  1. Our Engineering Lab Manager just sent the guys in the lab an e-mail where he had filled up with gas and used his debit card. When he checked his bank account balance the next morning, he had a $75 hold for that purchase. He called his bank and they told him that alot of gas stations are now doing this for purchases at the pump. One of the guys in the lab asked his wife that works at a bank and she said she is seeing a $100 hold for each purchase from the pump at some gas stations. The last time I was on a big group ride with about 30 bikes and we stopped for gas, everyone did the "pay-at-pump" thing. If you were on a ride that had several fillups, you better make sure you have plenty of money in your checking account if you are going to pay at the pump. Otherwise those $10 purchases could end up being a lot more if the bank tags you for insuffient funds in your account because hundreds of dollars are on hold. I called our local tv news program and they were not aware of this, but were very interested in what I had to say. Also, the banks are not interesting in doing anything about this as they are making easy money from insuffient fund charges on each transaction involved. It also appears that purchases paid for inside are charged only for the amount of the purchase. RandyA
  2. My bike has been at dealer shop now for 5 weeks. They say I have stuck valve and should be using ring free or techron with my gas and use premium gas only. They have agreed to fix under warranty. After all, they are the only one that has serviced my bike and never mentioned this when I drove it off the showroom floor. I love my bike but don't want this to happen in future. I don't see where I have done anything wrong but I have not been putting additives in gas between fill ups. Has any one else had this issue?
  3. My friend has a Midnight Venture and recently had a carb repair at a local shop. Now the bike will crank and run on choke but as soon as he turns the choke off the carbs start dumping gas on the ground. I'm thinking float setting is wrong. If anyone has had similar problems please share.
  4. Like several on here lately, I replaced my diaphragms and even though the bike ran stronger under wide open throttle, my low rpm torque seemed to go down some and my gas mileage seemed to drop a little also. I was getting around 38 to 41 with the old diaphragms and the next two fillups after the new diaphragms were about 37-38 and that was 1-up. Yesterday I replaced the .123 thick washer on the needle with three #4 washers that came to about .093 and made a 250 mile ride today, 2-up. Before at about 140-150 miles, the red light was blinking on fuel. Today at 150 miles I still had two bars left. I should have filled up at that point, but I then did a twelve mile pull up the mountain from Morganton, NC to the Blue Ridge Parkway and stopped and filled it up. At the top of the mountain I had 162 miles on it and had just dropped to one bar. When I filled up and put all I could get in it, it only took 3.6 gallons, so that works out to 45 miles per gallon. And, not only did my MPG's go up over ten percent, but now I feel I have the low rpm torque back. So, if you have not considered making the change on the needle valve adjustment, I am strongly suggesting that you do it. It only took me a few minutes to do it, but I don't run the lower fairings anymore and all I had to take off is my bikini side panels. Even taking all the lower fairings off, it is not a big deal and well worth the effort. RandyA
  5. rode the devils triangle in oliver springs tenn. 529 curves on a mountain side. dam makes the dragon tail a ride in the park. we found out about this from some guy at the gas station. it was on our way to the skyway so we rode it. has anyone here rode it? will worth the ride if you have`nt.
  6. I broke the mounting tab under the gas cap door off so I need a new one. I would really like to find a black one so I don't have to paint it. If you have one let me know. Thanks.
  7. OK, I'm cheap, and had too much time on my hands! Here's my $2.00 GPS mount for my 2nd gen: http://i81.photobucket.com/albums/j204/DragracerUSA/GPS%20Mount/IMG_7849.jpg I started with this cup: http://i81.photobucket.com/albums/j204/DragracerUSA/GPS%20Mount/IMG_7846.jpg I centered the gas cap in the cup facing downward, and cut off the top 3.5" of the cup. I then mounted the flat stick on disk that came with the GPS to the bottom of the cup.. I screwed it to the cup just to be safe. I used a heat gun to mold the cup to fit the gas cap snugly. http://i81.photobucket.com/albums/j204/DragracerUSA/GPS%20Mount/IMG_7851.jpg http://i81.photobucket.com/albums/j204/DragracerUSA/GPS%20Mount/IMG_7852.jpg Here is is pushed onto the gas cap without the GPS mount stuck on. This is held to the gas cap by friction only. I just rode it over 2.5 miles of lime rock, and it never moved. http://i81.photobucket.com/albums/j204/DragracerUSA/GPS%20Mount/IMG_7850.jpg The cup came from Wal-Mart in a pack of 4 for $2.00. So technically, it really only cost .50 cents! To remove it, twist slightly and it pulls right off! http://i81.photobucket.com/albums/j204/DragracerUSA/GPS%20Mount/IMG_7853.jpg
  8. Hello all. I bought my friends 99 RSV about a year ago and have been having a blast riding since then. I have done numerous maintenance tasks (oil change, clutch fluid, carb sync, etc) on it since I have owned it. During the year I have noticed my gas mileage was right around 28-30 mpg which I thought was normal. During the meet and eat here in Daytona last weekend, and research on this forum, I found out this is not very normal. What are some things I can look at to improve this. The bike seems to run fine. Every now and then I get a back fire on deceleration (But very rare). One thing I know is that my friend put on a Road King muffler when he owned it and he thinks he rejetted it with a stage 3 kit???
  9. My 05 RSTD constantly smells of raw gas to the point where I shut the petcock off about 1/2 mile before my house so I can dare pull it into the garage. Been stinking for over a year. I find no sign of leaking gas or other visible problems. It was just serviced at 18K and the service manager has told me that "any bike smells when pulled into a garage" , "I can't see a leak so I can't fix it" or the latest "try another dealer". The bike does not run bad, 38-43 mpg at best, but the worst part is it smells like I spilled a can of gas on the garage floor. The other day I was following my son down the road and he could detect the smell of gas from his car in front of me while stopped at an intersection. The latest suggestion was to check the rollover valve in the fuel line. I had previously removed the K&N filter as some people thought that was the cause. HELP this bike is driving me nuts!......
  10. Ok, this has happened to me twice and now I'm at a loss as to what to do.. Allow me to describe the issue and hopefully someone can come up with a viable suggestion. On two occasions, I've basically run out of fuel, without a low fuel light, with the petcock in the RUN position (long end of lever DOWN). When the bike started to chug chug as it does when hitting the reserve levels, turning the petcock to RES (long end of lever vertically UP), the engine cough sputters and dies. The fuel quantity gauge shows 2 or 3 bars.. On both occasions, I've put a measured amount of fuel into the gas tank and refilled at the nearest gas station to a total amount of roughly 16L.. which means, the gas tank had more than it's Reserve Fuel quantity still in it, but unavailable! Whoa.. what gives? Books says it's a 22.5 litre tank with a 3.5 reserve.. so when I hit reserve, I should be at the 19 litre mark, right? In another thread, it was suggested to remove the petcock and check see if the system was working properly.. Unfortunately I haven't the location to start pulling such parts off the bike.. But I was able to perform a quick trouble shooting test.. but with unfamiliar results. The problem encountered would suggest that when I get to the reserve fuel amount, turning the petcock to RES results in fuel NOT making it to the engine and starving the engine of fuel.. Ahh OK.. so lets do a quick test here.. The fuel tank is FULL at this point.. My assumption is that there might be a problem with the RES fuel feed at the petcock but not fully understanding how it works nor having a proper diagram/drawing of what it looks like, I am assuming that there is something blocking the fuel feed when the petcock is in the RES position.. However, with a full tank of gas, when I put the petcock to RES with the fuel line disconnected, I observe a full stream of fuel passing through the petcock indicating to me that there is no blockage... Unless perhaps the system permits fuel from a FULL tank of gas to by pass a blocked RES feed path at the petcock (dunno if this makes sense the way I am explaining it) Am I doing this wrong whereas I really need to empty the tank with the petcock turn to the ON position, and then turn the petcock to see if there is a blockage? Dang I wish I had a garage to play in..
  11. Don't think I've seen this anywhere, and inquiring minds want to know. Literature says we have a 6 gallon tank. So I went to the gas station with a short piece of fuel hose and a gas can. When I got there, held the bike vertical and drained the tank from the petcock. Refilled it from the gas pump. 5.5 gallons. Now I (we) know.
  12. I have a 2007 venture it had a California title. Someone told me they put more emission parts on a california bike and thats why the gas mileage is poorer. Is this a myth or not?
  13. Yep. I finally took my first interstate ride on my original '98 Royal Star Silverado. It's been sitting covered in the heated garage for 11 years only to be ridden for an ice cream cone a few times per year. 2,109 miles in four days ; MI to OH to IN to KY to TN to NC and back around through the Dragon's Tail and the Parkway to TN to KY to OH and back to MI. Partied in Richmond, IN. Ate BBQ at Corky's in Memphis,TN. Ran out of gas on the way to Knoxville, TN . Scraped the floor boards through The Dragon . Rode through a thunder storm in KY . And back to 45 F in MI ! Hmmm ... think I'll head out to ME next weekend .
  14. Has anyone found a keyless gas cap that will work on a RSV?
  15. I was riding the V-Star Saturday, on my way over to meet folks for lunch at Bobby's BBQ (Augusta M&E) and had to stop for the first gas-up of the day. Imagine my horror when I stuck the key in the cap and discovered it was loose-fitting, and worse, would not come off! Eventually, I was able to maneuver the cap off, with a part or two spilling into my hand. To my dismay, I discovered that one of the two screws holding the whole assembly together was missing and the other one was quite loose. Well, not missing, exactly, because it was likely in the bottom of the tank, in a place that I could not possibly get to. I disassembled the cap completely because it was obvious that other parts might be missing or dislodged. Thankfully, I was able to put it all back together and make it operational again. Because the screw was fairly long (well over an inch) and I was in the middle of nowhere, I determined to continue the ride, thinking it highly unlikely that a screw that size could possibly wiggle its' way beyond the tank. An hour or so later I arrived intact at the meeting place, just a couple of minutes ahead of everyone else. After lunch, when we were all just about to head our separate ways home, I told my little tale to Bryan and mentioned that he might want to check his gas cap. Sure enough, a screw was missing on his gas cap, as well! So, this is just a little heads-up: you might want to pull out a phillips head screwdriver, pull off the gas cap, turn it bottom side up, and make sure the two screws are sufficiently tightened. TERRY
  16. Hi! I know this has come up several times here...but I just wanted to clarify. My 2000 RSV makes a loud Whining sound but only when throttle is closed...that is once i give it gas or steady gas the noise goes away. Is this the sound I hear so much about that is inherent in the machines or should I be concerned? Thanks in advance for your responses, Highway Star
  17. I am slowly getting this thing up and running. 86 VR 21000 miles. Does not leak when off or with key in on position. Shortly after I start the bike, gas starts running down the front coil of the rear shock and pukes out on the ground. I have pulled the fuel pump and tried to trace back all the gaslines I can see. Looks like it's leaking from above the rear shock mount and down the front of the shock? Cant see the actual leak. The PO left the tank on reserve and I have not moved it. I drained all the gas at the fuel pump and put a bit in today to get the bike running. Thanks for any suggestions.
  18. Hello All, I have a 2005 Royal Star Tour Deluxe that is leaking gas from the air cleaner. Last year I had this same issue but it was from the opposite side. The local shop said that they needed to put in a new needle and seat and then charged $700.00. Although, 45 days latter the same thing occurred again and they said that they had perform the same service, claiming bad fuel is the issue. So my riding season came to an end for the rest of the year because I did not want to spend an additional $700. With that said, can anyone provide any tips or suggestion to resolve this ongoing problem? I am mechanically incline, never worked on a bike but I have built a 12 sec, in the 1/4 mile, Lincoln Towncar. Thank you in advance!!!
  19. Clutchless shifting that is. Once I get up to 3rd gear, alot of times I am guilty of shifting to 4th and 5th without the clutch. I let of the gas of course, but does it do any damage. It's pretty smooth. Just wondering if I am the only one?
  20. Guy is seling localy this Venture and ad said is 99 venture. Can someone identify this bike by the badge on gas tank. I don't thik 99 is coming in midnight version. Or could be just painted. As far I can see is missing gas tank trim, and there is no studs on seat. As well hinges on sadlebag is blacked out.
  21. I'm looking for the little rubber holder that sits on the gas tank that holds the cord for the headset. Anyone have one they'd be willing to part with?
  22. I hope someone can help me - I brought my 85 VR out of storage recently and changed a starter that went last year (probably from driving thru torrential rains and hail last summer)(too close to the tornado!). I got the bike last year and I love it - I've fixed many things so far and want to get back to tip top shape - it's got GOBS of power. I removed the air cleaner and squirted some fuel into the carbs to get it started rite up!! Happy was I ! but it kept stalling. It will start and run on all cylinders when I squirt gas into it but it won't stay running. I hear and feel the fuel pump make a small noise and feel a bump when I turn the key on so I think it's working. The fuel filter is new as of last year and its transparent - I see white on the left side and orangy with fuel on the rite. The fuel gauge says it's full. I put Stabil gas stabiliser in it before winter. I looked for hours last nite on this site and read a lot of different posts and now I'm really confused as what to do first. I don't want to take it to the same dealer that wanted $1000.00 to fix my starter!!!!! I got it fixed for $107.35 - WHEW! I thot I'd be driving it home yesterday:doh:
  23. Just started the bike, (1987 VR), for the first time this season and before I decided to put the new tires on, I took it for a ride. Wasn't running great and when I looked down, there was a fast drip of gas out of one of the overflow tubs. The back carb on the clutch side is overflowing and running gas out. Think it had started to cause trouble last fall already but not to the point that it is now. How hard is it to work on the one carb, can I just remove and repair the one or can it be repair on the bike? I run sea foam through my bike quite often so don't think that will help. What is the easyest way to try to fix this problem? Thanks John
  24. My 87 xvz1300 seems to run ok. Back in Feb. Muffinman synched my carbs at the N.Ga/Sc m & e. all of the carp pistons are doing the same dance and it idles smoothly right where it's suppossed to:thumbsup2: But, I'm getting Horrible gas mileage at 20 MPG. GeorgeS suggested I start a new thread and get yall's input.:backinmyday::backinmyday: So, What do you think fellows:icon_smile_question
  25. I belong to the Virago website, but it's not as user friendly for me. I know there are Virago owners on this website....so here's my question. I have a 95 1100 Virago. I am wondering if there are any wind deflectors to put on it. I've tried doing searches but haven't seen anything. Everytime I ride, I have to hold my left hand, palm down, by the gas tank to deflect the wind. The crazy thing is it's only the left side. Don't know if they make them for Virago's or not. Anyone have any knowedge?
