  1. The Bruces are heading for Yellowstone this fall via Denver from the UK. I wondered if any of you venturers out there have any tips on route options and things to see going and coming back from Yellowstone and the Tetons. We intend to take two days going (possibly north up to the Bighorns?) and 4 days coming back (via flaming gorge, Dinosaur etc). Also are there things to see around Denver?, we may have a couple of days free at the end of the holiday. We are both geologists so after Grand Canyon, Yellowstone is a must. We’ve got accommodation in the parks but otherwise we will probably book as we go or just before. Thanks for any suggestions.
  2. The sight glass on my front brake master cylinder sprung a leak from cracking, so I replaced it with an ebay m/c. When I took off the old master cylinder, the it had just two wires coming out of it and they were tucked in the fairing - not hooked up. Brake light did not work with front brake, now I know why. However, the replacement m/c has two sets of wires coming out of it. The two with the bullet type ends that connect somewhere, but there is another set of wires coming out that have a plastic connector on the end that looks like it should plug into something - anyone know where this goes? Thanks, Don
  3. Does the plug that goes into the side of the CD player in the saddlebag just pull out? I want to unplug and remove the player. I've pulled on the plug and it's not coming out. I don't want to break anything by really yanking on it. TIA
  4. Next Friday 10/29/10 RandyR is coming down to help me do a Valve shim check and change job and carb sync on my 87 1st gen. A couple of members that knew this was coming up expressed an interest in coming over to watch the process for these two common maintenance functions on these motors. To do these functions and other things I have planned, the bike will pretty much have it's skin stripped off and will be down to a running chassis stage. This stage of access will be conducive to talking about, explaining and showing other common problems and fixes for the 1st gen MK2 XVZ1300 platform. Well next Friday is the day. Randy will arrive at my house around 10:00 AM-ish and we will spend the day turning wrenches and talking mechanical stuff. We picked this Friday because it was the first date where I could get off work and coordinate with Randy's schedule. Even though it is a week day, All that are able, interested and willing to show up are welcome to come. I have set up a nice work area under cover in the backyard and there will be a cooler with beverages iced down near-by. If you think you can come PM me and I will give you address and directions. If there is any interest I'll make arrangements to have some meat on the grill to feed you as well.
  5. I think I blew out my final drive on my 99rsv.We were out for the weekend, riding around the fingerlakes when after about 150 miles and several hour we made a pit stop. While rolling through the parking lot at slow speed I heard a god awful grinding, clanking, clicking noise coming from the final drive.Luckly since we were riding around the lakes we were only 25 mile from home.So we ended our weekend trip and headed straight home. got home ok,can't hear the noise at highway speed, but if sounds like it's coming apart when i roll the bike back and forth.Put it up on the jack, spun the rear wheel and it sounds really bad. Draned the oil, it was dark gray and smelled burnt. It was just changed out a couple weeks ago,I used mobil 1 gear oil. something has let go inside. But she still got us home.Anyway I'm looking for a new to me final drive, anyone do a trike kit that wants to sell there's.I contacted someone here on the classifieds but no answer yet.Probably out riding
  6. 1999 RSV, 65K miles. Oil is leaking from the left side of the motors, appears to possibly be in from of the peg. Honestly I cannot see where it is coming from. leak is bad enough that you can see it streak down the exhaust pipe on the left side. Is there any "usual" failing gasket up there that this most likely is? Left side, bad; http://www.webtrendsguy.com/images/rsv/oilbad.jpg Right side is clear. http://www.webtrendsguy.com/images/rsv/oilgood.jpg
  7. The CB comes on and channels can be changed, the numbers fade out in about two seconds. there is no sound coming through the speakers. Anyone know what else can be checked
  8. Does anyone here on the Darkside live in PA? If so, how do you get your bikes inspected with the CT on? None of the locals dealers/shops (9 in total) will inspect it with a CT on. I live in south central PA, and would be willing to travel quite a distance to get someone who will inspect it. I'm just not willing to commit to coming over to the Darkside until I can find a shop that will pass it come inpsection time. Thanks, Don from Harrisburg, PA
  9. Anyone have a suggestion of where to find either aluminum or mag 8" trailer wheels? I would think they'd be available all over the place, but not coming up with anything on the web.... I'd like to replace the steel wheels on the trailer with something that looks better...
  10. Just wondering how you are coming along on the Guitar??? http://www.flixxy.com/little-north-korean-girl-playing-guitar.htm
  11. Their is a cover, mid-cylinder, with a phillips screw (seemingly) holding it. I have a flow of oil coming from bottom right side of it. What is this cover? Any thoughts on the leak?
  12. well getting ready to head out to the park on thursday. not going to be a big meet but it will be a good one. got some great rides planned and some great people coming. can't wait to see everyone. if you are planning on attending, sign in on the calender. see you there. bill
  13. For the last 3 years we had a Tuesday night, ride night,,,, this year we ride on Wednesday nights. Leave our place, 26 Madeleine Road, Brant, (new address) at 6:30 pm, if that works. If earlier or later would be better, let me know. We ride for the joy of riding and BS. Normally we ride for 'coffee' or ice cream, until it's just about dark. We have no real destination and don't really know what direction that is in, until we leave,,,, kind of all depends on who's coming along. You don't have to post that you're coming, Marca and I will ride anyways,,,but if you are later than 6:30 you might find us gone. If we know you want to join up,,,we can wait. Starts this Wednesday May 5 2010.
  14. I talked to a rep at the Yamaha tent in sturgis, They had all their new yammies sitting out on display. I walked around a bit then went up and talked to a guy. He asked if i was interested in anything. I told him i was interested in the new 2011 venture. Because they didnt have one out on display. Not even a 2010. I said that I was a member on here and everybody wants to know what is coming. He basically told me "I feel your pain". He said Yamaha has a bike that sells the way it is, and that he doesnt know what they have coming down the pipe. and that he doesnt know whats coming. So I took that as another year of the same thing. He asked if i was interested in anything else. I said that if nothing changes soon I'll be interested in another brand......
  15. the pics are not so good, but i hope you get the general idea. ok, so i go to the shop to prep my scooter to make texas maint day coming saturday. I pull off the cover and find a chip coming off the tank and a big stain on the paint. I check for leaking brake fluid, it's clean and dry - so ruled that out. I checked my cover and nothing there. I rub my finger over it and it smears a bit and smells like gas what the heck????? I think to myself. then it dawns on me - i knew from the purchase that the bike was a salvage title. the seller, of course, makes it sound like a fall over, then totaled by INS company. the leak has to be coming from the inside. oh, good grief charlie brown. what next. I drain the tank into a gas can, then i start by pulling away the chip to find body filler. the body filler is, of course, soft and easy to cut off. I find the hole that was ground, repaired, ground and then filled, smoothed and painted. now i have this mess to contend with because who ever did the repair, did not do it for longevity sake. that is my opinion cause it is now my mess. I don't do body work much less gas tank repair. I assume a repair is gonna b much cheaper than a replacement tank. Does anyone here do gas tank repair. Maybe I can get lucky and someone within driving distance ( 8 hours or so) does and wants to take my job after giving me a quote - so what do ya'll think
  16. I've read most of the treads on brakes, about all of them hanging up but mine only work about half of what they should. I check out the calpers an not all of the pistons are coming out. The lever is good its mainly the front I have to pull hard to work. Fluid ,pads are ok .Is it my lines or in the calipers
  17. does,nt look like i'm getting a whole lot of response on the meramec state park meet. it's only a month away. if any one is coming for sure, or thinking about it let me know and rsvp on the calender. if we don't get enough for a meet. i will have to cancel it. i don't want to go through the prep mapping rides, etc., if no one is coming. i took 2 weeks vacation and will make other plans. it will be a great meet but we need folks to attend.
  18. My tach is gone crazy runs like it's missing, removed TCI cleaned connections moving to top of air box. If I swap plug wire and connections to the left side coils will this let me know if the #2 coil is bad. Any one coming to Asheville have a good 83 TCI I could use to test. How do you get the cover off the TCI to get to the diodes to look for bad ones.
  19. stereo speakers even when the sound system is off. I know this can't be good, the plug wires have the plastic sheathing on them and I don't see any spark jumping in the dark, but where else could it be coming from?
  20. Tooling along I-64 in Southern Indiana near exit 39 and my Venture quit moving forward. Engine still runs, but bike will not move forward. Bought a trailer at tractor supply and found a pickup to tow it the rest of the way to Waynesburg, KY. Im not moved in yet and I have not had a chance to check out the problem, but when the bike is in gear, there is a terrible noise either coming from the middle gear section or the final drive itself. It's so loud that I cannot tell where it's coming from yet. This was done on the side of the interstate waiting on help. Well anywho, I'm in Kentucky now in a motel waiting for some lectricity at the house. Once I get moved and settled in, I'll tear into the bike. 99 Venture with 99,600 miles on it.
  21. I found a small puddle of oil under my bike. It was dripping from the rear shock but I dont know where its coming from. Help!!!!!
  22. Just in case anyone is looking for some, I just put a set of Star Bag Liners for 99-2010 RSV (and I presume 05-09 RSTD) in the classifieds. I have only used them a few times and there are no rips, tears, marks, etc - zippers work flawlessly. I am selling these because I have recently picked up a set of Beer30 liners (thanks Gene!) and no longer need these. $50 - to your door via USPS in the Lower 48. I will consider shipping to Alaska, Hawaii or Canada however I will need to look into the additional cost to do so. I will also deliver to anyone in the Vancouver area (or any one coming to the Kruisin the Kootenays), however, you'll need to let me know you want them by this coming Wednesday 30/June/2010. I'll certainly consider other offers so if you have any questions or think my asking price is too steep, just let me know. 24. My wife had a triathlon today. I was out riding the bike course while the swim was going on and came across a 30 foot wide across both lanes except for a foot of what I thought was water. 99 out of 100 times I just would have ridden across, but something made me stop and get off and make sure it was water. Appears someone was angry about the race and dumped oil across both lanes of traffic. It completely covered the asphalt. The bikes were going to be coming in about 10 minutes with motorcycle escorts. Even worse it was on a curve. I'll spare you all the details of what happened but was able to keep any bikers or bicyles from going down though. Have to tell you, it had me shook. I consider myself to be a very safety conscious biker, wear full gear and always thinking safety, but this came out of nowhere. How do you prepare for this. Makes me wonder about being on the farm roads and coming across a truck failure that dumped a bunch of oil on the road. I have a hard time believing that I would have had a chance to keep the bike upright going across that oil. Don't think I could have done it even if it was straight. I get taking certain risk, but this was one I had not planned on that has me a little shook. Was curious if anybody has taken their bike across a serious oil stretch and what happened.
  25. Were getting close to the 2011 models coming out, has anyone head anything yet?
