  1. '87 with 60K miles. not all the time but 2 times in the past three weeks, I will start off my first run of the day and about 3 miles into it, the Oil indicator comes on. It lasts about 15 seconds. Just long enough to get scared then it goes out. After that.. nothing. I can rev the engine, let it idle down upshift, downshift and the engine is happy. The oil was changed about 1000 miles ago so it's not like i have molasses in the pan. Has anyone seen this? Can I pull the oil sensor and clean it? Any thoughts? That's a false reading I can live without.
  2. ... my god. has anyone tackled this one. I don't even wanna go there without about 30 digital pictures along the way. hell, i could've just been a neurosurgeon or something. seriously, i would appreciate any tips or advise. the only other engine guard i've replace was on a silverado 1100 and i did it in the driveway without even letting the wife know i had a crash. this thing is INTEGRATED with hoses, wires, moldings, etc, etc, etc... unbelievable. I guess that'll teach me to lay it down huh!!!!
  3. When I was a lad I had a neighbor who had a first gen Venture, I loved that bike and told myself that someday I would have one. 24 years later I found and bought my Venture from a BMW dealer who had it stored in his garage in pristine (honestly like new) condition with an original 8500 miles on it, it was his personal bike before he got into BMW's and I cannot stress just how nice it is, but was it ever dusty! I drove it the 60 miles home and it purred like a kitten, shifted beautifully, wandered a bit on the highway (25lbs air in both front and back tires, who thinks to check that? oops) Anyway! I decided to take all the plastic off the bike, clean, polish, touch-up, change the battery, oil, filters, plugs, wires etc etc... I spent an entire week, dawn to dusk on that bike, and when I was done, whoa! It looked like it just came off the showroom floor and I was very pleased, right up until I rode it. Before I describe the problem, I wish to point out that I am not a mechanic, on a knowledge scale of 1 to 10 (ten being a pro mechanic) I am about a 3, when it comes to electrical, I am more like an 8 or 9. The problem: Ok, choke the engine and start, it fires before 2 revs, warm up engine and turn off choke. Hop on and and begin to ride, acceleration is very smooth, here is where the "issue" starts. Ok, as you accelerate to say 55mph, you go thru the gears and you reach that 55mph, at the very moment that you reach your speed you let off ever so slightly on the throttle and you feel the inertia of the bike meet the declining engine RPM, in other words you are no longer accelerating and you are not slowing either, it is at that very moment that the engine begins to bog or act as if it is starving for air or gas or spark or???? It continues to go down the road, only once has it backfired, one pop while moving out to pass a car. When I accelerate from the 55mph, there is a 1/2 second delay in throttle response, and for just a moment it seems to "chug" up to speed then accelerate smoothly and normally. Saturday night on the way home from work I tried an experiment, I had driven about 10 miles so engine was fully warm, I would accelerate and experience the above, so I cut in about 1/4" of the choke lever and it accelerated very smooth! It did not "cure" the problem, but made it 75% better.. With the exception of new plugs (I believe I gapped them properly) and wires, battery, oil and filters, I didn't even touch the engine or carbs, but maybe I dislodged a hose, or??? I don't know, I don't "see" anything out of the norm but this is making me crazy! PLEASE, if you have a suggestion or have experienced similar, I can sure use your advice. Thank you muchly! Chirp

Is the chirp a warranty item? From what I have read here It seems that it can sometimes be solved, but not always. Is it a transmission or engine noise?
  5. I have a '99 RSV with 38000 mile on it. It has some engine or trans rattle when the bike is idling in nuetral. Kind of a low rattling noise that seems to be getting a little louder this season. I don't here it rolling down the road, the seems to be running perfect otherwise. I would appreciate any thoughts on what I might be hearing and if I should be concerned. Thanks for your help, Buford
  6. I think I know the answer to this, but if a man wanted to buy the absolutely quietest touring motorcycle, what would he buy? I have a 2005 RSTD, but it is not exactly quiet. I changed it some with BUB exhausts, but that was to try to drown out the engine whine, valve clatter, etc. It was never what I would call a quiet running motorcycle (although it's been a great one!) What's the answer? Absolute quietest - exhaust, engine noise, etc. - motorcycle right off the showroom floor?
  7. What is a good way to check engine cyl compression? I realize it sounds dumb but there has to be more than one way
  8. OK folks, I got an email from one of our members Michael F. Kerr. Michael lives in San Diego and is having a problem with is '83. Here is the message. His user name here is Michael F. Kerr so you can PM him at that name. My faithful "Black Beauty" is showing her age. She's an '83 gen 1. I've been plagued by an oil leak I finally traced to a leaking cam cover gasket. This was surprising, as the engine was just re-built a while back, and the cam cover seals were new. Long story short: As you know, each of the eight cam shaft hold down caps has a cast in, threaded, boss where the cover bolt threads in. On one cap, this boss is broken off, don't know why, although the aluminum isn't the best looking I've ever seen. A poor casting combined with age, I suspect. Another is stripped. I suspect it "popped" just as I let up on the torque wrench, and I missed it. Or maybe it was marginal, and heat expansion did the deed. So my question is: are you or any of the other riders aware of a Gen 1 engine being retired and "pieced out"? I looked at the online parts manual, and they, the caps, don't seem to appear as a seperate part...probably because the cam bore would have been line bored at the factory with the caps in place when the engine was built. So maybe someone knows of some laying around? If I can find a few I can get them sized here, and I've found very good steel inserts to re-thread all the existing 6mm holes.
  9. Hi All, Anybody want to take a guess what caught my attention on this Ebay auction ?? http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Motorcycles___YAMAHA-Venture-XVZ12-1983-loaded-GREAT-GAS-MILEAGE_W0QQitemZ120287223793QQddnZMotorcyclesQQddiZ2283QQcmdZViewItem?hash=item120287223793 Answers on a postcard to the usual address. I wonder what his engine number is .......
  10. Hi everyone new to site ....I just bought a 08 RSTD and had a question about radiator covers ...has anyone installed them before and does it effect the cooling of the engine ...any help will be great thanks Kelly
  11. I prefer leaving the side engine panels off my '85 in cold weather. But in order to "clean up" the engine area, I'd like to remove the black support tube/bar that attaches to the frame and runs accross the bottom of the jugs front to back. Question is, does that bar do any more than support the plastic panels? I really can't see where it could play a more vital roll than that. Any input would be appreciated!
  12. here is a cool looking ride with the 1.8 l Honda engine. http://gizmodo.com/5026218/icare-motorcycle-actually-doesnt-give-a--about-anything Brian
  13. Hey Folks: Your thoughts if you please...Here in Ole Virginia it has been about 90 +/- 2 or 3 degrees...So I have noticed that the engine case really gets HOT during summer riding...Yesterday we did a ride of about 200 miles and of course the heat from the engine is something I have become accustom to....Today however I made a short 20 mile trip to a local motorcycle shop...spent about 1/2 hour there and rode back.....parked the bike....about 1 to 1 1/2 hours later I decided to go our and cover the bike...I always check the engine case by hand to see if to HOT to put on a cover..(condensation thing)...anyway...Motor was still very warm...I could put my hand on the side, but could not leave there for long....Still pretty warm after almost two hours.... THOUGHT: If oil is gets this hot during short run....What about a LONG summer ride ?..It CAN NOT be good for the engine?....Like most on this site I have never heard the fan kick on...DOES is give anyone else "pause" that these motors get this HOT...Just a thought....I see a lot of mile by a lot of folks...with NO mention of engine temp problems...Again just a thought.... George In Virginia....
  14. Lately I've noticed something peculiar and was wondering if others out there experience the same or am I just experiencing something coincidental. With this scoot and my '85, I've generally brought the oil level up to somewhere between half and the top mark on the sight glass. Due to other readings on this sight related to oil level and oil leakage/seeping, etc... I've been allowing the oil to go below the middle point...almost as low as the bottom mark. Cool... I don't get any oil leakage anywhere any more but I've also noticed that the whole engine seems to run a LOT quieter, smoother, and seems quicker. Anyone else notice this?

  16. Riddle me this batman: is it the battery or an electrical short somewhere? Well kids, life's been good...haven't ridden the bike in a couple days until yesterday, noon. hopped on Trigger, turned on the ignition, head lights turned on, neutral lit up green, hit the start button, the engine rolled over for a few seconds, but no start. So I hit the start button again, but this time, the engine barely turned and the lights went out. Oh #$%^! Must have blow a fuse. well needless to say the fuses are all good, but the ignition is dead. So I walked away from her for an hour or so, came back and now the lights once again work so i hit the start button only to hear...tick tick tick tick followed by the familiar power death. It sounded like what i believe to be the solenoid ticking? Checking the battery, my meter stated that it had 12.8 volts with 3.8 amps...for what it's worth. Next i pulled the battery and let it charge for a hour and gave it another try...same results. Followed by the "well let's try jump starting it" which worked! ... but, i noticed that the green neutral light (as well as the headlight) was flickering. I didn't like that so i shut her down. and finally, I got little Bro to cough up the battery out of his bike and Mikey Moused it into mine...hit the button and VROOM VROOM! it's alive, it's alive it tell you! Trigger was purring along like nothing ever happened. Lights were stable and bright and the engine was idling nicely. So off to Wal-mart i go and can you believe it. Of the 6 or so batteries on the shelf, one was exactly what i needed...though it set me back $78 bucks, i was still rather happy. Unfortunately though, the new battery required an initial charge, so I'll have to do my [hopefully] final test in the morning [soon]. Now with that said, here are my observations: 1. if it was the battery, which i truly hope to be the case, it never showed any signs or symptoms of the impending doom. Lighting didn't change with engine speed, the starter didn't appear to drag or lug while starting, etc. Just BOOM, dead in the water. Another note, which i find rather hard to believe, is that the battery is a Yuasa brand. Which leads me to believe that it may be the original battery. That would be an 11 year old battery with 19K of miles on it...is that possible? [i'm the second owner] Anyway, i was just curious if anyone else has had this issue before. KARMA: the glass being half full here...i was suppose to leave for a big ride today. And yes i'm disappointed not to go, but i would have been REALLY disappointed, had Trigger died on me out there...
  17. O.K. last Saturday morning when cold starting my 1986 VR, I left the Choke on too long and the engine stopped. Initially, the engine "fired right off" with the Choke on; however, after about 10 seconds with the Choke still on, the engine died and I have not been able to get it started since. It had been sitting for about three months with about two gallons of gas in it until three weeks ago when I rode it around the block several times. The battery has remained fully charged; however, it will not "fire off" after Saturday's episode with the Choke. The plugs and wires only have about 500 miles on them; however, they were installed about 2 years now. Tonight, I poured about 4 ounces of Seafoam in the gas tank hoping it might remove any varnishing, mositure, and/or trash deposits. I can smell gas after trying to crank it for about 15 seconds with the choke on. Question: I have read that to much Choke on a start up could cause the plugs to permanently foul out. Have you ever experienced this scenerio? Also, let me your thoughts and ideas what might be wrong. Thanks, Allen
  18. I was just reading the summer issue of Yamahas 'Horizons' newsletter.. Page 8 has an article and pics on the new 2009 V MAX. Its motor is an all new 1679cc V 4. Chip controlled intake system. a new fuel injection system and fly-by-wire throttle system. Also a new aluminum frame and swingarm. Now what are the chances that this MAY be the basis for a new RSV. Does that then mean the dreaded gear whine could be goneand at least a 15% increase in horsepower to match BMW? For my wish list...... A real speedo and tach with volt meter, oil and coolant pressure gauges.Even a gear indicator. The electric adjustable windshield from the FJR.....Am I getting ahead of myself here? A taller trunk so a full face can really fit. Better back light...s. How about a full fairing for better weather protection. Paneling over the engine so not to hear any noise except the exhaust. Not forgetting the 5yr unlimited mileage warranty. With the additional Roadside Assistance that us up North don't get but would like.. Its nice to dream......... 1154
  19. I'm such an idiot! This spring I started hearing a really horrible noise that sounded like metal scraping metal then changed to sounding like a knock. I thought I spun a bearing. So I pull the engine so I caould put in the engine out of the other VR I picked up for parts after I got hit last Halloween. While I had the engine out of the other bike I decided to take it to the car wash and clean it up before I instal it. On my way home I looked in my rear view mirror and saw that one of my straps had come undone. Before I could come to a complete stop it fell off the trailer. Luckily I was only going 5 mph or so. But it was enough to destroy both valve covers, the stator cover, a couple camshaft caps, and the bottom of the crankcase where the oil filter mounts. :bawling:Got the crankcase welded up and replace all the broken stuff with parts from the old engine. Finally got a friend to come over and help me get the engine in. She started right up and run great. For about half a tank anyway. Then I start hearing that noise again. Like I had spun a bearing. Either I have the worst luck and the new engine is crap too, or there is something else causing the noise. Just to rule out one possibility, I yanked off the eahaust collector, cut it open, gutted it out, stitched it back up and threw it back on. Low and behold the noise went away! I wonder where it went. Long story short... I'm such an idiot. With guys like me around, the rest of you look that much smarter!
  20. I just ran a can through the tank and have been told by some that I need to change the oil to remove the debris that it has accumulated ?? I just changed it 1200 miles ago and synth. oli is expensive? Any ideas if this is needed or can harm my engine if I don't change it? In most of all the post I have read nobody mentions changing the oil after Seafoam.
  21. Does anyone have a 2nd gen stator lying around that they could measure the maximum outside diameter for me? I know a couple of you here have replaced the stator in this engine. Still have your old spare handy?
  22. Hello everyone. I wanted to see if anyone was having the same issue as I am having. I recently changed my 07 Venture over to Mobil 1 with a Mobil 1 filter. Upon start-up, I hear an inordinate amount of "clatter" from the top-end of the engine. I don't think this occured to this extent while running the petro Yamaha oil. I'm running 3.5 qurts of 10w-40 Mobil 1. Is this normal or should I switch back to the conventional oil? I'm not looking for a this oil that oil argument, just looking to as "why" my engine is making so much noise for the 30-45 seconds after start-up. THe bike has 2500 miles on it. Thanks everyone for your time.
  23. I was looking at some highway pegs and was going to order but wasnt sure what diameter the engine guard on my 85 vr is. It looks like 1 inch tube but would like to be sure before I order. Any experts got this off the top of their heads? Thanks in advance, Brian:think:
  24. So now that everything is back together, well almost, I have a nagging problem. Had the motor out for second gear, cleaned the carbs but did not break them down, just took out the diaphrams, used carb cleaner all over and through out, installed new diaphrams and all seemed to be good. Balanced the carbs last week and now I can't get the idle below 1500. All carbs are balanced but I have a problem with #1. When I take the plug off of the vaccum port there is very little change in the engine. Not so with the others. When I took off #3 the engine almost died, #4 and #2 there is some change as would be expected but not enough to worry if the engine will die. I replaced the lower throttle cables but they are all slack, the idle speed screw is backed right out, I checked the chokes and they are all pushed in. Sometimes though, the idle will come right down and momentarily behave as it should, but mostly not and I cannot controll it. I need more ideas,,,,,,,
  25. If I was going to paint the engine in my 84... what kind of paint would be the best to use? I'm not to sure about painting the whole thing. Maybe just do some highlights to match the color of the bike.
