  1. Will the bike run if the pick up coils a are shot. My 83 will idle fine but will not pull. I followed the test procedure in the tech article and got no readings on the 6 pin connector other than the ground. (Probobly doing something wrong) The 8 pin checked out fine. All 4 cyl are firing, carb sync new fuel fileter about 2 cans of sea foam. Fuel pump will fill a cup in seconds. Cleaned the connector on the side of the frame for the pick up coils. When I kick it off the center stand and try to pull away it dies and the choke will save it from stalling. If it does stall starts right back up. Any sugestions would be much appreciated frank:confused:
  2. Don, the wife, daughter, and myself, want to thank you and your wonderfull wife, along with all of the other fine folks, that made our visit to your home on m/d this year a wonderfull time and great trip. we will certainly return again next year to meet more fine folks and make more new friends and eat some more of the best ice cream we have ever had. you can also plan on another set of diamond cut fins to give away, as our way of saying thanks!! this years fins winner Kim Woodworth of OAK Hill Va. was shipped out this afternoon. anybody wanna guess who's bike these black fins came from?? thanx again Don, you guys rock:bighug: Mike/Cherie/Teresa
  3. Hey all - Got an '83 Venture Royale that has started intermittently displaying the low brake fluid level warning light... usually it pops on during acceleration in 2nd and 3rd gears. Checked the fluid levels and they seem fine. no drips, leaks or missing fluid at all. BTW ... brakes are working just fine as well. Anyone have any suggestions or ran into this before? Thanks in advance J
  4. After replacing my broken fairing & putting everything back together, all works fine except when I plugged in my helmet headset cable tonight to the bike when going for a ride & got a super loud high pitched constant screeching sound. It happens with different helmets, different cables, and when connected to either the front or rear connectors...so I must've missed something when reconnecting all the radio wiring. I have mic-mutes installed too. Radio & XM work fine thru speakers though. Anyone know what I might've missed before I split the fairing again & go hunting for things?
  5. A friend of mine has a 84 Venture that he has an electrical problem with. His battery died so he bought a new one and everything was fine. He left the key on and killed the new battery.....this is when the problem started....he decided to boost it with his truck and while the cables were hooked to the truck his helper struck the handle bar with the positive cable....the negative was hooked to the battery and the key was turned on. Now everything works....lights - horn etc but the starter won't engage....no offer at all. He has checked all the fuses and all appears fine. Sooooooooo any ideas? Keith
  6. I have been trying for some time to figure out why my 86 VR doesnt get the mileage some on here claim. Mine, ever since installing the 89 motor (and even with the original 86 motor) struggles to get just slightly over 30 mpg. In addition, the bike has always seemed not to have the umph at higher rpms. My old 88 ran like a scalded dog all the way up to redline. And I have done about all one can do, carbs, sync, plugs, wires, caps, compression is great, valves are right on, no vacuum leaks etc. Well, after reading another thread earlier this week about boost sensors, today I pulled the b/s vacuum line from the manifold, applied vacuum with a mity vac and it would hold nada, nil, ziltch. I had no choice but to pull the necessary stuff to completely remove the rubber vacuum line to check it out and it is just fine; no cracks, plastic connector or balancer, whatever that little gray plastic piece is called is just fine as well. Applied vacuum to just the hose and it holds vacuum just fine. I then pulled the b/s and tried applying vacuum direct to the sensor and you can suck air through it like a straw. That is the culprit in my mileage issue and can't help but call it the culprit in the lack of high end performance. So, does anyone have a good one they are willing to part with? If so, please let me know and I will gladly pay your price. There are several on fleabay but no way of knowing they are any better than the one I just removed. Hope this works. Thanks so much Herb
  7. Hello everyone, Before I start... 2005 RSTD, 50,000km. The sum of it is that my charging system is no longer working. I started it up at work a few days ago, seemed fine. Rode to the gas station, filled up, then all I heard was clicks and a slow single turn over of the engine before it died. I suspected that my old battery was,, well, old, so I replaced it with a new battery. Then the other day I went for a good ride and basically the same thing happened. I shut the bike down for a moment but couldn't get it fired back up. Both times I have to get a boost to get the bike fired up and back home. So my next step was to read through what I could on ventureriders.org to diagnose the problem. So far I have pulled the regulator/rectifier that sits right in front of the oil filter (what a complete pain in the butt to get out, had to loosen up the radiator and fight with it some to get the tools in there..) I checked the connection/pins and they look just fine, nothing burnt up. I am going to dig into the seat/battery area to check those wires tonight, see if I can spot some damage of any kind. Bar that, what should I be considering as a possible fix? I was thinking of getting the high output stator from Buckeye (I figure I could use it since I have a handlebar radio, tach, heated gloves, alarm system, sometimes my gps is plugged in as well). I figure if I can't see any damaged/loose wires and the r/r looks fine, then the stator might be suspect. I can replace/upgrade it, if it doesn't fix the problem then at least I have more power production.. Question: If I do replace the stator with the Buckeye, should I get a replacement Regulator/Rectifier as well? Is there a special high output R/R that goes with the high output stator? Does Buckeye sell one? I appreciate any comments and feedback! It's ashamed that the weather is perfect and I'm riding in my car. Having the windows down just isn't the same.. Thanks~!
  8. May 18th brought my 13th grandchild. Her name is Emmah Nicole weighed 7 lbs 14 ozs. 21" long mother and baby doing fine BTW my oldest grand child (now 20) and youngest Emmah have the same Birthday
  9. Boy this is the toughest thing I have ever went through, my baby went to the Army a couple weeks ago. I am missing him so badly. How do those of you who have went through this get through it?? I am a mess thinking about him. He is in Ft Benning Army Airborn Infantry. He had been in the junior soldier program and worked to obtain E3 before leaving for bootcamp. I went from having my baby, my son at home to having an empty room. I have had custody of my boys since they were 1 and 2 without a Mother in the picture. When my oldest graduated, entered the workforce and moved on it was tough, but he is still here in town which makes it easier. With my youngest it was like one day here, next day gone. I am sure he is fine. But I have always been there to make sure they were ok. Now I have to trust in my heart things are ok. Nights seem to be the hardest to get through still. I know it wil get easier as time goes by. Prolly just was wanting to vent a little. Thanks for listening to lonely Dad..... Back to your regularly scheduled programming
  10. Went for a short ride today and my Garmin 2720 won't acquire any sattelites.... It worked fine 3 days ago...I keep my bike in my garage and its pretty humid in there because I'm always hosing out the dog kennel....do you think this is a humidity problem? Brought it in the house and have it near my air conditioner hoping it will " dry " out..I have a nuvi 250 that I can use when I go to MD...Just wondering if I'm on the right track....I'D rather have my 2720...I'M just more comfortable using it...Any ideas......... ps... I have power and all other systems seem to work just fine except for the navagating.............
  11. Hi everyone. I'm new to the forum and I'm not sure if this has been discussed before. I did have a good look through the threads but couldn't find anything that could help. So I'm hoping that someone here can help me. I have a Royal Star that I have stripped down to be repainted and some some TLC wotk on as well. Bike 1997 Royal Starr XVZ1300 I have done the following work; Hand Polished Controls New Clutch Cylinder New Foot Controls Resprayed New Battery Filters etc Many other little bits now worth mentioning. I put it back together last week and tried to crank it over and the starter motor spins but there is no spark at the spark plugs. As the starter motor spins and the coils and leads were fine prior to the work I did (it was starting and going fine), I think that the digital igniter might be blown. Does this happen? When I hooked it all up and tried to crank it the first few times I did hear a pop from under neath the seat sounding like a fuse blowing. But all the fuses were fine. If it is the igniter is it better to get a performance after-market one such as the Dynatek 3000 one? Thanks for you help in advance.
  12. Grab a beer boys ....this is a long one. Ok ...two beers. Ok, here's the problem. A '95 Lincoln Towncar 4.6. About 2 years ago I went to leave for work and the car would crank like crazy but no spark. Checked battery and it was well charged and everything seemed to be fine except it would not fire. I tried everything I knew about Lincolns and finally had it towed to my oldest friends shop. He is the ONLY person I have trusted to work on my vehicles. Honest and straight up shop that does what is needed and no screwing around. His service staff is top notch and well trained. So he has it for the day and calls and says it's fixed. The ignition module was bad. That was all. Everything else was fine. Only $240.00 for the module and $75.00 for the tow. Picked it up and it was fine. Started great as it always had. Then......13 months later......it does it again. Same trouble shooting process and the tow to his shop. The ignition module was found to be bad again. Plugged in a new one and it fired right up. But he did go to bat for me and got the first module replaced by warrenty. It was out by a month but they covered it. I asked him to keep the car for another day and do a full trouble shooting rundown on it to see if he could find if there was something causing the modules to fail. He did.....and found no problems at all. Then.........6 months later it did it again. He had a mechanic run a new module to where I was 30 miles away and we plugged it in and it fired right up. Again. And this time the module could not be covered under warranty. Crap. Another $240.00. So back to his shop and we spent an evening going through the cars system. Had a couple of his techs hanging around as they were curious, and I was holding the beer cooler. The only thing that seemed to keep coming up was a possible problem with excessive resistance causing the module to fail. Most likely culprit....the plug wires. We tested each and every wire and found none showing to be bad. I replaced them anyway. So some time passed. Until last Sunday. And again...same story. Rerun. Ok, so it's sitting in my garage being defiant. Much like myself at this point. I've talked to my buddy and and his techs and they are baffled. In doing my research and reading the service manuals I know the computer in the car needs 10.5 volts to operate, but they usually won't act up until 9.5 to 10 volts. I've owned several Lincolns in the past. This much I know. LOL! Going back to the battery I made sure I've got that available. When cranking I'm only dropping to about 11.9 at the lowest when I've been cranking quite a few times. Battery is being kept at full charge during all this. I'm not making any progress guys. I'm willing to drop another $240.00 for another module IF I know it will last. There has to be something causing this to fail....and it seems to be happening more often. And besides that....it has rained every danged day since it quit starting. The bike looks like hell. That has to stop. I need some advice. Thoughts?....ideas?.....advice?.....magical cures?....donations to buy another car? Dancing in the rain...... Mike
  13. Hello everyone, I just finished my trailer wiring. I used a hopkins converter so I could use the brake/turn signal combo on my trailer. Everything seemed to be easy and the trailer lights work fine. Until I use my 4-way flasher, they do not work with the trailer connected. Disconnect the trailer and they work fine. Any Thoughts? The bike is a 2004 RSV.
  14. Has anyone had any problems with their TPS? I have the 07 RSTD which has been in the shop for waaaaaay to long. Anyhow as mentioned before in another thread they finally got the head gasket fixed and put it back together. But it is running like crap! Idles fine, rev's fine in neutral. Put it under load and open the throttle and it feels like hitting the Rev limiter. Does it more in higher gears where the load is greater due to gear ratio's. We have checked everything we can think of and everything others have mentioned here but to no avail. We have pretty much ruled out the carbs and timing. They checked the TPS and apparently the resistance was all wrong like no resistance. They are suppose to have one ordered and hopefully be in this week.. Has anyone else had a problem or can shed some light?
  15. Okay here is the story; Bike has been in the shop for several weeks 38 days to be exact, getting Ma Yamaha to finally fix the over heating issue which as we thought here back in January/Febuary that it was a bad head gasket. Okay they finally get it all back together and the service manager calls me to tell me it is not running good. Says running great on side stand, 1st and 2nd gear runs out fine but 3rd and up it acts as if it is starving for fuel. They are checking the vacuum lines, I told them to check the filter for clogs, and to check for contaminated fuel as it is the 10% ethanol that has been sitting in the tank. I researched here and that seems to be the normal advice, (I had a similar issue on my 03 VTX which was a fuel pump bike also and Turned out it was a clogged fuel filter. Would run fine the for no apparent reason it would shut down. It only did this if the bike was low on fuel. I first changed it over to a gravity feed system but that did not help, changed out the filter and that fixed it. I had put a new filter on and apparently it did not flow as well as the oem.) So can anyone here think of any other reasons that this may be occurring? I had recently sync'd the carbs, and was in the process of fine tuning the pilot's as I had put new pipes on the bike and it was running lean. but I don't think any of that would cause it to shut down like it is doing. Thanks
  16. first time out scared the heck out of me! Not what I was expecting.Took a few mile to figure out how to handle it.It is a handfull when I'm riding alone, but settles out real nice riding 2up.I think it still needs some fine tuning. The wife likes it and thats what counts.I think it will work out just fine for 2up riding and its easy to remove for two wheeling.
  17. One lazy Sunday morning the wife and I were quiet and thoughtful, sitting around the breakfast table when I said to her unexpectedly, "When I die, I want you to sell all my stuff, immediately." "Now why would you want me to do something like that?" she asked. "I figure a woman as fine as yourself would eventually remarry and I don't want some other a$$hole using my stuff." She looked at me intently and said: "What makes you think I'd marry another a$$hole?"
  18. Hello all, I has a slight coolant leak under the cylinder "fins" that developed over the winter while in storage on my '03 RSV. From talking to people and reading posts by the fine folks here, I ordered in new plugs and changed all 4. Taking out the old ones, I lost some coolant as expected. The new plugs fit fine and I have no leaks now. The question I have is the new plugs have a female thread in the center of them for a bolt or screw. The old ones were just rubber with no threads. Is there supposed to be a bolt or screw that goes in the threaded portion of these new plugs? Thanks.
  19. An Albertan motorcyclist was caught driving at 263 km/h on Highway 16 between Edson and Hinton, Alta., about 280 km west of Edmonton. When the case went to court, amazingly, the judge allowed the motorcyclist to keep his licence if he paid a $12,000 fine. "The speed was unusual to begin with," said RCMP Sgt. Ron Lyons, pointing out the maximum fine for speeding in the province is $25,000. "But I haven't seen fines that high, ever." Source: CBC News ....and for today's educational tidbit... http://www.differencebetween.net/language/difference-between-licence-and-license/
  20. If 8 fl oz for a M/C is recommended for the 1st time, then would 32 fl oz for a 20 gal tank be recommended for a truck or is that too much for a 1st time. The truck runs fine its just that it is a 1993 and thought a clean up probably be good for it.
  21. Ok last Friday I dumped the bike, I am fine just pissed my scoot isn't in mint condition anymore; although the scraps do add a bit of character. Anyway, I digress, is it normal for a raw gas smell and hard start after a tip over? I assume the answers to both are yes due to the balck magic of carbs. I ask this because as soon as I could get the bike back up and on the center stand I fired her up to confirm there was no case damage. Initial start was fine but about 20 minutes later after a shutdown of a few minutes it took quite a while to start (suppose it was flooded). I did find out the tilt sensor works great though. Anything else I should check before putting her back on the road? Thanks
  22. OK...it all started sometime on Friday afternoon. I got home from seeing some customers to find that my Internet was down. My son said that it had been down since around noon. Now I've had this DSL for a couple of years and it has been very stable, I don't think it has EVER been down and if so, for just a few minutes. So, I called Frontier to report the problem. Was almost through all the voice menus and crap when suddenly, it started working again. So I hung up and figured it was a glitch that they had already found. About 20 minutes later, it was off again. I waited for about an hour and called again. This time I finally got through to a tech and he did some checking on my line and etc. He then said that when he entered by account number, he got a pop-up telling him that Frontier was doing service upgrades to the system in my area and that is why it was down. I said OK...well...it would have been nice to receive some advanced notice but anyway, what is the ETA on having it up again. He said..."well...according to my screen...it should be back up by mid April". Now at this point, I was fairly sure that this guy had swam too long in the shallow end of the gene pool so I specifically asked him..."are you telling me that I'm not going to have any Internet service until April and that nobody would feel that it was necessary to let me know this". He said..."yes sir, that is correct". At that point, I nicely asked to speak to his supervisor. A few more minutes of waiting and his supervisor was on the line. She was a very nice lady and asked me what the problem was. I told her what had been said so far and she laughed and said..."I don't blame you for asking to speak to somebody else". She said that yes, there were service upgrades taking place and over the next couple of months there may be brief periods of slowness or very short down times but I would NOT be without Internet for any significant amounts of time. She did more tests and determined that there was indeed a problem with my line somewhere. She submitted a ticket and promised me that somebody would be out yesterday. Now according to my son, the service came back on later Friday evening and it was working fine when I got up on Saturday morning. Around 8:30 a.m. though, a Frontier service tech showed up. I told him that it was working fine right now but he said he would check it anyway. He told me that my service would be off for a few minutes while he checked the lines. He did some tests and told me that there was a problem somewhere with my line and he was going to put a toner on my line and go down the road to find the problem. He showed back up around 2:00 yesterday and said that he had determined that the line was bad down the road and was submitting a ticket to get the cable crew out here. I asked how long that would take and he had no idea but hopefully within a few days. WHAT? I said you know, my service was working fine when you showed up but hasn't worked since then and is still down. So...he said that he would see what he could do, maybe find another pair of wires to use. About an hour later he showed up again and said that all was working fine now. Maybe, but I still had no service. Just a blinking light on the modem showing it trying to connect. He said that didn't make sense because I had full signal at the box on my house. He checked inside the house at the jack where my modem was plugged in and it showed full signal also. He said he was going to make some calls and try to find out what it could be and he left again. He never showed up again and I never heard back from anybody but about an hour after he left, it started working again. So......I have no idea what was wrong. I don't know if there really was a bad cable. I don't know why it was working even when it was showing full signal. I don't know much of anything except that some of these people don't seem to know much about the jobs they are supposed to be doing.
  23. I am having a problem with my Zumo 550. My GPS works fine by itself but when I plug in my GXM 30 antenna it shuts of the unit within 3 sec. I have a friend near by who has a Zumo 550 also and when I place his in the cradle it works fine, music, traffic, and weather. I have updated the software on my GPS and been on the phone with Garmin. Now they are on "Vacation" and I was just wondering if anyone else has had the same problem. It acts the same way on the car cradle and the motorcycle cradle. Any suggestion???

  25. Hello. I've just bought 98RSTD from a private party. The bike sat in his garage idle since 97. I had the carbs worked/plugs/fluids and it runs fine except it'll shut off without warning even down the freeway at 65mph. The lights don't go out. After you stop it'll start back up just fine, but it'll do it again. Anyone had anything like this?. Thanks, P.S I'm new to VR.
