1. This blonde that I work with, came back to work today. She was carrying this big stainless steel Thermos, and wearing a big smile. So, I asked her, "did you get that for Christmas?" "Yes. My daddy bought it for me. Do you know what it is?" She replied. Playing along, I said, "Why don't you tell me about it." She says, "It is called a Thermos. It is a truly amazing device, scientifically speaking!" "Really. What does it do?" I said, figuring this had to be good. "My daddy says it keeps hot things hot and cold things cold" she bragged. "What have you got in it?" I inquired. "Popsicles and coffee" she answered, with her most innocent smile.
2. The stock horn works good. Installed a set of Stebel Electric horns on the existing wires and they work good. I installed a relay 30 to Horn 87 to Battery 85 to Ground 86 to Horn Button. When I turn the key on the horn goes off without me pressing the horn button. This is how I determined which of the origional black horn button I would hook to the horn button. I turned the key on and used a troubleshooting light and found the wire that lights up. I took that wire and hooked it to 86. After thinking about the 86 wire I asked why the horn wire is hot without pressing the horn button. I doubled check both sets of horn wire and sure enough when the key is on one wire from each set is hot. This would then activate the relay when the key is on Shouldn't that wire only be hot when the horn button is pressed? What do I look at?
3. Man I got our 30 year wedding anniversary coming up in a few days. This economy sucks been a lousy year. Does anybody know how to put the Romantic touches on a Hot Dog dinner for two?
4. Thought I would share an idea i had don't think I've ever seen one. The wife an I got tired of coming back to our bike after shopping to a hot seat we haven't had a chance to try it yet but it should work. If this works I'm posting the pics now
5. Well, I think my starter is getting tired. I get a slow hot crank mostly and I sometimes get a slow cold crank, but def. slower when hot. I read somewhere that the ventures have a two brush starter and the vmax has a 4 brush starter. I guess I could take mine apart and clean it but it would probably just be easier go get another used one, tune it up and throw it in and keep spares.
6. Just returned home from our weekend camping trip with the new-to-us tent trailer. Had to stick a plug in a nailhole in the rear tire just before we left. Fairly new Dunlop Elite 3 (appx 4500 miles on it). Checked the tire regularly during the trip and found it to be very hot after an hour or so riding. So hot in fact that I could not hold my hand on it very long and the wheel was even hotter. Running 39 lbs cold in the tire. The front tire was warm but not too warm and the trailer tires were about the same. I guess I had about 40lbs weight on the tongue and a light load on the bike. We did the whole trip (appx 800 kilometers) without issue but the tire was still quite hot each time I checked it. BTW, I have no idea how hot the tire might have been before this trip riding without the trailer. Any thoughts on this guys??
7. RSTD Looking to buy one, that is a Yamaha Royal Star Tour Deluxe. I drove two over the weekend. The first was an 06 at a dealer with 30k. it had corrosion on it I think it has been ridden up north in the salt. When I drove it I found things like cruise and self canceling turn signals that didn't work. Although it ran OK when I returned with it the dealer asked what I thought about it and I replied "Road hard and put away wet". The second one was a black 06 bought new in 07 with 9k miles on it, WOW what a gorgeous bike I was ready to just put it in the trailer. But, we test rode it as you should and was disappointed with the obnoxious WINE and the slow speed steering was scary, it felt like the front tire was flat. The bike was difficult to turn then would turn like it was going to flop, so you had to push it hard then hold on as to not over steer. Now very frustrated we had to walk away from this bike as well. On our drive of 2-1/2 hours back home I realized I had hot feet ridding both bikes. I currently ride a VTX 1800 C with forward controls and my feet never get hot. Is the hot feet normal on this bike with the floorboards and the chin fairings? I ride in southern FL and most of the time it is 85 degrees plus so I'm wondering if anyone has installed vents in the faring or even cut holes in them to duct air back around the floorboards? Also any suggestions of what was wrong with the steering on that bike? We bought an 07 RSTD w/15 months of remaining warranty. I have added the wind wing air deflectors and hwy pegs which these photos do not show, the rest of the mods were on the bike at time of purchase. I also have bought a Shark stereo and have to get it installed this next week. BTW the deflectors fixed the hot feet issue along with the highway pegs.
8. We just got our Royal Star Venture (what do I call it, a Venture? An RSV?) and we're both noticing WOW it's HOT on the feet. He has highway pegs so he's fine but I'm wondering if anyone has any solution for the passenger??? I really cannot STAND hot feet and would love passenger highway pegs - are there such a thing? I know you can get passenger foot rests to give you different positions from Diamond but is there anything I can get that puts them out into the wind? Thanks!!!
9. 1st ...I have had my 87 Royale for 20+ years. And done many Mods and work. I have 30 years as an electronic tech. But I have been having this HOT idle skip. EX: been riding on a hot day. Get off the hiway to my house. Pull up the driveway. Open the garage and the idle starts missing. I can see the tach dipping..I hear the spark plug caps arcing and can see it on the right side caps(3,4) sparks to the head. AH, I replace the caps and wires to ALL coils. Stiill no help when hot. AND if I rev the bike the issue goes away for a 30 seconds then returns. I ohm out the pick up coils. All good. Primary side of the ignition coils.. test good even when HOT...OUCH. I replaced intake o-rings AND We can rule out the carbs because I had the bike EGA'd ...it's not rich... running 13.5:1 a/f @ 1000rpm. CHanged to non-resistor spark plugs vs. resistor type...no difference. Since the bike can idle smooth on first start of the day w/o choke...Thus , I think a hotter range plug will not fix this. As a cold engine is more difficult to ignite fuel. Also, I do not see a "rev limiter" wire in the schematics. Typically from the tach to ignitor. As this has been a documented problem on my Yamaha Vision. Again, if I increase revs it's good for as hort few seconds. I am thinking it the ignitor getting heat soaked OR secondary side of the 2 right coils are bad...BUT then again, reving it shiould not temp. make it run good. Any experience out there with an issue like this???
10. There was supossed to be a pic here but it wont post for some reason. Sorry, Shaun
11. Dear Diary, Just moved to Texas! Now this is a state that knows how to live!! Beautiful sunny days and warm balmy evenings. It is beautiful. I've finally found my home. I love it here. June 14th: Really heating up. Got to 100 today. Not a problem. Live in an air-conditioned home, drive an air-conditioned car. What a pleasure to see the sun everyday like this. I'm turning into a sun worshipper. June 30th: Had the backyard landscaped with western plants today. Lots of cactus and rocks. What a breeze to maintain. No more mowing the lawn for me. Another scorcher today, but I love it here. July 10th: The temperature hasn't been below 100 all week. How do people get used to this kind of heat? At least, it's kind of windy though. But getting used to the heat is taking longer than I expected. July 15th: Fell asleep by the community pool. Got 3rd degree burns over 60% of my body. Missed 3 days of work. What a dumb thing to do. I learned my lesson though. Got to respect the ol' sun in a climate like this. July 20th: I missed Lomita (my cat) sneaking into the car when I left this morning. By the time I got to the hot car at noon, Lomita had died and swollen up to the size of a shopping bag, then popped like a water balloon. The car now smells like Kibbles and $hits. I learned my lesson though. No more pets in this heat. Good ol' Mr. Sun strikes again. July 25th: The wind sucks. It feels like a giant freaking blow dryer!! And it's hot as hell. The home air-conditioner is on the fritz and the AC repairman charged $200 just to drive by and tell me he needed to order parts. July 30th: Been sleeping outside on the patio for 3 nights now, $225,000 house and I can't even go inside. Lomita is the lucky one. Why did I ever come here? Aug. 4th: Its 115 degrees. Finally got the air-conditioner fixed today. It cost $500 and gets the temperature down to 85. I hate this stupid state. Aug. 8th: If another wise ass cracks, 'Hot enough for you today?' I'm going to strangle him. Damn heat. By the time I get to work, the radiator is boiling over, my clothes are soaking wet, and I smell like baked cat!! Aug. 9th: Tried to run some errands after work. Wore shorts, and when I sat on the seats in the car, I thought my ass was on fire. My skin melted to the seat. I lost 2 layers of flesh and all the hair on the back of my legs and ass . . . Now my car smells like burnt hair, fried ass, and baked cat. Aug 10th: The weather report might as well be a damn recording. Hot and sunny. Hot and sunny. Hot and sunny. It's been too hot to do •••• for 2 damn months and the weatherman says it might really warm up next week. Doesn't it ever rain in this damn state? Water rationing will be next, so my $1700 worth of cactus will just dry up and blow over. Even the cactus can't live in this damn heat. Aug. 14th: Welcome to HELL! Temperature got to 115 today. Cactus are dead. Forgot to crack the window and blew the damn windshield out of the car. The installer came to fix it and guess what he asked me??? "Hot enough for you today?" My sister had to spend $1,500 to bail me out of jail. Freaking Texas . What kind of a sick demented idiot would want to live here?? Will write later to let you know how the trial goes.
12. Found HWH leaking in the garage this morning. Its the original from the house and 7 years old. Single element 40 gallon electric. Supplies sufficient hot water for our needs (2 adults only) Any options that would provide any real savings in electricity, or just go out and buy the same type?? Thanks
13. where is the passenger lighter jack located? loving the bike but trying to find everything. Going on a hot Oklahoma birthday ride tomorrow my 50th. see ya on the road. Tony
14. Things that I have done to the TCI; 1. Removed it from the original mount on the bike to be under the false tank. 2. Replaced the diodes. They were corroded. (Hopefully i soldered them correctly) 3. Baked it in the oven to make sure it is dried out. I thought that I had it fixed. I connected the TCI up after baking it and the bike started right up. Filled the tank with gas and went for a ride around Pineview Lake and back. Had a little popping but it may be from needing to be synced. After letting the bike cool down it would not start again. So on a whim I baked the TCI again. This time for only 10 to 15 min hooked it up and the bike starts right up. I can ride it all day as long as I don't let it cool down much. While riding I noticed that if I let the rpms get down to 1200 It would all of a sudden drop to 0 with the bike still running but feeling like its missing on one cylinder. As soon as I rev it up a little it comes back. This is the first time that I have soldered anything this small (Lot of copper pipes when building my house) so I'm not sure if I did it correctly. What are the steps to solder correctly? I'm trying to get this going with out killing my budget.
15. I was sitting in the living room yesterday and noticed that it seemed unusually hot. Looked at my thermostat and it had gotten up to 83 in the house. A/C showed to be running but I looked outside and saw that the fan was not running on the outside unit. So....A/C is down. Did what checks I could do but didn't find the problem. Finally called the repair folks and they are supposed to be here this morning. It did cool off to 81 by this morning. Could have been worse I guess. Temps yesterday were in the 97 range with 50% humidity. Now to see what it is going to cost to fix this thing.
16. I haven't dug into the new 88VR yet...(took my wife for a ride today and she likes the ride better than the 83 or 84. One thing I have noticed....when the bike is hot I have NO ISSUES with slow starter syndrome that plagued both the older bikes. Is this probably because the PO fixed something (4 brush starter or 4 gu wire or better ground ala dingy's mod) Or Did they make some changes and improvements to correct the problem at the factory?
17. Okay ... I cracked. Having used a home made manometer for some time, generally with a decent amount os success, I cracked and bought a Motion Pro Sync Tool. It wasn't my first choice, but it was available and reasonably priced. I wanted a Morgans Carbtune, but I didn't want the wait. Set up of the tool was a breeze with clear instructions, and calibrating it was equally easy. I went to this trouble because I have had some difficulty getting the bike to idle correctly after a fast run. On the driveway it is fine, but when it's very hot the revs do not want to fall below 3000rpm, 2500 after I tweaked the Idle Mixture a little. There are no vacuum leaks and the carbs are clean. Even with my manometer I was suspicious that the carbs were out of sync. It only takes one of the four to cause a high idle. So ... Tool calibrated, engine hot and tubes fitted to inlet tracts ... Whoah! One carb had vacuum so high it was almost sucking the fluid out of the top of the clear tube. A quick adjusment brought that into line. The right bank only needed a slight tweak and the two banks together weren't too bad, but got the tweak they needed. After a final adjustment of the idle speed, all seemed much smoother. I will run it later and see if the problem has gone, or at least improved, but I have to say that the whole process took less than 10 minutes once the motor was warm, and I would happily recommend the Motion Pro tool. It does seem to work decently well.
18. I have an 88 VR. Last year the TCI nuked and I replaced it with the ignition from Checkloslovakia. Road for quite a while this spring now I'm having trouble with hot starts. Bike starts first time but won't start after being ridden for awhile. Will turn over once or twice then the starter disengages. Leave it set for an hour and come back to it and it will start. I don't know whats going on but the battery is good and when running charges at 12 volts. Anyone have any ideas?
19. I have a Drag Specialties liquid filled gauge installed by the PO with tap in usual place near the clutch. Pressure is within spec per the yammy manual so I believe it to be normal but as some of you know it's essentially 0psi with a hot motor at under 2k rpm. I have to assume it's reading the other side of the relief valve or something. Any of the experts here know why the readings are so darned low on a warmed up motor?
20. and the living is easy. Well, summer got here at 1:16pm EDT today, but, it feels like it has been summer for weeks with this hot weather we are having. Now, we get to look forward to the daylight hours to start getting shorter. RandyA
21. Dogman and his wonderful wife came visiting recentlhy, and brought some Hot Sex with them. They rode over six hours through rain threatening weather to bring it. We had a great visit and all enjoyed the Hot Sex and after that, we told stories around a campfire. Thanks Dave and Bernie!
22. We have had a fun day today! Sling and Peggy, RandyR, and Chuck came over today and helped George work on the valves. I cooked hamburgers and hot dogs with the trimmings and then we had a dulcimer jam session! What a way to spend the day!! http://s7.photobucket.com/albums/y262/venturerider/Sleeperhawks%20Mechanic/2011/Sleeperhawks%20Mechanic%2020110619%20Fathers%20Day/
23. hi again all. thanks a lot for great replies on my led question great group here will definetly be joining perm. but now i have problem. this is my first older bike so im not very sure of the mechanics but love the bike 1983 venture!! got it a month ago was idleing hard had a yamaha dealer fix he rebuilt carbs and changed plugs. ran great for 200 miles. then last night went for little cruise and ran very hot started dogging out from standing start offs got home noticed clicking from right rear cylinder the spark was jumping from plug boots to motor . to hot and dark to look at it . i dont think he canged plug wires do you think its just that or something worse? or i guess these are the put together yourself wires do you think it just came apart at the boot? thanks again all
24. Hello Everyone: Can anyone make a suggestion on hot riding gear for my wife? When it gets hot, she refuses to wear long pants and will not wear her leathers. She enjoys the sun and would rather wear shorts. I prefer she not get on the bike without proper protection. Does someone know of a lightweight protective riding pant that allows good airflow that she could wear over her shorts and then remove easily during stops?
25. Made it home to Texas from MD last night around 11:30pm. We took it easy on Sunday and just did 300 miles on back roads down to Lexington, KY. But Some family issues came up that I need to take care of, so yesterday we just kept riding - ended up doing the full 1,000 miles straight through in exactly 16 hours. It got prretty darned hot in the afternoon coming through those nasty rice fields in Missouri and Arkansas, but not really all that bad if you keep drinking lots of water. I've been riding long distances for 40 years, so the occasional 1,000 + day is no big thing, but Al has only been riding for the last six years since we bought the Venture, and this is the third unplanned iron but she has done - quite a few 500-700 mile days, but we do try to avoid the 1,000! I'm continually amazed at how she happily sits on that bike for 16 or even 24 hours straight and always wants to ride more when I suggest we stop for the night - what a partner!! It was great to see y'all in Ohio - lookin' forward to next year. Now, who wants to ride to Phoenix with me tomorrow? Gosse (and Mother Goose)
