekend. I would like to put a DC motor, and variable speed controller on this lathe, and bring it into the 21st century. I DO NOT have a very good understanding of DC motors, or the controllers. Could someone PLEASE help me with the selection of a motor and controller? Or, if you have a motor and controller, and would like to trade for some upgraded parts, or S.S. Brake Lines, or good old American cash. I really could use some help with this project. I know I can purchase a new AC motor, but the thought of changing the speed on this lathe, by twisting a knob, is very high on my "Must Have" list right now. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Earl
  3. I have access to a brake lathe. Is there a resurfacing spec to redo the calipers?
  4. i got a jolt of electricity that woke me up and put me in a stupor at the same time. late this afternoon after i called it quits, i was getting ready to turn some wood on the lathe. i reached from the left instead of the right to grab a tool handle i had a bit for. un-be-knownst to me, a light cord that draped near it had a mouse bite of plastic missing. the left arm rested on the lathe as the handle was in the right hand, with the ferrule rising up to meet that one little spot of missing plastic wire coating. the juice traveled from arm to arm crossing my chest to the lathe's ground. I almost made fudge after the 2 seconds of working for the electric company. i was lucky i was not holding on to anything, i was pushed back away from the bench. i don't know if my heart was affected, but seems as not. i cut the offending section of wire out after inspecting & finding about 5 inches of suspect wire and repaired the cable. man, what we take for granted. i waited until i got my wits back before i put tool to wood.
