  1. EDITED FOR CLARITY.....First....I'm talking about my 83 VR, No cruise my bike will only start when in neutral. What a PITA!!!! I have the heel/toe shifter with some "slop" .... it seems really tricky to find neutral. So while everyone else is 1/2 mile down the road...I'm still fumbling trying to get my ride started! Every other bike I have ever owned would start as long as the clutch in...regardless of if it was in gear or in neutral! The kick stand switch works because if I kick it into gear when the stand it down it shuts the bike down. The stand indicator on the LCD screen doesn't show but that graphic does show when it cycles thru when I first turn on the key. Is there some mod I can do to let it start even if the bike is in gear as long as the clutch is in? (and side stand up) I would hope to still allow the neutral indicator to operate. I"m not real good at electrics...so if there is any fix...I would appreciate any explaination to be in simple terms for us simple people. Thanks in advance!
  2. After owning my 83 VR for year I'm finally getting round to fixing a few of the niggles including the second gear (currently in the process of removing the engine - gratefully assisted by all the articles on this site.) I have question on the Second Gear kit for those that have used it before I order it - Does it contain anything more than the four parts listed? I ask as the cost of the four individual parts appears to be less (a lot less in some places) than the kit, so is there something extra? As an aside I tried the Battery Sensor fix and couldn't get it to work with the 1K, 2.2K or variable resistors, so I disabled it directly on the CMS circuit board by breaking the relevant circuit and using a pull down resistor. I can take pictures if anyone is interested. Also I had a fun issue with the flashers (or indicators for any of us Brits) - they only worked when turned to the left. Turned out the Hazard Switch had some loose contacts than only made contact depending on gravity. Great site BTW with lots of useful information.
  3. 83 Blue Venture in good shape what is it worth? They are asking $1,100. Will check 2nd gear and frame. Thanks Rod
  4. Well it fianlly happened, second gear has been popping out, well when I left for work this morning went to shift into third gear and it wouldnt go in, downshifted to second, no problem, down to first no problem, went back up through the gears, still will not go into third, had to turn around and get the other scoot out to go to work, glad it didnt happen after I got halfway there. I have been knowing I needed the split washer fix, well now looks like I am forced into it, thank goodness I have the other bike to ride, the bummer is finally got everything working right on the 1st gen, and this happens, guess I will start tearing it down either this weekend or next. I will have to go back and find that excellent tech article about doing "The Fix". At least this is the last thing that needs to be done to make her good again!!! Got to get some help over to pull the engine out, maybe I can get 86er and Wingman to help in that area, maybe between the 3 of us we can geterdone.

    Super Tech 85W-90

Does anyone use super tech gear oil 85W-90, or can it be use might be a better question. Thanks
  6. Hello: I am looking at a '85 VR to buy for parts, and am considering restoring it instead. It runs well, just needs cosmetic work. Anyway, I am not sure if this bike has the second gear problem and would like to know if I can trace the serial number to see if it has the problem. The owner does not have any info on the problem and is not familiar with the second gear problem. I thought I saw a discussion in this forum about serial numbers and model years but can't find the thread, either in General Discussions or the 1st Gen Tech Section. Does anyone remember the thread and, if not, can I go to Yamaha with the serial number to check and see if this bike has the newer harder washers or pins installed? Thanks for any help Jim
  7. I'm not sure if I shorted something out or what, but when in Neutral the green light goes on, but the gear indicator still reads 1. Do I need to replace a fuse or something. Just a few days ago it would show N like it is supposed to. Thanks, Todd
  8. I may have read something on here somewhere about starting an 88 venture in gear. Are you suppose to be able to start one of these bikes in gear with clutch out. I am going to work on my cruse this weekend and I know somebody said something about a clutch switch.
  9. So I just picked up an 83 venture royale and wanted to thank this site for all the info that helped me decide. Over all the bike is in great shape, the only thing that i found that is not working is the The Temp guage.74k I was a little concerned about the 2nd gear problems known in these bikes, but it is at 74k and shows no signs of problems (i ran hard through 2nd gear to see if i could get it to pop out). I have a question about the brakes they seem very weak to me, but i am coming from riding sport standard bikes, for reference it seems to stop slowly, and even applying breaks very hard there is NO way i could lock either tire. anyways here a pic, and i enjoyed my first 250mi on it yesterday. http://www.imagechicken.com/uploads/1274634469037051500.jpg
  10. My "84 VR has the dreaded 2nd gear issue that's slowly getting worse. It's to the point that just keeping up with traffic leaving a light will cause it to jump out. It's a sidecar rig and 2nd is really handy to get the tugboat rolling. I just lucked into a trans gearset out of a '89 VR. It's my understanding that it the same as the '84 except it has some updated parts including the thrust washer. I didn't get the driven middle gear and I realize they should be kept as a matched set. No forks or shift drum either. http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4028/4511886358_c30c1708fa_b.jpg I'm debating how to proceed. Do it just put this split thrust washer on in my 84 and call it done? Do I swap in this entire gearset? If I do that do I have to swap the middle gear to keep a matched set? I'm assuming that I would have to re-shim everything them too. Doesn't the worn split washer affect middle gear backlash? If so it would seem that it's pretty forgiving. Should I swap this 2nd gear wheel and 5th gear wheel onto the 84 shaft? I assume you should swap over the the 5th gear pinion too since it meshes with the 5th gear wheel, but I've changed many automotive trans gears w/o replace the mating one without issue. Is undercutting the dogs necessary or is it just a bit of insurance? The answers to some of these questions may become self evident when I get it apart. Any other magic I need to know? I know that's a lot of questions but I'm trying to gather as much input as possible before I open her up.
  11. What do you guys think? It is starting to have 2nd gear issues. Would it be worth it to buy and then put the motor from an '88 in it? Dave
  12. I have searched the site to death about the whine these bikes have but need a little clairification on it. Is the whine everyone talks about the gear noise when accelerating up through the gears? I get a loud whine or growl I would call it when going up through the gears, it softens up when cruising and then at higher speeds I don't hear much at all. Just checking to see if the growl is what everyone is calling a whine? I know mines not worn with only having 6,000 miles on it but just want to be sure nothing is wrong before the long summer trips. This is the first Venture I've owned since many years ago. My other bike is a Harley Road King and it makes all kinds of strange noises but that is normal for them. I have changed all my fluids except for the antifreeze which I am going to do tomorrow(can't believe I have to pull the tank to do it), and I am waiting on new tires as these are the original 2000 tires on it now. i just want to be sure I have covered everything before hitting the road. I have split the fairing and braced the windshield and repaired the tabs on the windshield chrome thanks to the info here. I have certianly gotten my money's worth out of the site already so I was glad to donate my 12.00. thanks to all who have helped me so far and I look forward to meeting some of you out there on the road one day.
  13. A couple of these ATGATT threads got me thinking (oh nooooo). What do you use your bike for? If you need to run to the corner store for a gallon of milk, and your an ATGATT kind of guy (or girl), do you gear up or do you just not ride a motorcycle? What's your cut off point on riding, gear up for a 30 minute ride but take the car for a 20 minute jaunt? The reason that I ask, is that I don't. Wear all that gear that is. If I'm in the yard washing the dog and she tips over the dog shampoo, and I need to run up town for another bottle....I'm going in what ever I happen to be wearing at the moment and I'm going on a motorcycle. If I going to the beach, I'm riding there in shorts and taking a towel. I ride everywhere I go, for the most part. So, what do you do? This doesn't need to be a big, safety gear debate (probably turn into one though). I'm just curious how you decide whether or not to ride.
  14. I just finished installing a new spring in my 1986 VR, using the kit from Sky Doc. First off, let me tell you that Sky Doc backs his stuff up with patience and understanding at a very high level. He put up with my nonsense (a result of not knowing what the H**L I was doing!) and more or less held my hand until the fog cleared and I saw what I was supposed to do! Now my VR hooks up like a VENTURE...a new one, that is! I was having slipping problems in higher gears and then after the first installation, I managed to have it in EVERY gear (Does that tell you how little I know about motorcycle mechanics?) But after Sky Doc and I talked quite a few times, he finally got through to my thick head and now the bike runs like it should. Other problems still exist, but it is nice to know when someone really follows through with his products like Sky Doc!!!!
  15. Hi, Perhaps I have gone blind but, I have looked in the various XVZ1x schematics I have and that are available here on VR.org and I am not finding info on how the dashboard gear indicator works. What I'd like to know is how does the indicator on the OEM dashboard know what gear the bike is in? What is the connection between whatever is sensing the gear in the transmission and the dashboard display? Ultimately, I'd like to know right down to wire colours and plug pin connections. I hope I am describing this clearly. Can anyone illuminate me on this, or point me to where it is shown in the schematics. Thanks, Brian H.
  16. Sorry about the spelling errors in the tiltel of this trread..... I ment to call it: Non-motorcycle specific Gore Tex (DWR) rain gear on a bike The recent rain gear thread got me thinking. Currently I own a Nelson-Rigg AX-1 Mark III two piece rain suit to ride in. I also own some LL Bean Gore Tex rain gear to fly kites in and can spend all day in the rain without that "i live in a plastic bag" feel of sealed rain gear like my Nelson-Rigg AX-1 Mark III....... but the coat I have is 3/4 length so it would not work well on a motorcycle.... I can buy non-motorcycle marketed Gore Tex rain gear for a LOT less than the stuff that is marketed for the motorcycle market. Has anybody used this type of product on a bike????? what did you like/dislike???? Please keep your responses to Gore Tex treated fabrics or other Durable Water Repellent treatments. I want to find gear that is water proof and breathable for higher rider comfort.
  17. I've been offered an '08 RSV. I WANT IT! Outside of getting the financing for my new toy [always fun], I'm looking at what other stuff I'm going to need for it. Top of the list is a helmet/headset set up so I can use the cb/cassette deck. 650 Customs don't come with these lil goodies. I have not gotten anything of the kind installed on my Wee Beastie as yet so I don't have any of the gear needed for this. All of my research into RSV's has been into the bike itself and not the add ons/oem equipment like the radio/cb systems. I don't know if the current owner's gear will fit me [providing he'll sell it] so I'm looking at what I need to get for it. Oh Fun! Any help, info, suggestions, etc. would be appreciated. I will be figuring out a way to install a Sirius Sat Radio on the bike and adding that to the sound system. Normally I will ride with either a full or flip face helmet but that might change when I'm finally behind a full fairing/windshield. But I won't be riding in anything less than a 3/4. Here's hoping everything works out and I'll have my new wheels in time for my so-called vacation this summer!
  18. It was really windy here yesterday. I was riding home from work directly into a 30-40MPH head wind. This is the same route that I have driven every workday for the last 10 years so I know it well. I pulled up to a red light, on level ground, fairly new concrete surface. I was first in line at the light. With every wind gust the bike was pushed backwards and my feet on the ground (rubber soled shoes) did not have enough traction to hold the bike against the wind. I had to hold the front brake to keep from backing into the car behind me. This is with the wind blowing on the most aerodynamically clean side of the bike. After reading in several threads recently about parking in gear, and tales of the wind blowing over the bike, I am reformulating my beliefs as to how to safely park this thing. I can believe that with the bike parked with a strong tail wind that the faring and windscreen are acting like a parachute that the wind could move the bike forward enough to fold up the side stand. Parking in gear will/should help to prevent this from happening. I know that I once parked a manual transmission cage pointed up a hill and left it in first gear, and it was able to turn the engine over backwards while it chugged slowly down the hill. I do not know how much force it would take to move a bike while parked in gear but I am certain that it would be a lot more than in neutral.
  19. Actually one leads to the other ..... Does it do any harm to pull the clutch and start in first gear and subsequently, does it do any harm to leave it parked in gear so it doesn't roll on a hill???
  20. Especially if it's a trike. I was just reading another post and a member was asking about leaving his bike in gear while starting and it brought back a memory for me. We had just left Kerrville Tx. heading home from our fantastic winter trip. After a couple of hours the Shuttle was getting low on jet fuel so I pulled into a truck stop on Hwy. 281 just north of Johnson City at Round Mountain. I get out and say hi to the fellow on the other side of the pump and get started on my fill up. The fellow on the other side gets in his pickup and start to leave but only goes a few feet and I see him jump out of his truck and start running out in front of it. Next thing I see is a white Goldwing trike with no rider backing up across in front of his pickup and heading right for my trailer. Lucky for me, and the trike owner, the pickup man was able to stop the trike with about three feet to spare. He shut the engine off and put the bike in gear just as the owner comes running out of the store. The first words out of his mouth, "you didn't shut it off did you". Apparently his charging system was out and the battery wouldn't start the bike. After giving him the lecture about leaving a vehicle parked in neutral without blocking the wheels or applying the brakes I calmed down. I explained to him what a bad day he and I both could of had. The pickup man and myself gave him a push and it started right up and he was on his way. All's well that ends well. I can laugh about it now but it sure wasn't funny at the time.
  21. with 2 up should I run it in 5th or 4th?
  22. Hello All, My new purchase which is a 2006 Royal Star Deluxe makes a whining noise through all gears. Not while I am shifting. After I am in any gear. Is this normal or should I have it checked out? I have 60 days from 4/3/10. Thanks Moe:Venture:
  23. I have been reading about changing to a VMAX gear, just wondering is it worth it? Would like to have a little more acceleration but do not want to loose to much gas milage, is this possible?
  24. Bought the bike used with 3000 km, it now has 36,000 kms and when I changed the rear gear oil I noticed the plug has a nipple on the end, and the nipple on my plug was coated in either grease (I hope) or gunk build up (hope not). Could it be grease? sure felt like it... Greasy fingers crossed!
  25. Sometimes acting like a juvenile can get you in trouble. The other day I was riding down the highway at about 60mph when up ahead I saw a motorcycle that I was slowly gaining on. I was probably going abut 5mph faster than him, so I wasn't gaining that fast. I decided that when I got up fairly close behind him, I would just fall in line and follow to the next town. When I got close enough I could see it was a Harley and it was pretty new. So just as I got to the right spot and slowed down a little to keep pace behind him he saw me and after saying something to the girl on back (probably: "watch this") he twisted the throttle and took off. At first I thought "oh well, so what". Then a little voice (no doubt the devil) said "You know what?...You don't really want to play this game with me". So, being that it was a long straight stretch and no traffic, I dropped it down a gear and let loose. I was doing 95 as I blew past him and heard him drop a gear as I went past and throw the coals to it, but to no avail. There was zero chance he would be able to catch up, much less pass me. I was feeling pretty pleased with myself as I started back into the right hand lane, but right then, the bike started wobbling. The back wheel was kind of fishtailing back and forth and the handlebars was shaking. Scared the you-know-what out of me. Was picturing a hundred yard long red smear on the pavement. However, I ever so slowly eased off the throttle and by the time I was back down to about 85mph, it was riding normally. Good thing the air was warm and dry enough to evaporate all the sweat that was pouring off of me, otherwise, the folks behind me would have thought they had hit a sudden rain shower. Anyway, it was a stupid kid type thing to be doing and almost bit me in the butt. Feller my age should not do adolescent, immature stunts like that and you can bet I will think twice before doing it again. (OK, I've thought twice. I'm over it. Time to do it again the next time someone on a Harley tries that with me.) P.S. I used to own a Harley, and I know what they will and won't do. They are not the fastest thing on the blacktop.
