  1. Hello everyone. Due to a major accident in April of 2011 I can no longer ride. I am very thankful that I am pretty much back to normal, which is being generous for me, but riding a motorcycle is out of the question for me. It has taken me this long to get to the point that I can even tell my story. It sure stinks, but it is life. While trying to slow down for a curve I got off the road. The ground was soft and the bike stopped, but i didn't. I went off the front of the bike and dug a trench in the ground with my brand new Arai helmet. I firmly believe it was that helmet that prevented some serious brain damage. After a 3 week stay in Vanderbilt hospital and 3 months at home, I was able to return to work driving a towboat on the Mississippi River. As I said, I am truly blessed. Due to this accident I have gotten rid of what was left of the bike and am in the process of disposing of other things. The first and most important is a trialer that I won from Venture Riders two years ago. I have listed the trailer in the Classified section. It is with a very heavy heart that I do this, but it needs to be used. It is a shame to allow it to set and not be utilized. My thanks to everyone for allowing me to tell my story in here. I pray that every one of y'all have a wonderful and very safe ride every time you set out. Steve Stewart
  2. So with this extremely hot weather we are having here I am in need of a new helmet. My current helmet does not have enough ventilation and my head is overheating trying to ride. Any suggeations on the coolest (temperature rated not appearence) helmet would be appreciated. I am looking for a 3/4 with a flip up clear screen. Thanks in advance for your suggestions. Rob
  3. No, not the hard way, I just did that but as a result I really should replace my helmet, so I'm thinking helmets are tested to see if they meet DOT standards, but how much more can they handle? I realize there is a point where it doesn't matter how strong the helmet is, 'cause you're going to be dead. A $60 helmet and a $600 helmet both meet DOT standards, all I've found so far is that the more expensive helmet is going to be quieter, more comfortable and may (or may not) fit better. Someone who wears a helmet when he/she has to to cross state lines for a couple of hours will buy the cheapo one, I'm more interested in protecting my noggin best I can, so is there a study which actually compares fail values for various helmets so that you can see whether you pay for the name, or if a specific helmets actually has better protection value along with comfort and fit. :scratchchin: Oh, I'm thinking a modular if it will allow me to put it on and take it of without having to remove my glasses (titanium frame)
  4. My wife loves to ride but her big hang up is helmet hair. now she has short hair and she has tried do rags & all but when we go in anywhere she ends up putting on a cap. She fusses and says "I don't ALWAYS want to have to wear a cap, I do like to look nice for u " which I"m thankful & heck she'd look good in a paper sack, okay to my question... How do u ladies deal with helmet hair?
  5. I am looking to replace my HJC and Scorpio open faced helmets, but I am having difficulty finding helmets that can be fitted with the Yamaha standard open-faced head-set and mike. I have a Scorpio half-helmet, and used Velcro to secure the mike. It works OK, but is not ideal. The HJC is getting old (6 years), and works well, but the new ones I have found in the dealers will not readily accept the mike. Anybody using a recent open face helmet with the audio gear that they are really happy with?
  6. I am looking for a helmet communication system. I have a GPS (Bluetooth compatible) and an Iphone. My GPS is in sync with my iphone but I would like to listen to my MP3 player on my GPS thru wireless connection. I ride single the majority of the time and really only need for my music and possibly the phone. What system do you recommend and do you have to have a specific helmet for the system? I am thinking about going to a full face modular helmet, any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
  7. I'm still trying to convince my wife to ride to Vegas and back. I've sent my seat to Butler for the customization, and to lower my seat so I'm flat footed with the floorboards and to give her a little more height forward view. Planning on getting her an extra boost in the back seat also for more forward view. Right now she says her eyes are planted right in the center of the back of my helmet and she is always turning her head way left or way right. Getting neck strain in just a ride less than 60 minutes. Maybe a few books on CD. Stopping at upgraded overnight stays. A visit to our granddaughter both down and back. Also reshape the inners of her helmet to relieve stress points. Oh ya, having my machinist Goldwing buddy mill a set of passenger arm rests. Maybe I can find a coffee holder with Starbucks imprinted on it. A luggage rack for her suit case. Lastly a spending budget. There is just one more thing. If I could just figure out a way to gently lock her helmet in place with some flexibility. She has recalled back in our youthful days on my 80 Goldwing that she sometimes would like to take a nap. I think that would do the trick. So I'm engaging the group for some creative solutions for the helmet lock. Humorous solutions like getting a new wife isn't going to work. I love what I have and am afraid what I'd get on a trade in. I don't think I could out live the break in period. So put on your creative thinking hats.
  8. Anyone out there have a five pin headset they want to part with. I have a 2004 Venture R/S and too many helmets and not enough headsets. My newest helmet is a full face. Give me a price. Thanks.
  9. I have some minor scratches on my helmet visor that I'd like to try to polish out. Does anybody know what might work? I'd like to try before I buy a replacement, so I wanna keep it cheap. Seems I remember hearing somebody say they used toothpaste on hard plastic, but I'm a little afraid it would be too abrasive and leave it scratched worse. Any thoughts? Thanks. Bert
  10. 4 to 4 Nasty boys not perfect need good cleaning a LX Star half helmet.
  11. Anyone have 1 or 2 helmet locks that bolt to the RSV trunk mounting bracket that I could get?? Thank's Joe
  12. what would be the best way to keep a thread active without being annoying?? alright I've got my helmet on and ready for battle, LOL
  13. just got this email today!http://www.chromeworld.com/ProductDetails/Kits/KitDetails.aspx?KitItemID={f11f68e6-66e6-4566-8359-893d1b1ac534}&pname=GMax+G67s+Open+Face+Helmet+With+Headset+Special&Referer=QUICK_SEARCH&Alias=gm004&ptct=BS-SR&CTitle=&.
  14. I finally got the trike put back together after having the trunk sealed. We went for a nice 75 degree ride through the hills. She got her first helmet hair of the season. And best of all we got ICE CREAM. Life is good. Mike and T
  15. I have to replace my winter helmet and I think I want to get another modular.Any cons to some of the helmets that some have used.ease of one hand operation.etc. I love the modular and also love my tinted inner visor, just move a lever and instant shades.lol Im looking to spend under $250 us
  16. Have a 2011 Yamaha Stryker - Am looking to move up to a 2012 Venture. Question: If I purchase a helmet with built in speakers and connector - can I connect to the factory radio and listen to the radio through the helmet speakers? tia..
  17. :301:I usually don't order a helmet that has not been tested, but I did in this case because it was different. Got it on Friday from J & P. The looks surprised me for the good. It really is different, the eye ports like star wars Darth Vader, I can see lower without tilting my head down. The shell seems a little thicker than my Nolan, and is stiffer when taking it on and off, but once you get it on my ears are really comfortable, nothing is touching them. Whine? What whine? THIS IS THE QUIETEST HELMET I HAVE EVER OWNED. With the visor almost closed or closed no noise. Had to turn the radio up a little to hear it better. And the face shield did not fog up when riding with the shield closed. I am very happy withe this helmet. tew47
  18. I'm looking for a comfortable helmet insert so I can utilize the RSV's intercom, radio & CB. I have a full-face Hawk helmet, my wife wears a half helmet. Thoughts? First Venture ever owned. 2001 Royal Star Venture, purchased on 30 January 2012. -Dave
  19. Hello all, I am looking for recommendations on a half helmet. Is there one that is narrow (to avoid the mushroom - darth helmet look) but is still DOT approved. I understand that there are carbon fiber helmets too. Are the fiber ones closer to the head? The photos online always show an auxiliary view and the vendors never provide dimensions. I have looked at the Vega XTS, HCI-100-134 and the ACC. Does anyone have a recommendation? I also understand that safety supersedes style, but I have a half helmet currently that is very heavy and is more of the mushroom style. Thanks in advance! Nick P
  20. I Just received the Buddyrich cable last week and had some time today to install it. I like some of you need pictures and and maybe how too Instructions. # 1 Remove Fairing # 2 Looking from the front of the bike on the left you will see this cluster of color connectors (Lift the RED Connector up a bit and un-plug it. # 3 I put a little DIELECTRIC grease in the cables # 4 Now take the BuddyRich Cable and plug it into each of the bikes corresponding cables. # 5 This is what it looks like after the New Cable is plugged in. # 6 Take some Black Electrical Tape and wrap them up to help water proof them. # 7 Run the Small wire from the BuddyRich Cable through your fairing up the (MICROPHONE IN-PORT) on the Zumo Cradle # 8 Turn Zumo on and make it find your Cell Phone.. (TEST IT) Plug your helmet into your bike connector like always then have your Radio System on AUX switch to headset and make your call. I also Ran my Other 3.5 Connector in the AUX Port on the Zumo Cradle For my Loaded MP3 Music that I play from my Zumo. My Findings Were More then I Expected. The set-up worked perfect. I first called my Daughter from the bike with my helmet on from the garage. she could her me perfect and I could here her perfect as well. Then I Had my Wife come out and put her helmet on she could hear the call being made and My Daughter talking to me. My wife could not talk to our Daughter. But she could tell me what to say to her from helmet to helmet. Also , with the Zumo's MP3's Playing it will Mute it when the call is being made or coming in. I also was able to have the speakers on the bike on (not the H/S) and hear and talk to my Daughter. So for the price this set-up works PERFECT! Thanks Buddy for taking the time and making these cables for us. (Buddy make sure you add anything else I Forgot before Don puts this into the TECH Files.) I Hope this helps some of you folks. (not sure why these two photos are at the bottom of this page) --1/12/12 -- NOTE:: I have noticed that the 3.5 connector will fail after a year or so , so I have been going with the (GOLD PLATED ENDS) they seem to last longer from all the vibration going on. Jeff
  21. Hubby and I use the Shark bluetooth sets. I have a couple of questions. Where can I find a new helmet clip to attach the transmitter to the helmet? Mine broke at Vogel somehow. Where can I find new speakers and mic that have better sound quality than the ones that came in the kit? The stock set is really tinny and talking to each other is garbled.
  22. Where exactly is the front plug located? I just purchased 2 83s with CB's and i cant seem to find the front helmet plug. The back one is located in the same place as it was on my 85 i used to have. I havent dug into it much, but i plan on tearing both bikes apart to make one good bike. Also there is no push to talk switch for the CB. I'm just a little confused on how that works too, but any information would be much appreciated. Thank you CJ
  23. I won this helmet at the STAR Midwest event last weekend in Indianapolis. Black, new, size XL, normally I wear a Large, but the person offering the item for the charity auction said it ran small, so I tried it on and it was a great fit. Here is my review after a nice one hour ride last night: I got to try out the Shark Evoline helmet last night. This is a heavy helmet, I feel it and the weight naturally shifts depending on where you have the chin bar, feels best with the bar back, but I don't think it will be a problem in either case. I had it on for an hour and it was fine. Weight was one of the worse comments about this helmet that I have read in reviews, I don't think it will be a problem for most people. But most important, it was the best helmet I have ever had for the least amount of air buffeting or wind noise/blast. With the bar back and the shield up, it was a nice flow of air around the face, with the shield down, there was a noticeable slow flow under it but not up into the eyes. With the bar in front position and the shield open, there was a little air around the face, and with the shield down, I could only feel a tiny tickle on the bottom of my beard. That was the important test, because if the helmet let a LOT of air up inside around the chin/mouth/eyes with the bar down and the shield closed it would be hard to stay warm in winter, but this promises to be a very comfortable and warm helmet in winter, with convertible features and usefulness well into spring and starting early fall. Yesterday it was totally comfortable. NOTE: temp about 67, winds calm. Bike: 89 VR with Baker wind wings and stock windshield. Most helmets put a lot of air up under the shield on this bike. Speeds, city to 55 country to 70+ mph highway. So now I look for a headset system for it.
  24. Hey guys, Just wondering how many of you out there are using a smart phone instead of a dedicated GPS. After all, there's only so much room on our handlebars, and you can't beat the functionality of a smartphone. I'm using a smaller smartphone on my bike-it's about 2/3 the size of an I-Phone type phone. I wanted a smaller one so it would definitely fit on the handlebars and so I would still have room for my cupholder. The phone only cost $50 through Metro PCS and has all the usual Android features. Another great thing about the smaller phone is I was able to get a cheap phone holder at Wally World for about $8. I removed the back (designed to insert into an automotive AC vent), then used two zip ties to attach it to the handlebars. A lot less expensive than a Ram-type mount and uses up way less space too! I use a patch cord to hook it up to the accessory jack on the cassette player and everything plays right through the speakers. Of course I can play it through my helmet speakers too. It all works great. So instead of just GPS I can also play Pandora internet radio (for free) unlike XM. And of course you can play all of your MP3 music through it. And I can also make calls through the helmet microphone and helmet speakers. It will also voice dial for you. Only thing is I haven't perfected is the right intercom volume to be able to hear and be heard by the caller but will still reduce windnoise to a manageable level. Now don't get me wrong, I'm not advocating using the phone often while riding, I think it's too dangerous. But for occasional use on a country road it's pretty cool to have the ability to do so if you're very careful. And of course on top of all that you've got the camera on the phone handy whenever you want to use it! I'm sure there's a lot of guys way smarter than me already doing this...I just wanted to throw it out there. Ride Safe, 1/2crazedbikr
  25. My RSV has had a backfiring problem, since I went from aftermarket back to stock pipes. It has been my number one priority to resolve this issue. Well, my sync tool came in yesterday and I synchronized the carbs. What an easy job! They were way out of adjustment. I rode the bike to work this morning with NO Backfires! Unbelievable! On to the next project... When I bought my 2000 RSV three weeks ago, the helmet speakers and mic booms and cords were in a bag and the guy said he never used them. When I inspected them, they were majorly dry rotted. (must have been stored in a hot garage.) So, I would like to buy new helmet speakers and mic booms and associated wiring and a couple of helmets that this equipment would fit comfortably in. Can you guys point me in the right direction? Thank you, kindly... dana
