  1. My friend and fellow member, Noddy, is really cranky now. He just got his bike out (91vr) and was giving it an inspection. His brandy new Avon front tire is checked again! Cracked all the way around by the rim. Same thing happened to him last year with a brand new Avon. I am wondering if this brand is suitable on the VR front. It's almost like the cold storage has this negative effect. The rear is fine, but it is a larger tire. Mine is fine (rsv) again, a larger tire. So far the avon is a great tire, but you may remember I had this same problem with an Avon on my first gen a couple years back. Anyone think the extreme cold could affect the tire while in storage. His is an unheated shop with wood flooring.
  2. I'm going to be taking my whole fork assembly off and putting on a rebuilt setup, and replacing all the brake lines, calipers, and master cylinders aswell. I could use an extra pair of hands or two gettring things done and making sure I don't accidently drop Goldie on the cold hard concrete floor in the process. The garage is heated, there is half a case of Mexican beer in the garage, and I wil buy pizza and wings for nourishment. I'm thinking next Saturday to get started. If anybody is bored or would like to help, come on over...
  3. Just purchased an 03 RSV with 13300 miles. Takes forever to start when cold runs great when warmed up. It take me 5 to 10 minutes to get it going with the temp in garage around 45.Any tricks or suggestions?
  4. It's cold out but no wind. See temp below. The sun is shining. Kinda hard to say if it's lionish or lambish but other than the cold I'm leaning towards the Lamb. Of course it is Sunday and we ALL should be leaning on THE Lamb (of God)...
  5. groaaaaaan.....this is bad, but during a month that has felt nothing but cold, this will make you laugh! A curious fellow died one day and found himself waiting in the long line of judgment. As he stood there he noticed that some souls were allowed to march right through the pearly gates into Heaven. Others though, were led over to Satan who threw them into the burning pit. But every so often, instead of hurling a poor soul into the fire, Satan would toss a soul off to one side into a small pile. After watching Satan do this several times, the fellow's curiosity got the best of him. He strolled over and asked Satan what he was doing . "Excuse me, Prince of Darkness," he said: "I'm waiting in line for judgment, but I couldn't help wondering, why are you tossing those people aside instead of flinging them into the Fires of Hell with the others?" "Oh, those." Satan groaned: "They're all from Ontario ………… :rotfl::rotfl:
  6. Is anybody in the upper half of the US going to be able to do any riding this weekend? I'm starting to go bonkers. The hubby and I don't mind putting on snowpants and going for a spin in about 35 degree weather but it's to cold to even do that. I know it's early but it's still in the 20's here, cold, snowed again last Monday and sounds like it's going to stay that way for a while yet. I'm tired of pulling into the garage every night and seeing that chrome just staring at me. This has been one verrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrry long winter. I'll quit my whining now...thanks for letting me vent.
  7. OK, took first ride today with the new jacket. 48 deg. when left, 51deg on return home. 2 hour ride. Jacket, with T-shirt, and one fairly heavy cotton shirt on under the jacket. Verdict is-- Stayed perfectly comfortable, not cold, not hot. I will estimate that if I replaced the cotton shirt, with a Wool shirt, the Jacket will be good down to about 40 deg. F. Below that, I would need the electric vest. So, I'm very happy with this jacket. Fit is a little tight, but thats what I like, I hate loose fitting clothing. The Armor installed in Elbows, shoulders, and back, Seems bulky when putting the jacket on, however once under way ( a little navy talk there ) I don't even notice it. Arm movement seems good. My chest measurement is 44 inches, I got the Medium size.(( 44 )) ( this per suggestion on the " NewEnough " website, where I ordered it from ) They stated that these jackets run a little on the large side. I would have to say this is the most comfortable I have been at 50 deg. with just one jacket on, over an average wgt cotton shirt. Also, the new Hot Grips, with 40 gram thinsulate gloves worked just fine at 50 deg. I tried them last week, same gloves at 33 deg. F. and I would say my hands were getting cold. However I'm not in habit of rideing in that cold temps, so won't worry about it. If your in a motorcycle supper store, and they have them, try one on.
  8. I know we do alot of bragging down here in the sunny south about our twelve month riding season. But, the truth of the matter is that since November our weather in Atlanta has pretty much sucked, at least for riding. If it wasn't raining (which we despertly needed) it's been pretty cold. Not as cold as some of you but cold enough to keep the bike parked. I'm at a loss to understand how some you in the colder climates tolerate the winters but down here, we don't do well with the cold and Cabin Fever can be a real concern. Expressing my concerns about my mental health due to cabin fever to Blackjack, he suggested a ride on Friday which was projected as a decent riding day. Mostly sunny with a high temp of 65. Friday also happened to be the opening day of the Great American Motorcycle Show being held here in Atlanta, this weekend. So we agreed on a time and place to meet and took a short but pleasant ride to attend the opening of the show. One of his neighbors/Goldwing buddies, Ken, who has also attended several N. Ga. M&E's, also made it in time to be there with us when the doors opened. We spent the afternoon walking the show which overall was the same as last year's and all the years before. But, we still had a good time and I took a few pictures to share.
  9. I haven't had time to do much riding in the last year. I decided to go for a ride today I installed the new dry cell battery turned the key hit the button and she came to life. I rode into town and gave her a bath then off for a couple of hours of ecstasy. It was kinda rough being cold and my butt out of practice, the only difference between a corbin seat and a piece of plywood is the corbin won't give you splinters. The temps were only in the upper 60s but I managed to survive. I thought about you northerners but not for long.
  10. OK IT IS COLD! 20 degrees below zero It is cold as hell and I'am not going to take it any more. STOP ! STOP ! I can't take it any more. SEND HEAT!!!!! EVEN IF IT ONLY GETS TO ZERO I WOULD BE HAPPY! Bubber In the frozen tundra of Minnesota
  11. I am sure youve all heard me complaing about the cold around here the last few days. Well here is a story of a guy riding his scoot across Canada to raise money for Juvenile Diabetes. For those of you that may not know the overnight low the night before he arrived it was -40c which also happens to be -40F WITHOUT any windchill factored in. This guy is dedicated to his cause, I hope he raises a ton of donations for Juvenile Diabetes. Crossing Canada in January is gonna be one cold and long trip!!!!! http://www.leaderpost.com/Health/motorcycle+tour+raise+awareness+about+diabetes/1180062/story.html Brian
  12. Get rid of the SNOW AND COLD and bring on the summer!!! ........ .... .... ....
  13. i have a 08 v-star 650 has 5000 miles on it when you give it the gas it wants to bogg down is ther anything i could check?it is also very cold nature any help thanks:bang head:
  14. Met Jerry, whose 2007 is ALMOST as pretty as my 2009. Nice to meet a fellow SoCal Venturer. Thought it was a HD from 1/4 mile back, then got next to him, gave a courtesy wave and SHOCK!! We puled into a Starbucks and enjoyed a cold one. Haven't seen another Venture on the road down here. Hope he sees this thread and responds... Kevin
  15. Hi guys! Well the cold weather hit and I went a few too many days without starting my firstgen VR and bought a Black & Decker trickle charger at a local store. Its a sweet little unit that comes with three interchangeable connectors, 1 that you can bolt onto the terminals and leave it on there for quick plugin, a 2nd with alligator clips and a 3rd thats a cigarette lighter plug. I was preparing to pull the false tank cover and bolt on the first when I remembered...Hey, my venture has a cigarette lighter, so I took the easy way and plugged the trickle charger in that way. An hour later and Vroom! Vroom! it started right up. Great news right? Well, yes except for one little thing. I noticed my headlight and the lights on my instrument cluster gauges were not on. Im pretty sure I popped a fuse but before I tear in there I was hoping to find a diagram for the fusebox on the first gens. I would like to know if I can safely replace the blown fuses with fuses that are a little larger...and I mean a LITTLE larger. Im not going to throw 20 amp fuses in there and defeat the whole purpose of having fuses in the first place. Im also not in a huge hurry because having the headlight NOT light up saves a ton of battery and makes these cold winter starts...but I will need to fix it before I take the bike back out in the spring. Another crazy idea I had that Im inviting comments on.... I know you legally MUST have a working headlight on a motorcycle, but has anyone considered putting a switch in...maybe out of the way...opposite the hazards switch, expressly for cold starts? I just keep thinking what an advantage it would be to have one when your bike battery is giving its all and its not quite enough....wouldnt it be great to shut off the headlight and have that extra power for starting? Feedback is welcome!
  16. eaten? Had a fancy, shmancey cocktail party we had to go to last week, and they served ostrich on a tiny peice of bread with a sauteed mushroom and some sauce on it. That was a first for me. Anyway...it got me to thinking about all the strange food I've had to try in my life. Rocky Mountain Oysters: (Tasted great till I found out what they were and promplty threw up) Alligator: (Wasn't bad, but once was enough) Rattlesnake: (Gave me the heeby jeebies)(Did I mention I'm scared to death of snakes?) Buffalo: (Pretty good, but I started pawing the ground and snorting afterwards) Venison: (The only way to eat it is if it's cooked hot and fast) Calamari: (Tastes like a rubber tire) Crayfish:(Had to eat it in Louisiana at a crayfish boil where you have to pull off the head and suck the brains out. A lot of ice cold Corona helped. Sorry, but you canjuns have a wierd sense of humor!) Pickled Pigs Feet: (When I was a little girl, my dad and I used to sit at the kitchen table with a jar of it and a quart of buttermilk. I think we did it just to make my mom sick watching us eat it. Good memories.) Sushi: (Apparently you have to aquire a taste for it. Not my cup of tea.) Anyway, that's all I can think of now. So, what's the weirdes thing you've ever been brave enough to eat?
  17. Love this Texas weather - 76 degrees Sunday, 35 yesterday, 27 today! One of the PIA items we need to do when it stays below freezing for a couple of days around here is keep the leaves out of the pool skimmers so the water keeps flowing and prevents freeze damage to the pumps and filters. This can be especially problematic when we have such a cold snap so early in the season before all the leaves are off the trees. As you probably know, sticking your hands repeatedly in water that cold can really be painful. I normally use a pair of neoprene fishing gloves for that job, but I recently bought a new pair of gloves that I thought I would try. Two of the things I just don't think a man can have too much of are glues and gloves, so when I saw a dirt cheap price on a set of waterproof work gloves at Harbor Freight last summer, and found they were actually beg enough for my hands, well, I just had to buy them. These are Western Safety, item number 96612. They are completely waterproof, Thinsulate insulation, and have reinforced non-slip working surfaces on palm and fingers. I think I paid about $6 for them! I can't vouch yet for how rugged they are, but I can absolutely confirm that they are 100% waterproof and WARM. I really expected them to just be water resistant with a bit of leakage around the seams, but not so. I have had them completely submerged within about 1/4" of the cuff numerous times, and even after the water freezes on the outside of them while I continue to work they remain completely dry and warm inside. I have an extremely hard time finding any gloves big enough for my hands - most extra large gloves don't even come close. But these in extra large are just perfect. I don't think they would make very good riding gloves in nasty weather because the cuffs are not long enough to go over your jacket sleeves. But they are sure nice to have when you have to do anything else outside in cold wet weather. Goose
  18. I met AKRefugee (Keven) Saturday and we had a good ride with some Friends of mine. What started as a ride for 3 bikes ended up with 6 bikes and 10 people. The weather was great not too cold just brisk. It looks like I may have a new riding partner during the weekdays. Thanks Rod
  19. Anyone care to guess what my door handles for quonset are from???? Cold beer when we meet to whoever guess's right....
  20. Got a question for you cold weather riders who have been doing this for a while. What gloves do ya wear to keep your hands warm. I've rode home from work the last couple of mornings, temps around 30 to 32 degrees F, and with my snowmobile suit on my body stays comfortable, but my hands get extremely cold. I wear waterproof snowmobile gloves but it doesn't help. I'm not even going to try adding a handwarmer on the grips, beings what adding fuel is the extent of my mechanical abilities. Any help on warm gloves would be appreciated. Thanks, Glenn
  21. Started out cold and never got any better. Swifty stopped by about 10 and was not sure about the weather. It was 5c (40f ), and with the wind in places it was cold. About a half hour later we stopped for gas and he wanted to know if it was too cold or if we were wanted to Venture further. Rhonda said if he goes home we were still going for a ride, so of course he continued on. (I am sure he did not want to be out-done by Rhonda). As we riding along he follows a car into a small Private subdivision, and the houses were amazingly large and there was a lot of them. On the way back out just before we get to the road the gate closes, locking us in. We all look at each other and wonder how to open it . No buttons and no way to open it. Figured there was a sensor or something, but nothing. Couldn't ride around the gate, because of the rock gardens, that Rhonda wanted us to ride through. Anyway I walk around to the entrance and start dialing buttons on the intercom, untill someone answered and let us out. We were gone for about 5 hours and stopped for a warm lunch. Then made a quick stop in a parking lot, so Swifty could play. [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wxSisnpvqhs]YouTube - Boys will be boys[/ame] All in all it was a good day, nice ride and may be the last this year. Brad
  22. I see in some parts of the country winter is setting in, and you can see it reflected in some of the posts here, so, ................ "LET THE DRIVEL BEGIN"!!!!!!!!!!!!
  23. Do you have a riding season? I will probably have the scoots winterized by Dec 1. Sometimes it's Nov 1. Not so much the cold as those fall rains bringing the creek up. April usually brings enough warmth to get things moving again. The Weather channel is calling for a unusually cold and snowy winter for the east. You guys in New York get any snow last night? Our forecast is calling for snow showers next week. It could be a long winter nothing to do but bash on those second gen's.
  24. Don't know if I posted this here or not. A couple of years ago, I had been out riding with the group I ride with and had stopped for supper. This was in the fall of the year here in SE Texas and was cool but not cold. We were in the resturant about 1 1/2 hr. When we came out, temp had cooled into the low 50's or high 40's. Started bike pulled out on asphalt. Was about a 1/2 mile to ramp for freeway, I-10 east. Went under I-10 was making turn to get on feeder road to ramp, when this van went around me on the right side intending to get in front of me. Didn't want to be behind said van, so grabbed a BIG handful of throttle. Now this is where this gets exciting!! A 1st. gen Venture in 1st gear really likes to accelerate, which in itself in not a bad thing. But, and I say again, but with cold tires and cold asphalt it turns into a BAD THING quickly!!!! The rear end decided to lead at this moment, and the direction it wanted to go was in the general direction of this 3/4 ton van which was beside me at this time!! I got it straightened up and didn't go down thank GOD, but I thought I might have to change underewar when I got home. The point of this, is don't grab a lot of throttle with cold tires on cold asphalt. Don H.
